I just started using this technique. Love the set up.
There is one benefit you didn’t mention,…
You can pull the lower stopper down to the weight or as far down as you want, pull the upper stopper where you want it. Now a good floating bait can have a different look as it rises to the top stopper. When you pull it, it lowers again toward the weight and then rises again. Just a different presentation of the drop shot. Maybe call it free drop-rising shot.
As for some who say you can’t use the pencil/barrel type weight where you pinch the line in the eye, not true. Simply widen that eye with a small screwdriver and easily can tie it on using whatever knot you want.
Never caught anything on a drop shot all year long. Hoping this presentation will help change that.
Thanks for the tips.
Wow will be rigging this up for the weekend to try for sure. Thanks Mike for the great new rigging setup.
brother i thought about doing the exact same thing years ago with all the benefits you mentioned but what stopped me from bothering with it is that there won't be any tension on that hook when the fish grabs it and you go to set the hook it will slide and you have to rely on the sinker to hit the fishes mouth creating enough tension to set the hook by which time the fish would have felt something wrong and spit it out plus you need to then have a strong knot on the sinker and not able to use those clip on drop shot sinkers, today i figured out how to make a fixed yet adjustable drop shot rig with only one plastic bobber stopper bead per hook, it may have some drawbacks but i think it will perform much better at catching fish and not losing them but ill have to try and see how i find it, i will do a video to demonstrate how to make it
There is enough tension in the bobber stop to set the hook without it sliding, unless you are using bobber stops that are too big.
how do you know there will be enough tension to keep the hook from sliding down the line for any size fish have you tried this?
"unless you are using bobber stops that are too big." huh do they come in different sizes and what difference would that make? @@adt83live
anyways i made a rig that uses a bobber stopper bead that has the line going through it knotted in a way that keeps tension yet still can be loosened to adjust for depth @@adt83live
I thought the same thing
@@adt83live pretty sure i left you a response but for some reason i do not see it now? yt is famous for this shadowbanning crap
Thanks Mike, I would have never thought to rig a drop shot hook like that. Very cool can't wait to give it a shot, makes total sense.
Just awesome ! It is very easy to make ! Thank you very much ! Kind regards from France
love it! and especially for those of us who can only carry (or afford) two or three rods it is easy to slip off the rigging and move on to your next step up
This is freaking genius! I love the drop shot and this new rig will definitely get used this weekend with the gilly. I absolutely love your channel, you always have great content.
Thanks James!! 💪
@@mikeiaconellifishing hey Mike check-out that msgbi received after leaving a comment on the video ? I have a feeling it's a fake msg.
Mike, thanks for the picture at the Pickwick Grocery last week.... I love this technique..... never thought of it.... It is going to get some air time on Pickwick from me from now on!
Mike, i am new to drop shot fishing. Just mastered the sinch knot! I gotta try your free style method, thank you for making It SO SIMPLE.
Thanks Mike, I never even thought about that before. But I love a drop shot.
I like the adjustment ease of this rig, this is great 👍 another great video by the IKEMASTER
Thanks! I have all the things you mentioned. I will try this great tip.
Love this idea. I enjoy using the dropshot all year . So simple ..
Simply awesome....thanks Mike!!!
Fantastic explanation opened my eyes. Thanh you for sharing 👍
Definitely cool idea & I can say I haven't done or used that. But a kayak busy of mine back from OH actually has been doing this for 2 years that I know of. It's only way he rigged a drop shot. I do something similar but with Texas rig. I put bobber stop before & after my tungsten weight so I can pull to bobber stop up out of the way & have my weight move freely or can can peg my weight in-between the stops at any distance from the hook. I think of it as an adjustable texas rig or a finness carolina rig. I've been doing that with my texas rigs for few yrs now. It works great for me
And this is why your my "go to" guy. Been a fan for yrs along with my son. Thx bro
💪 thank you!! Never Give Up!
This is awesome. Love drop shorting and this will take that to another level
Your enthusiasm got an instant sub! Thanks for the content.
Love it brother, "must try".!! Thanks again.
