I'm not a pro but I think it's important to set up the ball on the tee correctly then you need to stand properly and last and most importantly getting a good grip
I don't know about that. Any good golfer who trains people is going to work with the grip when it is wrong. You might have been to people that aren't that good. I've played golf all my life. It's easy to see things like that
Sir, thank you so much for this video. I've been trying to help people play this wonderful game of ours for years. The number one problem I see 100% of the time is the grip. In my honest opinion, I believe THIS is the most important video on TH-cam about golf. PERIOD.
Your #3 was suggested to me by my SwingTweaks pro and I now hit the fairway almost every time! That is the only swing change I made! YMMV, but it changed my drives massively!
This video is gold. I’d add grip pressure into the mix too. I used to grip too tight and that made my contact extremely inconsistent because my hands were moving the club around throughout the swing. As soon as I gripped the club softer my contact consistency went up a lot. I’d say I went from a 7/10 grip pressure to 3/10.
Paddy Harrington taught me to use the palm of my right hand to press down on the left thumb. It locks my grip in without having to hold tightly. Frees my wrists up to unhinge and rehinge freely. It was the single best improvement I ever made to my game.
Thanks for the video. Couple of years ago had surgery on left shoulder and for some reason when I started back playing started that right hand issue. Weird rollovers with hand coming through swing. That segment of the video is going to help me out tons. I am now 55 but still a strong hitter. While losing some flexibility the right hand issue shows even more. Thanks as always. Always love your vedeos and podcasts. Hope you make 2 million subscribers soon. You and your content definitely deserve it.
Ive played golf since I was a young warthog and I have never heard anyone explain the right hand like this but it makes perfect sense.Great feedback! Cant wait to put this into practice tomorrow on the range.
This channel is the best at explaining these concepts that I have seen. A lot of other channels will say similar things but not WHY its bad or HOW to fix it. Great information!
The 2nd problem gripping, fix with fingertips and then pulling hand back to make short vs wrapping over … excellent description. Haven’t heard that, and hopefully it will fix a few of my errant shots.
I appreciate the knowledge all over YT about golf, but the common weekend golfer can’t remember all the steps..I swear there’s 50 different ways to do one thing and unless golf is your job, good luck
I throughly enjoyed this video. I play around with a pitching wedge in my yard with foam balls. This does feel weird in my lead left hand. But the results were astronomically better. I greatly appreciate it
I have no clue if this is going to work but can't wait to try. Not enough videos on guys talking about baseball grip and proper way to grip and how it impacts ball flights. I am the baseball grip all day and I struggle with a hook. Looking forward to this advice. Wow, a grip clinic doctor great idea for me i played baseball and golfed with my dad. My dad made me swing my club with just my left hand getting my rhythm. Thanks
Thanks Matt I’ve had a long right thumb grip for over 40 years, without knowing it. I’ve struggled between a draw and a snap hook. This short right thumb has solved that problem. Now I finally know what to do with my right hand. Thanks again
Tried the club position in the hands today. I was hitting the ball much better. And yes,it worked with the short game, chipping with the pitching wedge. Can't wait to try it again tomorrow.
started playing 3 months ago, obviously a rough start. Was shooting in the 120s. I watched this video, I went out and shot a 97. Broke 100 for the first time. Planted one 5 feet from the pin on a 140 yard par 3 and had many other good shots. It was all thanks to this simple grip change. I am still slicing with my driver sometimes but this grip helped that as well. I could not believe how consistent I was striking the ball. I know I shot a 97 but I 3 or 4 putt often
Great video. I’ve been struggling on and off with shanks the last 2 years in short random outbreaks lol. Recently I’ve had more luck fixing them by practicing these exact things with my grip rather than a bunch of swing thoughts. The overly strong right hand was definitely creeping into my swing which was also causing a slight closing of my shoulders at address. Didn’t notice til I was watching some recent video recordings of my swing. Few minor grip adjustments and I’m back to playing good golf
I coached ball for years! Studied baseball mechanics, hitting and pitching. Holding the bat in your palm is a weak grip,. Now your grip is correct and that is how I grip the club. I have seen like you've shown many with the bottom hand totally under the club.
