For years now, people have asked me to cover bootleg merchandise. Whether it be figures, plushes, and I've finally done it! An Extensive Look At Bootleg Sonic The Hedgehog Toys & Merchandise ! Extensive being a pretty fitting term, given this video is nearly 40 minutes long. I knew a topic like this would make for a huge video, and yet there's still so much I didn't cover! With that said, I tried to make this video into an overview of bootleg Sonic merchandise. Bootleg merchandise has always been fascinating to me, and while I do not recommend you support it, it is really interesting to look into. This video took weeks of writing, preparing and editing, but I am beyond happy with the results! This is one of my favorite videos I've done, I was able to cover so much in it! With that said, if you enjoyed this video, consider supporting it! Be it liking the video, subscribing to my channel, following me on Twitter or even supporting me on Patreon! Share this video with all of your bootleg-loving friends that I'm sure you have, or post about it elsewhere. Anything you can do would help me out a ton. Thanks! I hope you all enjoy this video as much as I did making it! Enjoy the video!
I miss the days when the suspected Resaurus fakes were the only sketchy things you'd find in an ebay search. I know a lot of these bootlegs are wacky but I hate how things like the Kid Galaxy bootlegs really took off.
yea i found snoot boy here on Brazil, tho, he was quite expensive for a bootleg, he was being sold as if he was official, lmfao, pretty sure they didn't know it was a bootleg and sold it without checking it out
I remember going to Cuba once they we're selling 200 pesos which is quite expensive (i think) a sonic console. It was called "Sonic wii" it was like an old CD reader in blue with a shitty dvd you can get at your local stolen movie drugstore. Uglyness in a box
I have a friend who actually knows where the Harry Potter Obama Sonic backpack originates from. It's somewhere in India, however, it has been replaced by other knockoffs.
The funny thing about the fake Sonic X Silver plush is that Silver probably would have appeared in the anime had it not ended when it did. The final episode of Sonic X aired on April 18, 2005, while Sonic 06 was first announced at E3 during May 18-20, 2005, pretty much exactly one month later. Because of how close they were, the bootleggers who made the Silver plush probably assumed that he DID appear in the anime and bootlegged him accordingly.
I swear to God I actually saw a bootleg Obama Sonic back pack at a flee market near the Cape Town CBD in Southern Africa back in 2008-2009. I think it was near the city hall or Greenmarket Square, lots of bootlegged stuff still gets sold at the stalls there, even to this day.

Around the early 2000s, we grew up consuming video games in an increasing market. Nevertheless, formal official merchandise was very scarce and what was found lacked any variety. It was also very expensive. Now, the funny thing is how the market took advantage of the fact that the United States had a wider and easily accessible collection. A lot of families I knew would often visit the States and stock up on official merchandise. They would then distribute those to other family members to sell at malls and plazas, but most importantly, mercados. After a while bootlegging derived from those originals became the norm. From helium balloons to backpacks, to piñatas, figurines, toys, Trading Cards, pencil cases (a surprisingly high amount so that "papelerías" would be stacked with low-quality plastic boxes with prints of Yu-Gi-Oh! and Dora the Explorer together) tazos (I think they are called "pogs"[?]; these little plastic discs found in bags of crisps), the mercado would often showcase an amazing sight of every weird crossover you could ever imagine. It is very cool and a rather striking showcase of the power of popular media and its natural connection to consumption. Kudos for the awesome investigation backing up these.

