- The brand new PSP is here (alright joke over) The PlayStation Portal is here, Sony's new PS5 remote play device. Sporting a fancy 8" LCD screen, haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and an interesting but functional design. Today we're gonna unbox the new Portal and set it up, play a bunch of games, and do some initial testing. Is the latency bad? What are the pros and cons? Will I ever find true happiness? PlayStation needs to put some respect on Ryan’s name. They don’t give this dude any early review copies of anything and he covers more PS news than any of the people that actually get review copies.

@@caiocesamonothing should be reviewed as a "fan". The review should always be objective. For me the value for money for this thing is 0/10. Just use your phone/tablet + controller and save yourself a small fortune. It does absolutely nothing but stream PS games and even then you can't play everything. Expect this to be heavily reduced very soon.

I actually think the look of this is friggin awesome lol. And as someone who uses remote play a lot on my tab s8,steam deck and now Lenovo legion go the big thing it’s doing is that it’s literally a ps5 controller lol and I’m still considering getting one because of that. Only thing it’s missing for me and still has me on the fence is that it has no back paddles lol. I’ve been using them now for so long on everything I play my PlayStation,Xbox and pc it’s kind of important for me.

I think it was a great idea to have the open space by the controller handles. The few times I've played the Switch in handheld mode, I sorta felt that my fingers weren't resting in comfortable spots. Designing this as if you were holding an actual console controller was a nice move.
If you have the video paused here: 00:15 the look on Ryan's face tells me the level of enthusiasm he has for this product even before I watch the review.

Great and honest review, I got mine yesterday and I spent several hours with it and I was happy with my purchase, I already ordered a case from eBay for it witch I would highly recommend cause this thing is sturdy but I would recommend storing this properly when not in use or traveling with it

I appreciate you acknowledging latency is always going to be there. Tired of reviewers saying there’s no lag. There’s always latency in AV and networking, hardware and software is just configured to try to compensate for it.
Any review that says no lag, I will never take seriously.

Probably the best review on TH-cam. For my use case I love this device as I don’t always have access to the TV
In terms of "not having access to the tv" it's more so that I'm playing games that I can't play in front of my wife because she doesn't want to be spoiled before she can play it herself. I use a long HDMI cord and a switcher that changes the input from the living room tv to the bedroom tv (it's not as cumbersome as you'd think as the rooms are directly adjacent)
It works pretty well. We were originally using her PS4 for remote play in the bedroom, now we can just play the PS5 in there without even moving it.
This is the reason why I subscribed to him, perfect detailed an all round great review, people of Playstation should really reach out to him.
Didn't even take it outside, or talked about batery duration, or brightness outside...
Duude so I used to watch everyone one of your videos from like 2013-2016 or so. Then again in 2020. First persons opinion I wanted on this new PS handheld!! So glad the day I decided to research. Is the day of your upload!! Thank you for all the amazing video’s throughout the years.
Nice unboxing video and thanks so much for uploading this too! I personally really like the PlayStation Portal myself as well, but I actually don't really know if I'm really going to get one just yet even though I already have a PS5 console now and all. If I ever do happen to decide to get the PlayStation Portal device for my PS5, I might wait at least a year or two perhaps before I finally do decide to purchase one.

Love your channel Ryan. I just got my ps portal yesterday and really like it.
After nightshift I came home and watched the "I Played PS5 Games On Remote Play For A Week, Here's How It Went" video and was like my guy went right at it, trying it in the parking lot in his car and at his buddies place, which is the 2 places I'd use mine. Then I realized it wasn't the Portal and it was from a year ago lol. Then I woke up to this!! Our boy didn't disappoint!!!

Really glad to see your coverage of this, I was starting to become skeptical of all the positive reviews I was seeing from channels who got the device before launch because no one I saw was doing any real benchmarking, just saying “It feels good!” So it’s a nice to see a more level headed look that actually examines the device in comparison to Sony’s past remote play offerings.
Where positive reviews ? I have some proper channels where they slash this down and I agree with them it’s a pointless product

