How to Replace a Chevy Truck Fuel Door Spring Clip

  • In this video i explain how to install an OEM fuel filler gas door spring clip for my 1997 GMC Sierra K1500 pickup truck. The part that I used is an OEM 1552-1575. A link to the part is provided in the description below. According to the description, this part fits 1988 - 1999 GMC, Cadillac and Oldsmobile. I provide step by step instruction for removing the fuel door, inserting the clip and reinstalling the fuel door. I also highlight the importance of using penetrating oil when removing rusted screws. Because I neglected to use penetrating oil, I also had the opportunity to demonstrate how to remove a seized and broken stud from the fuel door mount.

    A set of 2 bar magnets at harbor fright cost 99 cents. Put one on top of door and one on bottom. Boom fixed

      What bar magnets are you talking about? I looked on Harbour freight and there’s nothing that will fit in there.

    Today I just opened the fuel door and heard that dreaded noise too. Thanks for the tutorial on replacing that spring. (debating if just putting a magnet there to hold it closed might be easier since I'm sure I'll be busting some bolts too on my old 2010 Colorado.)

      You’re welcome Paul. Yes a magnet would definitely be easier. Yes, those rusty bolts can be a bear sometimes. Just soak them good with some liquid wrench and you should be good to go.

    I just replaced mine on my 93 k1500 . A lot of the times it’s not the spring but the bar that the spring clips to . In this case you need to disassemble the entire unit and use parts from another fuel door . It’s tricky but it is possible

      @@BudsSmartHome just had to do it to my 93 k1500. Both the door and the spring rusted away. thankfully my uncle had a few laying around and was able to snag a good one

      Yes, mine ended up failing as well. I was able to fabricate some metal to replace the metal bar, to which the spring attaches. it’s working great and the truck is still running well. My 1997 Sierra will be 27 years old with about 114,000 miles come 2024.

      @@BudsSmartHome glad you were able to get it fixed. Your truck looks in great shape. My 93 just turned 30 and it’s got 122k on it. Love that truck to death and I’ll do whatever I need to keep it going. Trucks older than me 😂

    mine fell off yesturday, i looked at it, took the four screws out took the inside holder out, the inside springs were completely gone, i had to drill two new holes add new screws i found that fit and put it back together fixed it, put it on the truck back working like new. pretty easy fix.

    Thanks for the demo. Mine is one of those that the bar is rusted out. I will try to weld in a rod to replace it. And you had turned the bolt the correct way when it stopped you attempted to go back forward it broke. Maybe some super penetrating oil would have worked.

      Thanks for commenting Duane. I eventually had issues with the pivot bar as well and had to fix it. About the broken bolt, I’m aware that I was turning it back. I used WD-40 in lieu of, penetrating oil. That was my downfall. I was trying to turn it back in to work the lubricant into the threads when the bolt broke from the pressure.

    I'm betting that like my Colorado chances are the spring is fine and the problem is that the slot the spring clips into is rusted out and broken. At that point you only have 2 choices. One is to buy the entire door assembly which will then need painted or rig up some magnets to hold the door in place.

    two tabs on one side and one big tab on the other side, Where the big tab goes was broken off so I used magnets to hold it open and magnets to hold it closed. Glued magnets in place. Broke off a screw too lol

      Mine is a 97 GMC Sierra SEL 4x4. It is extended cab with the 6’ bed. It has only 114,000 miles. Not bad for a 25 year old truck.

      Good job! I believe the 1997 GMC sierra takes The 1997 GMC Sierra gas tank fill spout uses a T25 Torx screw. It doesn’t have to be that long I think an inch and a quarter or an inch and a half would do.

    Hey, it did show that it was very very difficult. But the part where you actually were successful you left out. You also never told how long it actually took you? So I really didn’t learn much other than it’s going to be very difficult.

      Hey thanks for watching and commenting Wade. Yes there’s an old mechanic’s trick I deployed here. When a bolt turns out rough, you soak it with penetrating oil and then you turn it back in to properly coat threads. After doing that, you can usually back it out without any consequences . Unfortunately I didn’t take the time to get penetrating oil and I used WD-40 instead. Wrong choice, bad outcome.

      Yes I had sprayed it with penetrating lubricant and I was backing it back in to lubricate threads so that I could work it out. I should’ve waited longer for the penetrating oil to do its job. My bad!
