Hadn’t even heard a song until I heard smells like teen spirit and I lost my damn mind in nirvana for years and decided to join a band and became a pretty shitty guitarist. @@micah4973 This is 100% true, but it fits the song so well. The song is about society forsaking drug addict overdoses, as if they deserved to die for using drugs. They are forsaken by society, and often by their families.

I am so moved by the line, “Why have you forsaken me?!” I then heard an interview with Serj and Rick Rubin about Serj not being able to think of lyrics to finish of the song. Rick told him to go into his library and randomly choose a book. If I remember correctly, Serj blindly chose a Bible and randomly fell on this line. I love SOAD and Rick Rubin, and it is yet another cool story about them.
I still to this day remember the moment my stepson walked in the house and threw the CD Toxicity at me and said..."These guys are right up your alley", up to that point I had never heard them, since then I've seen them 3 times and have always been amazed seeing them live, great musicianship and so much energy, they're awesome, and lines "Why have you forsaken me" get me every time.
Don’t know if you ever heard the story from Rick Rubin but that’s the line Serj was stuck on when Rick Rubin told him to go to any book on the shelf in his library and pick a book and passage at random. Serj picked up a book, opened it and pointed to “father into your hand I commend my spirit.”, a quote from the Bible. After that he finished the song.
It's so entertaining watching your reactions to SOAD and your analysis of Serj and Daron's vocals. You really should cover their song "Aerials", it has a lot of vocal range to it and a little less energetic death growls. I think you'd love the song to be honest.

Serj is a master of the unexpected. He keeps you on your toes throughout the whole song, no matter which one it may be. His early stuff is just as good, but this is a classic. Again, love the reactions!!!!!!
The original title of this song was "Suicide" but the studios, somewhat understandably, couldn't allow this. So Serj, tongue in cheek, named it " CHOP" as in "CUT OUT" and "SUEY" as in "SUICIDE"-- with a reference at 2:00 eating Chinese takeout visibly unamused.
This is actually not the case, although I always thought it was i.e. the studio not allowing it. Serj said that it was the bands decision to change it in his autobiography. He preferred the new title and as well as the original not being a great title anyway, he said it was because the song isn't about Suicide anyway.
Nothing to do with "cutting out". The title came from the links between the words "righteous suicide" sounding a bit like "chop suey" -> "right chop suey side".
I have come to recognize when a song/performance has you entranced/mesmerized/flummoxed as you let the song play for quite awhile before pausing. SOAD had that effect on me as well the first time I heard them. :)