This could be a game changer!!! Thank you, Mike!!!!
This is great. Already bought and trying at st clair next weekend.
Mike - yes - I like the Shop videos. This drop shot method seems like a great improvement over what I have been doing. I had just about stopped drop shotting because I found tying the hook on correctly with the right length leader was challenging. Hook turned out upside down, leader too long or short, etc. This method solves that. I think I will tie the weight on securely though so nothing slips off when the big one bites. Thanks for this video.
one way to keep your drops shot hook straight up every time is to insert the tag end of your knot back into the eye of the hook.
Been watching your channel for about 6 months and I’ve learned so much just want to say thanks❤💯✊🏾
Thanks Kurt!! Welcome!!!
Sooooooo glad you mentioned the tying on the hook and it being upside down, I always have that problem and never hear anyone complain about it, hated tying it 3 or 4 times to get it it upright. It was like hitting the lottery when it was upright on the first shot. lol. The fish pulling the weight off scares me on this one but I could just tie it on, not a big deal.
Another great video. Thank you Mike !!And thanks to the viewer who mentioned that we need to tie a secure knot to the Weight!!
Omg wow yes! Blew me away brother! I pray for nothing but success and happiness for u my friend
As stated in previous comments, genius!!!! Thanks for great content and love your enthusiasm, one of the best fishing channels on TH-cam!
Is this legit? I got the same comment
Thanks for explaining this so well!
Man just when you think you’ve seen it all. BAM! Good job mike. Love it.
Awesome tip!!! Can't wait to try it. I hate tying hooks on the drop shot the traditional way.
I like it Mike! I drop shot fished all year with great results. My only concern would be, when the worm gets caught in the grass after sinking, the tugging pressure on the hook would outweigh the bobber stop. This would cause the bobber stop to move and now the gap between the two stops would be much larger. That's too much free play for the hook in my opinion. I'll try it though and let you know!
You are a great teacher.
I'm going to try this one today like, thank you for the information
Wow! BRO! you saved my fishing life... I've always been a Iaconelli fan! Thanks again!
What a cool technique Mike. I love drop swimming a Megabass Hazedong and was looking on TH-cam for any other drop swimming techniques. I fish where you fished the US open, thats my home lake. Thanks for this tip Mike.
💖👍💖 Wow that was so cool, I love it... can't wait to utilize it.
That's a relly good one! Thanks man!
Mike you can also use your bober stops for Carolina rigging instead of a barrel swivel I use 4 big VMC bobber stops so when you cast the weight won't slip down your line and since you don't use a barrel swivel you can adjust your depth without cutting your line.
Don't know how I NEVER thought of this. HATE having to tie a dropshot, but use them a lot. Thanks Ike! NEVER GIVE UP!!!!
I'd want to know the slippage rate when you do hook a 4lb smallie and see if those bobber stops slip any
@James Rose the bottom bobber stopper may move down usually the top stopper stays in place so you can just move the hook and stopper back to the location before you caught the fish and be ready to go.
@@michaeldevito9507 The problem is all the tension is on the weight so it needs to be tied on or it will definitely slide off.
I tested this rig. It works great, but you can’t get the fish in before it pulls off the hook, sinker stop and sinker. This is a blue gill rig.
@@billwhite8656 Tie the weight on!
Seems it would be a tough hookset with the slippage.
Thanks for the awesome tip Mike I haven’t used the drop shot lately but now seeing this I will definitely be putting in some work using it! Thanks🎣🤙
Hello Outdoor Life, I got one of these TEXT you are a winner messages too. Is it legit or a con?
@@johnkent9019 i don’t think so bud, there’s been some other TH-camrs who have said that they’ve been receiving the same thing so not to reply if viewers are getting them also
I'm sold. Keep posting new techniques.
Super great rigging idea but with weight tied on. Thanks for showing the rigging tof this great fishing technique. I love your videos so keep making them. Thanks for your autogragh and the enjoyable conversation at icast at BMC
at Greenville. Your videos are super informative and will definetly help me catch more bass this year.
