4 CANCELLED Sonic The Hedgehog Movies (Lost Sonic Film Adaptations)

- Paramount Pictures' Sonic The Hedgehog is set to dash into theaters soon, but did you know this was not the first attempt at a Sonic movie?
There have actually been quite a few attempts at a Sonic movie prior to Paramount's current project. As far back as 1993, Sonic movies have been put into production, only to be cancelled. In this video, we discuss a bizarre live action/CGI 90s Sonic movie pitch named "Sonic The Hedgehog: Wonders of The World", an Archie Sonic movie called "Sonic Armageddon", the potential continuation of the Sonic OVA anime series that never happened, as well as Sony's Sonic The Hedgehog, which would technically be cancelled now that Paramount has taken over the project from Sony.

Well, we finally got a theatrical film for Sonic.
At first it was the laughing stock of the entire internet...
Then everyone raised a bit of hope after the redesign...
Now the film has broken box office records and became one of the highest-ranking video game adaptations.
And given what year this is, it might even be among the year's biggest blockbusters. How neat is that?! :D

Ken PEnders is absolutely and completely clueless when it comes to writing. He sees himself as bigger than he really is and seems to feel entitled to mooching off the success of the series. You should see some of the stuff on tumblr people have posted of the guy, along with the various comics that were made while he was writing them, it really shows how deluded he was a writer.
No joke, he used a poem that was meant to highlight the holocaust (First they came...) and replaced it with various fur races on Mobius. It was that tasteless.
There was a really odd movie I used to watch as a kid called Pinocchio 3000. The first movie you talked about actually had a very similar plot! In the Pinocchio movie kids went to an amusement park but when they rode the rides they turned into evil robots
So I guess if you want to see a taste of what Sonic the Hedgehog Wonders of the World could have been like try watching Pinocchio 3000 as dumb as it is haha

I loved the Archiecomics, and laboriously tracked down early copies aside from the coveted bizarre issue nine. Amazes me that the comic was still going for so long, even taking the title of longest "technically non-rebooted series" and I was so used to seeing Ken Penders on the inner splash page. *pouts* I LOVED Sonic the Hedgehog, it kept me alive through chronic illness, the rare thrill of renting out a Sega CD for Sonic CD, by far my favourite with debug code...
:( :( This... makes me sad and happy. I remember calling in trying to figure out how to kill Ruby Weapon (FF7) and asking about Sonic and his place in Sega's plans... Hell, imho, one of the problems with the infamous movie design (as seen in the Gangster's Paradise trailer) is that it kind of resembled Penders's art style.
Thank God they fixed it, the change is subtle but it makes an immediately noticeable difference.

A SatAM Movie like the scraped game project are lost potential and a hole in my fan heart. BTW SatAM game would have been a great RPG Game.

The concept of Detective Pikachu's story isn't verybinterestong, but the execution of it results it to have clever writing as well as adorably realistic Pokémon animation by staying true to the official Pokémon design yet surprising us with how it translates into live-action by actually feeling fresh and smooth.
Blame the fact that alvin and chipmunks did well. A faithful smurfs movie was cancelled in favor of the cgi/live action we ended up getting
I feel like they use live action hybrids because it's a more safe bet that more casuals will see whatever franchise they grew up with etc., since they'll take it more seriously because it's "more adult " while still giving them that bit of nostalgia since they know the characters. It kind of makes sense when you look at the first Transformers movie back in the 80's. Like if I was a parent taking my kid and I knew the bare minimum about Transformers, I'd have zero idea what was going on or why Optimus Prime's death is making my kid cry. Fast Forward to the mid 2000's, if I was an adult that knew the bare minimum about Transformers and I heard they had a live action version with prolific actors, I'd be more likely to want to see it. Now of course they butchered the source material, but if I didn't know anything about the series, I would just take it at face value and use the movie as my logic, instead of watching cartoons, anime, reading comics, and playing video games to understand the world.
That transition from Sonic the Hedgehog: Wonders of the World to Sonic Armageddon was so jarring, I just blurted out *"WHAT!?"*

My god, your little mock-up of Sonic: Wonders of the World was amazing, I would’ve loved to watch that, it sounds like it would’ve been a beautifully cheesy film that would be beloved today. It definitely could’ve used some improvements and changes, but for a first draft it was incredible. I got the end of the story and felt like I’d been on an adventure, especially with your mock up images. It was beautifully well down and perfectly captured the cheesy atmosphere.

