Spatial anomaly. The tower's length gets infinitely compressed towards the center of the tower. If you were to try to climb up, you would never reach the top if you had infinite time to attempt it. The top makes just as much sense as having a bottom to begin with.
Technically not on top, but above the top. Which does nothing to help the problem.
Not only that but you can also see Sigil from anywhere in the infinitely large Outlands at the bottom of the spire. Even from the edge.

I love the factions of Sigil so much. Despite being so "twisted", almost all the philosophies make a certain manner of sense to me. They don't feel as "cartoony" or "obvious plot device"-type as factions in typical rpg settings. I still have a soft spot for Dustmen because of Planescape Torment.
Would actually love more planescape content, such a rich field to explore

I love how each plane in the Outlands represents each part of the Character Alinement (Lawful, Chaotic, Good, Evil), and Sigil is in the center, representing True Netural.
Might want to count the number of Outer Planes and then, the number of alignments....
For example:
Gehenna- NE, Baator-LE, The Abyss-CE...... Gray Wastes-NEN, Canceri-LEN, Pandemonium-CEN...Acheron-LNE...Bytopia-CGN (etc) Many Outer Planes are aligned with two ethics and a morality instead of the standard one ethic/morality.

I'm a fan of both the SCP universe and DnD so it saddens me that the DnD ones don't seem to do as well as the SCP ones on your channel. But please still keep doing these, there are few others who can do DnD lore quite as immersive as you can!

One form of punishment you forgot to mention with the Lady of Pain: Being put in her shadow. If her shadow engulfs you, you experience a horrendously, unimaginably horrific and painful death by flaying, with the experience of ten thousand blades dicing you to nothing. Of course, this can happen even not as a punishment, if someone makes the mistake of even just walking into the shadow without knowing its danger.
Let alone from a Meta perspective. The Lady is deliberately left un-statted. Because she is arguably the most powerful being in all of D&D and it's myriad settings.
@@McDonaldWilliamT Yeah, the moment you stat something, players will find a way to kill it, no matter how powerful. And she should be an entity beyond any player's ability. The closest we ever saw to her having an actual issue was during Vecna Must Die, an event so impactful it created an entire new edition of the game.

The closes thing to a containment protocol is Sigil itself. As long as she has the City of Door she won't go wander off.
So the Foundation would do what they can to protect Sigil I guess.

There is speculation that she is actually trapped in Sigil. Another name for it, besides The City of Doors, is The Cage, althoughthat is usually taken to refer to the inability to leave if you can't find/open an appropriate portal leading out.

You're not far off honestly, but it's really more like they're trying to obtain administrator level access to the universe.
Sigil is... an interesting realm. Why is it circular? Is it the ring, or crown, of some ancient god? Perhaps it is but a byproduct of connecting every plane to one dimension? Perhaps it was built by an ancient race of arcane masters, who built it as a place of travel, but left their handiwork unclaimed? A circular shape does allow easy access to all gates on the plane.
The mysterious origin of sigil is fascinating to me.
Sigil is my favorite official setting!! It's a shame more hasn't been done with it by WotC...
If WotC made it today, Lady of Pain would probably be an overweight black woman in a Battle Wheelchair.

I remember playing Planescape back when it came out. After several round sof adult beverages, we threw out ideas about what Sigil was. The one we agreed on was that Sigil is a previous universe that collapsed and this small portion was saved inside of a massive circle of protection. The Lady is the genius loci (spirit guardian) so has the magical power of an entire universe at it's disposal.
I am beside myself with glee that you made this. Planescape is my favorite setting and, as with everything you touch, you brought it to life in extraordinary fashion.
Thank you and I hope this won't be your last foray into the planes.

Ran a two year campaign in the Planescape setting during the 3.5 days. It was some of the best fun in any campaign we've ever had. I can't wait for the pandemic to die down so I can bring my current group into Sigil for planar shenanigans redux.
Ah, yes, the Lady of Pain, also known as three squirrels standing on one another inside of a magic robe with the top one wearing a magic mask, all of which the City of Doors was created to imprison.

Technically the setting does exist in 5 edition, same with Spelljammer.
We just don't have an updated version of the settings.

How interesting, i've just started playing the ancient game known as planescape torment. I say ancient because as young adult these old computer games don't seem to appeal as much to my peers, but it does hold up a bit since it is different from most games i've played. So far it's been a surprisingly charming experience.
Love Sigil, keep up the great work man.
The factions are very much like Ravnica’s guilds, which itself is a sort of city of doors too.
Ahhh, Sigil, the centre of the multiverse and one of my favorite cities in D&D.
Sigil is literally the coolest place in the multiverse but almost no players will ever get to see it outside of planescape torment

Planescape Torment. The only game I ever played that lets you literally convince the last boss to give up and let you win because you are so smart and wise.
I thank you for introducing me to the original Ravnica. Now time to read deeply into the Planescape Campaign Setting and updating the Factions to the Honor System.

Get used to it if you ever play Planescape. The Outer Planes give no fucks and are full of spatial anomalies like that.