14:45 “Hopefully, we just end up getting more official LEGO Sonic sets someday” Four years later, we got a LEGO Ideas Green Hill Zone set, and the following year, a new theme of LEGO Sonic sets has dawned
I'd honestly buy a bootleg, as long as it's original. SA1 Shadow & Dark Sonic are good examples! In fact, I'm glad I got my Toadsworth, even if he isn't official.
There's another option when it comes to products out of China. You have so called 3rd Shift Product runs which are basically when the factory stays open after the 2 normal shifts have finished (Morning & Afternoon) and the Night Shift (3rd) runs all night making Grey products using all the official product molds etc. These are some of the hardest knockoffs to spot as technically there are zero differences just the fact the main company doesn't realise that days 50k of product was actually 75k and the extra 25k went out the back door to the local markets and bootleg sellers.
I own a red Sonic plush, a literal recolor to look like Knuckles. Those bootlegs are so common here in Brazil you just find them in gift stores. I used to pass this one by everyday on my way to school, and a while back I got one as a gift. I even took it to see Sonic 2. Good memories, really.
5:00 I actually have experience with sonic bootlegs before. When I was a kid, about every month I’d get lucky and sonic toys from jazwares. Luckily, I got one of the last Sets of the official figures for the 20TH anniversary in the store. Around the same time I got my sonic first 4 figures, my friend around the same age also liked sonic. Him and his older brother were into sonic. My friend had the bootleg versions of what I had, with the peach nose, grey metal sonic, and a WEIRD looking tails, and the others. Him and I always wondered why they looked different, but I thought “I think it’s a bootleg, I think.” My friends older brother also had a shadow plush that look really strange. That one I’m not 100% sure is a bootleg, but from what I know, he got it from an arcade claw machine, around the time SA2 came out(sounds real, but it looks really bad). It has almost side ways eyes and was about 2’ 3-9” tall, and was poorly made. It’s probs official, just really badly made but idk. The last thing I know of bootlegs in my area Is that my mall had a L O T of basic cheap merch of Sonic stuff, like the mystery ball sonic racing pull back toys, and a watch. However, the one that was definitely fake were a smooth rubber key chain. It was shown in the beginning of the video. The store in the mall had a classic super sonic, Amy, tails, and I think maybe knuckles. The funny thing about that store had a LOT of bootleg merch for other things too, like dragon ball z(some of it I own, because I didn’t know it was a bootleg at the time), Pokémon, One piece, and a couple of other brands. I’ll update this comment and add more history of bootlegs in my area if this comment gets popular somewhere in the future!👌