Yeah, surely, Archie Comics tried to do good episodes with Sonic the Hedgehog the whole time, but the reason why there were more bad Archie Sonic strips than good ones since the Dreamcast Era (Sonic & Tails: Friends No More being a thing, for example) was because Ken Penders was in the control of most of them to make its characters like Amy Rose, Sally Acorn, the rest of the Freedom Fighters, Sonic the Hedgehog, Dr. Eggman, Team Hooligan, the Babylon Rogues Rouge the Bat, et cetera et cetera either predictable tropes or worse, homophobic stereotypes! From the same crew that gave us Mega Man comics, Archie Meets Glee, Lil' Jinx, and Pat the Brat, you're welcome!

I love Sonic's uncle Chuck. The internal struggle between himself, and his robotocized side was always cool to me. I stopped following the archie comics after issue 100 or so. So I'm not sure if Chuck ever came out the other side. If anyone knows, I would appreciate it if you could leave me a reply. Thanks for reading :)

over half of his designs and stories he did for archie were stolen from other people, but when bioware had a slightly similar idea to him he tried to sue them and somehow won making echidna stories basically impossible to do now

@Blue Moon Candy Heart's I loved the old school cartoon as a kid and enjoyed Sally as a character there as well, but because of who they made her to be and because of who Amy is, I dont think they should exist in the same universe. it would just make the game have a heavy feeling and slight foul taste...I guess its easier for me to accept that since I absolutely love Amy Rose. I'm also glad Sega put their foot down. crazy that there are people out there who are willing to ruin sonic for everyone. I still would have liked to get a conclusion to the old cartoon though.

"Sonic: Armageddon (2002)" might look like a dark film, but I would have loved to see this one made.
It would be a nice continuation from Sonic SatAM and hopefully show us how Sonic was able to save Sally and de-robotize her. I would also like to know if we were also supposed to meet Sonic's parents in this film too since they appear in the concept art.
Sonic Wonders of the World really reminds me of the Megaman OVA Upon A Star, even down to both characters leaving their games and jumping into the real world
Sonic: Wonders of the World sounded like a really bad movie, honestly. I hate movies that have kids as a relateable character, even when I was a kid. If you want to watch a Sonic movie, you want to see Sonic.

I still don't get why Paramount or Sony had to handle the Sonic movie, when SEGA had Marza. They don't really need outside help when they have an animation studio that gave us those Unleashed animations. I'm looking forward to how much they'll change Sonic's design for the Paramount one though, maybe it might be fun once Sonic stops looking so terrible...
Paramount and Sony are film produces that actually put out and handle movies while Marza is just an animation studio that animates films and is actually doing so for the sonic movie I believe (either that or it’s Blue studios handling it).

So I don't think anything could stop them from making their own movie without outside help. Just hire a competent Sonic writer, of course...

Seeing PatMac's Best Case Scenario with Sonic Movie, it puts a smile in my face. Sonic The Hedgehog 2 is coming in a few months, and Paramount confirming Sonic Movie 3 with a Sonic/Knuckles Paramount+ show. We are living in the best timeline
What a mix-up. Sony in 2014 at that time had both rights for Mario (due to a hack), and Sonic (according to a rumor). But Paramount Pictures snatched the Sonic films rights to make Sonic the Hedgehog (2020) & Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022) with the upcoming Knuckles show for Paramount+, and Universal & Illumination snatched the Mario film rights to make a successful & phenomenal The Super Mario Bros. Movie, eventually some more Nintendo spin-off movies that Nintendo & Illumination wants to make in the future. It's like... what is going on with the video game film development?
