Finally, a TH-cam fishing channel that says, "You don't have to spend $500 for a rod and reel". Thank you from a guy whose PB is just over 8lbs caught on a $40 WalMart spinning combo.
I caught a 20lb and 15lb grass carp on the 36" 15$ uglystik/shakespeare combo with 6lb line. The fish were longer than the rod. I used a dropshot setup with #6 octopus hook with pieces of chicken nugget as bait. I recently upgraded the reel to the smallest pfleugan wich cost about $30. It's now my fav setup for fish up to 15lb.
Best friggin dropshot tutorial of all time. That was so informational .. he kept it simple so you could understand what he was talking about . And the knot tieing was superb .
Thank you man. I have watched 50 videos like this “mistakes you making” they just tell you the “mistakes” they don’t break it down and explain how to fix them. Also towards the end when you were explaining how to actually work it on the retrieve was awesome. I definitely have a bad habit of going too fast sometimes. Thank you very much. This may be one of the best educational bass fishing videos on TH-cam. Even though there are products he doesn’t try to sell - he literally says some certain ones suck 👌🏼. respect.
I think you covered the entire A-Z drop shotting technique in this one tutorial. EXCELLENT presentation of not only technique but probably more importantly the worst mistakes made for the method. I agree with some of the commenters that this is the definitive drop shot TH-cam video out today. THANKS for taking the time to bring this to us!
Damn Ben, you have just given the best explanation of the drop shot, and how to use it, that I have ever heard. Even with the amount of knowledge that I have, I still try to glean anything I can from everywhere I can, because in this game the more knowledge you have on the subject, the more fish you catch. Great job breaking it down for us man.
Brilliant tutorial on the dropshot! I'm from the UK and this is the best tutorial I've seen on TH-cam. Just what I've been waiting to see as a novice to dropshot 👍
Great video. Just started trying to use a drop shot setup. I learned I've been using the wrong style hooks, and retrieving it to fast. Very informative video 👌
Thank you Ben for such an informative video. You make a lot of sense and come off in such a cool, clear manner it makes watching your videos so enjoyable. Much appreciated.
Awesome info. I’ve been drop shorting for northern smallies for years and lately haven’t done well but I just learned a bunch of stuff I thought I already knew. Thanks. Gonna crush them tomorrow. Keep these videos coming. They are the best on TH-cam for a serious tackle junkie.
solid video man!!! ive been drop shotting for about 2 years now here on the east coast on the potomac river. its something alot of guys dont do alot here but its deadly for dock and grass fishing. this video help step up my game!
Thanks for the info guys I like the videos the only thing I would like to see is maybe a budget option tossed in with your options on reels and rods. 199.99 to me for a reel is not realistic with kids and family. I usually stay around a 100 dollars for rods and reels and try to buy on sale as much as possible. I have a Daiwa Regal and I would say for 59.99 it’s a pretty solid reel it’s what I use all my spinning reel applications with and a med fast bass pro carbonlite rod. Is it the best no but it’s what I can afford. Drop shot is something I will be working on a lot coming up I like the videos keep up the good work. People who troll are dumb your giving your opinion just like they are except they are upset because it’s different from their opinion. Like you said it’s about taking a step in a different direction to make sure your doing it better then others so your catching more fish! Sorry about the long message I appreciate people taking the time for making videos like this.
I’ve caught a ton a fish on drop shot over the years. I’ve found that hook size and shape are much more important than line. Owner mosquito hook size 1 is my favorite for nose hooking. And it’s pretty weedless if you know the tricks. I’ve used mono and fluoro from 6lb to 12 lb with success. And I’m talking about fishing clear water lakes in CA for largemouth and smallmouth
I fish 100% mono 4 lb and 8 lb high quality line. I'm 74 years old a boat owner, been fishing bass all my life. I like the new technology but I keep it to the the new crank baits. They look as real as it gets. I also use all spinning reels for freshwater. Saltwater I fish Sabre and Penn Internationals. The best advise I can give for freshwater is slow down your retrieve.
