Wallace and Gromit are a huge part of my childhood. Their animated shorts are some of the most creative and charming I've ever seen, from their vacation to the Moon that is made of cheese, to a penguin that robs a huge diamond with a pair of electronic trousers to a robotic dog that steals sheep.

A Grand Day Out is possibly a little less technically accomplished as it was made while Nick Park was a film student, but all the basics of the Wallace and Gromit universe are there. There's a fourth short, A Matter of Loaf and Death, made after The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, and another film due for release in 2024.

What makes me appreciate this film so much is how much Aardman defied Dreamworks’ requests that would have damaged the feel of ‘Wallace and Gromit’. The biggest one was that Dreamworks didn’t want Peter Sallis voicing Wallace, because he wasn’t a big name in America and he was about 80 years old around this time, and actually suggested someone like Tom Cruise to play him. But Nick Park, the director and creator of ‘Wallace and Gromit’ just flat out said, ‘No’ since Sallis had been the voice of Wallace since the very beginning, and he would continue to voice Wallace until his retirement in 2010.

I also love how there are subtle nods to their previous short films like:
Gromit building the giant rabbit hutch feels like ‘A Grand Day Out’
The overall mystery feel when Gromit’s putting it all together is like ‘The Wrong Trousers’
The plane scene and their system of getting ready at the beginning, straight out of ‘A Close Shave’.

Funny thing with the mention of melon, in the uk version it was called a marrow but the studio didn’t think any one would understand what a marrow was. so they wanted it changed to the American food version. This would have been a monumental reshoot of the movie as the word didn’t fit the established claymation work so as a compromise they went with Melon.

    "Queensbury rules"
The Marquis of Queensberry Rules, also known as Queensbury Rules, are a code of generally accepted rules in the sport of boxing. Drafted in London in 1865.
The electric sign outside the Fruit & Veg shop said "Harvey's".
There's a famous play (made famous as a 1950 film comedy starring Jimmy Stewart) about a pooka (a nature spirit from Celtic folklore, similar to an elf) who exists in the form of a 6-ft tall rabbit who can choose who to be visible to.
A brassica is a vegetable genetically a member of the cabbage family (includes brussels sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower, and kale).
Claymation is a subgenre of stop-action animation. Claymation uses figures made of clay.
Aardman Animation created & produces Wallace & Gromit, Shaun the Sheep, and "Chicken Run"; Nick Park has worked with them since 1985. They're well-known in the UK, from whose culture comes much of the situations. Gromit is the long-suffering intelligence behind inventor Wallace's production of devices. Wallace is known for his love of cheeses (especially a fine Wensleydale). Shaun is the sly independent sheep who looks out for his flock. Every Aardman story is witty, warm, and wonderfully funny. You should check out some of the film shorts of these characters.
Recommended: "Early Man" (2018). Same people, same technique, feature-length.

Aardman Animation have done some brilliant clay-mation shorts and movies. In the 2000's they moved into Computer animation with "Flushed Away", but tried their best to keep the claymation style, both visually with the characters and the character motion... and, oddly, IMHO, it worked. They were able to really stretch the visuals. Since then they have worked in both types of animation. And, yes - definitely check out everything they have done!! One thing that's great about Nick Park's work is that there's always good references in the Wallace and Gromit shorts, this one here alone has tonnes, the title alone is a reference, originally it was going to be called "The Great Vegetable Plot" until Katzenburg told him "market research says veggies are a no no with kids", so the name was changed to "Curse of the Were Rabbit" in homage to the Hammer Horror films which starred the likes of Christoper Lee and Peter Cushing... Peter Sallis himself had appeared in one called "Curse of the Werewolf" which is where this film earns it's homage.

There's actually a difference between the UK and US versions of the film:
In the original, Gromit is growing a prize MARROW, a larger species of courgette (or zucchini for Americans).
But to make the film more understandable for US viewers they dubbed over Wallace to make it a MELON instead. Which I guess isn't too bad, as melons and marrows are both part of the cucurbit family.
The channel Eddache did a good video covering this fact about the film in his Aardman & Dreamworks video: th-cam.com/video/MGvx1JrqJmU/w-d-xo.html

Wallace and Gromit curse of the where rabbit, I am happy you got to see this movie!!! Yes this film and chicken run are made by the same studio as well. In all of the behind screens, explain how a set is created scenery buildings characters as well, if characters are shown with different clothing they make different clay clothing facial expiration on faces, and the figurines are 6inch tall. All of this is created and shot frame by frame and The characters facial expressions movement is also shot frame by frame!!!!

Their short films in the 90s 'The Wrong Trousers' and 'A Close Shave' won an Oscar each and Were-Rabbit won two, adding to creator Nick Parks' haul of Oscars (6 in total)

I believe Nick Park has 4 Oscars in total, he has an odd BAFTA or two which would chalk up those six awards... I should know, I personally know someone who worked Nick's academy award winning short "Creature Comforts"...

Nick Park is THE director of the Wallace and Gromit shorts (you should watch them if you haven't, A Grand Day Out, Wrong Trousers, A Close Shave and A Matter of Loaf and Death) and Chicken Run (along with producer Peter Lord).

  • @robertbrookes2000
    @robertbrookes2000 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

As others are pointing out you should definitely check out Aardman's other works.
You've got the original shorts Wallace & Gromit came from:
    - A Grand Day Out
    - The Wrong Trousers
    - A Close Shave
Also post movie: A Matter of Loaf and Death.
Each are about 30 minutes so you could probably binge them all for one video.
There's also a few other tv shows they made, which probably won't work as reactions: Shaun the Sheep (who first appeared in A Close Shave) and Creature Comforts.
And here's the rest of their films you could react to:
    - Flushed Away (2006): Whilst it retains the look of an Aardman film this was animated without claymation due to a fire at Aardman studios.
    - Arthur Christmas (2011): Again CG not claymation, but a unique charming Christmas film.
    - The Pirates: In an Adventure with Scientists (2012): Back to claymation in this unusual pirating story
    - Shaun the Sheep Movie (2015): Like the tv show & the character of Gromit, this is essentially a silent film, but it tells a great little story.
    - Early Man (2018): An okay film about cavemen learning how to defend their way of life from the Iron Age.
    - A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon (2019): Again like the first film, it's a silent film, this one has a great deal of heart in it.
