Oh yeah and what is crazy is the mobile gaming GPU benchmarks are catching up fast with the console market. This is why PlayStation and Xbox are trying to grab as many exclusive games as they possibly can. Nvidia , AMD, Steam are all major contributors to the Vulken project, and Nvidia said their goal is to catch the console market in GPU speeds on mobile processor and they are almost there within almost a decade. Smart Phones came out in market in 2008 and look where we are now compared to the console gaming market thats been around for almost 4 decades
@@kalkydra You can already buy yourself a portable monitor for the Deck. They're not too expensive, and a 15.6 inch is plenty for two people playing close to the screen together
Something you didn't mention but I found helpful. In the rom manager there is an exceptions section. This is a feature precisely for fixing incorrectly titled/imaged games. If you have a rom that has been incorrectly scraped you can add an exception entry for the filename, then choose what the title should be, the name the scraper should be searching for, or even better an ID for steam grid db so it can be explicitly told what rom info to populate for your rom. For example say you have a rom named "timesplitters 1 - PS2.iso" but the rom manager thinks it's "Timesplitters Future Perfect". You can add an exception entry with the following settings: Extracted title (what the rom filename is): timesplitters 1 - PS2 New display title (what you want the title to be): Timesplitters New search title (what string the rom manager should use to search for info from steam grid db or what explicit id): ${gameid:35537} The id for specific games can be found on steamgriddb (35537 is Timesplitters on PS1) This way there is no need to rename rom files, no need to download custom images, and all the extra meta info from steamgrid is added.

I got my RG351V based on your videos and have been loving it. Looking forward to having some of the slightly more modern consoles in a portable format!
Nice guide - FYI there's a better way to handle the fact you don't want individual game links in Steam ROM Manager which stops you having to redo the whole list when you add something new. Within the left menu of SRM, at the top, is an item called 'Exclusions'. You can use this to correct titles, correct it finding the wrong SGDB entry, etc but you can also use it to exclude certain titles from being imported to Steam when running the parsers. Just fill in 'Extracted Title' and turn 'Exclude Title' on.

Thanks a ton for this guide! It was really helpful, though I did run into an issue where my external hard drive couldn't be read by the SteamDeck. To bypass that issue: 1. Reformat the microSD card to exFAT on your PC. Quick format works just fine here. This way, it could be read by both Windows and Linux operating systems. 2. Transfer all roms and bios from the PC to the microSD card. 3. Put the microSD card into the SteamDeck, go to Desktop Mode, and copy all the roms and bios to the Desktop. 4. Go into SteamOS and reformat the microSD card in the Setting section. This way, EmuDeck's setup process can find the microSD card path. 5. Follow the steps as they're listed in this video for basic setup (before the Steam ROM Manager part). 6. Transfer all the roms and bios from the Desktop to the correct locations on the microSD card. 7. Proceed with the Steam ROM Manager setup as you covered in this video to complete the whole process. 8. Games all work and run without issue.

After many hours of searching, the best way to transfer files between Windows and Steam Deck is to map Steam Deck's folders as network drives. I learned this from a vid on MonroeWorld YT channel. Mapping network drives doesn't require you to install anything on Windows or SteamDeck. All other guides want you to install apps like, Warpinator, FileZilla or Syncthing. Many users post mixed results with these apps.
Check your local classified’s. I purchased one for much less than Msrp and I am over the moon with it. It has 100% revived my love for gaming and is the type of device I’ve always dreamed of owning since the launch of the nvidia shield (which I never got to own or test out)
Huge thanks bro, just got my Deck in last night and this tutorial was exactly what I needed to get my emulators set up. I have subbed and look forward to future content.
Unless I missed something, if you want to tweak individual game settings it's far easier to have the game outside of Emulation Station. As a standalone 'non Steam game' you can save tweaks on a per-game basis (such as the adjustments to BotW) directly from the Steam menu overlay. If you make these adjustments after having launched in Emulation Station it applies those 'per game' settings to every single game launched in ES (I tweaked BotW in ES, Virtua Tennis 2 suddenly became locked to 40fps!)
This is absolutely the most comprehensive and best info on retro gaming. Although, I don't own a Steam Deck, i'm going to try my hand at installing and setting up Holoiso (Steam OS) on a mini PC then add EmuDeck with the help of your guide. I've tried Batocera, but I think with the Arch and Plasma DE and integrated Steam OS this might make it more enjoyable to have the ability to do all my gaming with Steam and EmuDeck while also having the ability to use Plasma DE for other non-gaming activities, where Batocera is mainly for retro gaming.
I'm endlessly amazed at what this community has been, and keeps doing for ease of access and setup of emulation on devices like SD. Thanks Russ for your great guides that help even a vet like me, and to any of the devs building things like this in your free time, collaborating to make these tools as seamless as possible, and constantly updating to account for changes and new ideas. It's amazing. I'm consistently humbled by the hard work and dedication I see in this community, and I make sure to support it when and where I can ✌️
I just want to say, I’ve been watching this channel (and this video) over and over again while I’ve been waiting to get my deck this week. My homework has paid off today, and I’m up and running, thanks so much for making these videos!