Recently, for fourth of July, my family went to Orlando to see the fireworks there, and we came across a Disney gift shop. My brother and I actually found these sonic blind bags labeled, "Sonic Generations" and the packaging featured a red sonic and dark sonic. My mom's friends actually bought one of the figures for their son, and the super sonic figure he got actually had a pretty good sculpt. The paint job, however, wasn't as decent. We also found a bunch of other bootlegs there, but yeah, that's my experience with bootleg sonic merch.
I think I can clear up some mystery of the Bootleg Sonic Obama Harry Potter backpack. First, you already stated, Harry Potter is a popular series to make bootleg products of. Second, the reference to Obama, I could only assume that, since Obama was the president when this was most likely made, they were just trying to put a recognizable name on their backpack. Third, Sonic is colored off of Gryffindor, which is Red and Yellow. the 10 on his chest is Harry Potter’s number on his Quidditch Uniform. The green shadow in Sonic’s art might be to go with the roses and simulate grass. Four, the clip art of the Roses, this is most likely just to fill space. Lame I know but that’s just the best I can make. Hope this helps!
I love how he says there are no Mario or sonic sets and 5 years later both are extremely popular LEGO lines and they have almost all the characters people want
How about a movie where the *Sense of Right Alliance* fights off all bad bootlegs with the good bootlegs, including Robert Cop, Pikachu Spongebob, and 7 Grand Dad! The bad bootlegs are taking over the world with their leader being Video Brinquedo. So now the Alliance, along with Robert Cop, Pikachu Spongebob and 7 Grand Dad, have to stop Video Brinquedo and the bad bootlegs from taking over the world!
Everytime I come back to this video, Snoot Boy just gets me laughing uncontrollably. The video is really nice and informative, and has a lot of funny moments, but I swear, as soon as Snoot Boy shows up I just lose my shit. lol
Same here, my guy. "AND I (BEEP) YOU NOT, HE TURNS INTO A FLAT DUDE! (something like that, I guess, idk) CALLS HIMSELF "SNOOT BOY". FUNNIEST (BEEP) I'VE EVER SEEN!"
I have the snoot boy and i even have the shadow snoot boy and the red snoot boy so i have the ULTIMATE collection of snoot boys edit: oh and i also have SUPER SNOOT BOY aka the yellow snoot boy (yes i got these legendary toys unironicaly because my child brain tought snoot boy was an official sonic toy and i still have them)
While this isn't sonic-related, there is a flea market in Los Angeles that has sold a bunch of bootleg plushes, figurines, and even costumes. My father and I bought a bootleg copy of Super Mario Brothers, thinking that we would experience a blast of the past with such a bootleg copy (I was 9 at the time, so I fell for it quick). When we brought it home, it barely worked on my LED TV (it had a HDMI port!) Worse, the selection of titles didn't include a single version of the original Mario game. While I don't have it anymore, I can't quit remembering the disappointment of my father's face when the thing he bought didn't succumb to his expectations. To make this story have a happy ending, I ended up buying him an original NES for his birthday last year, and he couldn't be happier to experience his childhood memories from way back then.
A recreation of something from DeviantART, because of course it is. Seriously, I know where that's from. It's from an artist called PlushDragon, from a so-called Rougification caption called (urgh) Sonic the Sugarbabe. The image seems to be remade instead of just a straight copy, and they just coloured the boots red; they're white in the original picture. I'd take the time to mention that not everyone on DA is like this, despite what the people say, and there many nice, polite, decent artists on the site...but it doesn't matter when something like that exists to paint the entire fanbase anyway. Oh, and speaking of stolen art, that tiny cyan hedgehog in the top left shirt is called Monty, I think. He's someone's fan-made nephew of Sonic. And obviously the top one is someone's OC. So that's all stolen too.
I've got myself a bootleg version of the Sonic OVA, with the cover having stolen poorly colored art from Sonic Advance series, and a typo that reads "Crape your knuckles." The DVD itself is of the Japanese version of the OVA, but will only play the movie for five minutes before crashing every time without fail. Definitely the funny black sheep of my Sonic collection. Edit: Ask and ye shall receive, behold! i.ibb.co/SmVzdTR/crapeyourknuckles.jpg
I once asked my dad for a Sonic action figure, and he got me bootleg figures. I only have knuckles and tails, but tails had blue rings around his gloves, super Sonic's nose broke off, and Sonic's nose wasn't painted
Every time I go to a Mexican market I see the most bootleg goofy ahh Mario and sonic piñata’s and I always have to contain myself from busting out laughing from it
I'm a custom plush maker most of the times I take underrated sonic artworks and base the plush after it like I am getting ready to make a sonic plush based off of a shirt that has sonic drinking coffe and says gotta go fast.
I remember going to Mexico last year and found all sorts of bootleg things but the most memorable was I found a hat that said sonic mania on it but it had a picture of Amy which looked like the stock art from around sonic adventure. In hindsight I should’ve bought it. Bootlegs are interesting and have a soft spot in me about them.