Easily the most complete and best coverage I've seen
This is the perfect Xmas gift. I occasionally use remote play around the house, but not so much that the cost makes sense for me. I would love to just have one of these things but don't need it all.
This is exactly me. I want one because it's simply neat tech. I don't really have much real use for it, but its pretty cool so I'd still want it just to have it.
It would be really cool if there were an option to make this a second screen controller like the Wii U, for maps, inventory, other game mechanics, etc. Maybe someday in the future. Otherwise, this seems slightly redundant, but I could see it being a good option for someone who only wants to remote play PS5 games in a true handheld form factor since nothing else has adaptive triggers (that I'm aware of) besides a normal DualSense controller.
Development might do it but nah

The video I was waiting for! I think this device would be perfect for me because my wife usually has the tv in the evenings to relax. Would be a great option to work on my PS backlog this way.
Got mine in yesterday, and I love it.
2 main things that turn me off about the Portal
- No bluetooth connection (even with other Sony headphones)
- No direct video output connection with the PS5 (why not have this as an option via USB C?)
- Plus, seems like the latency issues are similar to the Remote play app, so there isnt much incentive to get this when you can just connect a controller wirelessly to any device.
A big chance missed here by sony - they could've added a sim card slot to help improve latency for online games and connectivity in hard to reach areas, but they'll probably save that for a future portal
It's not just a sim card slot that would be needed, it's an entire cellular radio system. This is not really designed for remote play while away from home. It's very unlikely that a mobile network would have less latency compared to a Wi-Fi connection using a landline internet service.
I bought a WiFi extender for home and it improved my connection dramatically.

I'd love to get one at some point, but I'm waiting for Sony to add a native streaming option. So to be able to stream from the servers with PS+ instead of JUST local PS5 streaming.

Bigg oof. If the portable streamed games their wouldn't be any need for a ps5. Or at least wouldn't sell that well. If it were possible and still needed a ps5 it would be a bit controversial.

You think they will sell a $200 device that can play all PS5 games through cloud steaming? Why would people spend 500+ on the PS5 then? It's not gonna happen unfortunately as Sony isn't gonna lose that precious console hardware revenue.
It might impact the "need" for a ps5, but it absolutely wouldn't impact the desire for PS5. PS+ Premium offers streaming. They could easily extend that to the Portal and they could easily restrict the usage to people who own a ps5. This isn't rocket science it's basic capitalism.

Thanks for such an in depth first impressions of the portal Ryan though the best part was Melissa rubbing her face all over it while you were doing close up shots of the buttons/ports 😂. I would say the best user for it would be someone who already does a lot of remote play (already knows the limits of their connection is and is used to the streaming idiosyncrasies) and is looking for a more comfortable experience since the dual sense is one of the best controllers around in the hand. I like the idea of it but I don't do much remote play and I can't see this device changing that. Maybe I'll pick one up on a deep discount near end of life or something.

Got my portal yesterday I actually love it played some Madden in bed while my wife was watching a show, it's a great device for me. Thanks Ryan you are that guy Playstation needs to pay you or send free products, I've been a Playstation guy from the beginning and you represent that so well
Really great job addressing the concerns over latency. Truly disappointing to see that the Portal offers little to no improvement over standard remote play. The slowmo shots are extremely helpful.
It is better, larger screen....better battery life. Latency is the same or better than phone or other crap. We are running into the same technical issues any remote device has no matter what. The latency is so small on my network its hardly noticeable.
Yep I figured it wouldn't be much better plus anyone can buy the $5 PS play app and control the bitrate and more to get a smoother experience than the PS remote play app .
Yeah, this gas probably something to do with a hardware limitations, I hope that next generation they add something to the PS6 to make these devices awesome to use. I'm expecting that they will do it for PSVR3.
The idea of a device like this is awesome, I don't game outside of my home, specially with current unpocketable handhelds. Having the freedom to play anywhere around my house with a nice 8" screen is desired, but it has to have 0 or very minimal latency.
I would like to see tests that compare different quality routers.
@@goncaloduarte4683 I've used remote play quite a bit even on the opposite side of the country and latency with single player games is not even noticeable. Diablo 4 has had some hiccups here and there but I'm not even sure if it was remote play or just the game acting up as that kinda thing happens while playing without remote play. Just my experience.
@@Wudanmaster116 A few videos showcased the latency on the phone to actually be superior. The only real benefit the portal has is the dual sense features. Otherwise, it’s apparently useless.