This couldn’t have come at a better time, I’m receiving mine tomorrow ! 😁 Thanks a lot for all the work you put in your videos, you’re doing a stellar job 👏
Fantastic job Russ... this is the best emulation guide for the Steam Deck, and its not even close... been following you for a while, and you always do great work... and thanks for that FPS/Refresh tip. A week ago, I had changed that, and then all of a sudden all my retroarch games started acting up... again thank you very much...
Something I would note in your written guide is the steam formatted sd card has a block size of 4K whereas the likely exfat formatted flashdrive from your rom source is going to have a block size of 32K. This means that trying to do a mass merge following emudeck's directory structure will result in an overwrite rather than a merge, so all the prior data you may have moved will be removed.
Invaluable. The Steam Deck is becoming an absolute unit. Honestly the emu deck experience used to be nigh unusable. These updates are massive improvements. I can't wait to see what the future has in store. With the GPU market still screwed up, the Steam Deck is the single best gaming device you can buy today for under 500$
3:56 an alternative to this if you don't have a USB c hub is to get a program called warpinator on your PC and on the steam deck. It will allow you to wirelessly transfer files from your PC to steamdeck and then you place said roma where you want them stored.
4:37 also if you have a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard you can pair it to the steam deck in the main ui. Press the steam button scroll down to settings, then Bluetooth, scroll down to bottom and it'll show devices ready to pair. Put your device into pairing mode and select it. If your device is not showing up at first try turning the Bluetooth on and off via the toggle at the top.
Glad to see some one else mention this. While I run Linux on my main machine I've got no SD card reader nor a USB C hub to use any of my external drives with the Deck so Warpinator has been rather handy at times.
Linux also supports SMB so you could just put your roms in a network share. I have a NAS so I logged into that on my deck and I can access all my stuff from there.
For those who know how to do it: I really liked the Network-drive-integration in Dolphin. Setting up SSH access / an FTP server allowed me to directly drag and drop files from my PC to the Steam Deck without any dongles. You may want to give that a try.
@@gerboog Hmm, I really hate AnyDesk. Always makes problems / weird limitations. Better than TeamViewer but still... Parsec is a thing for remote control.
This is an amazing update and a amazing video. I am ordering my steam deck soon and have book marked this video so i can watch it again and go to the written guide. Thank you
For moving files to and from the steam deck I'd highly recommend warpinator. If you don't have external storage large enough for your files this is a great solution. I used it to set up mine and it went smoothly.
It's the fastest transfer software that I've ever seen, well that doesn't use ethernet I mean lmao. It transferred tons of PS2 roms to my Steam Deck faster than my ISP even allows.
This is AMAZING! Made me buy steam deck. Protip : If you have windows or mac and want to transfer files. Just use Warpinator to transfer over wifi easily.
Absolute class, new subscriber! I can’t wait to get my Steam Deck. It was an impulse purchase, this video has smoothed over any buyers regret I might have had.
thank you very much for this guide, youve been my fav retro gaming channel. I know its often thankless work but i truly appreciate you and the time it took for this.
I've been into emulation for a decent amount of time, trying to find a good handheld. This definitely has the best user experience. The customization is perfect 😍
Thanks for this excellent guide! Unbelievably helpful. Here are a couple of additional small things I learned about EmuDeck the hard way: 1. I had an issue where retroarch overrides and config were not saving properly - cheats, controller remaps, and save states were not persistent. It turned out I had two installations of retroarch - one on the hard drive and one on the sd card. Removing the internal install and clarifying the paths in retroarch Settings>Directory fixed it. 2. By default EmuDeck selects Yabause as the retroarch core for Saturn, and I found that it would not play more than half the roms I threw at it. A helpful reddit post showed me that you can duplicate Steam Rom Manager profiles (COPY link at the bottom) and change the core association that way. I copied the Yabause profile, renamed it Beetle, and edited the Command Line Argument to replace "yabause_libretro" with "mednafen_saturn_libretro", and now I can play all of my Saturn roms.
Can I just say, I have revisited this video again to help me muddle through this process as I'm not the best at this sort of stuff and it's been a massive help. Wish I could give 10 thumbs up!
This video more than "earned" a like from me! As well as a sub too. This is not the first video I have wta he'd trying to figure out how to turn my Steam Deck into the Emulation God that it truly is. But in the other videos, I would always get so close but something that I could not quite explain would happen and my games wouldn't run. This video was so awesome that you actually would explain little things to look out for to make sure everything worked at the end. I really appreciate that. And besides this video being s t quality, the fact that it goes along with an S tier plus plus plus plus plus written guide is over the top and even more appreciated. I wish I would have seen this video first lol, and thanks again!
thanks for the awesome video. emulation station seemed like the way to go but i think the fact that SRMA puts all your roms into collections helps the clutter, and allows you to have per-game controller configs and performance settings.
There is now an updated guide! th-cam.com/video/Y5r2WZAImuY/w-d-xo.html

Ive just decided to go ahead and buy one so im VERY grateful to have found your page. I have a few months to get all the things i need to get prepped.
