30 Amazing slap funk Bass lines

  • Mark King was a huge influence on me as a teenager starting out on the bass. I must have spent weeks/months in my bedroom practicing and trying to figure out what he played. Here are 30 of his classic bass lines that I’ve pieced together to make a 15 minute Slap/Funk Bass Odyssey. I start out at 122 bpm and speed up to 131 bpm about half way through. I think I’ve got most of it right? Maximum respect to Mark King, a true Legend, and of course the other members of Level 42. These guys were the soundtrack of My youth.

      Right back at you, sir! Do you happen to know how can I find more of this kind of sound? I tried Level 42 but the other instruments and singing just distract me from the bass IMHO.

    1986-1989, Poland, The Berlin Wall still there, a small casette recorder , bass guitar and hours of playing along, no tabs, no sheet music available, and I succeded! Thank God I had completed my music scholl education as a violinist, that wa a great help. We started our gigs with a live reprise of "Almost There" from the Wembley Live, then we played "Kansas City Milkman", "Eyes Waterfalling", "Lessons in Love"and lots more. I sang as well so I became a local Mark King. At that time in a small town in Poland we were Funk Rock Gods! Many thanks for bringing it back in this clip and many thanks for that great Tribute To Mark King and Level 42, one of the best funk masters in the world!

      backslash68 That's exactly what I was thinking!!
      It's so easy to sit back and sort of take it for granted what a singer/performer is doing, until you see it all broken down into its separate parts like this. Just imagine, Mark King is doing all that guitar work and having to concentrate on singing the words to the song too. Amazing, just amazing!

    • @MatsEvensen
      @MatsEvensen 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes people forget that so easily how many rythms there are in those slap bass riffs and that he use the bass as the leadinstrument. I only can sing and play the bass at the same time on Running in the Family, Hot water, and a couple of others and yes that have taked my certainly some years to understand, not before 2015 i started to find my own way to sing at the same time as i played, so i had to play the bassriffs without thinking of it and sing over it and that's damn hard cause he uses so many rythms on the bass and for then singing with a totally another flow in the same 4/4 rythm, it's hard very hard at the same time, so that is what i use most of my practising at the time among other things, to learn to sing to these advansed tuned at the same time while i playing the bass.

      to unreachable victor wooten ? but i dont compare its different music and technique, i like more mark king. i sense marcus miller is easy level, when hearing this, i like this video cause it show more bass art than whole band original. it is also amazing to hear feeling of lousie johnson and larry graham. mark learned also from them.. and took the game on higher level with much more fiilling ideas and harmonies. it is also jazzy but stays in a precise groove, it is technically top but thinking about the main melody. King is king. ans secial thanks to this guy, amazing, great job and idea to put this essential medley together.

    sometimes you don't realise just how prolific and talented Level 42 are..... amazing tunes reproduced with superb flair.... well done man. Childhood remains flawless! .... just one thing....I used to play the "The machine stops" from the "Accidents" album at 45 rpm ...while running all over the room playing air bass...then I defected and learned the keyboard!

      @@domenicomorselli That's a really good question..!
      Tag your videos with everything even remotely similar to your subject and try to target a world-wide audience. Cover bass versions of emerging popular songs or older popular songs maybe? Be active in as many social media platforms as you can and gently guide people back to your TH-cam channel. Post a video at least once a week. And if you reply to someone with a link to your own video, provide some context. And don't spam.

    My tutor when I started playing bass was (still is!) a huge Mark King fan and I ended up learning a ton of Level 42 stuff, these days I tend to play simpler stuff out of preference but it was a fantastic groundwork to learn how to play the instrument on.

    I tried all this like Mark King, but it was not possible. You made it nearly better than he did. Nice MM bass sound by the way.