@@reverieWithRupam Planescape is the overall setting, the 'universe' if you will. As for the Outer Planes, basically the Outer Planes are a series of 'alignment' based planes. That is, each one is the embodiment of a specific moral coda. Example, the Plane of Lawful Good is also known as The Seven Mounting Heavens of Celestia. It's a massive mountain rising out of a sea that is infinitely deep and consists entirely of Holy Water.
If I wasn't playing a game right now, I'd watch this. It'll have to wait. I look forward to seeing how well it related to my ongoing 5e Planescape Roll20 game.

Whenever I’m joining into a campaign where the main plot are things like demon incursions or anything else similar to one realm tearing open portals and basically invade a realm by smashing their realm into the invasion target, my go to character is a Planeswalker Ranger (the coolest ranger subclass in my opinion) from an order who is basically part of basically a multiversal guardian force whose one purpose is to prevent discord in realmspace and prevent realms blessing into and taking over one another should rifts form, and my character is a member, either a unfortunate rookie or experienced veteran dependent on level joined. And this order is of course located in Sigil, as there’s quick and easy access to any realm in trouble.
Wish the volgun uploaded this often, gotta love the explorer
Thank you for taking me on a tour of Sigil. It was one of my favourite environments in dungeon & dragons when I was a kid.
This leans heavily into most of the widely accepted philosophies and fallacies. The most notable is the skeptics, and close to the end it leans close to the sensory fallacy. I’m all for it as the factions seem to be the extremes of philosophical ideologies, and fallacies.
I’d like to see you address the affects of each plane on spells, clerical power as they travel away from their Powers home plane, and the affects on magic items with pluses. This was always the most difficult to keep straight, and record keep, in campaign’s that I’ve run. Great video!

There is actually one time where a god managed to get inside Sigil. Vecna, the lich-god of secrets, entered Sigil while in the process of ascending to godhood, thereby finding the loophole in the Lady of Pain's protections of the city. He didn't manage to stay long, but he pulled it off.

I have the PlaneScape set since it's original release... And have barely scratched some parts of it. Add ALL of the campaigns ever played in the planes and you'll still have barely scratched the surface.
I actually shivered at the fact this being actually manages to full scale stop gods to go into the city.

Is there a reason why WOTC doesn't do anything with Planescape? Seems like it has a large fanbase in the role playing community.
More than likely, a combination of WOTC focusing on their original IP and a catch-22 of newer players being less familiar with it because of the lack of new content.
@@ItMeYaGril Yeah that lack of new content in this day and age is the real killer. With how unique and strange Planescape is, you'd think it would have been as successful as say Fallout. But then again I am biased and look for these alternatives to generic fantasy rpg's.

Most of the horror stories I write are based on Planescape. Love this setting. It's so rich. Sometimes the horror is trying to climb the spire to reach Sigil.

Kind of? Not really. The Lady can and has one shotted literal gods along with their entire worshipper base
Sigil. The one place where all are allowed to be nearly completely free. Free to believe almost anything you want. Free to live almost any way you desire. As long as you can achieve it, it can be yours. All under the watchful eyes of the Entity that makes Ares, Thor, and Asmodeus shudder and respect.
Other than ensuring that the Athar prosper, Asmodeus gives no fucks about The Lady or her Cage.

I can imagine the party sees an NPC messing with a dabu and the lady of pain appears. The watch as the NPC vanishes from the air and reappears in the same spot several seconds later either aged considerably or dead from starvation as they were teleported into her maze. Shows off her power while leaving it mysterious. It could also be a choice where if the party intervenes and helps the dabu, a coin purse could appear in their pocket as a form of non-verbal thanks.
I was just listening to the whole Exploring DnD series in a double shift last night. Nice.

The people involved in writing Faction War later said that there was a plan to write a second adventure that would result in the factions being mostly allowed back into Sigil, basically resetting things to how it was prior to Faction War. Unfortunately, TSR sold the game to WotC, 3rd ed came along, and the planes were largely abandoned by the new owners of the property.

I ran a campaign which heavily featured Sigil, it is so cool.
The d&d videos all got 50k+ views but r.i.p. I guess. Idk why it's being abandoned but its hard to not feel like it's because it doesn't meet a views quota. shame

Kind of reminds me of Ravnica that there are different factions and the like in one city, but very different in everything else about it.
Its a shame books on the Planscape setting are so rare these days or i'd buy them just to immerse myself in this very facinating setting.

I need to play Planescape: Torment. I feel this setting would be a bit difficult to set your D&D tabletop game though considering its complexity. Even Planescape Torment is astoundingly complex.

Thing to remeber about sigal the lady of pain is not the original owner of sigal. That was the now dead god of portals.... which temple's are still strewn around sigal.
Some people the dark of it is that the lady of pain killed him. Some thing she took over after.
There was a hint of a campaign upcoming about it but unfortunately ad&d ended before that and Wizards never really used planescape as a setting just as a note worthy place.

If you are referring to Aoskar, I think he just resided in Sigil, he never ruled it, though some questions whether or not he should and the worship of him grew.
When one of the dabus servants of the Lady of Pain became his cleric, that is when she had the god killed. Her presence there predates his.
