He makes it look easy. I like the way he teaches without any kind of arrogance. He just loves playing. It's like he doesn't even realise how great he is, and he believes anyone can do what he does! LEGEND!!!!
This is so goes beyond the ultimate funk bass lesson - this is a lesson on how to live your life! You hit on the ONE.... then everything you feel can fit into that little space you got. Ahh... love him.
This piece of information that is being relayed here to aspiring musicians that play bass guitar... or in my case bass keyboards... is a simple, accurate and honest fact. Keeping it on the One !!! The mathematics is very rudimentary... in fact most musicians .. especially funk musicians.. that do not adhere to this rule... are lost.. usually out of the pocket and do not create enough space. If you study what Bootsy is telling you here with all your heart, you will be a great musician. db
Such a simple riff... obviously the backbone of funk. Too many people overcomplicate things... such a legend, and what he showed here is epic because of the simplistic perfection. I don't claim to be any expert at funk, but I know good funk when I hear it.
This is the best music lesson I have every watched. So simple yet so so right. Hit on the one then fit what you can inbetween, then hit on the one. IF you follow that you will rock...No wonder Buckethed is so awesome.
There is only one godfather of funk, and that is (was) James Brown, but guess who taught Bootsy the recipe? And Bootsy certainly developed the concept and took it further. It is a great clip. He so obviously enjoys it himself.
Bootsy is awesome. He Played with James Brown and Parliment /Funkadelic. Saw him Live (Bootsy's Rubber Band in the 70's) He influenced My funk style long ago. (Hey Bootsy! Are You a star?) "Twinkle twinkle Baby." Best Quote by anybody ever!!!!!
1.... uh... an then you wanna break it down. Break down. 1.... 3 4, you know, and now you know, you gotcher basic funk formula there, you know? you can do anythang you wanna do wid it, you know? do wid it, you know? do wid it you know do wid it you know do wid it
@EddieLandsberg Yeah what is the deal with that? So many poser funkers who really don't understand it. Isn't it amazing to hear how staccato he gets those notes? Damn it is short.
1.... uh, and then you wanna break it down break down, 1.. 3 4 you know and now you know, you got your basic funk formula there, ya know, you can do anythang you wanna do wid it, you know?
@n2brideau I second that. I use this formula all the time on guitar, sometimes without realizing it. He really does summarize funk bass/guitar in the simplest terms possible, however someone who is just beginning to play bass would probably be totally lost after this.
He makes it look easy. I like the way he teaches without any kind of arrogance. He just loves playing. It's like he doesn't even realise how great he is, and he believes anyone can do what he does! LEGEND!!!!
Bootsy, Baby!
He was probably high as a kite but as clear as windexed windows.
it's like that guy is rapping, playing bass, explaining the funk, and messing around at the same time...
amazing
This is so goes beyond the ultimate funk bass lesson - this is a lesson on how to live your life! You hit on the ONE.... then everything you feel can fit into that little space you got. Ahh... love him.
An absolute go-to for anyone wanting to learn the bass, drums or funk.
this is more meaningful than 98% of the bullshit i learned during my short time in music school. that's for damn sure.
man... he's like a bass hendrix
i just love the syncopated "UH" the he continues repeating while playing
Bootsy taught me how to play bass in this 1:21 minute long video
ITS BOOTSY BABY!
Ear splitting grin, sunglasses, suit that's louder than the amp.
Yeah, Bootsy's trippin'.
Ol Bootsy said "ya'know" 13 times even ya'know was said funky
I love how he has that massive grin on his face the whole time.
This is *exactly* why TH-cam exists. Bootsy rules!

Never thought of it that way when playing. Simple and a great formula.
Also gotta add that this is probably the simplest, most straight forward and best explanation of funk I've ever seen!
Such a simple riff... obviously the backbone of funk. Too many people overcomplicate things... such a legend, and what he showed here is epic because of the simplistic perfection. I don't claim to be any expert at funk, but I know good funk when I hear it.
Yeah I know, you know? ;D
Y'know?
One is definitely NOT the loneliest number in the realm of FUNK.
when Bootsy Collins cut his finger he bleeds the funk, yes sir!
That is kick ass - funny how the greatest of musicians seem to express patience and support for those who aspire to learn.
The Man. The Myth. The Legend. Bootsy Collins, ladies and gentlemen!
I have the formula. Thanks to Professor Bootsy.
I read an interview where he said he learned "on the one" from playing in the James Brown Band, and JB would always yell "keep it on the one!"
If i had 1% of the funk you have, i would be the funkiest person in the UK! Amazing Bass Player you are, Songbay :)
This is the best music lesson I have every watched. So simple yet so so right. Hit on the one then fit what you can inbetween, then hit on the one. IF you follow that you will rock...No wonder Buckethed is so awesome.
