I THOUGHT the Refurbished Steam Deck would be a great entry-point for buyers that want to save a few bucks. But I'm not sure I'm happy with the one I got...

Bob: "I'm not gonna twist it"
Bob 5 minutes later: "So twisting it fixes it"
*twists his backlit monitor to fix it* I can't believe he did this.
When did he say that?
Ive changed backlight on an old synthesizer I had. Its probably like mine, glued on, so that is why twisting it fixes the problem. (the backlight probably presses against the screen, and the glue sticks on it).
I got mine on Monday and it looked like it was brand new and has worked perfectly. It would have been nice to see you go through the warranty process just to see if Valve took care of the issue for you. My only concern is that Valve could potentially be a little more stingy with warranty claims on the refurbished units
nah they not stingy they cool
"My only concern is that Valve could potentially be a little more stingy with warranty claims on the refurbished units"
They almost definitely don't care.
Source: worked in a warranty department
I already got a reply from them saying that they won't do anything because light leak is normal on lcd screens
I have a brand new steam deck with a screen with really egregious backlight bleed, and after asking valve if they would fix it they told me “it was within their tolerances and not valid for repair or warranty”
@@gavinh In that case, do a full return for refund and go back and purchase another one.
i got mine 3 days ago and it was immaculate. It was the latest revision and with an Huaying fan.
p.s. The buttons not working during the setup is normal if it comes with an old version of the installer.
p.p.s you DONT have to cut the shield on the ssd, you can open it on the other side to make it a little bit larger (i did it on my 64 GB model since the new ssd was a bith thicker).
Glad the condition of yours was good! It's always a experience may vary when it comes to refurb consoles. Also glad you added those notes i plan to get one in the future so i'll revisit this if i have issues with mine in the future lol
Yes to this, I did the swap last weekend for the same model the Corsair MP600, and I opened the shield to wrap it around properly.
A not an.
Mine just slid out when I was replacing my SSD haha
Huayin?
I got a brand new 64GB Steam Deck on the recent Steam Summer Sale and it also had this same kind of light bleed in the top left corner. After some looking around I came to the same conclusion as you, a little flex and screw loosening drastically reduces the severity of the light bleed. I thought of sending it back to Valve but I also heard that they have stopped accepting RMAs for light bleed except on very severe cases. They say light bleed like this is normal and unavoidable with this type of screen but if it's really bad to the point where it hurts the experience they'll fix it.
Not being a twat, but there were so many posts at launch with people in a dark room, with the deck on a black screen moaning about bleed. To be fair to valve - as you kinda said - they would replace if it was noticeable in gaming use, and it doesn't seem like that their policy has changed. I genuinely don't get this video's crits. Shrug.
Light bleed on screens:
Tons of handhelds (the bigger the screen the more prevalent) including the switch and tons of monitors have these 'hot spots' because of the way back lighting is done..
AND as bob eventually got to, pressure and twisting are a big issue; pinch your monitor slightly and it'll probably do the same and those don't need to be robust like a deck so it's less prevalent..
@@drawfullI think people just aren't used to game screens in the pitch dark...
Even high end non-oled monitors do this.. the switch does this.. people expect perfect BLACK from a screen that was never going to be capable of it and valve never claimed it to be.
People should be happy valve included such fine control for screen brightness because on many devices it's absolutely blinding to use.. ie phones or switch on an overnight flight..
You return one steam deck with light bleed just to get another one with the same problem (although may be of a different degree).
And it's not like they will keep sending you new ones after 2nd or 3rd time.
Same here, brand new summer sale, left top corner issue, by chance can you tell me what screws do I have to loosening, thanks.
I've been thinking about it and, although it's a bit expensive, I'm definitely going to get me a Steam Deck at some point. The emulation capabilities tied with the fact that I've been getting more and more into indie gaming over the past couple of years is pointing me into that direction. I know I could just play these game on my computer for no extra cost, but I actually am not a fan of playing games on my computer. I like to have separation of where I work and where I play.
exactly
At this point wait for the next one.
dont listen to the guy above. valve itself confirmed that they won't release steam deck 2 until there is a considerable jump in processing power
I think valve would be interested in the amd strix point apu if it actually comes out
The twisting is a feature not a defect! Something fun to do while you're playing a game!