Steve johnstone on his channel did exactly this a year ago and it saved me from finally giving up golf. For over 15 yrs I struggled with tge shanks and no pro could help me. So i stood further from the ball etc, which worked for a while. In desperation i found this grip advice as i was gripping with a very weak right hand. The difference is phenomenal. The club head comes through flush at impact, square divots not a shallow arch of a mark on the ground. This grip is fundamental to flushing the ball. I now love the game and have found hreat ball striking and consistency. Im nearly 65 and hit the ball sweeter than i ever have.
That's great to read. I'm getting back into the game after many years away (young kids and professional obligations), and I have been frustrated not to pick up where I left off with my golf game. I have asked myself if I should just give up rather than invest a bunch of money in lessons and new equipment to get back on top of my game. Hoping that going back to the fundamentals with videos like this will put me back on the right track without having to pay a pro to tell me the same thing.
Ok this is why I like this stuff. I'm a right hand golfer and I suffer from time to time to a soft, high, weak fade. Who knew the cause could be the right hand grip. I went to the range with this grip in the right hand finger tips...what a difference. It feels uncomfortable as hell. I know this is different because my right hand and inside lower forearm are sore from hitting for an hour on the range. IT WORKS. Great video.
Just subbed, this grip is absolutely the best grip for golf and nobody talks about the pull in of the right hand. Watched the video from french lick did you do a video of the old donald ross hill course, love that course, i played it a couple times a year before they put the new one in. Heard they put different grass on the hill c. Thanks lets catch rick.
Man, this is exactly what I needed! I was doing the 2nd thing. I had no idea why all my irons kept hooking! I will try the fix next time at the range!!
I was very skeptical about this and didn't know if I would be able to get the grip right. It worked!! THANK YOU! It didn't work so great for my driver, but man, my iron shots were amazing today!
I have been to the range a few times growing up, now starting to go much more frequently at 40 y/o and I can not begin to explain the problems I've encountered trying to be consistent and I know it all stems from my grip. I have been scouring TH-cam watching video after video looking for a video that best explains basic grip, and I think this may be it!! I’m going to watch this a few more times in hopes of memorizing everything before going to the range to implement it all and hopefully see some consistency with my shots! I'd love nothing more than to be able to enjoy myself hitting the ball instead of getting frustrated. I'd also like to get good enough to teach my son, and attempt to actually play a game of golf one day lol. But I’m taking it one day at a time for now and just worried about hitting the ball consistently!!
You've been working out I can tell. Me too. It helps. I think it's all in the wrists everything else is right, and when the wrists are on, they it's on big time. All the best.
I switched from being a left handed golfer to right handed and took the opportunity to start from scratch. I spent so much time on just my grip and it made a huge difference. I beat my left hand PB by over 10 strokes my first time out. The basics are so important. I didn't just practice till I got it right, I practiced it till I couldn't do it wrong. Great video.
I have to say the the advice with the right fingers and then PULLING the hand towards the body is an ingenious way to describe right hand placement. I’ve been in a grip rabbit hole for about 8 months but this feels like my missing link to perfection. I interlock but that tip finally allows me to overlap. My right pinky thanks you 😂

I also studied @claws_effect last winter and learned a “players” grip. Made huge progress all from grip mastery

Even if you don't catch "Rick" this grip post will "unselfishly" help many more than most of his posts. That said, you and he are different, and different is good. I suspect many players who turn the right hand way under the grip are doing so to try to fix a slice or push (as opposed to prior baseball training). Whatever the case, like a lot of compensatory moves, it generally doesn't work and just creates other issues. Good video.
You should also include counterbalance grip pressure, putting slight pressure with both hands in an inward direction to create more stable grip. Meaning left hand will push right and right and will push left, which creates counterbalance stability which is essential in golf.
Great video Matt (as usual). Btw, in one of your previous grip videos, you mentioned something about the thumb that gets covered up. Do I want it extended out or shortened?

