      It became almost some sort of reflex to say "move X didn't come out!"
      At 5:18 he starts saying "360" while Gief actually does a 360. It's his real life option select: he says "360" and when he doesn't do one he adds "..didn't come out!"
      Btw not his only trained reflex. A lot of times he also says "didn't blo-" and then realises that the hit actually did got blocked and shuts up.

    That WangBooty person at 35:00 played a legit zoning game by timing her/his attacks on a bad and impatient player. The fact that s/he was able to frustrate Phil into making mistakes was an extra bonus of that zoning.
    Phil also does the same thing with Gouken in USF4, so his whining and calling WangBooty a pussy for zoning is an example of hypocrisy.

    • @jazzygeofferz
      @jazzygeofferz 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      +Fu Man It's typical Phil. If he wins that way it's "Perfect zoning" if somebody uses that technique against him and he doesn't know how to deal with it it's "Cheap, scrubby online play". He's a HUGE Hypocrite.

      Tempted to add Annotations explaining that Gief's SPD can be hit and thrown out. Philip never understood that and never tested it out and just assumed "Oh wow dood! Lag took away my SPD and I lose to scrubs! Come the fuck on man!"

    I love ST and I don't think this guy could ever win a match against my dog. Or the gf playing with her feet. Or me playing blind.
    Or Daigo without Daigo touching his Stick.

      +Ciphercdr It's like he expects the game to detect that a 360 has been input and in spite of any hit/blockstun that may be going on drop everything and give him the command grab, but you can guarantee that if such a mechanic was to exist and somebody did the same stuff against him he'd cry bullshit.

    Okay so I have a theory in regards to his lost skills in fighting games. Like any activity the more you do it the better you get, and that's all he did for the years before TH-cam. But once he started played other games more often for TH-cam and for fun he gradually lost his muscle memory/skill in the fighting genre.
    So when he occasionally returns to the genre (like in this beta and most likely the full release) he has the basics remembered as well as how and when to push which buttons to be atleast average but since he doesn't focus on the genre and instead plays many he has sort of become a "phil of all trades" and then he plays as shown in the video, also blaming the game for his faults in an attempt to feel more secure in regards to the fighting game skills he used to have.
    tldr; he has lost his muscle memory/focus on fighting game and thus lost the time to fine tune his gameplay like he used to before his TH-cam "career"

    • @assattack2459
      @assattack2459  8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      +Knight Artorias Honestly. I think him being good at ST was a total fluke. He played other popular fighting games at the time (MVC1 and 2, 3S, Tekken, and maybe one or two others) and he was terrible at all the others. Just terrible. Maybe he's (almost) a savant when it comes to ST? I don't know. Because when he started playing SF 4 (in 2009) he was STILL playing ST at a competitive level and occasionally going to tournaments. Thing is that he was "good" but he wasn't "as good" as Alex Valle, Jon Choi, Damdai, Tokido or Daigo who are probably the best ST players in the world.
      I think he just took to ST's unique rules and understood the game whereas in everything else he never takes the time to understand the game and doesn't have the patience or humbleness to ask questions and learn.

    • @abyssalwolf
      @abyssalwolf 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ass Attack Also possible, and more likely considering who we're talking about.

    • @bassvillain
      @bassvillain 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Knight Artorias
      What's worth noting is that his purported "skill" in ST is supported only by a tournament win in the notoriously bad port of the game on PS1. And the tournament didn't have a lot of the FGC alumni in attendance. There are plenty of replays of his Vega (among others) and he is not standout in any meaningful capacity.

    • @lich109
      @lich109 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Knight Artorias If you listen to how Phil described it, the only reason he got so far in the tournaments is because the characters are broken (like the bison that can effortlessly perfect the opponent). Even by his own admission he has no claim to fame.

    Is he REALLY getting salty about being baited into jumping over a jab Hadouken and being punished with EX Shoryu? Surely as a "former pro fighting game player" he'd know about basic tactics like that? "Nothing I can do." Yes there is; Jump straight up rather than jumping into Shoryu range. Force him to change his tactics? No, it's obviously the game's fault Phil hasn't learned in the 25 years since Street Fighter 2 came out that if you jump over Ken's jab Hadouken you will more than likely be punished by an uppercut.