Would love to hear you break down any from the swedish metalband Opeth. They are silk for my ears! Every song they make is years in the making and it itself a masterpeice. Perfection.
SOAD is so good. That era of mixing in some rap style along with rock was blended perfectly with this song and them has a hole. Harmonies thought out to perfection. Just so Dang intense music that I knew you would embrace
I'd love to see you at a SOAD concert, jumping up on stage in the middle of Chop Suey and telling the band, "Guys! We've got to go back to the beginning. I've got to hear those harmonies again!" Love your reactions.
Little Rocker ! Good on him , my son used to go crazy thrashing from side to side as a toddler in his child restraint seat to Iron Maiden's Powerslave 🤘 . He turned out to be on the spectrum and now loves Johnny Cash ! ? 😁🇦🇺
The producer of this track said that Serj couldn't come up with an ending for the song, so he took him into his personal library and told him to just pick up any book and flip to a random page and read it to get his juices flowing. Serj happened to pick up the Bible and flipped to the passage: "“Then Jesus, calling out with a loud voice, said, 'Father, into your hands I commit my spirit! ' And having said this he breathed his last”. He liked the phrase so much, and it fit the theme of the song so well, that he just took the words verbatim and created that crazy ending.
The GOAT Rick Rubin produced this album... Man, I remember so vividly when I first heard this song in 2000, so emotive, so from angst to sadness to an angelic crescendo. Toxicity is a Top 10 album of All Time...belongs in the National archive right next to Master of Puppets.
On the podcast "Broken Record" that features Rick Rubin(who produced Chop Suey), Rubin explains how the lead song writer/singer created the bridge part after writing down a random passage of a book he picked up off the shelf in the library of the house they were recording this song at. It worked perfectly. (th-cam.com/video/1P__qjVB9Tc/w-d-xo.html)
That eireness is the same siren-like chromatic notes wavering in-out continuously, both during the verse and the chorus. SOAD was the master of transitions. Period.
I love this band and will watch anything from them, you will be amazed if you hear Serj voice on these songs live *Serj Tankian - Elect the Dead symphony * Empty Walls, Lie Lie Lie and Gate 21. Awesome reaction as always 👍
Since you've taken a first look at Chop Suey, I EXTREMELY URGE YOU to look at Serj Tankien's isolated vocals for this music. It is a god sent. Also, you HAVE GOT to react to Hypnotize anf Forest. For me two of their greatest songs and vocal delivery.
Great reaction good to see how open minded you are with different genres of music .👍 I think the distinguishable two voices in harmony at the end , make it more inviting for Audience participation , more anthem like . Problem is , it makes it hard to commit to which voice you want to wail along to ! Either way there's something about that harmony that makes you sing along with gusto and conviction , they arranged this with perfection . Great band , we just need more 😁
You still need to check out Myles Kennedy of Alter Bridge. Especially Words Darker than their Wings live with the Parallax Orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall
Ahhhh I thought he was saying Father but it's Further!! TOXICITY one of my absolute favorite loud Jamms!! Guitar player wielding a Ibanez Iceman!! Cool!! Great Reaction Bethany!! Peace 🕊️☮️♾️😎
You were right the 1st time. Its a reference to a Bible verse, Luke23:46. "Then Jesus, calling out with a loud voice, said, "Father, into your hands, I commit my spirit! - And having said this, he breathed his last". It was the last phrase of Jesus Christ upon the cross. It is a powerful moment, and one that indicated the end of Mosiac Law. Also, when he sings, " Father, Why have you forsasken me?" Its also a quotation of words Jesus said while he was crucified.
Once you dive into their lyrics and the meaning behind it brings a new level of appreciation. Wake up, live in chaos, ask the void why you’ve been forsaken, rinse and repeat.
This feels like when you are listening to your favorite song by way of headphones and your mom barges into your room every 10 or 15 seconds to remind you of things you need to get done that day. (SOAD August 2024 Golden Gate Park 🔥).
"Eerie" is so bang on, this song almost spooked me a hit when it first came out and I could never put my finger on way. I also love the "my" that you shine light on here. As always I LOVE the way you make me listen and appreciate songs differently, and I love watching you hear my favourite bits for the first time ❤