Great video! Learned a bunch, just getting back in to fishing now that kids are gone and I have some free time. Can you recommend hook size for nose and weedless. Not sure how to choose. Also a few high end rod recommendations would be appreciated.
Hey man! 90% of the time, a size 1 or size 2 for nose hooks gets the job done! For weedless, a 1 or 1/0 light wire is usually the best all around size. For rods, the Megabass P5 Windbuster and G.Loomis NRX 852 S JWR are my favorite 2 models!

Great video " The Hook Up Tackle" Your video was very educational and enjoyable was one of if not the best fishing video out there keep up the great work THANK YOU! Brett J.
i actually like the VMC spinshot hooks. you tie you main line and weight line separately. that way if your weight gets hung up you don't lose every thing and you get zero line twist. my hookup/land ratio is really good too.

The small 3” Fin S fish, zoom tiny flukes and yum dingers catch tons of finicky fish up north in clear water. For folks on a budget the Trion reel has a smooth drag. $49
The last tip was especially good, I think I'm guilty of giving my bait a seizure sometimes. And, I agree 100% those Gamakatsu Dropshot Hooks are the worst, I've had so many fish come off on those, I wish I would of seen this video before I bought some.
Can tell MegaBass is a high - end type of store. I can LITERALLY feel it!. Lol. Not holding anything against you. Appreciate the no nonsense approach, refreshing. Have been subscribed, just now catching sight of the channel. Will definitely go back and catch up. Thanks.
Good advice but I'll call cap on the needing an expensive reel. My quantum accurist is only 100 and I feel the drag is great. And Penn fierce are even less and do great. But I get you got sell the 200 dollar plus reels.
I’m very surprised you didn’t mention how the Zoom tiny baby brush hog in watermelon red flake was the best drop shot bait in the world 🤔 other than that, great video!
Never lost a fish on the Gamagatsu dropshot hooks. I think most of fishing "tutorial" videos are people trying to sell you on a lure, hook, line, you name it. Oh, and I'm using cheap Pline and never had an issue. Maybe it's just the fisherman, not the gear. 👌
True but that’s your personal experience. Think objectively and understand his logic and it makes sense. But at the end of the day gear is a preference
Great informative video! Just got into drop shooting and after finding the proper depth, lost every fish I hooked. The reason? I was told to buy the gamakatsu hooks you just said we're garbage. Up until now I thought it was me. Just goes to show the guys, even at the top outdoor outfitter stores have no clue or just trying to get rid of stock that's not moving. Thanks for the info!
One thing that grinds my gears is the mindless regurgitation that “fluro is invisible”, because it’s not! Under water it looks exactly the same as monofilament line from 30 years ago. I have aquariums, I can see that.
I use mono and I also really do like copolymer from gamma, way stronger at much smaller diameter, less memory, more abrasion resistance than mono. But mono is cheaper, and still gets the job done, all leaders though, I don't like spooling the entire reel with mono or copolymer, hi vis braid, then 10 ish foot leader.
I got another mistake for ya: don't buy an $1,300 rod/reel combo if you can't afford it. A $250 combo will get you started with a good setup. All for nice gear for people who can afford it, but cater to the entire audience, please.
@@davidcrump2348I love watching vids and they’re (any creator) is saying “this is the best xxxx rod for xxxxx”…. Click the link, it’s like $500 for a rod. Shoot, it better be the best for that much money. 😂
I was the guy who just started fishing and using reviews, bought 3 expensive reels but not understanding why they were for the price. Now this makes sense and I should take a look at the drag settings
How many of y’all actually cast ur drop shot into thick cover? I heard him talking about it and I have never heard of anyone casting their drop shot into thick cover.
I wouldnt say thick cover but sometimes i throw a weedless dropshot with aaron martens straight shank dropshot hook and a tear drop weight, it falls thru stringy stuff almost perfectly but any thick slop it just gets stuck
There's alot of eel grass in the harbors and bays around here (salt water bass fishing) and a weedless presentation is pretty much the only way to present it or it'll snag that stuff like crazy, around moored boats and bridge/dock pilings as well.