Thanks a lot for all the work you put in your videos, you’re doing a stellar job 👏
Thanks!
My pleasure, thanks for the support!
Thanks so much for taking the time to make this video.
Wow.. this is an amazing guide man, thank you for this! Keep up the great work!
Here have this crown 👑. This guide is so helpful 😁
Thanks for all the effort you put in to these videos! You've made my transition in to emulation much easier 😊
This is the greatest guide I have seen for loading Emu Deck from scratch! Amazing video, 100% subbed and liked. I needed to take the time to comment
Awesome, thank you!
Invaluable. The Steam Deck is becoming an absolute unit. Honestly the emu deck experience used to be nigh unusable. These updates are massive improvements. I can't wait to see what the future has in store. With the GPU market still screwed up, the Steam Deck is the single best gaming device you can buy today for under 500$
THANKS! Used your video and guide and got everything installed and running. Much appreciated!
Damn you guys rock lol
Glad to see some one else mention this. While I run Linux on my main machine I've got no SD card reader nor a USB C hub to use any of my external drives with the Deck so Warpinator has been rather handy at times.
Linux also supports SMB so you could just put your roms in a network share. I have a NAS so I logged into that on my deck and I can access all my stuff from there.
@@chronossage Do you have a Synology NAS, been looking at a few of them and they look pretty solid.
Thank you so much. I don't think I've ever watched a better guide. Your instructions are so clean and precise. I'll be sending you money, dude. 🙏
For those who know how to do it: I really liked the Network-drive-integration in Dolphin. Setting up SSH access / an FTP server allowed me to directly drag and drop files from my PC to the Steam Deck without any dongles. You may want to give that a try.
I'd use AnyDesk .. much better and I can remote control my PC and vice versa
@@gerboog Hmm, I really hate AnyDesk. Always makes problems / weird limitations. Better than TeamViewer but still... Parsec is a thing for remote control.
Can you explain with details please?
It’s really slow using SSH , copying roms to a card and then copying them over to the deck was way faster for me
@@valley_robot I mean, depends on your setup. I would assume pretty much all
This is an amazing update and a amazing video. I am ordering my steam deck soon and have book marked this video so i can watch it again and go to the written guide. Thank you
This is huge. Like man what absolute angels to make all of this so easy and accessible
Thanks for the guide. Still need to figure out a few things but I’m sure your online guide will give me the answers. You rock.
The way this guy finishes every sentence in the same way is like being waterboarded lol
I was confused at first but after actually trying it , this video made sense . Trust the process
I've emulated played games and then I've come back to this video like 4 times to UP MY GAME. Thank you so much!
Thanks for reminding me to be hydrated, I appreciate it!
thank you very much for this guide, youve been my fav retro gaming channel. I know its often thankless work but i truly appreciate you and the time it took for this.
Thanks alot man! It took me forever to figure out how to get my PS2 games to work and this helped alot. You definitely earned another subscriber!
Man I'm so hype for this can't wait to get my own Steam Deck and emulate away my favorite games like Medievil or Syphon Filter.
I've been into emulation for a decent amount of time, trying to find a good handheld. This definitely has the best user experience. The customization is perfect 😍
Thank you for talking about the different micro sd cards! That alone makes this video gold!
Thanks for this excellent guide! Unbelievably helpful. Here are a couple of additional small things I learned about EmuDeck the hard way:
I see in the written guide that Beetle is supposed to be the default core for Saturn, but for me that wasn’t the case. Weird!
Awesome guide man, super easy to understand
"I've created a written..." LIked and subscribed.
Just wanted to say your videos and resources are incredibly helpful. Thanks.
I think I need a steam deck now, this looks amazing, thanks Russ
Brilliant guide thanks a million. I got my Steamdeck on Monday and have used your guide to mod it and play my retro games 👍
Fucking how lol 😂 Bahaha
Can I just say, I have revisited this video again to help me muddle through this process as I'm not the best at this sort of stuff and it's been a massive help. Wish I could give 10 thumbs up!
Happy to be of help, thanks for watching!
Thank you so much I found this guide very helpful and easy to understand😃
I have had my steam deck about a year, but just now really getting the chance to dive in.
Amazing video bro! This made me want the steam deck even more
Thanks for the indepth tutorial. This was a breeze with your instructions. Finally I can play AvP and The Punisher on my couch. Much appreciated 🙏
just got my steam deck today this helped me a lot thanks!
Absolutely brilliant work, both the video and the write up!
My 512gb Steam Deck should be arriving next week. i really appreciate your guide.
Thanks for making such a fantastic guide, really helped get me started :)
This man wiped his entire deck to ensure everything went smooth for us. Mad respects to you!!! 💯💯
Thx for this guide. Finally I can play ALL my fave games at work 😎 The Steam Deck is by far the best Handheld ...
You’re the man! Steam deck should be delivered very soon! First time emulating so been researching. Hopefully I do it all right!
Happy to be of help!
Hands down best tutorial! Great work. Thank you👏
thanks for the awesome video. emulation station seemed like the way to go but i think the fact that SRMA puts all your roms into collections helps the clutter, and allows you to have per-game controller configs and performance settings.
