    This has to be my favorite collaboration I've seen yet, all the tomato reactions were priceless! In regards to using tomato as fuel, you'd probably have a bit more luck nitrating the powdered tomato and then mixing the nitrated tomato with another oxidizer (nitrates are good, but chlorates and perchlorates might work better) to help burn any unreacted residue. That's just my thoughts anyway; loved the video!
    And...
    Tomatoes are disgusting!
    ...(unless their corpses are mashed into a pulp, mixed with seasoning, and used as pizza sauce, then they are mildly endurable).

    When performing the nitration it is a good idea to saturate your ice water bath with baking soda. This way any unintentional spills are quickly neutralized. Also, if the reaction starts running away you can can just dump it in the ice bath.

      @markinipannini 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Is it though? Not a chemist, but I think this is actually kinda stupid.
      1) "accidental spills" would get neutralized anyway - it's a couple of drops of acid into liters of water
      2) I feel like in a case of emergency or if the beaker breaks, dumping acid into fresh water and then neutralizing it slowly would be much safer than dumping it into a strong base and neutralizing it immediately. I mean wouldn't that create some very high temperatures that might vaporize the liquid instantly and splash a bunch of unreacted acid on your face - or worse, might detonate the explosive you were probably making?
      I've never heard of anyone making their ice water bath basic when nitrating stuff, so I gotta ask... Are you an actual chemist or is this something you just came up with based on no experience in chemistry whatsoever and decided to call it a good idea, while possibly killing someone who tries it?

      @@cberge8 I just got myself put on multiple watchlists by looking up a bunch of articles on nitrocellulose, nitroglycerin, etc synthesis and haven't found one mention of making your bath basic and it is generally considered to be a horrible idea to mix a lot of acid with a lot of base very quickly, let alone when there are potentially very sensitive high explosives involved but ok then

    I'd suggest a 2nd nitration, this time at room temperature (no runaway will happen since it is already nitrated), this allows the nitric acid to fully nitrate it as after 1 nitration it usually is only dinitrocellulose and not the trinitro form you want which burns much mush quicker.

      In theory... You could, but it would take a LOT of tomatoes. You'd have to separate the pure cellulose, then treat it with acetic acid, then again with acetic anhydride and catalyzed by sulfuric acid. That would give you cellulose triacetate, which is a bioplastic with some higher temp thermoplastic properties but requires some more expensive solvents to work with. However, if the triacetate is treated with water it can be hydrolized into cellulose diacetate, which has lower working temps and can be dissolved in acetone and spun into a fiber. So you might be able to spin a filament out of it and successfully run it through a 3d printer....maybe.

    Hey Integza I have video idea: I recently heard of a yeet cannon which is called a "spin launch" ( giant circular box with a rotateing boom inside that is attached to the center of it. It spins and generates a lot of force ). You can make something like that but definitely on a much smaller scale. Project will use your 3d printed rocket and it can basically yeet everything you think about. You can make it to launch for example the tomatos far away from you. For release mechanism use for example just a rubber band at a place where it's meant to go out of box the thing that is being launched will fall out by itself. And good work getting to 500k🥳

      A proper rocket engine is far to complex to build even one rocket engine. He might be able to make a electric turbo pump fed pintle injector engine. It would have to use kerosene and nitros oxide or something else to produce lower heats then the standard Rp1 Lox engine as he would most likely need active cooling due to the lack of turbo pump exhaust.

    I know i'm a bit late but you can make a powder with your dried sugar-free tomato , nitrate it and then filter it with just a funnel with a cottonball at the bottom so just the solution passes and your nitrated powder stays. This should give you a better nitration therefore a better burning rate.

    You should make a rocket with bread, i mean turn the bread into alcohol and use that as fuel!!!

  • @MatrixRay19
    @MatrixRay19 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    First you used the sugar on the tomatoes to make fuel, on the second attempt you decided to use the cellulose and nitrate it to get the fuel, however none of them worked as good as expected, why? well, because you were only focusing on one component at a time and the rest were obstacles per say.
    So, we have 3 main components on a tomato:
    1. Water
    2. Sugar
    3. Cellulose
    ~4. Disgustingness~
    Water is just a no-go for fuel so we'd still need the tomatoes to be dehydrated/dried, the point here would be to both make the sugar fuel as well as nitrate the cellulose on the mix. I'd also like to point out that it is common to caramelize the sugar fuel to get rid of moisture and just to make it solid.
    If we combine all I've said here, I think it would be possible to make a reasonably powerful fuel.
    I don't know the best order of processes nor the safest one, but we aren't here for the safety aspect :P