I'm running the new Netgear RS700 with Wi-Fi 7 along with a Cat 8 cable coming from my modem. Just tested the Portal today and works great in every room in my house. Of course my network is more robust than most. 😅 Hope everyone else had a good experience with their Portal as well!
And if you stream to a rental or hotel anywhere in the world with good internet it will play the same with minor graphical dropout. What no one mentions is that even if the graphics drop from time to time....the core control and game action inputs and outputs are prioritized over graphic fidelity.

All remote play devices add a latency that can affect outcomes in real time games on top of their network latency. So why would you think someone is trying to tell you there is no latency for real time fps's when people are smarter than that??
Great video! I'm actually more interested in their new lossless audio technology. I want to get their new headset or buds, but they cost a pretty penny. I would love a video exclusively on those. How it works, is the sound better? Those kinds of things.

I expected the portal to not be very good but I received mine today and it’s pretty awesome. I played several races on gt7 and hour or so of tear down and some resident evil 4 remake. I was very impressed with how responsive it was and the quality of the visuals.
what i like the most is the built quality very solid not look cheap like other remote devices.

Hey man, can you turn on the PS5 from the portal (assuming the PS5 is turned off)? Or do you need to have it in rest mode in order for the portal to wake it up? Thanks!

I had a cheaper 3.5mm bluetooth adapter too and the latency does lag the audio behind. I know they have better low latency adapters so I would be curious if anyone tested those.
Just use headphones plugged into the jack , sounds fine with no stuttering
Great video! My only problem with the portal is I can’t watch any media apps. This could easily be fixed with a software update, here’s hoping sony is satisfied with sales of the portal and supports it throuout the future.

Please make comparison, PS Portal vs Remote Play App (Android, iOS, Windows) to see if Portal has any advantage over app in lag/latency/quality department. Ofc over same network, same distance etc with PS5 connected via cable and over wi-fi.
If you have good WiFi the portals lag feels nonexistent . It was a major concern of mine. I’m playing Horizon forbidden west on it right now and I’m truly amazed at how it feels just like my ps5 .
@@oni_vergil7342 I do have good WiFi and fast donwload and upload however Remote Play app on Android both official and one unofficial (100x times better than Sonys) is not allowing me to play in acceptable way. So I am curious if Portal is aby better.
Wait i'm confused. Why would a online device that's needed to work have an airplane mode option? Wouldn't that disconnect you from your PS5 and in turn make the device obsolete?
I guess it's a legal requirement more than anything.

Well but now look at PS Vita's lifetime sales and wonder why they don't see a market for it from their own ecosystem. You can argue that it's their fault (because it is) but that still doesn't change the figures nor can Sony be trusted to support the console with games when all their PS Studios devs are holed up with development issues.
I’m glad you got yours. Went to pick mine up at the GameStop outside of Philly where I live on release day, and was told that Fed Ex screwed up their delivery. Just curious, did this happen to anyone else?
I did and then funny thing is right after I left, FedEx delivered them and I had to drive right back to pick it up🤣

I am failing to see the point of the Portal. Why not just get a Samsung Tab A8 and use that for Remote Play? That way you don't even have to be in the same network but you can play from wherever you want. The price difference (about 100 euros at least here in Finland) would cover an extra controller and a cover that works as a stand, plus I use my A8 for other things too, mostly for reading. You get a bigger screen, the freedom to play anywhere, an extra controller, bluetooth, and a tablet.
I had some severe latency issues to the point where it was unplayable. The Portal would connect for about 5-10 seconds, then disconnect, reconnect, repeat. I've been tinkering with some of the configuration of my wireless AP and I'm seeing some improvements after increasing the power to the 5 GHz antenna and reducing power to the 2.4 GHz antenna. You also want to be cognizant of your WiFi channel width and the wireless congestion in your area. A wider channel (80 or 160 MHz) can provide faster speeds, but also increases the likelihood of interference (especially if you have lots of nearby neighbors with their own wireless systems). 40 MHz may be a sweet spot for the 5 GHz in regards to balancing speed while reducing interference.
Is your ps5 on a wired connection? What are your internet speeds?

You already know the answer, it's a scam. If it was a problem it would exist using the app on a phone, which it does not, probably why he didn't demonstrate it his phone because it's probably that doesn't exists.