Had my right hand too far over the top for sure. Took a few swings. In the correct position the arms and rotation feel much more natural!! Let’s go MSGGG
So do you interlock or overlap? I've actually been working on my grip for my left hand (rh golfer) but my right hand wasn't ideal. Thanks for this video I will try it at the range today. I also interlock

One of the best things I did for my swing was to put a grip trainer grip on my swing trainer. The best thing I did for my game was to subscribe to MrShortGame's TH-cam channel. Thank you, Matt Fisher!
I struggled with grip for many years until deciding to buy one of those short weighted swing training aid with a molded grip that force the hands into the ideal positions. Something else it does of force you to grip the club up on the air and that made me realize that grounding the club then gripping it had been the source my grip problems. Later I came across a Martin Hall video where he used a technique of gripping in the arm with elbows bent 90° he calls Elbows Down / Palms Up (EDPU) for how the hands start. Being someone who likes to understand why things work I realized the EDPU method of Hall starting with elbows down and palms up forces both arms into maxed out supination and external rotation. Then when you just rotate the forearms and hands 90° to a palms together praying position 🙏🏼 to put the club between them in a Vardon or Interlaced grip locking them together, the lowering of the club and straightening the arms causes both forearms to rotate inward which stretches and tightens the forearm muscles which control grip of the fingers. Gripping the practice grip and my club in the air made it easy to get my trail hands positioned properly. I had always read and heard your arms should feel relaxed at address but mine firm felt like twisted steel cables. I realized that the admonition to relax must actually mean don’t consciously contract the forearms to grip the club. Swing the club I discover the counter-torque the straightening of the arm created caused my trail arm to fold down and externally rotate ideally in the backswing and downswing and my lead arm to fold down the same way in the finish, something I had struggled with when gripping the club resting dead on the ground.
Surely he guy knows his swing isn't dialed in- I don't think it would surprise him to know that he does not have an ideal grip. but I do hope he was asked before he was included in the video.
Man, I've gotta tell you, I changed my grip and it completely changed my game. It's tough, it feels VERY weird at first, and it took a week of hitting ~40 balls/day, but I'm glad I did it. Completely worth it!
As someone who’s played and coached baseball/softball for years, I’ve never seen a baseball players right hand laid down like the description of grip issue #2. I’ve always coached and been coached line up the knuckles which turned to a golf grip is the perfect grip with the slight thumb and pinky adjustments. Was just curious about that. Most of the time I see the under right hand on people who are newer to the sport and have never been taught how to hold a club.
You also have to mention or fix someone who's grip changes whilst in motion. Some people have a tendency to loosen the grip too much causing either a slice grip or pull grip after take away/down swing
Hey guys . . . When I was looking to improve my golf game I came across a TH-cam video by Mr. Short Game . . . Matt was filming himself out of his back yard. I watched all his videos, and then flew from Concord, NC to Tarzana, CA and met him at Braermar CC. He used to give lessons there. My lesson was at 3 PM, and I got there at around 1 PM. I went to the Pro Shop, and asked for Matt, and they told me that he was coming. Then the guys asked: Are you a friend of his? I smiled and said: No, I am here to take a lesson from him, I am coming from Concord NC just to have a lesson with him! They smile and were astonished! "You came here just to have a lesson with Matt, and you came here all the way from NC just to do that?" I mean They could not believe I had done that! Matt and I became very good friends over the years, and I can say with confidence MY SECOND PLACE FINISH in one of my tournaments was exclusively because of his instructions, teachings, lessons, and friendship. Thank You Matt . . . Thanks to you, I was able to shoot a 72 At Rocky River GC in Concord NC!!!!!! Giving me a wonderful 2nd Place!
Most who talk about grip focus on the left hand … Thank you for clarifying the RIGHT hand grip. Point the “V” toward the right shoulder doesn’t work for me. You can have a weak or strong right hand and the “V” can still point, somewhat, toward the right shoulder. I agree, it’s not so much the right hand grip, but what the right hand does to the forearm AND the shoulder. Too weak, and the inside of right elbow points toward the target (should face out toward the ball); too strong and the shoulders close. From down the line, I like to see the left arm over the right (or the right arm down & slightly back), and the shoulders square or slightly right. Good stuff 👍🏻 Thanks

A lot of pros play with a strong grip..
