      Lucky you. I love my Elantra, but right off the dealer lot its been having problems with creaky front suspension and engine pinging. Haven't taken to the dealership yet, but will mention these problems when I schedule my first free oil change at the 7500 mile mark.

      @@palebeachbum I have never heard any creaking sounds at all. I will hear slight pinging, but only under full throttle acceleration, to where it shifts near redline. Which I very rarely do. Also, you should get your oil changed at about 1500 miles. Engine break in will cause tiny metal shavings in the oil. Its normal, but you want to get it out. I changed the oil on mine at about 1200 miles, an I change it every 3 to 4 thousand miles. I keep my cars longterm , so I take very good care of them . I'm at 45.000 now. At 50.000 I'll have the transmission fluid changed. Definitely take it in for the creaking noise.

      I don't think the warning has anything to do with the tires. You always have to assume that solid asphalt (earth's crust) is always going to vary up to 8 degrees colder or hotter than the air due to the laws of thermodynamics. So it is still a valid warning for icy roads. Just because it's 39 in the air doesn't mean you can't have roads frozen. This same logic applies to why overpasses and bridges freeze before grounded roads.

      @@davidj9405 impossible, physics wouldnt allow that. I have this car & it does the same thing.
      The engine only produces so much heat, & it doesn't magically disappear it must go somewhere. If you have the heat on it's going from the engine into your cabin. You just don't notice it when it heats up slowly. But if you leave the heat off then the engine will heat up quicker.
      I've had it where I got the engine up to heat, then once I turned the cabin heat on I actually watched as the engine cooled off, this was -30 celsius in Canada though.

    My wife an I own 5 cars and they also beep at 39 degrees because that is the temperature that bridges can freeze and I can say for sure here in Western Pennsylvania the bridges get quite slick right about that temperature.
    Also I find it interesting about what you said regarding how long it takes to warm up because between our Audi, a Honda, a Subaru, and an Acura we own, my wife's 2018 Hyundai Elantra warms up the fastest out of all of them. Now she does have the Value edition that has automatic climate control but I wouldn't have thought that would make such as difference.
    And you are 100% correct on MPG... my wife consistently get's over 40 MPG even driving in our hilly area of the state.
    Overall, love the car so much I'm thinking of selling two of our other "much more expensive" cars and just getting another Elantra! That kind of sums up how much we like it and think you get so much value for what you pay. I would highly recommend to anyone to get the value edition though!

    • @CarConfections
      @CarConfections  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It really is an awesome car! I love it!! And yeah, I just figured 39 was a little too high of a temperature threshold. Also, if there is one thing I regret it's not buying the Value Edition. It basically would've eliminated all of my very minor complaints but I really love my car! I've only gotten to like it more in my year of ownership! Thanks for watching and hope you enjoy your car too!

      @@CarConfections I have owned VW's and BMW's and Mini's, and they all flash a warning sound when the temperature gets to 39 degrees. That's because, under colder weather conditions in near freezing temps, you can lose a lot of traction. The wheels may become like hard hockey pucks on the ice. So the warning is there to be more attentive to stopping.

      I think his heater control valve is stuck mostly closed. A trip to the dealer could confirm if there's a problem or not. My Elantra heats up very fast. I hear the new turbo CRV engines have a real problem not heating up driving around town at slow speeds.

    • @alexandermilentis2130
      @alexandermilentis2130 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is a pretty stupid comment. Just because it is a bridge doesn't mean it magically freezes at 39 degrees. Water cannot freeze at 39 degrees. Water on bridges can freeze quicker than a normal road because on normal roads the ground is actually warmer than the outside area, so it sort of warms the road itself, which doesn't happen on bridges. But that doesn't mean a bridge can freeze at a temperature that isn't physically possible hahaha

    From coming over from a pickup I drove for 20 years to my 17 Elantra, there's a world of difference. After having it for a year and putting 25000 miles on it, the thing I miss most about my pickup is I don't have to sit down getting in. That's it.. I love my Elantra ! Take about 10 minutes for the heat to kick in but that's better than 20 minutes on my truck. I have a hard time remembering the engine is running cause I can't hear it, it's so quite. I love the ride ! I really love I only have to full it up once a week ! I love that freakin radio ! I love that smooth ride ! I really love the air conditioner ! I don't like climbing out of the car. I do miss my 5 speed transmission over the automatic. I miss not looking over and seeing a pair of pretty legs, now I just see a car door. Even though I've had my Elantra for a year, my friends don't know who I am when I honk at them, they're still used to my old rusty truck..
    Overall, I love my Elantra..

