Great southern rock band from the 60's-80's. It is very sad what happened to this band in losing so many members in a plane crash in 1977. My favorite songs are "Simple Man", "Free Bird" & "Sweet Home Alabama". They had lots of great songs such as "Call Me The Breeze", "Tuesday's Gone", "That Smell", "The Ballad Of Curtis Loew", "What's Your Name", "Saturday Night Special", "Gimme Three Steps" etc.
@dagmar - well, for me it is The ballad of curtis loew, Simple Man and Free bird, the other stuff is still excellent, but these 3 are EXCEPTIONAL. One of the greatest bands of the 70ties. If they hadn´t crashed, they could have been as big as ACDC. But they WERE big and great. Superb band with excellent talent.
The guitar player Steve , (28 ) in red pants, his sister Casey (29), is behind him singing backup. It looks like her in the middle. Lost both in them plane crash with Ronnie (lead singer 29), road manager and 2 pilots only a few months after this show. 20 others survived. Reportedy, the only one to walk out with minor injuries was the drummer, others were seriously injured. Lynyrd Skynyrd is the band name, Ronnie is the person.
Artimus Pyle the drummer was shot in the shoulder, or arm I'm not sure, by a landowner who thought he was a tresspasser while seeking help. Thankfully the farmer help them out!
@@JimiKoolThat is not close to being true. I have heard the landowner's wife tell the story of what actually happened. With the helicopters flying around with spotlights on, they assumed that they were looking for an escaped convict from a nearby prison. When Pyle was approaching the house, The landowner fired his gun into the air. He wasn't hit or even close to being hit. She and others who were witness actually made fun of him for the story and said he made it up
Oct 20th 1977 was when we lost Ronnie Van Zandt Steve Gaines and his sister Cassie Gaines along with their road manager and the 2 pilots I saw this tour in Philadelphia just before going in the service I saw them twice before the crash and 10 times after, a very sad day for music and still their music lives on
Skynyrd is hands-down my favorite band, followed closely by ZZ Top and Pink Floyd. It was on this day (Oct 20th) in 1977 that their plane went down killing Steve Gaines, his sister back-up singer Cassie Gaines, road manage Dean Kilpatrick, and lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, plus the two pilots. Just remembering that day still hurts. The girls singing back-up are the Honkettes, Cassie, Leslie Hawkings, and JoJo Billingsly. Other than the drummer, Artimus Pyle, they are all gone now after the passing of Gary Rossington. He's still rockin' with his own band that plays many of LS songs as a tribute to his brothers. Godspeed and fly high, Freebirds.
I love how you are sharing these bands with Lulu, she seems to really love them, as many of us still do, you gals are so fun to watch, keep up the good work. Love from Kansas
Amen, ladies. Ya never ever underestimate any member of Skynyrd, and especially the ladies! In the studio they were strong but they always proved just how strong they really were live! Yes! Great observation. Also….none of us native to GA or another Southern state took exception to the song. We always embraced and cheered it. Not just because it’s a good song, but because it does speak to a lot of us. I’m guessing a lot of Southerners may feel or see it (I cannot speak for everyone of course), the song may as well be saying “Sweet Home (anywhere in the South)…so…we ALL get it and feel it. ❤️🙂
I remember when the plane crashed as if it happened yesterday! I heard about it the next morning. I was in High School and got off the bus and went into the school. Everyone was crying!!!! Girls Boys everyone!!! I continued to the hangout spot where my friends and I would gather before class and asked what happened. When they told me I remember the tears just came out!!! Hard to hold them back after hearing that news!!! And everyone around was crying so that didn't make it easy to hold the tears back either!!! Years later when Johnny took over for his brother I made it a point to go see them! I remember Ronnie's hat on the mic for Freebird! Yeah, maybe a little teary-eyed for that too!!! I was lucky enough to see them four times! Everytime as much fun as the last!!! They were so amazing!!!
Being a huge music geek and a huge movie geek, everytime i hear this song,i picture the movie Con Air in my head. Yes i know,im weird like that. One of the characters (no wait!),its actually 2 characters in that movie that seems to have a relationship to that song, without spoiling it too much (in case someone hasnt seen it). 4:16 Backing singers are telling Kathy to not push that pause button......just yet Heard about the joke with some guys criticizing rock bands having too long guitar solos, and this was all overheard by Lynyrd Skynyrd that said: Hold our beers! (I know,my humor is dry today, but i feel like noone beats Lynyrd Skynyrd`s guitar solos in length)
Same concert as your other video for Freebird. Here you can see the 3 lead guitar parts :) Also on the top 25 most recognized opening guitar riffs, this was #3
I'm Dona's age ... and remember all the major Skynyrd tunes. I also remember that plane crash like it was last week. (It happened not too far from my home). My best friend's Dad was one of the first Doctors at the crash site. That's not a fun story at all. But on a happier note ... I also love that old can of Bud on the piano.
You get to see some extra guitar solos in this rendition and that was the first time I'd ever seen em do that. Steve Gaines was towards the last but actually second to the last and him on that srrat was and still is some of the best guitarist I've ever heard in my life and believe me I've listened to a lot . And the background singers was called The Honkettes .
I got to see Skynyrd in Memphis @ the bicentennial concert. The Outlaws, Blue Oyster Cult, Lynyrd Skynyrd and ZZ Top in that order. Skynyrd is the best live band I ever saw.
Ladies, I've seen a few of your videos! Love your reviews! So today you get the subscribe button! Hope it helps!!! Looking forward to more of your videos!!!
Was a few months ago I went to Ronnie's originally graveside in Jax he was moved to another location but Steve Gaines is still there it was humbling experience just thinking of the greatness that died on that plane 😢 💔
They played this song and then Free Bird to close their gig that day. The Honkettes are the girls. Leslie,Cassie, and JoJo. I don't believe the girls were on the stage for Free Bird. Thank ya'll for the reaction.
Ronnie didnt need to jump around and stuff...he had a presence about him....and the band around him....damn good stuff...i am 55 now and they been my favorite band since i was 6 yrs old!!
Hi, you ladies from the South, you sound like it? If so, check out Blackberry Smoke, notably Man of Constant Sorrow. Love your enthusiasm and close bond.
They edited this for whatever reason cause when Ronnie Van Zant says "Theres one thing i wanna tell you" they erased the rest where he said "theres good people in Alabama"
4 walls of riford. That's a good song there running. In the date from 30 eight, Jeff Carlos got the dough. Bro running singing nancy at four walls a rayford
AND THE SADDEST PART WAS THAT THE TRAGIC PLANE CRASH HAPPENED JUST SHORTLY AFTER THIS 77 CONCERT! 😮☹ R.I.P.☹TO ( RONNIE VAN ZANDT ) AND THE OTHERS FROM HIS BAND! TRULYYYY HORRIFFIC YOU GALS!☹
Can you imagine Lynyrd Skynyrd in California now and with a big old confederate battle flag?, would never happen in this day and age which is so unfortunate.😢
When are you gonna react to "WEREWOLVES OF LONDON" By Warren Zevron as well as "ALL SUMMER LONG" By KID ROCK?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? cause if you listen to the music closely it's the same music set to SWEET HOME ALABAMA.
Singing the praises of that staunch segregationist & Jim Crow law supporter, former Alabama govenor & several time POTUS candidate, the late George Wallace.
The girl in the long tan skirt was Cassie Gaines her brother, Steve in the long sleeve t shirt and red pants playing the Fender Stratocaster and the lead singer, Ronnie Van Zant would die in a plane crash shortly after this performance!
The beautiful irony of this performance is that Ronnie Van Zandt is wearing a Neil Young T-Shirt what a Southern Gentleman