Someone was playing the Twist it, Bop it game on that steam deck and then shipped it out.
Why get the Namco Negcon Playstation controller that twists when you can get the Steam Deck having it built in? More quantity built in right?
If you need something fun to do while playing a game, I think you need to find a more fun game.
As someone who use to calibrate video displays for years, I'm pretty forgiving about differences in display panel quality, but that light leak is nasty and that Steam Deck would go straight back to Valve. That's not refurbished, but what use to be called a "Scratch & Dent" model, as its sold with a known flaw.
glad you highlighted the backlight bleed issue. Ive messed with about 9-10 decks at this point (from my personal one and RMAs, to friends consoles, etc.) and every single one of them had very noticeable backlight bleed. people will defend Valve saying its common in IPS displays but ive never seen it so common and noticeable in any other device. Hopefully they improve their QA when it comes to screens for future decks/their next console.
The button issue you experienced during the initial update process: I had that happen when I upgraded my storage and reinstalled SteamOS. It was frustrating to say the least, so I think it's just a SteamOS issue.
It's because on first setup or factory reset the Steam client isn't actually running when you are doing this first couple of steps before sign in. Steam client has to be running for the inputs to be active so that's why.
The controller buttons not working at bootup is most likely due to the drivers for the controller not bieng loaded at boot. It is a computer after all. When you turn your pc on the first thing it does is load a boot manager and then it runs a startup list for inputs like a mouse and keyboard. Thats why the controls didn't work until after the system was fully booted.
Tbh I don't think Wuff is tech-savy enough to understand what you just said tbh.
I got mine 2 days ago. I immediately switched out the ssd to 2tb. I noticed that the foil covered screw under the shielding was pulled back, and one of the tiny screws was missing. Anyway, I loaded up the OS, and everything went smoothly. The whole process took maybe 15 minutes. Not bad for a refurbished 64gb steam deck!
2tb? So you doubled the price of it immediately? 2tb in the small form factor is way overpriced still
@@Artificial.Unintelligence it was $150.oo USD through Amazon. A Micron model.
@@Artificial.Unintelligence micron 2tb 2400, i paid $160 for it on amazon a week ago.

i got my refurb steam deck earlier this week as well. took 4 days(2 of which was a weekend) from time of purchase to have it delivered in Canada. only issue i had was the same initial setup weirdness. i just let it sit for like 10 mins and it sorted itself out and rest of setup was breeze. also mine didnt have the screen issue that he talks about. for the price difference id recommend everyone get a refurb one if they are in stock.
The screen thing isn't an "issue". It just can happen with IPS displays because of uneven pressue. Twisting it a little wont hurt the deck and it's fine to open it up and loosen up the screws then tighten them in the X pattern.
I have exactly the same issue in the same spot with my non refurbished deck, just normal steam deck stuff, pretty much unnoticeable unless the screen is pretty much completely black for me, 350 is a fantastic price for such a capable device
I've had multiple handhelds, and especially laptops, over the years that had that light bleed effect on the screen. I think it's caused by variance in the manufacturing tolerances of individual components. Using the twist method is probably ok as long as you're not really wrenching down on it. I think the plastic shell would start to crack and groan before the screen broke.
backlight is probably glued on. (had to change one, once, and that was glued) but yes its vvery frequent on all lcd's displays that uses backlight (so oled does not get this problem)
My favorite part is when the entire chat said yes. Lol❤😂

This is a backlight bleed issue, it's fairly common in displays in general. I had an issue with my Lenovo T580 screen and it's just from pressure being put unevenly on the panel. Nothing to be too concerned about assuming you are able to fix it by relieving pressure. If not then I suggest warranty/return
It was nice seeing an honest impression. Ive been thinking about getting the refurbished one. Glad to now know what can be expected
i got a 64gb deck with the lightbleed and the shell being cracky that I bought in november, so the unit on the video is kinda better than mine 😅
Refurbished stuff in general is always a bit of a dice roll. Some refurbs are nothing more than returns that just needed a little cleaning...and sometimes not even that. But others did need repairs, whether to physical damage or faulty board components. Sometimes this works out and it's good as new. Sometimes the damage led to things that can't be easily seen or won't show up at all until later (voltage spikes damaged other components but didn't kill them, screen was loosened but not enough that it was apparent before it was shipped again, etc.). There's a reason you pay less here--you're taking a risk, however small.