    What hapenned with Phill's skill? Well it evaporated. He's stuck with his mindset from 2000's nad didnt evolve. You NEED to evolve in e-sports the game is not set once and for all like footbal or volleyball or other traditionall per say sports. The mechanics change the rules change people change. Phil lost track in the very first SF IV. Since then he didnt give a shit about being good at it. He thinks he should be because he's good in SFT bu that's not how it works and he doesnt understand that.

    • @dermaskiertemuchacho6139
      @dermaskiertemuchacho6139 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Noza Nagasaki Phil was a good overall SF Turbo player. He also IIRC won EvoEast some year. He beat many good players. What is true is the fact that he really trained for those skills and then stopped. He is not that much of a natural to be good without training and since all he does is play casually he simply will never be good anymore.
      It's just like +Fiku Miku said.

      +James Chadderton In the entire set on his channel, he used Gief's V-Skill in 2-3 matches tops. That's including one match in this montage. He had roughly 45 matches altogether. Pretty bad.
      His V-Skill is kind of bad I feel. You can only really use it if the other guy is playing fireball keepaway and you want to build V-Trigger meter. Gief might be able to use it as an Anti-Air parry kind of thing but I dunno. Still, you'd think he would have experimented with it.
      It's very telling that he doesn't do the one thing you SHOULD be doing if you get wrecked in a fighting game. You learn. Like, all he had to do was go into training mode and test shit out and he would have realized that "online bullshit" was legit.

    See, I was gonna try a Street Fighter game but if there are people like Phil I ain't playing it. I'll stick to Mortal Kombat and Tekken

      @jacobdavidson2242 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Please don't let that stop you. I like MK and Tekken a lot too, but I think you should be a bit more open-minded about fighting games. Nearly every time I try a new fighting game, I love it. Not telling you what to do or anything, but I don't think DSP should stop you from playing great games.

    I'll give Phil some credit: He picked the most underpowered character in the game. Meanwhile LTG plays Nash and constantly bitches about Cammy. Much fail.

      While you are somewhat right, the stuff he whines about things that aren't even related to Gief.

    • @assattack2459
      @assattack2459  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Keep in mind, this was beta 3 or 4 and the entire game wasn't figured out. It's still not completely figured out. This was before anyone said that Gief was low tier. But even keeping that in mind, Phil makes amateur mistakes all the time with the character. I would have dismissed the match with Wang Booty (the Nash player) when Phil got caught by the super because, okay, not everyone knows how to get out of every move in the game because this was beta 3. But, he did not even bother with training mode to recreate the situation and see what went wrong. BTW, he NEVER uses training mode outside of learning BNB combos and very basic things about the character he's using.
      The training mode in V is absolutely fantastic and allows you to setup practically any situation to figure it out. And it was very good in Beta 3 too. But Phil, instead of admitting that he didn't know how to beat that, just rages and insults the Nash player.

    1. DSP Phil himself is an idiot.
    2. I don't play Street Fighter, so I don't know the terminology, and therefor feel like an idiot.

      +Dante Vic I like to be fair. In the full set of matches on his channel he won roughly half the time. The matches in which he won weren't terribly skillful but I wanted to highlight his worst and how he never demonstrates an understanding of the game. Any time he compliments he compliments anyone (like the Necalli player towards the end) he does so through gritted teeth and I thought that was important to see.

      That's actually a horrid rate for someone that is a "former pro fighting game player". I know that he only won a single tournament, and that was because he used a piece of shit, broken character in a version of the game so different from the arcade port that almost every high level player opted out, but he still got 4th in Evo 04

  • @styx87
    @styx87 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Why are people saying he sucks at this game he's better than like 90% of the people i seen play. He's not tournament level but he can probably beat all casuals and most veterans...just sayin

    • @lich109
      @lich109 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @lich109 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      styx87 Upset? How? All I did was point out your incredibly low standards.
      From the looks of things you've gotten more than a little upset over this.

    • @styx87
      @styx87 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +lich109 so your saying you can beat him in a ft10? how good do you think you are im curious? i beat you dont even play fighting games.

    • @lich109
      @lich109 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      styx87 I'm thinking that I wouldn't have any problems playing against Phil, and you know why? Because he only ever has one strategy. He's learned one move or one combo, and everything he does is based off of making it work, the only thing you need to do to screw him over is to stop that from happening, whether it be rushing him, throwing, or just projectile spamming. I've seen it happen to him again and again, because he refuses to learn and adapt to a different situation and he never has a backup plan besides "bitch at the game".