If thick cover scares you, you need to sell your fishing gear and take up crochet. Bait fish live in and around thick cover. Bass ambush bait fish from in thick cover. If you are scared and not fishing it, you aren't catching many fish. After the hatch, it's the male bass' job to safeguard the fry from other predators. Would you care to guess where the adult males teach the fry to hide?
My lake in upstate NY has sheer cliffs and the trees on the side of them basically fall into 35 feet of water. Throw a ned rig in there and you get snagged on every branch. That's heavy cover to me, but yeah I don't throw it giant weed beds. LOL
Lost many fish on those so called drop shot rod, you do need a stiffer rod than that, but those “dropshot “ rods are great for crappie fishing tho, lol
Surprised you didn't mention swivels.... I fish the dropshot in SoCal VERY differently than most. It's not a finesse tactic at all for me, more of a power drop shot. 8-10lb powerpro super8 v2 braid to 12lb sunline sniper leader - 10lb if the bite is tough, Spro power swivel (smallest size), size 1 rebarb hook and a 6 or 7" roboworm. And here's the kicker, 1/2 oz weight 99% of the time, the rest of the time 3/8oz weight - never anything lighter. I'm fishing this anywhere from 5-50' of water and I am covering a LOT of water with it. Giving it a "seizure" as you might call it. Not so much like you showed it, more like one would hop/stroke a jig, specifically on a semi-slack line. Catches/lands tons of fish - probably because it's so very different a presentation than most guys are throwing.
Nothing wrong with a swivel if it’s working for you! It sounds like you have a specific way of fishing it that’s working for you, and that’s awesome!! I find most people use or try the swivel to avoid line twists. I find if I keep my knot straight and my worm straight I don’t have twist issues, so no need for the swivel. I’m glad you’re jacking them!!
I’ve been using a drop shot for the last three years and have yet to catch a fish. I use a steel leader, some hardware bolts for weight and a Hula Popper. I use a Zebco 808 with 80-lb braid duct taped onto a willow branch. Well, Mister Know-It-All, I will give your method a whirl, but if I’m successful don’t go getting all full of yourself. Seriously, highly informative. Sadly, I fell for the “drop shot hook” on the packaging and encountered problems exactly as you described. Excellent video. Thank you👍
Ok, I'll move away from the #2 gomakatsu drop shot hook on the 12# bass pro mono line on my 7ft mh baitcaster and will stop shaking the shit out of it. Thank you
That was very informative I’m in Nebraska and have been land locked stuck here since a injury 10 years ago when I just first started to get into the technique of DS in neighboring SD. Plans are to get back out there in 2021 and was looking for the best info. Thanks
I think most of these "tips" are subjective rather than objective. This video assumes fish are always predictable but any novice angler could tell you that is not thr case. There are some good points in this video like you should be using flourocarbon line but prrtty much everything else is a day-to-day exercise of finding out what the fish wants that day. Some days they are line shy and others not so much. Some days the fish want that bait worked like electricity is running through your body and on other days a near dead-stick approach works better. Some days size and color and shape will be your enemy and on other days it'll be combination of everything. I've dropshotted for a long time and the key thing I've learned is don't listen to people who say they know it best because they're most likely the ones who don't know too much. I've kept fish and what I've observed is that they are always both predictable and unpredictable; and thus, the best weapon ANY angler has is the ability to adapt and think outside the box to trigger any kind of response. Keep them lines tight.
I have no idea how this video became available to me for viewing. Your drop shot presentation was so “classroom”. You explained why and why not. I can’t buy a drop shot bite this year. With the changes that I will make from this video, I’m confident that I will regain drop shot success. Thank you for your valuable time to create this video.
I love how everyone just auto repeats that flouro is a requirement for finesse fishing. Also, please don't say it is abrasion resistant. Its not. Nylon mono is way more abrasion resistant (many times over twice as resistant to wear in controlled testing). Also, flouro is not invisible. It is less visible for its diameter, but it's clearly visible underwater. If you do a side by side comparison with same straight pull pound test, its crazy how similar they are. Actual diameter to straight pull strength is stronger in the mono so the apples to apples comparison of line visibilty should be done with a slightly thinner nylon line when compared to flouro. I have no idea why nylon lines understate their breakstrength on the box so much more than flouro lines. It is almost as if the companies make more from selling flouro and have marketed it in a way to make you think you must use it. The marketing has been so persuasive with the flouro lines everyone just believes it without actually testing it. Edit: Oh and dont even get me started on fluorocarbon "leader" specific spools. Biggest profit margin in fishing.