That's why there's warranty.
@@kuhpunkt Because folks that do refurbs aren't usually trying to hose the buyer. But if you're going to complain that you got unlucky and then instead of getting the warranty replacement just make a video about it, saying to avoid refurbs altogether...that's on you, honestly. You knew the risk, you knew what you had to do to mitigate it, you chose not to and to just complain instead.
Most available women these days are refurb units.
Mine had several users before me that were out her fufu.
Given that it's a known issue, and not all units have it, Valve needs to look into it and devise a fix, at the very least to apply it during the refurbishing process.
tbh thats just every display if u look hard enough
My IPS PC monitor has the same issue. Just a common issue with displays
My (not refurbished) 512GB Steam Deck came with that and it does bother me slightly, but not enough to make me wanna return it :P
EDIT: clarification?
They get their screens from 1 manufacturer/vendor. What valve needs to do is get their screens from like 3-4 manufacturers instead so you get a wide make.
@@matthewjbauer1990yeah because adding a wider variety of components to potentially go wrong in unique and unexpected ways is totally the way to go. they've designed the steam deck with a certain screen, so it'll be the one they are most comfortable shipping to consumers. this is an issue on all monitors using this display tech and is only exacerbated by the context the deck is used.
The case is likely refurbished too, as the newer cases I've been hearing don't come with the white strap to lift the deck out anymore as many people didn't know what it did without being told. Also, IIRC, you're supposed to put it in the case when RMA'ing a unit, so unless they received a damaged case it would probably be the one that came with that Deck originally. Most RMAs are going to be shortly after a person received a device, as that's when stuff is most likely to break from defects missed by QA, so that's why it looks new still.
I used to fix mobile devices and that looks like a pressure point under the screen. That's why applying pressure changes how it looks. It might be possible to loosen or adjust something in the housing to fix that issue.
I got mine today and everything is great. No backlight bleeding, all screws are new, no scratch at all.
Could it be a screen connector problem and not the tightness of the screws?
i had some light bleed on my brand new switch and i just did the screw trick and it actually helped thanks for the tip
I suspect that knowing how elusive these things are, that unless there is a key issue, they are banking on users keeping the unit for fear of losing out. Then there is also the hassle of returns that can put some off.
Having reinstalled my Deck relatively recently following a drive upgrade: the Steam OS installer is a bit of a glitchy mess. It took half an hour to carefully replace the drive, and then a day to reinstall. I suspect the glitches get fixed and created on the regular so you get a different experience each time you do it; and it'd be tempting to attribute that to the unit when it's just errors that are low prioritized because they're only experienced by a minority of users as compared to, say, library browsing problems.
I had those same start up issues with a brand new one... had to power it off and start it up many times before it actually worked
Saw you at the retro gaming expo over the weekend! Thanks for taking a pic!!
My refurbished deck arrived earlier this week and I went through the exact same setup problems. It took a couple restarts for the initial updates to install
how are you spoused to change the SSD if the OS is installed to the factory one??
I had mine brand new about a year ago. And it had crazy light bleed on the screen. Its just not really noticable until the screen is full black.
I say 'had' because it's now in RMA because the battery kept overheating.
The buttons not working is a normal Steam Deck nonsense. It happened to me on my New Steam Deck when I switched for a 1tb ssd. All went good after the update
Same
Same here. I'm not sure if it's an issue with certain Steam Decks needing a specific firmware update to "read" button inputs. My SteamDeck is a 2022 Q3 model and has the "good" fan. So again, not sure if it's maybe a hardware specific issue.