Yes Cassie is in the middle of the Honkettes
Artimus Pyle the drummer was shot in the shoulder, or arm I'm not sure, by a landowner who thought he was a tresspasser while seeking help. Thankfully the farmer help them out!
Ronnie was the COOLEST frontman ever. For me a solid nr3. After Freddie (nobody beats him) and Bon Scott.

With the passing of Gary Rossington, the band is back together. RIP Skynyrd. Your music will last to the end of time.
Love your enthusiasm.
Thanks
This was the singer's and band that was on the records in the 1970s an recording in Muscle Shoals Alabama area

If Im not mistaken, this is one of the last shows they did before the plane crash.

Maybe the Greatest "Day on the Green" show EVER at Oakland-Alameda County Stadium......
Lynyrd Skynyrd is one of my favorite southern rock bands of all time. So sad that all of the original members are gone. RIP🙏 take care y'all
Love me some southern rock!!
Steve Gaines kicks ass on that solo! So damn good...takes me back to high school!

Lol
The day that plane went down was the day true American music died. There has never been another band like them.
I remember it vividly!!!
Skynyrd is my 2nd favorite band , behind the Allman Brothers Band , Duane was the man , when it came to playing guitar.
Love all the head bobbing to the music.
Same concert as your other video for Freebird. Here you can see the 3 lead guitar parts :) Also on the top 25 most recognized opening guitar riffs, this was #3
God Bless Lynyrd Skynyrd
Lulu, baby girl...this concert took place in 1977,the summer time!! ❤
6:20/Lulu, baby girl...I was at this lInerd Skinner concert in the early 1970's & I wasn't even 8 years old yet!!

Thanks for subbing!
One thing that is amazing about Ronnie is he never wrote down his lyrics. Totally amazing how he just wrote from his mind and then remembered it.
I love this song. My mom was from Alabama.
Me too. It's one of the greatest songs ever written.
The Professor if Rock did a video that goes in to the deep history of "Sweet Home Alabama" 😎
Was a few months ago I went to Ronnie's originally graveside in Jax he was moved to another location but Steve Gaines is still there it was humbling experience just thinking of the greatness that died on that plane 😢 💔
good way to have a familie moment so I hope you all enjoy doing this
That was their last concert R.I.P boys
This was filmed just shortly before the fateful plane crash that killed some and injured many of them.
I thought back in the day Skynyrd was from Alabama later found out that there from Jacksonville Florida. Fly on free bird. Skynyrd nation forever
They played this song and then Free Bird to close their gig that day. The Honkettes are the girls. Leslie,Cassie, and JoJo. I don't believe the girls were on the stage for Free Bird. Thank ya'll for the reaction.
Thanks for watching
The background singers are in the original studio version. Listen to it again.
It's a dang shame that there are no original members left. Gary rossington was the last one to pass away.r.i.p.🙏
Ronnie didnt need to jump around and stuff...he had a presence about him....and the band around him....damn good stuff...i am 55 now and they been my favorite band since i was 6 yrs old!!
