    I remember reading the story of this song along the lines of "They were a couple, (i dont remember if they were married or not but they lived together) and suddenly she kills herself. He starts reading the diaries to try to figure out why she did it and he realizes that there is not a single mention of him in them. Its like he wasn't part of her life at all. That's why he questions the whole relationship including if she loved him or not as he believes that if he was so important in her life she would write about him in the diaries"
    (Or something along those lines)

      I randomly saw your comment and I've listened to BB back in the day a ton, but never knew this. Dope that you put it in a comment and the whole song I've heard a million times makes so much more sense.

      @@drewabbott6993 The one I heard was that he stumbles across Janes diary, Jane having drowned in the bathtub. He was reading through the diary trying to find his place in her life and see if he could have saved her, she must have been at a low before death ("Try to find out what makes you tick" could just be trying to find what makes her happy. "Would you like that" could simply be a question of if that is what she needs, which in the story would be someone to care for her). I'd assume looking at it this way, in the end he realizes that nothing can be done (As I turn another page, as I look the other way), but he can't get her out of his mind ("I still try to find my place in the diary of jane")
      Cool thing about the song is that you can interpret it however you'd like

      Benjamin burnley based this song off an episode of forensic files of a Jane doe that was found murdered.

    My interpretation of this is that a diary is what people use to talk about their life and so by extension, trying to find a place in a diary can be trying to find out their place in that person’s life. How much they mattered to that person.

    Oh yes, you guys are gonna love this band. I'd recommend the song Give Me a Sign for a really impactful hit, and Away for a very emotional track. 🙂💙
    Jane's name on the grave reads Jane Bryan, and Jane Bryan was a classical Hollywood actress who did a film called We Are Not Alone, which Breaking Benjamin had named their 2nd album, the one before this one, Phobia, after. Every song on Phobia is about some kind of fear that Ben had, and in this song, though Ben is very reserved about song meanings, there's a fear of unrequited love. This song is the band's most popular, and they usually end live shows with it, allowing the first few rows of audience members to jump onstage with them. It's one of the few that ended up being used on a lot of video editing tutorials in the early days of TH-cam, so it holds a special place in music history.

    Sounds like a song about a one sided love, he tries so hard to be a part of her story/life (her diary) but she has no interest in him or adding him to it, no matter how desperate he is. He never gives up tho, still trying to the end. I'm guessing at the end he finally gets to the edge of his desperation and ends up killing her and writes himself in her diary, thus finally achieving his goal.
    I've known this song since i was pretty young, one of my favs of the band and arguably their most popular song but I never really thought about the lyrics or meaning until now, thanks for that haha

    Jane had no reflection in the mirrors, after having woken up in her bathtub. She was in the afterlife after committing self deletion. But she left a diary, and the character the lyrics are speaking for is a guy who wanted to be in her life, he wanted her to have known him personally, but he never got the chance.

    In an interview in 2019 Benjamin Burnley, lead vocalist and songwriter of BB had this to say about the song;
    It all started because I was watching a lot of Forensic Files stuff where there were a bunch of unsolved mysteries. There was a Jane Doe that washed up on shore and she just got buried with no story. It was like a meaningless person. Nobody knew who she was to the point where whatever she did was all gone. So, Jane references Jane Doe but then making a story up for her because she had nothing. That’s what started it and then once I started writing, it turned into more than that. ... This person Jane was just gone because they were unidentified for so long and lived this entire life for nothing.

  • @georgeathanasopoulos1009
    @georgeathanasopoulos1009 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    My interpretation of the song is influenced by a post I read a while ago somewhere I do not remember.
    In the video Jane wakes up in the bathtub and she is already dead but she does not know. She moves to the room trying to see herself in the mirror but there is no mirror. For the rest of the song she moves from room to room trying to find a mirror that shows her but there is not a single one until she moves to the room with all the mirrors and she looks at it and sees there is no image. That's when she realizes she is dead.
    Now his lyrics,
    If I had to, I would put myself right beside you. So let me ask, would you like that?
    And I don't mind if you say this love is the last time so now I 'll ask would you like that ?
    Right beside you could be referring right beside her buried with her in the ground...He is contemplating suicide cause he can't bear being separated from her. Something getting in the way is probably her being dead. Something's just about to break, his heart. So he is reading her diary to see what he meant to her while his mental state slowly deteriorates as is depicted by the singer's facial expressions and tone of voice where it gradually turns more aggressive and mad.
    Reading her diary he tries to understand her while feeling sore and sick of being left behind. He gets frustrated and there's a thin line between love and hate and he is in the situation who hates feeling that way about her but cannot let go kinda loving his misery.
    Desperate he will crawl waiting for some love. No love there is no love since she is dead. Die for anyone what have I become is the realization that he shouldn't be like this and that he needs to wake up and keep living.
    As I burn another page as I look the other way I still try to find my place in the diary of Jane. I think this part refers to burning memories and actively trying to move on. So even though he is trying to move on he is still haunted by it.
    The video ends with him leaving behind a single rose inside the diary on the grave of Jane seemingly at peace. I would like to think this signifies him moving on finally and while it will haunt him forever at least he can go on without her.

    I like how everyone that reacts to this doesn't catch onto the meaning right away. Jane committed suicide, he's reading through her diary to figure out where he fits in, if he should kill himself to be with her. But because he finds nothing about himself he refuses to make the actions.

    It's funny that no one pays attention to the video sequence.
    She wakes up in the bathroom, this links the beginning and end of the video.
    She runs around the house in search of mirrors or photographic portraits, but nowhere can she find her images or reflections.
    Thus, she feels just like her boyfriend who could not find a single line about himself in her diary, he lived in a world in which he did not really exist, and now she also finds herself in a world in which she does not exist.
    In the end, she manages to find the room where the mirrors are hidden, but unfortunately she still cannot find herself in the reflection, after which we are shown Jane's grave.
    The bathroom that was shown at the very beginning of the video, she committed suicide.
    Ps. Why does everyone think that her own boyfriend killed her?
    They lived together as a loving couple but suddenly she committed suicide.
    He found her diary and began to read it, perhaps he wanted to understand the reason why she killed herself.
    When he began to delve into the diary, he found that there was not a single word ir even mention of him in it, as if he did not exist for her at all.

    I’m pretty sure it’s about someone in a relationship dealing manic depression due to their bipolar disorder and contemplating staying with them or realizing you’re not exactly selfish for leaving the situation. Unfortunately bipolar people who go into manic depression are unfortunately likely to harm them selves and even commit suicide. If this happens (something I dealt with in a previous relationship) you have to fight the guilt of “was I being selfish, or was I right to leave for my own well-being) from what I read from the lyrics and listening to this song for the past 15 years

  • @KaizerHiwatari

    I think the name Jane is a clue. Jane Doe. She has no reflection. She is nobody, or could be anybody. To me, this is the story of a man obsessed with the idea of love and romance, so much so that he will resort to extreme measures to get it. The ending scene could be interpreted one of two ways: His obsession has advanced to the level where he is willing to kill someone if he cannot have them, OR that he has "killed" the obsession, leaving the the rose and closing the book, finally able to move on with his life. In my opinion, the moment of clarity where he screams "There's no love--What have I become?" seems to point towards the second interpretation. I hope so, since I do love a happy ending :)