I got a brand new steam deck a few days ago with light bleed in that EXACT location on the screen so I imagine it's probably just the batch of screens they used at the time. A little bit of minor bleed is normal on LCD panels and it seems to be within tolerance here but yes, that's in the same place it is on my brand new one
lmao this is an unacceptable defect
Great Post, I found using tweezers on the thermal shielding works. Minor issue, but I wouldn't be best pleased. Send right back
I have the regular steam that I bought months ago and mine from the time I got it had the same screen light bleed effect on the top middle part and when I did the clear shell swap and swapped the screen to the new shell, the glare effect completely went away. So not sure if the screen was originally just not placed properly or what but that was my experience.
I’ve been really on the fence about getting a refurbished one or not! Thanks for the info 🙏🏼🙏🏼 they’re sold out but I’m sure they’ll come back soon
I got mine last year and the d-pad isn't working properly, I need to press it really hard for several seconds for each direction (include diagonals) to make the d-pad working as it should. It's pretty weird.
he ssd heatshield does not need to be cut. It's a flat piece of material wrapped around the ssd and held together with some soft glue. You can just carefully undo the glue, and re attach it a bit looser.
I've been wanting to get one but the battery life is kinda what keeps me on the fence. I also don't really go out all that much so I got a Logitech Gcloud on sale from amazon and ended up being really surprised how good the streaming is!. Maybe when the steam deck 2 realease I'll llok into it!
Depends on the games you play. Some light games with certain settings can get up to 9 hours of battery life. Some advanced emulated games like Zelda Wind Waker can fall under that category with some tinkering.
Very nice! I have had my steam deck for a year now and didn’t know about this ‘twisting’ feature till I watched this video!
My deck came with light issue brand new , but I notice its only there if I pick it up near top of the screen when getting it out the case , once I applied pressure again it went away ,but even when there you can only see it in dark room with screen showing black solid image ,really not an issue even when its there
The light bleed issue I thought would have been addressed by now, as it is well known problem on retail units, so not specific to the refurbished models. I'm guessing it must only effect a small number of units, or the fix isn't easy, as otherwise I'm sure Valve would have fixed it by now. But as you stated one person didn't notice it, while another did, and I'm sure that's typical. I personally would notice that, but my 17 year old son would be oblivious to it and wouldn't care. I'm looking forward to another retail unit sale around the holidays, so I plan to get my unit then, and I might go for a refurbished one.(if available). As the light bleed is the only negative that would probably make me return it, as I plan to put a skin over it, so some nicks and dings isn't a big deal.
It actually affects all of them, but it's different degrees. It's an ips, it's inherent in the tech
Is that 1/4 Hardibacker on your desk? Do you use it to protect your desk from heat?
I had the button issue when setting up my kid's SD for Xmas when I swapped the SSD. Also I ran into a SteamOS re-install issue where is would just throw up errors and listing a ton of "Failed" after initially saying "OK" to everything. Never happened with mine it took multiple hours to fix but I got it up and running and watching this video and seeing the light bleed I was like "uh his is brand new but lets see" and sure enough the top of the screen has it. I fixed it loosening slight the back screw by it.
I have an original release SD and for some reason the the screw that goes through case into the shielding isn't tight it screws with the fan and temps (found that out after swapping my SSD). His is the black shielding SD I figured it needed to be super tight too.....guess not lol.
The screen issue is probably whatever press method they do to attach the screen to case with that adhesive. That adhesive is creating pressure points on the screen just my opinion i could be nuts who knows.
Wild that the availability is still so limited.. it was the best device back then before all the latest handheld coming out.. I tried to purchase through using forwarder to my country (for warranty & ownership purpose) and got the nightmare of missing steam deck during delivery to wrong warehouse and neither valve/FedEx/forwarder care about it. 399 down the drain just like that 😢
Steam decks are still not being sold by valve here in Mexico sadly, so the only option we have is third party resellers that markup the price by 60% or more...
Considering my PC is 10 years old and I mostly play small indie games, a deck would legit be am upgrade for me, but sadly it doesn't seem I could get one any time soon
eBay?