I never thought I'd be excited about seeing a 40 minute video on bootleg merchandise, but here I am. PatMac is the king of "I didn't know I wanted to learn about this until now"
Patmac, help me out. About 10 or 11 years ago, when I was a kid, I went to a local independent toy store and picked up these 4 really weird Sonic figures that I've never seen reference to since, have since MEGA lost, and have always wondered as to whether or not they were bootlegs (they probably were). The figures were pretty much "cyber" robot versions of Sonic, Tails, Shadow, and Knuckles. Their bodies were made of really hard plastic and resembled robotic samurai armor, with big shoulders and armor details. The heads on the Sonic and Shadow figures were made of a soft, hollow rubber that could be easily dented in, but the heads of the Tails and Knuckles figures were made of the same hard plastic as the bodies. They all had weapons (like spears and swords and stuff), and I remember the Sonic figure had LED's that lit up his weapon. I also remember them being fragile as shit. The tip of the Knuckles figure's weapon broke off almost immediately, and the Sonic figure's arm came off at one point, and was filled with loose wires and cords for the LED. What I'm trying to ask is, have you ever seen any figures that resemble these? I've always been curious if I picked up some weird Sonic bootleg toys as a kid or if they were some obscure line or something (probably the former). Great video as always, I just wanted to ask this. More details: I remember that my parents bought me all 4 in one trip to the toy store when I was a kid (which isn't something they would have normally done because we didn't have a lot of money), so I'd imagine that they were incredibly cheap. Thinking about it more, I also remember the designs of the bodies, with how distinctly "robot samurai" they were, looking a lot like traditional Mega Man X designs (namely Zero) with Sonic heads stuck on. Again, any word on these from anyone would be appreciated. I've been curious for years.
Oh, it's not even 'slipping out'. iirc in China, most legit producers (e.g. Nintendo) are required to share their designs, patterns, schematics and such with the manufacturers, leading to those manufacturers turning around and using those to make bootlegs.
22:47 I remember having that Tails back pack, which I turned into a Tails Doll plush, which I have lost in the time, though I do have one picture of him, which I also can not find. But damn that brings me memories..
Very recently I found a couple of karts at the mall that had a LOT of bootleg Sonic stuff. A whole bunch of the Adventure plushes with an Amy Rose and Silver the Hedgehog I had never seen before, one I swear had Big the Cat, backpacks of Shadow with the word Sonic embroidered in the corner that came in red yellow and black (not blue) it was a sight to behold. It's kinda surreal to see bootleg karts with Sonics again. I was sure the amonguses would have a bit more staying power.
19:17 I am ashamed to admit that I just realized that I currently have that Sonic version bootleg one in my room...I always thought this plush look weird but now I know. Damn shame on me for trying to buy something cheap instead of the official one.
im glad you said not everything bootleg comes from china/overseas. i buy a lot of merchandise than happens to come from hong kong and so far nothing has been bootleg. (maybe thats bc i think i have a pretty decent eye and check what im buying) i saw a bootleg baby toy right here in america being sold. no one place makes and sells bootlegs. and bootlegs arent always bad either.
I have a bootleg Nack/Fang plush from ebay. You know, it may be bootleg but it serves its purpose for display and is still very hard to find, bootleg or real.
“There are no official Lego Mario sets.” Man, it feels good to come back here and say that this is no longer the case. Awesome video, by the way! Lego Sonic would be cool!
@@LovelyYT Are you trying to troll me? I can perfectly speak Polish because I'm from Poland so I translated the text without any issue. I know that's not *originally* a dragon but that's just a bootleg on a pickle jar. They redesigned Sonic a bit so he looks somewhat of a dragon. I will once again say: it is written on the package that this is a dragon. Why am I even arguing about obvious stuff. If you are trolling and want to put me on r/woooosh or something else or you just don't understand that is a bootleg Sonic then get some help and don't argue with me.
There’s this line of bootleg NECA TMNT action figures that are so high quality, that people actually believe they’re an example of this.
I’ll update this comment and add more history of bootlegs in my area if this comment gets popular somewhere in the future!👌
.
My brother had that shadow plush
Yo i have almost all of the botlegs😂

FUN FACT:

I wouldn't be surprised if a bootlegger actually stole this and put it on the package of bootlegs.
Amazing
A++++++++++++++++
Recently, for fourth of July, my family went to Orlando to see the fireworks there, and we came across a Disney gift shop.

Oof This makes me cringe sooo much....
Now that is epic

I never thought I'd be excited about seeing a 40 minute video on bootleg merchandise, but here I am. PatMac is the king of "I didn't know I wanted to learn about this until now"
I know,right?