    Such a comfortable drive! So quiet when driving and idling! Transitioning from sport to regular mode to eco is so easy!
    I do agree heating up the car takes awhile but I find starting the car 3-5 mins before driving helps with the initial lag and heating up! I fortunately have the heated seats and steering so they are usually heated by then.

    I have had my 2018 Hyundai Elantra since May 2018 I have put 35,000 miles on the vehicle using it for rideshare. I agree and disagree with some of your opinions about this vehicle, it is a very spacious vehicle customer Lovett my kids love it I think we have the same trim peanut butter inside with pearl white exterior in the SEL trim. One of the things I like about the seats are easy to clean and the driver front seat can recline back really far so the driver can take a nap if needed. The Android carplay would be a nice feature if I didn't need to use my phone for rideshare. I have not had the opportunity to use the Android carplay, however, I do have an issue with my Bluetooth disconnecting regularly even when set to priority. it actually has me thinking about getting a different head unit. Also upgrading the stock head unit is next to Impossible without using stock wires because of the breakaways in the door and you have to buy a harness that specifically made for this car. there is some TH-cam videos that explains that. thank you for your video. I love my 2018 Elantra.

    I've had my 2018 Elantra SEL for about 10 months now and have about 10,000 miles on it. I've driven it on a few 3 hour freeway trips, an 8-hour each way freeway trip, and each day I drive it from semi-rural area into town to work and back. I've driven it in the summer and the winter. It's a very comfortable car, and the gas mileage has really pleasantly surprised me. It has lots of zip for being an inexpensive non-sporty car. I am not a huge sound system person - not at all. I had a Santa Fe for 16 years and loved the sound system. This one, IMO, has a pretty lousy sound system and it's one thing I've considered changing. Again, I'm not normally a sound system person and stock stereos usually are just fine for me - but not this one. I'm going to play with it some more to try to get the sound better for me. And I really think the seats are OKAY but not really that comfortable. I hate the size of cup holders, and wonder why they even bothered with door cup holders because they basically only hold a small bottled water. The console cup holders in between the front seats will hold small coffee cups (normal cups - not travel cups) but anything remotely larger than a small coffee cup won't fit.
    Overall, I like the car but am not in love with it just yet. I hope to be because I am one to keep a car until it's breathing its last breath. I'm not sure I'll do that with this one - we'll see.
    Thank you for this review though. I think it was thorough, well done, great video and audio. OH! And I turned off the beeping sound when I lock and unlock the car.

    I actually purchased the 18 Elantra SEL in the same color actually but with black cloth seats. It is by far one of my best investments ever. I had a 2016 Kia Rio and this is by far a huge step up. It’s perfect for everyday driving and I commute about 54 miles a day. I will say that I’ve only gotten to 40 mpg and I average 31-35mpg. I guess it depends on the environment and location of where you travel.

  • @DillaryTrumpton
    @DillaryTrumpton 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I can attest to the warming up issue (2018 Value Edition, 18k miles). It's bad in midwest temperatures. "Sport" mode or manual shifting down a gear or two can somewhat help if you're gonna take it above 50 for awhile, but for short commutes, just get used to freezing.
    As far as the radio's audio quality goes, it sounded pretty underwhelming imo (no bass, it sounded bland, muddy almost). It was disappointing coming from a car with a cheap-o factory installed amp to this. I ended up swapping out the head unit with a Kenwood DDX374BT (nothing fancy) and it sounded so much better and I could finally hear music clearly over the road noise. Car audio's subjective, but I do recommend listening to an aftermarket system if given the chance. It's insane the difference it makes. If you like it as it is though, more power to you, glad it works.
    Edit: made the comment less shit.