I, too, bought a refurbished 64 GB one in the EU. From the outside it looked very good, the case was new, the charger was new, however - the “B”-Button wasn't working at all. Got an RMA Label from valve, so just after a day in my hands I had to return it. Not gonna mess with it since it has warranty. Now it's on its way to Prague. Let's see how it goes and how long it takes. Still, I'm wondering how something like this can slip through their “testing”? I mean, it wasn't a loose cable inside, it's clearly the daughter board.
they either dont do testing and just assume it works(returned under right of withdrawal), or you got very unlucky and it broke during shipping
Great video! - To me the lightbleed seems like a minor issue. But those that mind can at least send it back.
Light bleed is a common issue with LCD screens too. So that's another thing
This has definitely made me more cautious about buying a refurbished steam deck but it's still really hard to argue with saving 80 eur.
I bought one this week, and it has been amazing! New to pc gaming, so if an idiot like me can figure it out you’ll be cool
If it helps, you could still get that kind of backlight-bleed on a brand-new model. It's just less likely, as someone probably send this one back for that amount of bleed, but it's a bit of a lottery either way. Just check it when you get it, and take it from there within the return window.
I got mine yesterday and this guy is just making it out worse then it is. A refurbished deck is just a normal steam deck ahah but cheaper. I say you get it. Mine is a beaut. Looks brand new
Same thing can happen on a brand new, non refurbished, deck. It’s lottery. But they have a great RMA program so I guess there’s that.
I bought my 64gb deck new from steam and my screen looks exactly like that one. Its got some bright bleeding in the exact location at the top left and ive just kept it. Never thought anything of it and never sent it in for repair
I think the issue is shoddy construction because mine has the exact same light bleed but I bought mine new last year. Doesn't bother me much so haven't tried fixing it but the light bleed it definitely there.
i really wish they had a steam deck slim or something. I want it to be powerful but slightly smaller. I would love it if they got rid of the track pads. and placed the abxy and d pad under the thumbsticks and made the steam deck smaller in width i would probably buy it then.
Maybe try twisting it then while still twisted tighten one or more of the screw? Just an idea that came to mind - not sure if it'd actually work.
When I did a fresh install of SteamOS when installing a bigger SSD, none of the buttons worked until you hook up to wifi and let it do its update stuff and get to the point where you log into Steam. From there, all the buttons work like normal
I have the same bug where the buttons don't work as the refurbished deck when I reinstall SteamOS. Simply put the deck in standby and turn it on again to fix it.
My launch steam deck has had that light bleed issue, can I warranty it for that?
I think that has nothing to do with refurbished, I bought a new steam deck and have the same issue, but after making the screws a bit more loose it's much better now. Not a big deal.
Mine did this from the factory. I purchased one from valve as an early backer. When i received mine, it did the same thing (on the right side) out of the box. Was in no way refurbished (to my knowledge).
I bought my new 64 gig Steam Deck a couple weeks before the refurbished launched and had all of the same issues on setup. None of the buttons worked at all until the update. Also, I have a pretty severe backlight gradient in both the top left and bottom right but have never really thought much about it. I'm wondering how many of these issues are related to the refurbished product or just the Deck in general. Either way, this thing opened up gaming for me again for the first time in 5+ years and I could not be happier. Its basically the only way I game now.
Regarding the buttons not working initially. I have a theory that the rev B models doesnt have the correct drivers to function when Steam Deck OS is reinstalled on the SSD. I had the exact same issue with my Steam Deck with Type B joysticks when I swapped the 64GB eMMC to a 1TB SSD. First boot and the buttons and joystick did not work (this was a frightening experience after just installing an SSD). But after initial setup and an update later the buttons and joystick worked great and have ever since.
I replaced my screen and it was an experience. It's not difficult, just time consuming. Neither original screen, nor the replacement from iFixIt had any lighting issues around the screen, that's just weird.
A few days ago I changed my sdd on my steam deck and when I reinstalled the OS my buttons weren't working initially. I'm glad it's not just mine that did that. I thought I did something wrong.
I got mine yesterday. Fan is a little noisier than my old Steam Deck, but other than that, it's perfect. I guess that a lot depends on the reason the original owner returned it: some issues will be more serious than others. I'm very happy with mine. 😊
Was it worth it to buy another one ? I mean do you think the steam deck have more years ?