I've been using this style of drop shot all year and just found out it was called a free drop rig. 😆
Good to see a legend showing it though as some people think I'm crazy and almost everybody thinks you can't set the hook with this setup. I have rarely lost a fish using this technique.
hmmm idk how the hook wont slide down but glad to hear it works for you, what about using bobber stopper knots instead of beads? that way you can always tighten them again to adjust for any loss of tension pluss it is less visible hardware for the fish to see
Thanks, Mike! I’m re-tying all my dropshot rigs.
A lot of people expressed concern about the stop slipping when setting the hook. I guess that depends on how tightly the stop grips the line. If you don’t trust the stop, tying an overhand knot around or below it will stop slippage. If you are tying the knot, you’d might as well use a glass bead, a knot of heavy fluorocarbon line, or a second, fixed hook, instead of the stop.
You can still adjust distance to the weight by using one of those slotted weights with rubber inserts or lightly crimped split shot. With fluorocarbon line, the visibility of the extra tag end matters a lot less than the weight.
(When snagged, I want the weight to slip off so I don’t lose the rest of the terminal tackle. Replacing split shot is quick and easy.)
By having the hook and lower stop slid down, you don't have that and leader whipping around. Makes it all compacted down at the weight. The lower stop cushions the knot
@@randybrodman3959 That would be a positive trade-off, but if it affects the hook set, will it matter?
Has seemed to effect the hook sets. Just a quick, short jerk seems to be all that's needed. Really sharp hooks would be a must.
BRILLIANT, JUST BRILLIANT, cant wait to try it
This is awesome! Thanks Mike!
I almost passed on this vid, But I'm glad I didn't , I always overlooked the drop shot rig because of having to do a bunch of knot tying, This method will solve all those issues and prevent the need for a barrel swivel too, Thanks Mike , from one Philly Boy to Another , you Da Man !!!
Very clever and will have to try tomorrow when I go to collins lake with my old man. There’s some big spots in there and I’m curious to see how the hook set will be with no knot! How cool thanks Ike
Give it a shot!! Never Give Up!!
Can't wait to try this rig Ike 👍
Never seen it but i know I'll be using it Mike. Thanks for this one.
Heck yeah! 💪 give it a shot!!
Awesome content always learning awesome content thanks Mike
Thanks for the support William!!
Mike I've been using this rig for a year and it's made a difference in my way I fish a dropshot
I think that’s awesome you can adjust length so easy and fast. Great video buddy. Thanks
Thanks 👍 Never Give Up!
@@mikeiaconellifishinghey Ike! I’m using 6lb line for this rig. Had a great time this weekend and caught several fish with this rig. However a few times I lost fish because the weight broke off. Maybe I set the hook too hard. Would you still use large size stoppers for 6 pound line?
Another brilliant presentation. I don’t have to purchase any additional tackle!
Thank you.
Thanks Dennis!! Give it a shot!!
Made drop shot, super simple thanks Mike 👍
Heck yeah Terry! Give it a shot!
🤯🤯🤯 trying this tomorrow when I hit the lake 💪🏼
Good one Mike! I love drop shotting and this rig makes sense. I'm not completely sold on the bait being able to circle the line at will but, I do know that will save a lot of line twist! Gonna read the comments and see if anyone has used this and, see if there are any pitfalls. Sinker stops cost more than knots but, if I have to cut the entire rig off when I want to jerk bait fish or something else, I guess the lost/cut off line costs offset the sinker stop cost. Gotta find a video here that shows how to re-use sinker stops!
Thread your bobber stops back onto a sewing needle. Then you can re use them. 🤯
Thats absolutely genius Mike. I'll never rig a dropshot the same.
Mike, you're freakin awesome besides you make me laugh!!!!
Awesome! Thanks Ike!
Very cool advice 👍👍👍👍👍 thanks🤩🤩
I love the concept and look forward to trying it out. My only question or concern is with the hook set. Do the bobber stops provide enough resistance or keep from sliding while setting the hook and can you keep pressure on the fish during the fight without slipping too much and potentially losing the fish?
