    Updated EmuDeck guide: th-cam.com/video/rs9jDHIDKkU/w-d-xo.html
    A few notes (thanks for the all the questions and feedback):
    - Apparently using the v1.0.0 version of Link's Awakening improves performance; I was using v1.0.1 in my testing
    - When closing the PowerTools plugin, press the B button to close it instead of the QAM ("three dots") button, which can cause the SD to crash
    - If you experience slowdown when playing RetroArch, it's likely because you downgraded the display refresh in the Steam settings -- set it back to 60Hz
    - I am currently not very interested in testing Xenia (X360) because most of those games are ported to PC or backwards compatible with current consoles. I may try a few exclusives down the line.
    - I also said "across the board" a lot in the video, forgive me.

      everyone i kno is very hesitant and skeptical about the steam deck because its valve's first console. even i was hesitant on getting it but man, i got mine 2 days ago and while playing it, i said to myself "i can't believe i'm actually playing triple A PC games on a portable device, this would have been a dream come true for the kid/teen version of me". i'm just so glad Valve's team created this thing.

      I can’t even play psx on 2x resolution. The performance drops significantly. Do you guys know why that could be? I tried completely reinstalling emudeck from scratch and tried different roms with same result: glitchy sound and bad performance at 2x (an even worse at higher multiples).

    Favorite thing about the Steam deck is that Valve is supporting the hell out of it. It may have bugs but they have consistently put out updates to fix it. Sometimes going a bit beyond what was required. It shows they give a damn and want their product to flourish which I can respect.

    Great video as usual. What I noticed is disabling SMT yields even better performance than simply dropping thread counts with powertools, so I usually just toggle that off with emulators and older PC games (older games tend to like higher clock speeds over multiple threads which they aren't optimized for anyway).

      @@MrBubs-yu4wm SMT is Simultaneous Multi Threading. intel calls it hyperthreading. basically, it has 4 physical cores, but 8 'logical' cores. so there are 4 parts doing the math, but they can each split it up as if 1 had 2 hands writing it out.

    Will say like most Steamdeck owners, this device has been amazing when it comes to emulation. Even Yuzu through cheats have really improved gaming on this (Crash Nitro Kart is running 60fps ONLY on PC/Steamdeck now). I original thought about having my RP2+ as my lower end 16bit and under emulation device but now everything emulation wise is on my Steamdeck.
    Dreamcast, PS2, and GameCube are fantastic on this device. Xbox, PS3, and 360 still needed some work but it's getting there and surprising at times (3D Dot Game Heroes runs like a dream).

      I struggled with the d-pad and general control layout for games up to the end of the 16 bit era. For Mega Drive, SNES, GBA etc my RG351MP is a far better device, perfect screen for it. For everything after that era (which most other current devices start to struggle with anyway) the Steam Deck is awesome.

      Tbf, I don't think much has changed from this video. The most notable changes have been:
      1. SMT is recommended to be disabled for Yuzu as well until SteamOS 3.5 releases. GPU should also be set to 1100.
      1a. Yuzu now has online multiplayer via LDN3.
      2. Super Mario Galaxy performance has been fixed now, thanks to the Dolphin team.
      3. Cemu now has a Flatpak available to download but only for the 2.0 version.
      4. GoldenEye and Perfect Dark has now been optimised for SteamDeck via 1964 GEPD. If these are the only two games you want to play, that's the best option.
      Other than that, performance has improved across all emulators across the board but only by a slight amount.

    I got rid of CEMU since all the games I want to play on it have been ported to Switch and run just as well in Yuzu.
    EDIT: Culling threads improving performance makes sense actually. By allowing the deck to completely idle those cores, it's able to push the active cores higher and harder since there is more power budget and thermal headroom available.

    • @MasatakaWin
      @MasatakaWin 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly that RE limiting threads. The CPU has a power budget, which it allocates to the various cores, however, there isn't enough power and heat budget to clock each core at the highest frequency, so for games that care more about the frequency that multithreading, you're better off limiting it. Would be interesting to see whether it improves Switch emulation, although Switch uses Arn architecture so that's probably part of the emulation overhead.

    It’s interesting to me that you had such good results with Yuzu, I played through the Splatoon games on my Deck in advance of 3 and while the first ran great, 2 ran pretty shakily even at 75% all the way through. I wonder if I need to update my Emudeck! Otherwise I’ve had small quibbles and speed bumps with the Deck as an emulator but it’s mostly a dream for me, basically everything I’d ever want out of a PC.

    • @Druiditup
      @Druiditup 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It can be hit or miss on some games. I’ve even ran into games showing not working on the yuzu compability list and ran just fine on steam deck. Also I learned that if you open a game using the GL instead of Vulcan and let the game render some shader / cache files and swap back to Vulcan some games run better. Also you can use the ryujinx (forget spelling) for games that won’t run on yuzu and I noticed the ones I tested ran fine, although it seems to use a lot more processing power on that emulator some game time is really lowered on battery life. Tons of options if willing to tinker around.

    • @BrightEmber
      @BrightEmber 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@KatalistProductionsKozzySasha Generally just turning it down to the right amount of threads will fix lag on many emulated games, it varies per game and per emulated console.
      For example Mario Odyssey runs practically the same as on Switch if not better at points, as long as it's kept at half threads. At full it's still playable, but considerably more laggy in many areas, no reason to play it that way.
      Mario Galaxy as well, for a less taxing example, runs better at around 3 threads, otherwise it has pretty consistently glitched audio and slowdown. At 3, it runs near perfect

    PS2 and Gamecube have always been the holy grail for me, and it's amazing to have a handheld that can run them upscaled on PCSX2. The controls of the Deck also make things like fighting games a joy to play, which is not something I could say about any other retro handheld I've owned. It's also great to have speakers that don't leave you reaching for headphones.
    Now, if only they'd release a model with a better quality screen I'd be in emulation heaven! That super low sRGB coverage can make games look pretty drab.

    Emulation gaming on the steam deck is amazing, but I've been running into one issue. Trying to emulate (ps1 and sega saturn so far) in emulation station while docked to a 4k tv (via anker dongle w/ hdmi) has been a horrible, low-frame experience. As soon as I pull the Deck off the dock, everything runs perfectly fine. I haven't found any settings that remedy this, and steam games have been running fine via the dongle.

    • @mitlanderson
      @mitlanderson 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Your emulator is probably being forced to run in 4k when your regular games are not. Emulation is pretty hard on the hardware, you might have to manually reset the resolution on the Deck to 1080p or 1440p in those scenarios.
