I always find peoples first reaction to Donna funny because shes the only one to react "normally" to doctor nonsense.... You grow to love her but the immediate aversion is always funny

honestly, I love the introduction of Donna as an almost companion, she is a lot when she first shows up but look at it from her perspective. She went from walking down the aisle on her dream wedding day to being (accidentally) abducted. It was a stressful moment. I think the slaps were pretty justified with how stressed the situation was for her. Once she was no longer feeling unstable and vulnerable she immediately became nicer and more understanding. The 'karen' attitude is a total defence mechanism from her, she even was unable to truly hate the man that targeted her, insulted her, and tried to kill her.
Also I think her being so big and loud and abrasive from the first second serves as a nice palat cleanser for the audience that is primed not to like anyone since they miss Rose.

I agree, Donna being so completely different from Rose made it really easy, for me at least, to enjoy the special without resenting Donna for trying to "replace" Rose. The shift in tone from the finale, with the car chase and humor as helps shift the gears - for the audience but also for the Doctor. He doesn't get a chance to wallow in the sadness and grief from his final goodbye to Rose, he's immediately thrust into this new mystery and into a completely new rhythm with Donna. I think if Donna hadn't arrived when she did, he would have dwelled too long with his pain, until it became an emotional wound that could never heal. Insread, he had to put it aside and so by the end of the episode, although it's clear how much emotion it brings up, he's able to say Rose's name.
The Tardis/car chase was one of the times that I most thought this newer version of the show was really doing stuff the classic series never could. In a good way - the old show didn't really have the effects or budget for that kind of chase.
It was an aggresive use of the budget. And I'm all in for it.
Russell said that was he always wanted as a kid. They would be rolling along the highway and he dreamed of seeing the TARDIS flying along the motorway, so the kids in the car were RTD.
@@sallyatticum Brilliant. I love that! And I've alway felt that scene with the kids in it and their jubilation at the Tardis rescue of Donna.
Catherine Tate and David Tennant became best friends as soon as they met for Doctor Who and have done multiple projects since.
Why are there sooo many spoilers about the future of Donna in these comments?? Normally I see people playing the game with this for new reactors. Bit of a shame.

Rose holds a special place in many peoples' hearts because, despite their flaws, you never forget your first.
But nothing to do now, but raise a glass to the end of season 2 & the start of a new season of Doctor Who! Enjoy!

That extrapolator they used to change where the tardis lands was from boomtown where margaret the slitheen was gonna use to surf off of the rift in cardiff.
i love Donna, she cracked me up in this episode, but then it got kinda sad when he said he didnt actually love or like her...but he got what he deserved 😂
Aw I liked Donna. I thought she was hilarious and I was all ready for someone a little older and that would not moon over the Doctor like Rose did.
Catherine Tate had her own comedy show at the time this was filmed. She was brought in secret. So, she was a celebrity guest star for the Christmas Special...which is often the case with Doctor Who.

I felt bad for Donna, that betrayal was harsh. I was a little upset w/her too, but to see her deal with that and just the general crappiness of some of her fam, it just made me like her. Especially as she didn't choose to let it change her, to darken her.
I guess I should go sub to Rekkai. My grandmother was born in 2014 and she passed about 15 years ago now I think. The years start to blur together. At least we had them for as long as we did.

Took my young niece and nephew to a Doctor Who exhibition a few months after this aired. They had lots of props, including the Racnoss, which was a huge physical prop that the actress slotted into the front of.
I could watch you laughing at the Empress on a loop for hours.. :) Shout out to Jeralene.
Rose is one of my favourites, but one of my most beloved companions in the series is on the way next, in the third series of NUWho.

Trust me, after about 77 or so more episodes you will be *so* okay with "Doctor Who"'s constant changes because you'll have so much lore in your head to deal with, discuss, debate, etc. Welcome to either Season Three or the verge of it, depending on how it's listed!!!

