    Help Gil.
    Awesome video as usual. I've also been considering the T1 because it's so much smaller than the Russian tank sized LDG z817.
    thanks for sharing and happy new year.

      Thanks Julian. Size is the exact reason I did not even look at the LDG. Happy new year!

      Caution. That tuner is not good for the FT817. It takes way to long to tune and you risk the fragile finals in the rig. Hi SWR for to long of a time. I went thru 3 times replacing finals until I stopped using taht tuner and went with a manual one.

    • @RadioPrepper
      @RadioPrepper  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep, good advise! I would only use it on a low power setting or with radios sporting bullet proof finals.

      nr3rful ah oh! I used it a bunch of times on my ft-818 at 6watts. It’s seems to tune pretty fast. I don’t think anything was hurt but how would I even know if it was?

    • @RadioPrepper
      @RadioPrepper  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Better be careful with auto tuners and the 817/818. Best to use a resistive bridge or tune on low power.

    Thank you for the video, it gave me some ideas for how I can adapt and make the T1 better once I get around to buying it. As I will be using mine with an FT-817 I will angle the control panel and change the case and move the battery, maybe changed to 6xAA sitting over the board, and probably change to SO-239 connectors and a bigger but metal case. 73's from NL

    Thank you for showing the T1 tuner. On thing about military batteries many can be dissembled. If that’s the case the cells can be replaced.

    I got the T1 because it was small, lightweight, fast, and had a memory. I looked at the comparable LDG QRP tuner, and didn't like it very much. I have a lovely LDG for my Icom, but it's rig-specific and only works with an Icom, I think. Anyway, my LDG takes too much power to tune -- it's a 100W tuner -- and the rig I wanted the T1 for is a software-defined radio with a max of 5w out. It works perfectly for the task! I have to put it near the radio; it's much too far to the antenna, up on my roof! I'm currently configured for digital mode use on the radio, a HobbyPCB RS-HFIQ SDR. Hope to find you on the waterfall someday, Gil!

      +Gwen Patton Excellent Gwen, same reasons I got one. It also works on 6m which is great. I put 30W SSB/CW and 20W FM into mine and it handles it fine. Watch the prepper frequency thread on radiopreppers.com, we will have a weekly sked test soon...

    Did you use metric hardware for the lug on the counterpoise, or did you manage to find 3/8'' hardware?

      Hello, I took it from the dipole mount kit included in the MPAS. They are near impossible to find in France. I look on Ebay for stuff like that.

  • @dovetomarc

    Excellent. Thanks. Question: I purchased the Jawmount from Chameleon. It does not include the long nut that you have on top of the Jawmount that you screwed the matching unit into. Their manual shows installation by just putting the matching unit through the hole on the Jawmount and using the supplied washer and a nut to secure. Your setup looks faster. Can you tell me what you fastened to the Jawmount to accept the matching unit? Thanks.

    • @RadioPrepper

      Hi, that piece was included at the time. It's a 3/8x24 long nut.

    i have had the t1 as long as i have had my ft817 - and thats a very long time. its a seriously good tuner and very low power consumption because of the latching relays. thats where your money goes. only criticism is the crappy box and switches and bncs. you will be replacing these parts every year or two so best just rebox it in a diecast case with good quality honeywell switches and bncs that bolt to the case. seriously do this before the constant repairs start to ruin the pcb. if you use the ft817 autotune adapter, replace that connector as well, as both end will have problems. while you do it, splice in a socket to daisychain data cable or bluetooth adapter. you are best to squeeze all those in the case with the t1. the t1 will just fit in the battery compartment of the ft817 with all those bits, so you can eliminate a lot of cables. you then need to rig a few lipo cells under the top cover. its tight but can be done. dont forget balance board.

    Its a real shame some of these guys only want to collect callsigns. I'm a cheapskate, I like building tuners. I do like how compact the t1 isperfect to put in a small bag with an ft-817

      You're wrong here. While the radio has an internal tuner, it only works with the whip antenna or wire connected to the terminals because using coax for the Dipole or any other antenna requires you to remove the coax bridge that connects the transceiver's RF output to the internal tuners terminal and whip connectors. ;)