Thanks a lot for this Mike! So easy and smart :)
Heck Yeah! Give it a shot!!!
Give it a shot and miss your fish, you'd be left with one peg stop
It’s really going to work , loved it , thanks mr Mike
Thanks Spooky!!!
Very cool. Thanks.
Mike, you just blew my mind with this one. It's definitely taking over my drop shot this year.
💪 heck yeah!
Dude, I'm freaking serious, why haven't I thought of this? Or anyone else. I don't see any videos on it, on my normal TH-cam guys, who are professional angler's haven't had anything like this. Your the man mike! Keep standing out and #nevergiveup
💪 Never Give Up!!
@@randomheroat420 how’s your hookup rate? I just feel like when I set the hook, my hook and bobber stop is just gonna slip and I won’t get good penetration
@@thaddeusgrubaugh2913 it's good if you use the right size bobber stoppers. I tried it in a pinch with larger ones and that's what happened to me, other than that, it works great. I've tried it a few times here ny. The smallys love it.
sweet rig mike love your videos
Nice idea Ike
Love it! Thanks IKE
Thanks!! 💪
Love it already onit. Thanks
Ive been using the VMC Finesse neko hook with the threaded on presentation that you suggested in one of your in the shops! Loving the hook ups with it by the way! im assuming it would work with this setup?! another amazing
video!! Thanks!! 👍
Greatly helps with line twist increases your range without retiring gives prey a different look increases catchability
Great video thank you
That was cool mike going to try it
Good stuff Mike
Crazy! I did exactly this over the winter for ice fishing so I could adjust my hook height.
@TEXT+①(⑧⓪④)⑨⑨①-⓪④⑥③ unless Ike is kicking down my door telling me to catch a bass! I’m going to say this is spam lol
Gotta try this.
I've been doing this for a couple of years with great sucess, plus you don't get as tangled when you hook up like the conventional drop shot . I'm going try the water bug that' looks real good .
What a great idea! I generally fish ultralight line and tackle when dropshotting, 6lb fluoro. VMC says that the large stops are for 12-20 lb. Should I downsize to line weight (which according to the description on Amazon would be a small)?
Genius! IKE, you are the F-ing man!
Thanks for the info i absolutely love the dropshot .But i need to know something what keeps the fish from pulling the hook off. dose hr
the bobberstop hold it on.
Ike thats absolutely ingenious!
Give it a shot!!
Great trick. I’ll try it.
Awesome video Ike! Brilliant! Definitely wondering how I didn’t think about that! Will make drop shorting a lot easier, faster and more productive!
Fantastic idea Mike , no problems with setting the hook? And do the bobber stops slide down to the weight during hook set ? Fight ?
That smart. Thanks 🙏
This tip deserves a subscribe!!
Absolutely a no brainer I love it
Looks awesome
Threw this rig a couple nights ago and got my 1st drophot bass here in central WI
I've experimented these variations of the free rig. Like this video, instead let the hook slide freely on the line with a wacky worm. The weight should drag the worm down with it until it hits the bottom and the worm will have the weight less fall. Also experimented doing a traditional free rig with a sliding leader using a Tokyo rig style or swivel with line. Benefits should be a free rig fall and when at the bottom you can fish it like a dropshot or tokyo rig offshore with a couple inch leader.
In San Diego, our fisheries are always so pressured I resort to the drop shot so much. This will be a great technique to try. I feel like I will need to knot on the weight though.
Come on out to fish the west coast
MIGHTY MIKE Does It Again!!!
That is the best thing I’ve ever seen.
nice tip, Mike a new way to rig a half Senko for smallmouths
Nobody ever told me about this set up. One day I just kinda thought of it myself and started using it. . It is really a great rig and so versatile.
what kind of line you using and what fish you after with this, have you lost many fish using this rig though?
I know this is old news now, but I stop my boat and fishing for 4 years (not on jail btw 😂) I'm back in the water and getting up to date with everything new, this rig is simple and amazing, and to learn it from the best is a no-brainer, TY Mike!
Yes they do