Agreed, i used flouro mostly. My current line needs changing from abrasions. I can feel it and see it if I look close enough. I think line is preference and case by case. I really dont notice the volume of bites when using, braid, mono or flouro unless I get in my head. Most of my fish have been on braid.
Nothing is required man. If you like the line you’re using, if you like mono - great! Knock yourself out. My goal in my job is to help people elevate their game. Fluoro is 100% better than mono for finesse fishing when the bite gets tough; and I’m not just “repeating” stuff, I’m sharing knowledge that I’ve spent a lifetime accumulating. There is not a mono on the planet that is as strong and that can get bit as much as a good fluorocarbon. And I’m not sure where on the inter webs you’re getting your fishing profit information, but monofilament is actually the highest profit margin in my store, so I’d love for you to keep buying it 👍.
@@thehookuptackle_usa Test the lines in a controlled environment. Measure their diameters, their abrasion resistance, the straight-line strength and their underwater visibility characteristics in different water clarities. It was educational for me, and it probably will be for you as well. You totally lost credibility to me when you said flouro has "lots of abrasion resistance". I think you've been reading the box too much. Soak some mono and some flouro for an hour or two in water and then put them under tension and run some sand paper over them.
@@ikashibimauler I don’t do silly tests, I actually fish. And when you actually fish, you see the difference very quickly. Your argument is like trying to convince me that 4 is larger than 8. It’s not. But if you want to believe 4 is larger - cool! Carry on 👍. I have lots of mono for sale!
great advice! i am a noob and just finished my first full year of fishing and you just confirmed all the things I was starting to notice. I started out with a ton of heavy tackle, wrong hooks and finished out with lighter line, the right hooks and fish landed. Can't wait to try the shank hook method!
I'm hearing you bro, iv done about a year myself and started off with thick lines and big hooks, was even using straight braid. Put on a mono leader and swapped out big hooks for light jigheads for soft baits and haven't looked back, very, very successful these days
The Gamakatsu Walleye wide gap hook works very well. I switched from the drop shot hook they make and up my catch ratios. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. 👊🏾
Dropshot rod lmaooo cmonnnn.. I hate the whole "one rod for one lure/style" kinda thing and the attitude it gives some people. Now having 2-4 combos all rigged with different things for a follow up cast and all that is one thing. But the guys who scoff at me for "not using the right style rod and reel" for whatever i'm throwing is a little much IMO. Just go fishing, god damn lol. But hey if thats peoples thing then have fun! Just don't tell me I won't be successful if i'm throwing a spinner bait on my 6 foot medium/fast spinning setup. It's happened before and it was a total eye-roll moment lmao. Not targeting anyone specific by the way i'm just talking in general. People get a little nuts-o about it all. Thats when i bust out my little ugly stik dock runner and finess with it lmao
No scoffing at anyone here; just trying to help people refine their craft. You don’t “need” a specific Dropshot rod to Dropshot, but if you want to fine tune your Dropshot fishing for maximum performance, having the correct rod helps. Same for all techniques.
I wouldn't drop shot with a med heavy so yeah I kinda need a med light so the rod does the work and doesn't break the hook out. Fine tuning gear is how you land more fish. It's October and with 8 Combos alone I've landed over 500 bass not including anything saltwater related.
@@bassinbilliards6279 Obviously rod specs come into play in some situations. Like I use my med-light spinning setup to throw weightless plastics. No way i'm doing that on my med-hvy casting setup. But alot of the time i'll walk to a spot with my 6' med spinning setup and throw everything with no problems. This comment is mostly about the rods saying "drop shot" or "jerk bait" just labeling in general. Making people think they gotta buy shit they dont need lol
Seriously. Ive NEVER lost a bite on the split/drop hook from Gamakatsu. Ever. He lost me as soon as he said that was the worst hook to use. I couldn’t even finish the video after hearing that. Someone might actually believe him and not use that hook. Thats a shame.
