Is the 2018 Hyundai Elantra Sport a performance BARGAIN or BUST? - Raiti's Rides

  • The 2018 Hyundai Elantra Sport is here and packing a turbocharged inline-4 under the hood with 201HP. From it's sporty styling to DCT gearbox and raspy exhaust note. Is the Hyundai Elantra Sport a worthy competitor to the Honda Civic Si and VW Golf GTI?

Damn right it does! As a loyal, repeat owner, Hyundai customer, the really messed up with the 2019 styling. The 2017-2018 Elantra's have a look of class and refinement that the 2019 definitely lacks. The 2019 just plain LOOKS cheap and cliquey. No way would I trade my 2018 for the newer model!

I have the same exact car. I’m at 24k miles and so far so good. The only things I think they could have done better is a tighter steering with the sport mode and better brakes. Brakes can be upgraded so I’m cool with that. Hyundai service departments are top notch. I traded a 2012 mustang convertible and trust me Hyundai customer service is better than Ford’s.

I've had my 18' ES DCT for almost a year and it's a great bargain. You won't see 8 of them at once like the new Civic. Good ride/handling compromise, awesome brakes, yet steering feel could be better. The engine is great with low end power and the sport mode really wakes up the performance of this car (keeps revs higher) getting on the freeway, etc. Tons of equipment, it comes fully loaded.

Kizzle did you opt for the tech package? Seems like a pricey option for what you get, esp since this has Apple Car play and Android Auto, you probably don’t need nav. How does it compare to the VW GLI ? I’m torn between the two. Can great deals on the ES, I don’t think they are selling.

I have a 2018 ES DCT, white identical to the one you reviewed. I’ve done some modifications to mine; SXTH Element intake and a custom axle back exhaust, sounds like an absolute beast now. I have always been a fan of the Civic Si, owned a couple, but I love this car, what you get at the price point is unbeatable. Hyundai is knocking out of the park with their latest lineup, I’ve got to test drive the Veloster-N and that car is amazing and I can’t wait for the Elantra Sport N (you know their going to do it). Great video by the way.

One thing that brought me here was the same exact styling as the 2013-2016 Dodge Dart. Most people say that the Alfa romeo and the Chrysler 200 looks like the Dodge Dart but I see no comparison. The headlights look the same, the grill almost looks the same. I love the style and I definitely will consider on buying one in the future.

Good review! But you left out one of the VERY important details that separates the Sport from all other Elantra's, the multilink independent rear suspension! That coupled with the 201HP motor are what really separate this car from the pack! I have a 2018 Elantra Sport (Electric Blue) that I bought back in April (traded in my 2013 Elantra Coupe), and I LOVE THIS CAR! Mine is FULLY loaded with all the options, and stickered for under $27k! Performance for the price is awesome, and the value can't be beat! Lots of room, comfortable, not too harsh a ride for the sport tuned suspension, quick get up and go, and it LOVES the corners! You can drive this car in ways that you wouldnt dare even try with any other Elantra, and it looks WAY better than many other cars in its class (including the 2019 Elantra. Sorry Hyundai, but you screwed up with the 2019 styling!)

I never liked or trusted Korean cars, but know the first top of the line Hyundai Sonata had an unbranded top of the line Alpine Cassette deck, essentially the same one I had in my Buick GN, along with a high output Alpine amp and Polk Audio speakers. Then I saw the videos of the Hyundai factory stunt drivers using old Elantras... You will be blown away when skilled drivers can do with cheap, basic cars. So, when this Elantra Sport first came out a few years ago, I watched all the videos and dicovered all the details about the BMW M inspired independent suspension from their top engineer, and all the other performance gear, styling and amenities, including the exhaust, and wanted one in blue, fully loaded with the great Harmon Kardon stereo, leather seats and steering wheel, and the DCT transmission. But was later swayed to the Honda Civic Sport Hatchback, and the other cars I mentioned. Still a great car, unless they ruined it for 2019. I haven't checked. Downsides may be durability and reliability, and lack of an LSD. The differential, not the drug... But it's a nice option for a reasonable price, even fully loaded. Especially if you like the Hyundai and Kias. You know they are serious into performance with the Stinger and other models coming out soon.

I didn’t have an option to color or tranny as it was the only one for sale in my area ( without having to drive 2 hours + to find another .. and I’m big on convenience ). It looks stunning in black. Most of the subtle features that make it stand out as anything more than a base model Elantra are hidden unless you look hard. So it hides very well however it definitely stands out. And those who know about these cars pay attention. I’ve had many people come up to me and ask about it simply because the exhaust note or the lovely rims. “Is this really an Elantra?” I love how subtle she is. I’m huge in sleepers. You can’t go wrong with any color option available. The deep gray and the bmw yellow are where I wish I could’ve went but seriously this thing has exceeded my expectations.
This is coming from a 2009 WRX, a 2011 Grand Cherokee with a Hemi and a 2015 Jetta.

I am totally biased in my statements as I have owned two Civic Si's in the past, but sedan vs sedan, I would take the outside looks of the Hyundai vs the Civic. The ass end of the sedan Si is hideous. Now if you put the Si coupe against this sedan, that's a tougher argument. The Hyundai is cheaper. That's a plus, but the interior of the Si is hands down better quality. You also get adaptive damping suspension on the Si. Also a bit more power and torque. I do like the direction Hyundai is going, but I'm not quite sold on it vs the Civic Si just yet.

You would be surprised, but the interior quality on the Hyundai is overall better. I own the Elantra sport. I drove my buddies Civic SI and the dash moved up and down, and the gauge visor was wobbly as well. The only thing that was nicer was the door panels. Overall the Hyundai has a much more sturdy interior. I think they drive pretty much evenly, the Civic has slightly better steering feel, but my buddy likes my car better than his.

For a 20yr old, how much would the insurance on this bad boy be? In California

That's a good question. There are so many factors when looking at insurance costs. Things like the city you live in, your record and I also believe some insurance companies take into consideration your credit score!

I looked at insurance for this. I'm 20 but I have 1 ticket and my insurance for this would be 300 a month.