    Great job on this video. You did a good job hitting the high and low points of this car. Like you said, no car is perfect and they all have areas that could be improved. I bought myself a new 2018 Elantra SEL in Dec. 2018. Same color combo as yours (classy). I totally agree with all of your likes and dislikes. Mine is at just over 2,000 miles.
    An additional complaint I have is that I find the transmission rather annoying in city driving conditions. When decelerating, it downshifts rather aggressively thru all gears with the car in Normal drive mode. When I'm in stop and go traffic, where the traffic rolls along at maybe 5mph then stops, the transmission constantly hunts between 1st and 2nd gear. In those traffic situations, I have to shift it to the manual mode to keep it in 1st gear. Otherwise, the constant and up and down shifts drive me nuts. Other times, I'm usually cruising right around 30mph and 40mph (common speed limits here), both of which are shift points with this transmission. So if traffic slows down a couple miles an hour, it downshifts. Then traffic speeds up a couple miles an hour, it upshifts. Imagine this over and over for several miles. It grows tiring. This is the first automatic equipped car I've ever owned with more than 4 gears, so I suspect it's just how life is with a transmission with this many gears. I worry about long-term wear though with all this needless shifting.
    My other complaints relate to a couple of quality concerns. Since day one of ownership, the front suspension makes a horrible creaking noise when I go over uneven pavement with the wheel turned sharply in either direction. Sounds like an old creaky door in a haunted house. The other issue has to do with the engine. Under moderate to heavy throttle, the engine pings and rattles. The sound is subtle, but it's there if you listen. This shouldn't be happening, unless it's bad gas. I'm going to try a different gas station from my usual place and if that doesn't help, I'm going to try using a higher octane to test my theory. I definitely need to make an appointment with my Hyundai dealership though to address these couple of issues. Have you experienced either of these issues with your Elantra in the 5k miles you've driven yours?

    • @CarConfections
      @CarConfections  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you!! I appreciate that! And congrats on your new car.... you have great taste haha!
      I would definitely agree with the engine pinging and rattling. The transmission I haven't had many issues with, but if the engine is cold or under heavy acceleration it sounds like it's about to blow up. It starts rattling and making horrible noises so I normally don't accelerate too hard. I can definitely see the transmission thing around 30-40mph but most of my driving is 60+MPH or 25mph in the city.
      The suspension I haven't had any issues with, BUT when I bought the car we did test drive one that had a creaky suspension. After we drove it, we picked out another one (the one I bought) and it had a much better ride. I'm not really sure the reason for this but that was our experience...
      Thanks for making the comment! We appreciate you watching and good luck with your ownership!

      @@CarConfections I've got about 4,500 miles on my 2018 Elantra now. The pinging is getting really bad. Now, when I start the engine cold, the engine is making a clattering noise really loudly until the engine RPMs idle down to normal. It sounds like metal hitting metal. I think my engine is going to blow up or seize one of these days. I drive like an old man, so it's certainly not an issue of abuse. I love the car, so I'm really disheartened.

    Nice video, I got the value edition which eliminates basically all of those complaints with the SEL version. Love my car but i found the bottom of the front windshield fogs up a lot easier than my old cars (even with outside air ventilating inside). Also a strange issue is when I goto my car, twice since last April I have found the trunk open (not all the way up, but released open). I don't know why but I'm hoping it isn't some issue with the car nor a burglar, but maybe the trunk release button on the keyfob was pressed while it was pressed against the inside of my pants pocket. Has your trunk randomly been found opened? These are my only complaints, love everything else about it too