@@PastelKenshi For me, it was worthwhile. But I agree that it may not appeal to everyone.
If twisting it fixes it that says to me it’s an issue with how the screens are stuck into the body maybe heating the screen adhesive up and twisting it a bit then letting it sit would permanently fix it
Just so you know, the SSD shielding can be pulled apart wthiout needing to cut it and resized, when i put my rocket 1tb ssd in mine i ran into the same issue it would not slip back on, but if you look closely you will see it can be pulled appart from the seam and it is sticky enougf to reseal
I had the same issue with my buttons on a brand new steam deck after I upgraded my SSD. After the update they started working again.
Steam Deck screens are VERY sensitive to image retention. I thought I had burn in many times but it slowly faded away thankfully. It usually happens with game HUDs or pause menus.
Most likely just a you thing. Lots of people have done tests on image retention and found that it's quite resilient.
I never had anything like that but i had a small spot that was lit wrong and eventually it fixed itself
I haven't experienced this and have a deck from q1
That hasn't been a widespread issue...
I've experienced it too and it's most noticable after leaving a game running for awhile
Loved the video bob! Just caught up all my schooling and working and got back into your videos! (Also as a student that kinda jank steamdeck would make a great gaming option for a guy with no budget so fingers are crossed)
So that screen issue is a very common one for screens, even happens to a lot of reputable monitor brands. And as others have mentioned, it happens even on the switch. It's not something that can really be fixed with IPS screens. They could use an OLED, but this would have increased the price more than most people would have likely been willing to pay. Another part of it is that Valve is sourcing their screens from one company, and that is because that was the only company that had screens in the exact size and resolution Valve needed for the SD.
The button issue is like a SteamOS bug. For as good of a choice it was in using Linux, there are some downsides at times and that is likely one of them.
I'd like to see aluminum backplates for the deck like the ones people are making for the switch, at least to help with structural integrity. It would need a way to prevent getting too hot though...
It could also affect how well the wireless works depending on how it is setup which can be a pretty big downside.
Steam Deck has been getting better and better with the amount of quality packed into it
And just as buggy as I remember
@@animetodamaximumI have bought a SteamDeck last year and haven't had any noteworthy bugs so far.

My new 64GB Deck has backlight bleed in that exact corner, just not as strong. Tried loosening screws a bit but it didn't help.
I had the same button issue when i upgraded a deck with the same 1tb ssd so i think it's a issue with steam OS setup but the screen issue is not great, DeckHD are sending me a review unit for the 1200p screen so looking forward to upgrading that.
My Q1 steamdeck has the light issue at top. i never knew i could send it back, and now it is out of warranty.
Maybe a shell swap would fix it? Like maybe the shell isn’t perfectly straight and is cause some torque on the internal? Idk just a thought
I bought a 256GB Steam Deck at launch and it was great, pretty much perfect. My wife liked it so she wanted me to get her one. So I got her the higher end model. Her's had horrible back light bleed. I ended up just giving her mine after upgraded to a 1TB SSD and returned the one I got for her. Replaced it with an ROG Ally and kinda wish I had just gotten another Steam Deck because the Ally is incredibly frustrating to use.
You could returned your ally tho.
@@Jaxv3r There is nothing wrong with it from a hardware standpoint, I just don't think Windows is good as a hand held OS. But it is nice to be able to play Game Pass stuff. So, will just deal with the frustrating software until there is a version of SteamOS that will work on it.
@@Semi-DetachedI mean, ChimeraOS is sorta SteamOS but there are features that don’t work yet like TDP, Gyro, and Suspend/Resume, unfortunately and Speakers will need a firmware override too :(
@@DeterminedTorres Yep. If they can get some of the kinks worked out, I will give that one a shot. The suspend/resume part is sort of the most important part for it being a handheld for me. Once they have that worked out I will probably move over to it. I think there are still a number of issues getting stuff to work with the Ryzen 7000 based APU's at the moment on most Linux variants.
Thanks to all guys in this thread.
I now have the lowdown on the Rog Ally I wanted.