@@mannyflores4507 If that hook is working for you, then awesome! Keep this video in mind if it ever fails you and you'll have the good alternatives. This is 20 years of experience in helping people who lose fish that went into what I said. The rest of the world can celebrate better hook up ratios with my alternatives 👍.
That was excellent. Very informative, excellent pace, to the point, very user friendly explanation for people newer to drop shotting. Thank u for the video
Thank you, thank you, thank you! The most thorough explanation of the drop shot technique. I’ve tried the drop shot this past year and done ok but it’s good to hear all the things I’ve been doing that i need to fix. I appreciate the info. Thanks again.
Wish your shop was where I live. Thanks for the informative lesson. I learned pretty much everything I was doing was incorrect. Looked good from a distance, but my line, hook, rod and reel setup was wrong. I appreciate your knowledge and passing it on.
Great info. I have found that varying sizes of finishing nails make better sinkers. They are longer and track better across the bottom with less snags. Not super fast to sink, but works well, and much cheaper than fancy drop shot lead.
After a lot of trial and error I figured out my nearby river responded to drop shoting.i got tons of bites but never got them out of the water. Like you said that round hook was killing me. So I went to my local tackle shop and they had four of the owner cover shot hook packs. I got them all. I am not kidding when I say I dropped the line and I had an instant fish. He was a dink but damn I've been trying everything for a good long while. Thank you for helping me out! Great great straight forward and no B's help. I appreciate it .
Damn bro what great video!!! You need do more of these. I fish alit torneys and consider myself above average angler. I maybe not learned something new, but diffently made me rethink a few things.
Utterly fantastic drop shot video! I needed this! Thank You. Now if I could only tie on my own flouro leader to my braid main line, difficult for this newby, LOL.
Since you made this video, Daiwa came out with the Daiwa Procyon MQ LT spinning reel with the very cool Advanced Tournament Drag (ATD). "Instantly adds drag resistance when you set the hook, and when the fish starts pulling, the drag curve automatically returns to your prescribed setting" which your EXIST reel has also, but Procyon is only USD$180 instead of USD$860. I have it, great reel.

Man im glad I found this channel! Your a boss behind the camera. Enough said
Can tell MegaBass is a high - end type of store. I can LITERALLY feel it!. Lol. Not holding anything against you. Appreciate the no nonsense approach, refreshing. Have been subscribed, just now catching sight of the channel. Will definitely go back and catch up. Thanks.
Mega bass is a lure brand.
The number 1 video I seen in fishing advertising in years 🤠. The older Michigan Fisherman
Good advice but I'll call cap on the needing an expensive reel. My quantum accurist is only 100 and I feel the drag is great. And Penn fierce are even less and do great. But I get you got sell the 200 dollar plus reels.
Was thinking the same thing. My lews reals are smooth even my shimano sienna 2500re that I use for trout is super smooth
I'm enjoying this channel because it's just teaching and being honest.
I drop shot for perch and pike in England and I normally use 5 or 6lbs and it works for me
Cheers my friend! Thank you for watching 🍻
@ John Burrows I always wanted to fish in Europe, it seems like you guys are always killing big perch over there
Great video you are very knowledgeable. “Seizure in the water” hilarious 😂👍
I’m very surprised you didn’t mention how the Zoom tiny baby brush hog in watermelon red flake was the best drop shot bait in the world 🤔 other than that, great video!
Seeing how this is biggest mistakes people make in dropshot fishing, I should have definitely mentioned you and the tiny baby brush hog...
I use that aswell but it doesnt have to be that specific in color
@@derekwilliams6403 don’t encourage him Derek!
Enjoyed the refresher on drop shotting. I needed to hear the segments on the choice of hooks and line selection. Thanks.
