Thanks for the information, this helped quite a bit. To those who may be intimidated, it is easy work provided you have the proper tools. Originally I wanted a locking fuel cap for my diesel, but GM doesn't offer one, and I've had issues with 3rd party vendor solutions, so this (or something similar) is the only real choice. Anyone that lives in a high crime area knows fuel theft isn't as much of a problem as is vandalism. I considered buying a lock and installing it myself, but I didn't want something that looked home-made on a new $60,000 truck. A couple of suggestions: - I found the rivet head got 'stuck' in the drill bit and started spinning. Holding the back of the rivet with locking pliers solved the problem. - The diameter of the screw head is smaller than the rivet head, leaving a visible ring. Some touch-up paint corrected that.
Very happy with the door post install but when i was drilling the holes i broke off the head of my 1/8th drill bit. In my opinion make sure you hole punch it as good as you can (the metal kinda gives so it's tough) and start off with a 9/64 bit to handle the metal without breaking your bit. Enjoy and thanks for the installation video!
go to home depot and but a small lock with the cam (toolbox lock) and drill a hole in your gas door --- damn near the same thing, and don't have to match paint
Followed these directions to the letter, but on my 2009 Silverado, after starting with the larger bit, the cobalt bit went in about 1/4 of the way and boom the rivet started spinning. What do you advise to get the rivet off now? It's hard to get a pair of channel locks back there to hold them still and finish drilling. I'm considering using a dremel to cut the rivet heads off. Any feedback will help.
Have you tried using needle nose pliers or needle nose vise grips? Let me know what you come up with? Your cut off tool idea sound like a pretty good solution.
For the cost of this and the time involved to replace it is it really worth it? Are you that paranoid about someone stealing your gas? For that price you have to have someone steal like 5 tanks of gas just to make it worth the cost of buying the Locking fuel cap. How likely is it that that's going to happen that many times.
well gas is up to $4/gallon soon so if they steal only 10 gallons that's the cost of a locking gas cap right there. If they pour salt, blood, bleach, sugar whatever inside the tank then you're out $3000 for a new fuel system or engine. Are you paranoid to spend $40 over paranoia? I saw my cap removed today so now I'm locking up my shiz
8 years later and still useful thank you

I heard you can cut an "X" in those two rivets with a Dremel and they will easily punch out