I will wait a while longer. 😊
Mine had horrible light bleed from day one and was brand new. 64gb model. My neighbor bought the 256gb and screen was immaculate. I don’t think it’s a price point thing, more as a luck of the draw. It bothered me so much that, after being denied a return, I sold it and haven’t got another. The screen on my gcloud is much better- but that’s the only better part, I wish the steam deck had the gcloud screen. Then it would have been amazing 😊
For some, the brand new out of the box SD was faulty too.
I love the steam deck and so does my SO.. and kids... They can deal with the Twisties :) love the review I was thinking of getting a refurbished for them so I can get my deck back.
I got my 512GB yesterday and I’m in love. You cannot beat this price point. I also got it in about 4 days as well
I don't mind refurb electronics. It guarantees someone has looked at it and made sure it works, and if it doesn't it normally comes with a fairly generous exchange / refund period. That said, I got my 512GB Steam Deck back in August 2022.
For me it didnt work the buttons to for a new steam devk brand new so i just updated and no luck and i did rma and again i got brand new but fixed
Ffs, I just got a refurb and the first thing I noticed is that the screen is horrible and has tons of light leak. I thought that’s just the way they all were.
I got my refurbished one today and there is no evidence that it was used. It even smells new like that new plastic smell
People might not have noticed, but on the refurb their is an unevenness with the top bezel, which makes me think the screen wasn't seated right. Even just ungluing and regluing the screen might resolve it. My guess is the bezel or the the alignment is off and pressing where it shouldn't from behind.
Nope, didn't see it with anyone's in my surrounding.
I got a steam deck a few weeks ago and immediately ripped it apart to do a shell swap. Like 70% of the screws in the console were too tight
My first deck had gyro issues. Sent it back twice before they sent a new one.
The second one the sticks rub. I'm convinced they just aren't made well.
But I'm so tired of sending them back and getting new messed up ones.
That I'll just deal with the sticks rubbing. It's pretty sad really.
My unit that I got brand new has that in that exact same spot. It’s only slightly noticeable when I first turn it on. Besides that, I don’t notice it at all. Most cheap LCDs have minuscule flaws like that. It’s honestly not that big a deal.
I'm pretty sure the light bleed and twisting issue is just from the fact manufacturing is not and cannot be perfect. That particular deck probably has some tiny manufacturing variance in the wrong directions to just flex the screen the wrong way. It could be in the screen, shell, or both. This is why small changes like the tightness of a screw or a flex can change so much.
3:02 how do you use a knife like that, and still have all 10 of your fingers attached?
My brand new Deck, that I've had for over a year, has some backlight bleed like that. It's minor enough that I rarely notice it.
Yeah my Steam Deck has some odd backlighting issues and I got it brand new, but I mostly just ignored it and don't really notice it unless I'm really paying attention to it. I've had it for over a year now and it hasn't bothered me.
They go on sale for $360 new. $80 can get you a 1 TB SD card so, keep your 64 Gig internal, spend a bit less and not have the headaches of R&R the SSD. I got about 55 games on such a card and runs great, including for Cyberpunk 77
why would you use unreliable slow sd cards when you can buy a reliable and fast 1 tb nvme drive for the same amount
@@googlacco You still have to R&R it without breaking your deck. One day I may get a 2 TB and dual boot it for the heck of it. For now, it does what I want it to do.
I got a q3 steam deck and it had the same light bleed issue! I asked Valve if they would replace it but they told me it’s not enough of an issue 😢
so my valve referb deck had a rare issue where the power management chip would cut power to the gpu because its faulty ive RMD'ed (they dont even ask if its a refurb unit) the deck and glad to know im not the only crazy peson seeing the light bleed (useing an obsidan theme from CSS loader and turning down brightness helps a lot)
My regular one and only steam deck is like that. Has a bit of bleeding. I guess some just returned it haha. I didn't really care.
One thing I one to point out, you called the shield a thermal shield. Which it could help with the thermals of the SSD sure but the real reson behind the shield is to protect the SSD from electro static noise. Because it is close to the CPU. Valve themselves have mentioned this and this is the reason they have printed "SSD is not meant to be user replaced" in their product page.
In practice you should be fine changing the SSD to a shield less one, but your milage may vary.