I lost a Grand Aunt recently she was the youngest sister of my grandma and she was like my replacement grandma on my dad's, because my real grandma died when I was young.
Excited as always for another Who reaction from you two! This special is so much fun, and I definitely get Donna being annoying at the beginning, but I can't help but enjoy her on subsequent watches. I think the moment the Doctor shows her the creation of Earth is a turning point for Donna, as she gains a new perspective on her own life, how focused she was on herself and not on the greater world at large. I also think it's a very interesting parallel with Rose's first Tardis adventure with the Doctor, that Donna should be shown the beginning of the world while Rose saw the end of it. I'm sure there are many different ways to interpret what those opposite trips symbolize, in relation to the Doctor, as well as to the respective companion accompanying him.
For me, I've always seen this as the start of season 3. The way Rose and the Doctor parted feels like a conclusion, the closing of a book, whereas this episode feels like a new beginning, or a prologue of what'a to come. Thematically too, I feel this episode matches the tone of Season 3 more. The scene from this special that really sets up what's to come is the one at the end of the episode, when the Doctor asks Donna to join him and she says no, explaining how horrible some of the experiences she had with him were. It makes me think of a post-reaction discussion from awhile back, when the question of saying no, or leaving the Tardis, came up. If Rose represents the best of us, the idealized self who is brave and daring and eager to see and experience everything, Donna in this scene and episode is the realistic version, the one we're ashamed of because we know that fear is powerful and could make us turn away from opportunities out of fear of the unknown. Donna had a taste of the wonder but said no because it was dark and scary too.
Donna also tells the Doctor to find someone, because he needs someone to stop him. That line always stands out to me...and is another big reason I see this episode as the start of season 3. We know he's not going to be traveling alone...
So excited for your reactions to Season 3!! This is my favorite season, and also has my favorite companion. I cannot wait for your reactions, I think this is going to be a really great one with a lot of interesting topics, themes, and characters to discuss! 😃

I’m really enjoying your reactions to Doctor Who, and your observations at the end. I started watching when it was rebooted with the 9th Doctor. I would say Chris Eccleston is my Doctor, but David Tennant is one of my favourite actors. I’ve watched everything from the 9th to current episodes, and have gone back and started on Classic Who which I’m really enjoying. The 1st Doctor is a grumpy grandpa, 2nd comes across as a jovial imp, 3rd has an immense amount of swagger, and 4th is completely eccentric. I’m loving it.
Finally..... I've been looking forward to s3 ...... just wait

Donna is a bit much at first but she does improve as the story progresses. To be fair, she is rather stressed at the start of the episode. Happy to see you didn't take a long break from Doctor Who - looking forward to the next episode!

Rekkai kinda reminding me off geekedoutnation whenever a doctor who story wasnt grabbing his interest he would be looking at his phone half the episode. That dude hated the cybermen so everytime they were on it was like yea he checked out. Think the worst I saw on that guy was when i was on his patreon watching some full reactions and I swear 75% of the episode dude had his eyes glued to his damn phone. I was actually more upset that he actually had someone to talk to that much since I dont lol. But was like ok dude if you dont like the show any more you can come out and say that and just quit..... which he did do though he did it via a poll after growing a larger disney audience so obviously they voted the show down like crazy to hopefully fill the slot with another disney show. sadly youtube never got the common courtesy explanation as to him quitting. sadder still he was 4 episodes from capaldis finish which ironically his 1st episode was jodis 1st episode so he could have at least gotten to that point to not have this tiny awkward gap

You cut out one of the best scenes which i wanted to see your reaction too was the bit when the Doctor makes a quick speech to the racnoss "My home planet is very far away and has long since gone but it's name lives on, Gallifrey!".
The constant slapping was funny the first time round bit the next few times gets abit annoying very quickly.
I love the TARDIS car chase scene that was the best scene out of the whole episode.
While RTD and Steven Moffat were ahead of their time in many ways regarding social commentary they both, at this time, had an annoying blind spot when it came to the idea of females being allowed to slap the faces of males. Both writers have grown out of that now, but at this stage, I'm afraid, you haven't seen the end of it yet.
The Bride is annoying but not nearly as annoying as Tegan. IMO.

This is a sketch done by David Tennant and Catherine Tate I believe it was done after this episode but there is absolutely no spoilers to the third season so I'm sure it is before the next episode. It's reminiscent of a Saturday Night Live sketch. It makes me laugh way to hard. Catherine does great comedy sketches

I'm on team Rekkai, finding Donna so annoying ... untill I revised it after a few seasons later and, man, did she grew on me because of her unique dynamic with the Doctor. The fact that she's a good personal friend of David Tennant, having hem on her comedy show a few times and doing some Shakespeare on the stage together, and after watching the Doctor(s) going through some companions (they are all great though) I now see this episode differently and maybe one day, so will Rekkai (and become team Channy * pump fist * )
Donna is a lot to get used to at first, but.... No spoilers.
She's defintely going to take some time to get used to.
I really didn't like Donna in this first outing. But in a later adventure, the writers really showed her to be a character of real depths.
Also I'm glad that they introduced a companion who had a very different dynamic with the Doctor. The Doctor just wants to have a friend or two to travel.

You are going to enjoy the next episode. The lady who played Donna is a comedian by trade she was just brought on for this one episode but the people who worked with her loved her so much they may bring her back but not this season.

Donna does have a Character Arc. She isn’t just there to be loud mouthed sidekick. But her character does grow affecting the story later episodes along with other companions.
All I'll say is I didn't like Donna in this Christmas Special & when I saw she was coming back for Season 4 I was reluctant to watch that Season with her in it, but she grew on me quickly when watching Season 4.
She's going to need to grow on me. But I'm willing to have my mind changed.
