  • A great day at Cap Blanc Nez on the French coast using the PRC-351 and Chameleon Hybrid-Micro/whip for a 30-mile cross-channel contact with Peter G4MHU in Sandwich. Sorry about the wind noise during the QSO, wrong microphone, my bad. I have to say, the little PRC-351 did great. / radioprepper DISCLAIMER: The Radio Prepper logo (depicting a microphone) is indeed inspired from a famous flag created in 1775. Any day operating portable outdoors in nice weather is usually a pretty good day! Yes, I wish 6M had more use, and especially the simplex (and SSB/CW modes) above 50MHz, including 2M and 70cm.... There seems to be a lot of unused or lightly used spectrum up there. Nice job - fun seeing the manpack in action!

    Brilliant that you managed to get a contact on 6Mtrs. I have never had a contact on 6. I went portable the other day to listen out for a 70cms DMR transmission and managed to receive the signals from over 45 miles away which was amazing but unfortunately they could not hear me as my radio was programmed incorrectly, Still trying to get my head around DMR programming. being Simplex DMR no network is needed and the signals are Crystal clear.

    I love your channel, however you say that the surf unit is a tuner which it most definately is not, its intended to narrow the bandwidth (by tuning to the frequency in use) to allow two or more radios to operate in close proximity without interference. so whatever the SWR of your antenna was, thats what you used, well done getting the contact on 4 watts.

    Good job, that's a sweet spot for QRP.
    If You are fan of Clansman (from videos looks like You did :D ) and don't need antenna for backpacking (can get it via car) You can try Clansman GSA (Ground Spike Antenna) tactical VHF antenna. Mounted just like Chameleon into ground but in tactical VHF do not require any tuner - in large frequency blocks You just change count of radiating elements.
    About TURF i don't think You actually tune it.
    I was operating it long long long time ago when do not have any electronic and RF background and i was train it's act like narrow band pass filter - and deflection of needle is just to show if You set it up into right cavity to pass desired frequency (to block RF from interference from other radios nearby) - but just like said, that time i was not RF person and just follow instruction without asking questions.
    Maybe You can grab a SWR meter and connect between radio and turf - that will be a good lesson.
    Regards 73!

J'ai passé plus de temps à expliquer aux passants ce que je faisais qu'à trafiquer, mais c'était très sympa, et ça fait connaître un peu le hobby ;)

    Do you know if there are some plans French hams will get the 4m (70 MHz) band in near future? In the UK there is some activity on that band on FM, probably more than on 6m and the PRC-351 has coverage on that frequency too. Best 73 de S57RW.

    Hello Gil, you need to try Tesla RF-10...definitely lighter, smaler...with squelch. In complete package you get 4 antenas - 1. short whip (tested about 5-7km) 2. 1,5m whip (tested 7-35km) 3. wire vertical half wave(tested 70+km) 4. half rhombic antenna which have great directional effect...but is a bit huge (70km+). All those range are tested on original RF-10 accessories even 30 and more years old batteries!!! 1W RF power... at the moment we testing Li-ion battery upgrade, we just change the cells in original case...we get more than 10Ah capacity and we save about 100-150g of weight. Radiot it self have 16W final output tranzistor, so we are trying increase the output power. When you see how small and light it is, you will love it! I will make few foto photo for you, also...if you are interested, brand new RF-10(complet accesories) in airborne case (can be throw out of the helicopter in 400m without parachute) cost 50€. And one more great advantage, the output final tranzistor is made in USSR, so... you dont need care about SWR....never...made for use in absolutely crazy conditions, of corse it is water proof and you can use it like a weapon in close combat and than make QSO again. Disadvantage is only 1W output power in its original state.
    BTW, good job, the PRC 351 look great. :) We need make F-OK QSO ;)

    • @RadioPrepper
      @RadioPrepper  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I might... Or a TRA-967 if I can find one, but the RF-10 is cheaper. Where do I find one for 50 Euros? I definitely should get one or two for that price!

    • @peterostender8627
      @peterostender8627 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      In Czech Republic are 1 or 2 Army Shops, which sell them for 50€, if you are realy interested, send me email, i can buy them for you and make shiping...i doubt they will speak eng. or they will be happy about go to post and send it to France. Btw, they are brand new, never used - only tested. There can be only dead battery, but it is wery easy to change original Nicd cells for 18650 Li-ion. Those radios was more than 20years in warehouse, so you cant expect battery will live, it is 50/50 chance. They sell it with 2 pieces of battery, i was buy 2x RF-10, so i get 4 pieces battery, 1of them was in excelent condition, 1 have about 50% capacity, rest 2 are dead...but it take 30-45min to change them for 18650...so, it is not big problem.

    Bonjour Gil. This is a great video. It amazed me at just how clear you could see the UK. Ive never been able to see France like that. Also a great video for radio. Im still trying to get a QSO with my PRC-352 set up. Ive bought a GSA antenna to see if that will help.
    I have read that the SURF unit can limit the radios performance. so If i get up a hill this weekend im going to try with out the SURF.
    Looks like you haven't bought an external speaker yet. ?? Ive got one and i think its brilliant. As you can have the set with squelch open but limit the volume through the speakers amplifier. The hand set can be plugged into the speaker and its audio is limited same as the speaker.
    Have you made a video about your home made yagi you were using ? Was impressed you could work UK repeaters.
    You seemed to draw quite crowd during your recording.
    Ive now subscribed so i wont miss your videos.

      Thanks Dave. It rained the day before, so the air was clean. The GSA should work fine, it is supposed to be much better than the pineapple. As to the SURF, I think you do lose about a Watt in it, but you gain a bit of performance by matching the impedance, so who knows... I have heard the SURF does help. I use mine with non-resonant antennas. The GSA should work without it. If you get a QSO, you might want to try both and ask your contact which is best... I am curious... A speaker is definitely on my "to buy" list! Yes, I did make a video about that Yagi, look for it. Well, the 6m FM PRC-351 contact surprised me much more than the repeaters. The difficulty with the 351/352 is to find someone to answer your calls!

    Sir, I am very interested in becoming a HAM operator but fear it is terribly time consuming to become as proficient as you are.
    If I may ask, how long have you been operating the radio systems I see you working with on TH-cam?
    I have fewer days ahead of me than behind but to hear you speak about various pieces of equipment and talking the "lingo" as with those you speak on your radios with, I gather you've done so for a VERY LONG TIME!
    Did you learn in the military (inexpensive education if not expensive in other ways) or was it all learning on your own?
    Perhaps, one day, I can get to speak with you via radio from here in the state of Arizona in the USA.
    Lofty dreams, no doubt, but a person can dream and aspire, right?
    Take care and I await your next video (and hopeful for a response to my questions.)
    Thank you.

      Hello Howard. Not that long... I got my license at the end of 2012 after reading the ARRL exam books for a couple weeks... That said, I have gone a bit overboard with this hobby, and I already had good notions of electronics. It is not that difficult though, so don't be deterred. You can start with little study time and little money. Best would be to find a local club, but you can learn on your own, at your own pace. The lingo is just that, same as for any hobby or sport. The are three license levels in the U.S.: Technician, General, and extra. I highly suggest that you at least get the Technician and General books and study for both. There isn't much difference between the two and the book chapters are similar. I studied for all of them and passed them all in the same session, so believe me, it's no rocket science. Get those books are start studying, you are only a few weeks away from your exam, and you will pass :-)