I thought the same thing when he talked about spending 200$-500$ on a spinning reel for bass fishing 😂
@@charliereis ive seen people fishing with coke bottle and the cheapest mono line just fine. You dont even need to spend $10 for a reel.
I couldn’t agree more.
True but that’s your personal experience. Think objectively and understand his logic and it makes sense. But at the end of the day gear is a preference
Agree
Very informative, best drop shot vid I've seen. I've been known to give my baits seizures at times, but not anymore!
Thanks for the info!
i have never lost a fish on the Gamakatsu 1/0 drop shot hook
He's selling!!!
Never lost one too
Yup I have been using that hook for a while and have had no problems
Same here.
Same here. That hook is fine.
Great video, thanks, greetings from Sofia, Bulgaria. I am new to drop shotting and will certainly take all the advice into consideration.
Fluoro's only TRUE advantage is density. It has a better sink rate and helps keep things down. Other than that, its pretty much all marketing.
Aquarium and inside lake or rover are really have big different
I got another mistake for ya: don't buy an $1,300 rod/reel combo if you can't afford it. A $250 combo will get you started with a good setup. All for nice gear for people who can afford it, but cater to the entire audience, please.
Everyone don’t have $250.00 for a good combo either.
@@davidcrump2348for real
@@davidcrump2348Ikr, $250 is a NICE combo.

I was the guy who just started fishing and using reviews, bought 3 expensive reels but not understanding why they were for the price. Now this makes sense and I should take a look at the drag settings
Guys... thank you! Serious 🔥🔥🔥
Thank you for watching!
Funny. Honest. Helpful. Genius. Great content. Thank you
How many of y’all actually cast ur drop shot into thick cover?
LOL
I do
Very informative! Thank you! I haven’t fished drop shot before so I want to give it a try.
Lost many fish on those so called drop shot rod, you do need a stiffer rod than that, but those “dropshot “ rods are great for crappie fishing tho, lol
Depends on the brand. The St. Croix LTB ds rod is a true ds rod. Not a whippy soft ds rod.
Thanks buddy…the hooks I’ve been using are literally the Worst hooks in your opinion and I now agree 😂
Great info
Thank you sir!
I’m glad you’re jacking them!!
bro everybody calls me stupid for makeing my drop shot bait have a “seizure” but i do it 99% of the time
@@andrewrafferty1670 Seizure lol that's a good way to put it.
Thank you
🤣👊
Lol...
This got me more fish this year than I can express. Thank you. I watched all dropshot videos......this one is #1, no questions about it.
The bait seizure is the mistake I see the most
😂🤣😂Had me crying!!!!
Thank you so much for watching and for your kind feedback! 👊. I hope you jack then next time out!
@@rhino5419 Fluoro does sink, and mono does float. That’s not just a saying. It’s science.
And don’t forget the night crawlers. When they don’t want any artificial baits it usually saves the day. 😊
Ive taught my kids, " worm is king" . Worm never lets me down.
The Gamakatsu Walleye wide gap hook works very well. I switched from the drop shot hook they make and up my catch ratios.

At the end of all this guys, their is no rules to fishing. Just go out and have fun. Don’t need to spend hundreds.
Yeah, I’ve seen people tearing it up with knowledge + cane poles on freakin jetties.
Great video! Im wanting to try this on my WI trip. Now i have some good pointers.
We’ll be sure to stay off your lawn too.
What would we do without dentists and lawyers?! Thousand dollar blue gill specific spinning rod right around the corner. LOL
Fantastic information and presentation! Cant wait to give this a go this weekend

@@joekuhl3500 False. If you ever lost a big one on one of them, it was user error, not the hook. Trust that.

Wish your shop was where I live. Thanks for the informative lesson. I learned pretty much everything I was doing was incorrect. Looked good from a distance, but my line, hook, rod and reel setup was wrong. I appreciate your knowledge and passing it on.
Curious, would you use the same rod for ned rig fishing as you would for dropshotting, and where would there differences lie?
Great info. I have found that varying sizes of finishing nails make better sinkers. They are longer and track better across the bottom with less snags. Not super fast to sink, but works well, and much cheaper than fancy drop shot lead.