    • @CarConfections
      @CarConfections  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks!! And that is very true! About the trunk, the Value Edition has the hands-free smart trunk so it actually will release if you just stand next to the trunk for like 3 seconds. That could be the problem, or you could just accidentally be pushing the button on the fob. I've accidentally pushed the button 2 or 3 times and found it a couple hours later with the trunk wide open haha

    I just hit 32K in my 2018 Elantra 4 door (Limited). No problems whatsoever and I drive the car very rough. I reach the 4500 rpm range daily and go up and over very steep mountains in California. The grapevine to be exact. Never had a single problem. It's an awesome car. Since I drive so much I did swap out the low profile 17 inch rims/tires for 16 inch OEM rims/tires. The thicker sidewall of the 16 inch tires makes the ride more comfortable, increases the ground clearance by 1/2 inch, less prone to getting a flat compared to the low profile tires and cost cheaper to replace. I have the oil changed with full synthetic every 15K miles. Yes, I know I'm not following the "severe driving" manual jargon but my Dad works for Mobil (28 years) and says I have nothing to worry about because their oil can honestly go up to 15K miles. And he proved it to me by giving me an oil analysis report of my used oil during the last oil change which indicated "good" in all categories.

    I love my 2018 Hyundai Elantra but my biggest complaint is how it will lock itself! I am surprised no one is talking about this. If it is locked and you unlock it with the key fob, it will automatically re lock itself in like 30 seconds if you do not open a door! So if a buddy of mine wants to get something from my car I basically have to wait until he is beside the car to unlock it otherwise it'll just re lock itself before he even gets to it.

    Around 3:30 the reason the warning is set several degrees above freezing is that in some cases, such as over metal bridges, ground temperatures can be several degrees colder than air temperature in the morning. So you can be surprised with slick black ice. But you’re right, 39 degrees seems a bit high to set the warning at.
    And around 6:00 I think the reason for the more muted locking horn is because people get upset at how loud locking horns have become since most use the regular horn. A lot of car makers are going with more muted locking horns.

Although I haven't noticed mine being slow to warm up, I think you might be low and coolant and the blind spot monitoring doesn't deactivate on mine at 20, so that's kind of strange. But yes, the double horn is stupid. The key fobs are stupid. But the gas mileage is phenomenal and the base stereo isn't bad. I actually upgraded just speakers and that made a huge difference. But the ride quality and everyday performance for booting around town. The car is fantastic.

    The coolant absorbs the heat from the engine, causing it to become hot. This coolant is then routed through a “mini” radiator called a heater core. ... Checking to make sure the engine warms up properly is number one on the list. When driving, an engine typically takes about 5-10 minutes to reach its proper temperature.

    The first 2 things you mention are ironically good things for me. I live in Houston so who cares. The lack of intermediate fan speeds? Hot most of the year, for 8 months of the year I'll have the air on full anyway, and drop it one notch 2 other months. A lesson for youngster: on temp freezing warning. They are naturally going to build in a margin and though I've lived in Houston the last half of my life I was born and lived in Wichita, KS the first half. Temperature varies a lot along a road, and depending on buildings surrounding you (or not) and other factors, can vary considerably. They are thinking in this case when giving a temperature margin, of bridges. It can be 31 under the bridge and 35 or 36 along a road. Temperature isn't as stable as you'd think from watching the weather. Getting ready to buy one. I rented it and really like it.

    I own a 2017 Elantra. They have a 2.0 Atkinson cycle variant of the Nu engine. I would stay away. Mine, and according to many reports the dealer told me they get, is they make a loud ticking/tapping noise when cold. It sounds like a diesel. Dealer reported Hyundai said it was normal because the metal shrinks in cold weather. I have never ever had a car do this in cold weather and I have had my fair share of bombs. I bought it used so am only covered up to 60000 miles. I said to Hyundai ok if this is so normal cover my car to the full 10 year 100000 mile warranty. They just keep giving me the run around. I mean if there is no issue with the car it would not cost them anything to give the full powertrain warranty. I have no confidence in the longevity of this engine and unfortunately it looks like they are putting these in more models. Also I think these engines are in the Kia Forte and other Kia models.
