No,I've never recorded on an official Slave album.I recorded with them in 1977 through 1979 at the house of music in NJ.Some of the tracks I recorded was used on Aurra's 1rst album. Mark Adams and I along with Slave members are on that album.I'm only on Aurra's 1rst album.I'm also a member of Young & Company and Steve Arrington's Hall Of Fame.I'm also included on a bunch of Slave compulation Cds released by Atlantic Records.Don't stop the Funk!Buddy Hankerson

Fender was king then-still is in my opinion; now only if they would have the vision to go forward like some of the other bass makers and make a 6-string Jazz and/or Precision-passive pickups, like the original also... 12-8-23.

what a classic,this guy was one of my bass heroes when i was in my teens,and still sounding good after all these years.
Bass is 10% technique and 90% groove and feel.
True that, although *some* bassists tend to lean more heavily on technique, particularly sight-readers.
This video, though, is pure heart, causing spontaneous rhythmic body movements in the listener ;-)
Funk is generally that, might be different in other genres
Buddy is really the master of Bass Funk... Just look at the way he plays, so natural.

I remember sitting down for about an hour with the intent of getting the lick @ :40 ... i got the notes... but after listening to myself, decided maybe only Buddy should play those notes, in that order (and graciously put my bass down).

This is how it used to be with some of the baddest bass players back in the day, when funk was king, before the music industry destroyed the funk movement, and Buddy Hankerson was definitely one of those bad cats!
I mean the new cats got chops up the a__ today-but they don't know how to bring it like this cat and so many others did back then!
The best I can put it is that it was a different "spirit" and music, that motivated and inspired the playing-not like the musicians of today... 12-8-23.
My type of bass player-good solid groove playing-came from my favorite Group, Slave(out of whom came Steve Arrington's Hall Of Fame), along with Mark Adams(my favorite bass player along with Louis Johnson). This is how you "bring it" folks... 12-8-23.

Damn thats funky, to many bass players focus to much on technique rather focus feeling and flow of the groove.
Almost every bassist these days tries to make some super technical and complex slap solo at 945bpm. Just sounds bad, though, in most cases.

I have a pre-EB Stingray and a 2012 SR5HS. I don't know that MM would be "better" but would certainly agree that'd it'd be "worth hearing"
As impressive as that was the most impressive thing he did is use those double stops to suggest the full funk chord.
Man I can only improv in short 4-measure phrases before having to "reset" and "catch the groove back." But you just keep the groove and funk going! INCREDIBLE!

This video is from 1984 we were just getting out of high school. He is one of the coolest cats in the universe he might not remember but I had a bass that belonged to him for almost a year and that’s how I was able to dig in to music. I owe Buddy but I’m sure he wouldn't look at it that way.