1. Third party adapters have since replaced the need for expensive Memory stick Pro duos on standard PSP (Non-Go)
2. The Vita was an attempt to stave off piracy. However, they should've released an SD-card version once they knew they were ending support.
I have it and I must say despite all the negatives against this handheld I am really enjoying it makes me jump back into some games I didn’t finish I would have finished them on a regular phone or tablet but the idea of have an actual screen with the features of the Dualsense without using your controller is wonderful

I’ll give Sony props. I didn’t expect this to be worth it and I still don’t; however I do see the value for somebody that is sharing a single TV. Definitely not something I’d use but I can see it has a place in the market.

But it is still a shameless and halfbaked cash grab tho. You can literally do MORE on bigger tablets with a basic PS5 controller if you wanted to. And why spend 200 on a literal tiny screen when you could spend that on anything else? I'm not a sony hater or something. But this shit is just pointless. If they had managed to somehow make the latency better then other options? Then maybe it would be something worth. But remote play in general will always be half baked overall due to the horrendously noticable latency most of the time.
And locking reliable wirless sound behind a 200 dollar price tag to buy their bullshit earbuds is straight greed. Nothing more.

@@Am4t3r4su I've been wanting something exactly like this since the PS4. I hate using my phone because it prevents me from using my phone for anything else while streaming. The official remote play app doesn't support 3rd party controllers like a Backbone/Kishi, and I don't own a tablet. And if I did, I'd still have to find a place to prop it up, unpair my PS5 controller from the pS5, pair it to the tablet, and undo it all when I want to play locally. It's clunky. A dedicated device with a screen WAY bigger than my phone is a significantly better experience. Now it's as grab-and-play as a Switch.

I'd like to see a comparison between Chiaki for steam deck and the portal. I think the lack of Bluetooth on the portal could be a deal breaker
Not really sure what you expect to be so different between the two. They both do the same thing in the same way. Except you have the benefit of using bluetooth headphones you all ready own. Instead of shelling another 2-3 hundred dollars to Sony.
The PS5 doesn't natively support Bluetooth but you think that not having it on a accessory is a dealbreaker? I think Sony avoided having the device release with streaming support because they didn't want to advertise it as a way to play PS games without a PS5. This device and the PSVR2 are about enhancing the PS ecosystem....not giving people an alternative to it.

Reviewers are doing a great disservice by not telling potential customers that they can do the same exact thing the Portal does (Remote Play) with just about any laptop, tablet, or smartphone with an actual Dualsense controller and Bluetooth headphones/earbuds and it only takes 1 to 2 minutes to set up. It couldn’t be easier.
Latency is the issue on all devices. This is my personal last attempt at lowering that latency and if it doesn’t do any better than the other devices I’ve tried I’m refunding and waiting about 3 years to see if latency is lower 😆
I think most people looking into something as niche as this already know about remote play. But this is just more convenient and dedicated for this one purpose. People are making too big of a deal out of it.

This device doesn't need to exist, it doesn't improve remote play, doesn't support Bluetooth, and cost more than existing options for no reason. You could spend the same money for a cheap tablet with a stand or buy a Backbone for a smartphone.
Not to mention the stick drift which if happens,you gotta throw this whole thing in the garbage can.

it was smart breaking up the updates to different parts of teh controller if it was all in one it would severly add update delays due to have rewrite the whole code every time if its a controller issue they can just send a small fast update to just teh controller board instead of rewrting the whole systems code just to fix a controller issue fast
Sony should allow the Portal to be recognised by the PS5 as a seperate/standalone Remote Play device that removes all media viewing restrictions and cloud gaming restrictions that are generally present for remote play when streaming your PS5 to a phone/tablet/PC etc. The Portal's 8 inch high quality display seems like a waste for not being able to watch Netflix or being able to do cloud gaming from Sony servers. Remote play feature normally restricting media viewing is understandable but for the Portal it definitely should be enabled by Sony.
XBOX IIRC blocks non-gaming software with Remote play. This isn't solely decided by Sony. It makes no sense using a streaming service over Remote Play anyways because it's already not native to your device. Just use something with a better display, something better for more cinematic viewing.
I figured out that you can watch TH-cam and even sign in, but it has to be through the PS5 browser. Unfortunately though videos will not be full screen, but it's interesting that it works at least.
I'm surprised about the connection issues people are having with this device. As a 1st party device one would think Sony has optimised it to handle things like latency and input delay.
Yeah sometimes people say it has so little that it’s not noticeable and some people say it has lots of latency. I’m just saying if I experience too much and it’s noticeable I’m getting a refund. I can’t do latency. It’s why I hate remote play on pc, iPhone, iPad, android, and Mac.
I’m refunding also and giving the g cloud a try. The stutters are very noticeable and a deal breaker for me. Seems like psplay or chiaki are a better remote play experience which is a shame.
I’m returning mine too. It won’t hold a connection and my internet works just fine. I really wanted to love this device but I just keep having to go back to playing on my tv so it’s pointless to keep.