Thanks for doing what you do!! How about some MSG surfing clips?
Best video you’ve ever made. Loved this!
Forget catching Rick Shiels, Id be thrilled to hit your subscriber count. Love the video and I have fault number one, Thanks for showing me how to fix it. Excited for golf again. Love the channel! If you ever wanna come to Tampa for a collab with me, let me know 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Great vid. Absolute gold knowledge here
bin watching for years love your vids brother
I love that- a Grip Doctor ! By the way my local range also advertises as in the top 10-must be a driving range advertising thingy
One of the best things I did for my swing was to put a grip trainer grip on my swing trainer. The best thing I did for my game was to subscribe to MrShortGame's TH-cam channel. Thank you, Matt Fisher!
You need to do a video where you find a random high handicap at the range and give a free lesson.
I'll be down there Saturday at 9am, randomly
Need that grip doctor making range calls #amirite
Great info thank you!
Terrific video-thank you
You did that guy dirty at 5:38 🤣
Yea…there’s a lot more going on there than just a bad grip.
😂😂😂
I know a couple guys that swing like that guy. You can't tell them anything. Lol
Haha that’s what I thought too
Surely he guy knows his swing isn't dialed in- I don't think it would surprise him to know that he does not have an ideal grip. but I do hope he was asked before he was included in the video.
Thanks for instructions
Great video mate, so true what you are saying 👍⛳️⛳️
Brilliant. Thanks ❤😊
Excellent advice.
How about using one of those grip trainers like Scottie uses? Are those good for grip problems?
Man, I've gotta tell you, I changed my grip and it completely changed my game. It's tough, it feels VERY weird at first, and it took a week of hitting ~40 balls/day, but I'm glad I did it. Completely worth it!
Great content as always!!! Huge fan. Keep up the AWESOME work
Jack and Tiger would disagree about your grip of overlap, the 2 GREATEST GOLFERS OF ALL TIME use the interlock! You can’t argue with GREATNESS!
Dang right patna. What we about to do about this foolio selling us Wolf tickets?
Great info
Everyone wants to catch Rick. He's the GOAT.
Subscribed !
Let's get Rick ✌️
As someone who’s played and coached baseball/softball for years, I’ve never seen a baseball players right hand laid down like the description of grip issue #2. I’ve always coached and been coached line up the knuckles which turned to a golf grip is the perfect grip with the slight thumb and pinky adjustments. Was just curious about that. Most of the time I see the under right hand on people who are newer to the sport and have never been taught how to hold a club.
As I get into my 25th year of golf... I've really been how amazed how golf is legit all opposites.. its so confusing haha. I love it
Best grip.video ever

Love seeing you in San Diego!
Great content! I will show this to my wife haha
You also have to mention or fix someone who's grip changes whilst in motion. Some people have a tendency to loosen the grip too much causing either a slice grip or pull grip after take away/down swing
I was just there this morning. 🤙🏽
Would be cool if you addressed left handed technique s. But great info never the less
Thank you
Are you living in SD now? Your videos have helped me play better. Hopefully I get to see you at the Stadium range next time.
There for a month per him speaking on his podcast.
He left California based on prices, and the political bs...
Mr ShortGame real deal
Hey guys . .
Most who talk about grip focus on the left hand
… Thank you for clarifying the RIGHT hand grip.
From my experience, where the V's point isn't so much the issue as long as they are pointing to the same place.
went out today and tried the grip. 100% better thank you mr SG😎
Is that Stadium golf in SD
Great video!
thoughts in interlock vs overlap? I switched to overlap a few years ago. I could never go back!
the 2 best golfers ever, Jack and tiger use the interlocking grip! If they do it, it must be the best way! You can’t argue with greatness!
Overlap , interlock , or 10 finger grip ?
Who's Rick Shiels? Only Mr. Short Game!
thanks