Every time ❤
Yeah same here. Beautiful.
... the added piano does it for me

@@joeschmoe6908meanwhile punk bands made 9/11 into an album lol
I think you’re projecting a bit, based on your own memories around that time lol. I’m not American and I didn’t get that sense from this album. Frustration, anger, sadness sure, but SOAD has always been a political band singing about all the greed and pain in the world
Lots of credit goes to the drums for keeping time and signaling transitions.
I recommend checking out a Metal band from France called Gojira, especially the official video for the song "Silvera"
Silvera is such an energetic song.
I enjoy your channel very much with all your input and the way you give your honest opinion on every type of music. Your expressions show how much you love what your doing,So I just wanted to say thank you
I'm always a big fan of harmonization, so songs with it will draw me in big time!!! It's definitely the vocalist in me as I always try to find harmonies in songs when I sing as well.
You should try their song “Question?” for vocal pairing and contrasting. It’s really good.
ABSOLUTELY. BEST song they’ve ever done behind Chop Suey. And the video is mesmerizing.
listen to holy mountains. both Serj and Darren harmonize on that song very well together
Agreed!
Another great choice, the one thing that stands out in all of your videos is your genuine love of music :)
Would love to hear you break down any from the swedish metalband Opeth. They are silk for my ears! Every song they make is years in the making and it itself a masterpeice. Perfection.
These are preforming artists, not just singers and musicians... It is beyond talent,,, THIS is ARTISTRY....
I love this song for its meaning and the way the band makes us feel❤
One of my all time favorite songs of all time, and really the song that brought me back into metal.
There's a part of this song in the animated film Sing 2 and my 5 year old goes crazy every time ❤ great tune!
Little Rocker ! Good on him , my son used to go crazy thrashing from side to side as a toddler in his child restraint seat to Iron Maiden's Powerslave 🤘 . He turned out to be on the spectrum and now loves Johnny Cash ! ? 😁🇦🇺
I know it's not your area of expertise, but can we appreciate the work of their drummer?
He's amazing.
I absolutely love your SOAD reactions! You're so good at picking out all of the little artistic nuances that make them so brilliant!
the camera angles on this video are incredible
The producer of this track said that Serj couldn't come up with an ending for the song, so he took him into his personal library and told him to just pick up any book and flip to a random page and read it to get his juices flowing. Serj happened to pick up the Bible and flipped to the passage: "“Then Jesus, calling out with a loud voice, said, 'Father, into your hands I commit my spirit! ' And having said this he breathed his last”. He liked the phrase so much, and it fit the theme of the song so well, that he just took the words verbatim and created that crazy ending.
I heard this song on the radio once, and I had to get the album! One of the best albums of all time! 🌿🌸
Cristina Russo did a multitrack breakdown here on youtube. The isolated Darren screams of 'father' are something to behold. Worth checking out.
That multitasking breakdown was great. There is so much going on in this song and Daron's screams are just animalistic.
Funny that he didn't mention which book it was...but we can all put two and two together
When angels deserve to DIIIIIIIEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!
I remember hearing this for the first time when Toxicity just came out and it was mind blowing.
Yes, Holy Mountains please! More votes
I will also say that Holy Mountains is one of their best songs!
@@joeseph2258 absolute true
One gets in love with this woman just looking at her expressions!
That eireness is the same siren-like chromatic notes wavering in-out continuously, both during the verse and the chorus.
SOAD was the master of transitions. Period.
*eeriness
Great band , we just need more 😁
I have to do an urgent task at work, but gonna warch this first🎉
Me too this is more urgent 😅
You still need to check out Myles Kennedy of Alter Bridge. Especially Words Darker than their Wings live with the Parallax Orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall
Suggestions by this band is amazing! Shows all of serj’s vocal range!
Ahhhh I thought he was saying Father but it's Further!! TOXICITY one of my absolute favorite loud Jamms!! Guitar player wielding a Ibanez Iceman!! Cool!! Great Reaction Bethany!! Peace 🕊️☮️♾️😎
he says father... what do you mean?
You were right the 1st time. Its a reference to a Bible verse, Luke23:46. "Then Jesus, calling out with a loud voice, said, "Father, into your hands, I commit my spirit! - And having said this, he breathed his last". It was the last phrase of Jesus Christ upon the cross. It is a powerful moment, and one that indicated the end of Mosiac Law. Also, when he sings, " Father, Why have you forsasken me?" Its also a quotation of words Jesus said while he was crucified.
@@madmex2k That's Awesome!! Thanks!! ☮️
Once you dive into their lyrics and the meaning behind it brings a new level of appreciation. Wake up, live in chaos, ask the void why you’ve been forsaken, rinse and repeat.
That's why music is universal. He can catch anyone, anytime, anywhere, anywhere.
I'm so thankful that you reacted to this song. Everytime I listened to SOAD, I say to my self, I hope @TheVocalyst comes across this song!
Babe, they are legendary!!!
I’m happy that finally you hear them.
Soad unreal, always 🤘🤘🤘🎸
The piano at the end is just stunning.😊
The intro is on acoustic and then when it gets heavy it's the same chords on electric guitar with distortion. It's a very common technique.
What can i say , i knew it , insta like. I wish when i was a kid and listened to this, to have a guys like you , to listen with me. Thank you
This feels like when you are listening to your favorite song by way of headphones and your mom barges into your room every 10 or 15 seconds to remind you of things you need to get done that day.
(SOAD August 2024 Golden Gate Park 🔥).
Once you hear Chop Suey, you become a forever follower. Wait till you hear them live.
This time period had so much good music
I love watching your reactions to "crazy" music.
hehe, so fun watching you nerd out over one of my favorite bands. Thanks for sharing!
Holy. You are reviewing rock bands! I often see vocal coaches reviewing these kind of genres! Thank you for appreciating all kind of music. 👊🤘
"Eerie" is so bang on, this song almost spooked me a hit when it first came out and I could never put my finger on way.
I also love the "my" that you shine light on here. As always I LOVE the way you make me listen and appreciate songs differently, and I love watching you hear my favourite bits for the first time ❤
Thank you for letting this play instead of interrupting every 30 seconds.
you must react to Aerials, Serj's vocal range is forever set in history