Man I remember when this video had like 100,000 views.. Now look like at it.
Dude, Bootsy is snapping fingers on 2 and 4...
thats is one funky bass!
that little space that you got! :-)
I once took lessons from a retired pro bass player, he said Bootsy is one of the craziest bass players that ever lived.
This guy is the BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Original funk bass. Not a thumb slap in sight. Finger funk. Thumbs and snaps are great, too, but get your basics down first.
EVERYTHING is on The One.
Damn that should be on a album 22-36. Thats hott
he learnt that from James....."its all on the 1 baby!!"
yes way! i would vote for that!
There is only one godfather of funk, and that is (was) James Brown, but guess who taught Bootsy the recipe? And Bootsy certainly developed the concept and took it further.
It is a great clip. He so obviously enjoys it himself.
you know...you know you know...you know you know...you know you know...you know
I COME BACK TO THIS VIDEO OFTEN JUST TO HEAR HOW BOOTSY MAKES IT SOUND SO SIMPLE...
49 people don´t know.
Wicked! Bootsy's got the truth.
Thanks Bootsy!
He's so funky
you know and thats the funk
Bootsy, if you're out there reading this, RESPECT! That was so cool
Bootsy is awesome. He Played with James Brown and Parliment /Funkadelic. Saw him Live (Bootsy's Rubber Band in the 70's) He influenced My funk style long ago.
(Hey Bootsy! Are You a star?) "Twinkle twinkle Baby." Best Quote by anybody ever!!!!!
he's too damn happy :)
if I hear one more person ask about some f/n tabs I'm gonna just throw up :-)
Thanks Bootsy.
Great video. And now I know what hit it on the one means.
Slammin.
do with it, ya know!?!
The basics are key. Right on Bootsy!
hes gotta be the coolest person to ever live
It's SO COOL the way he can EXPLAIN it with such ease and clarity
Yes! I have waited 24 years to see this again and searched for it for many many years. Thanks for posting this. And thank you Bootsy!
You know.
1.03
duwidit yunah, duwidit yunah, duwidit yunah, duwidit yunah... *infinity*
Best clip ever!:) Bootsy is the man, period!
bootsy the genius
I know
I love this man :)
He learned that from a funky ball covered in teats from outer space
The best Bassist that I ever heard....imagine him and Jimmi together!
i like the feeling he got da funk feelin Ya Know ha
Ha! This must have come from outer space. It's too simple. Too powerful.
Wow, that's actually really good advice, lol.
Not just his funk formula but his life formula period. "It's all on the one, baby"
A natural. Props!!!
now i know what they mean when they say "on the one!'
even that was just so damn funky.
I watch this video everytime I need to remember how to feel funk. Funkatastic!
"Jammin' on the one!" - Theo Huxtable
Good video.
It's the way he hits the one. It just sounds so funky.
This guy just seems so nice..Everytime I have seen him on TV or internet he always has a smile and a good attitude...
It's true! You can make the grooviest line with just a few notes. Music is in your heart, not in how many notes do you play.
this groove is unbelivable! i could listen to this all day.
@CaptainSugarFoot Either that or they disliked the fact that he hasnt mentioned that JB invented the "one"
Not sure if hands are huge or neck is tiny...
62 people tap the funk on 2 and 4...
Bootsy is one of my musical heros.
and thats the funk
So much rhythm, groove, timing, feel and FUNK!! should be against the law. He sounds better than I do just giving a 30 second demo.
I wish every thing about music was this easy
yes bootsy I know xD! god this man is great!
EVERYBODY ON THE ONE!!!
1.... uh... an then you wanna break it down. Break down. 1.... 3 4, you know, and now you know, you gotcher basic funk formula there, you know? you can do anythang you wanna do wid it, you know? do wid it, you know? do wid it you know do wid it you know do wid it
Yah know?
If only I was told this at the beginning.
@EddieLandsberg You ain't funkin' if you ain't on the ONE. Everything is on the ONE. And who learns funk in college? lol
@elfmotat It's your basic funk formula
still funkiest ever. I can duplicate the notes he plays but the feel he has comes from the other side. it can't be duplicated
That's the funk! Y'know?
People always give me shit for saying ": Ya know". Well fuck them, if it's good enough for Bootsy, it's good enough for me.
That was really cool! I'm a piano player but will eventually add bass to the resume. Thanks, Bootsy!
Wheres the bootsy monument? It should be next to the washington monument and approxamatly six inches higher.
@n2brideau I second that. I use this formula all the time on guitar, sometimes without realizing it.
He really does summarize funk bass/guitar in the simplest terms possible, however someone who is just beginning to play bass would probably be totally lost after this.