I really like the look of this as a truck driver using the PS five in my truck. This offers me a little bit more mobility. By sitting in the driver seat while having a meal, and sitting in back but not having to stay focused on a set monitor able to move just to watch a movie or play a quick Game. I’ll just have to see the strength of my Apple hotspot and see how good it works but I’m a big fan of PlayStation and I love to support Sony this is more meaningful to me than The VR2……. I can see kids rocking these in cars for a long road trip maybe welll have to wait and see…… thanx Mystic

I just left jury selection. I saw a Playstation Portal, so obviously had to sit next to the dude. But i could not believe how well it worked. The screen was beautiful And felt well built. He was playing Call of Duty off of the hotspot on his phone. The game looked great to my eyes. While he said he could feel the lag. I was still impressed that he got 10 kills in a multiplayer match. Long story short, I became a believer.
But i realized that SM2 disk isn’t in the PS5. So i couldn’t play a game i own even if i could have wanted to. One more push to All Digital😞 so idk

I have the portal. It's just okay. I am planning on sending it back. It lives & dies off internet connectivity. And even with that, it still leaves a lot to be desired. Although I love the build, and overall, I wanted to like it. But with its limitations (no cloud gaming currently, no bluetooth, disconnection issues on a great wifi connection), I can see many returning and passing on it as well. All of this I knew going in but had to try it for myself to see if I'd like it. The cons outweigh the pros. Maybe on the next iteration. But this one just isn't it.
So glad this thing has airplane mode. Sometimes I might wanna use it without being connected to the internet, to do stuff like... uh...

Well modern airplanes obviously have WiFi, the issue with the portal is apparently you can’t accept the terms and conditions to actually connect lol

Thanks for the video Ryan but I can't find an answer to my question anywhere.
On PSVita era we were able to check an option on PS4 to remote play directly on handheld console, therefore all you needed was a local internet connection to connect both consoles to the wifi and there was no need for a high speed connection since it was being streamed directly instead of being streamed from Sony servers.
Is this option available on PlayStation Portal?
I hope Sony uses this as a soft launch for a hybrid for their next console. PS6. Same ole console we love but having a portable device with native play.

Nintendo were in that position because the Wii U was so far behind the PS4/XBOX One that they would have had to seriously cheap out for the Switch to not have any advancements over it at all.
You're not even getting a 10 TFLOPs handheld that is small and efficient enough for that Graphical power they're chasing let alone 20 TFLOPs. They've embraced Home consoles and that's their strong point.
Although if they want to transition into a future where they're less dependent on selling consoles, they should invest into making a real PlayStation Ecosystem on PC, be it via windows with their own client for native games or maybe even a PlayStation OS that can compete in gaming with Windows or utilise a Linux Distro.
This thing is going to become obsolete so fast.

I got it. The screen is nice for being an lcd. You can really tell it’s not oled in dark rooms , but for the most part it looks really good and it’s 1080p. I wish the joysticks were bigger, but I just took joystick covers from my switch and those fit. The battery lasts a long time since it’s not running the game on the device itself just streaming it. I think it was worth it. It is nice to play anywhere in the house. I haven’t tried it outside of my house. But when playing it at home it works very well and I haven’t had any issues with lag or communication issues. Just wish they would have put an oled in even if it raised the price.
It also looks better if you don’t run it at full brightness. It looks washed out at full brightness.

No it does not, as long as your ps5 is in rest mode and connected you can play from any internet connection anywhere as long as its good enough.@@Smallahz

You can use your wireless headset from your PS5 by changing the sound output on your console when connected to the Portal
PS Play with my iPhone in the exact same spot as my Portal is noticeably more responsive. Hoping they can update sooner than later.
Been loving mine, playing PS5 in bed while the PS5 is in the other room is literally a game changer.

We've been able to do remote play since the ps3 days using our psp's. This is nothing new.
