- There's nothing quite like movie theaters. Going to the movies is always such a great experience. The atmosphere, the concessions, and of course, the movie displays! Whenever a movie is released in theaters, companies produce tons of extra material made to promote the films. Posters, standees, statues, and even publicity stunts are just some of the creative forms these can take.
There is a lot more to the release of a movie than the film itself. Lots of promo items and material is prepared and released to help boost the movie's chances of being a success. Almost any film you can think of has its own material. Alvin & The Chipmunks, Kung Fu Panda, Sonic The Hedgehog, Spider-Man, The Smurfs, and much more!
In this video, I talk about movie promotional items, statues, tie-ins, a marketing stunt gone horribly wrong, and more! Do you remember the time 7-Eleven became the Kwik-E-Mart for The Simpsons Movie? Or the time a Cartoon Network movie sent an entire city into panic? All of this and more is discussed in today's video. Let's take a look at some of the most fascinating pieces of promotion from some of our favorite movies!

When I went to see sonic, I had a blast and the audience made it better. When sonic was showing his worn down and hole-filled socks, someone in the back yelled “YEAH SONIC FEET” and I will never forget that experience

Day 100: So... Here we are. Day 100. I really have no clue where to start with this one. I really only did this cause when I started, I assumed he would have been back within a few weeks. 1:31 That Mike Wazoski statue has been chilling at the Shriner's Hospital I used to go to for decades! Never knew it was a promotional thing for the movie. You'd always pass by it when you go to the cafeteria and I'd always give it a high five lol. Thanks for jogging my memory of that!

The old hospital I used to go to moved locations and remodeled into a more modern aesthetic so I don't think they have it either (as far as I can tell, I phased out when I became an adult). Plus, the poor thing was getting kinda old and his eye was yellowing. I wonder where it is now!

I can't believe you talked about Shrek without mentioning the ever elusive Shrek CRT tv. It's so mythical and sought after.
I remember seeing one of the Ice Age movies with my daycare group, where we were handed some Ice Age cup toppers (I think) in the lobby, where one of the kids body slammed another one to get his Sid figure.

That was literally an episode. In an (I wanna say season 5) episode where a food critic complimented Spongebob so Mr. Krabs turned the "Krusty Krab" into the "Krusty Sponge" and had everything Songebob themed.

Aqua Teen Hunger Force’s marketing stunt is such a funny one in my opinion. While it did a LOT of risk to Warner Bros, it was still a cool idea.

I never played them because I knew that the prizes were hard to get due to the quality they usually had. Though never played one
Last year I went into a dollar store and they had a bin full of tiny Shrek plushes from the 3rd or 4th movie. Over 10 years old and still new in the store, it was surreal and I definitely bought one.
Also I don't know if it was the 7/11 one but I remember years ago someone won a contest to have their character added to The Simpsons. There was an article making a big deal about how the winner worked with the show writers to make an interesting character and design, and said he would be in an episode that season. I totally forgot about it until I was watching years later and that character is introduced, says maybe 3 sentences, and crashes his car off a cliff in under a minute. That had to have been embarrassing for the contest winner.
Shrek is NOT a very marketable character with an appealing design. So you gotta respect HARD companies tried to make him marketable.

As a Movie Theater employee. I can say that 90% of the movie theater promotional stuff goes to employees. One of my employees got scooby and I have all the star wars imax posters that we got. Unfortunately the Sonic Cardboard standee was too big and did indeed get trashed. My roommates said no to getting to keep it 😥

I went to see Sonic the premiere day as a birthday gift (Yes, my birthday is in Saint Valentines Day) and saw a bunch of little kids go with their Sonic merch. It warmed my heart, and reminded me of my childhood obsession with Toy Story. The post-credits scene was great, so great indeed, a lady screamed like she got stabbed when she saw Tails.

The Sonic Movie was also one of my greatest theater experiences ever, I went with a group of my friends on opening night and we all had a ton of fun. The theaters reaction to the after credits scene was bigger than the opening night crowds reactions to anything in Avengers Endgame. After the movie we played games in the movie theater arcade for a while and it was a ton of fun.

Funnily enough when I went to see Sonic 2 in 2022, the movie theater it was at still had Sponge on the Run popcorn buckets and soda figure things, so while you were watching the movie you'd just see all this SpongeBob stuff in the audience lol
Crazy at it is, most of the props and items for the recent "released" movies might be as well part of the lost media, mostly because we haven't seen half of the promotional items produced due to not being able to go out to the theaters (well in some part of the world) and some of the companies do not release this kind of stuff so easily on the internet, i know that we might see them sooner or later but as it is now... it's going to be a long time to see the goodies that they made for those movies
I remember when the second "Alvin and the Chipmunks" movie came out. I was, maybe, eight at the time? But regardless, I still have a picture somewhere of my younger brother and I posting next to those Chipmunks statues in the lobby of our Showcase Cinema! Although since it was winter, the people who work at the theater put scarves around the statues.
I remember going to a theater to watch that and there was 4 people leaving 10 minutes in, one mom didn't smile at once, that's how you disappoint a audience

Here's a fun fact: There's a small bakery in Buenos Aires that has the Bart statue just sitting in a chair in the middle of the place. It looks EXACTLY the same, so it must be one of those.

One of the theaters I love going to still have those Alvin and the Chipmunks statues on display. I don’t know why they’ve never decided to take them down but at the same time it’s very neat they’re still there ever since the first movie came out.
In the neighborhood where I live in there was a house on the other side of the area that had an Alvin statue that was seriously sun tanned. On that same area there was a house where the back yard had a Lisa Statue and an unrelated M&M statue ( it had holes so it was most likely a display), I don't know if they still have them because these days I don't really pass that area anymore.
I wish I could get thoses statue things, but I did beg a Walmart for the Tom Nook giant cardboard cutout aaaand its mine

I got the Zootopia movie poster used by the mall's cinema. I worked at the mall and every night before going home I'd be throwing the trash. At the garbage disposal, I saw a box of rolled up posters and among them was the Zootopia poster. So, I snagged it.

I had the pleasure of seeing some of those Alvin and the Chipmunks statues in the Tanger Outlets in Conecticut, which is attached to a huge casino. The shop that had them carried tons of memorabilia like that including lots of original cartoon cels, but the giant Alvin they have outside their door is absolutely the crowning jewel of the establishment

A lot of people are asking where Pat went. Here's a trick for you. Switch from top comments to newest first and scroll down to around a month ago (or however long December 2020 was from when you're reading this.) There's a comment that PatMac himself replied to stating he'll be taking more time for future uploads to ensure higher quality.
Seven months is bit of a long wait sure, especially considering this is the guy who normally uploads every month, but if it means better quality then it should be, as a wise man from Valve once said, worth the wait. For now, we wait.

Day 179: In case anyone is wondering, a bunch of factory stock of the tomy 25th anniversary sonic, tails, eggman, and jumbo sonic plushies have been being sold on ebay and stuff for like 20 bucks recently. These guys go for 70-100 bucks usually so if you missed them now's your chance. I have personally bought the jumbo sonic and eggman but I do intend getting sonic and tails

I Liked The Emoji Movie
About the shrek marketing bastardization subject, that reminds me a lot about evangelion, the anime franchise about depression, gods and overall a pretty heavy series to get into for a lot of people, and yet it is one of the most marketed old mecha series not only in japan but across the world as well what's ironic it's that while in the original evangelion anime everyone was miserable, the promotional artwork for eva products have the characters be happy, the joke it's that evangelion characters are more happy in products than in the actual show.
The relationship with shrek and eva runs deep, not directly but in what the original purpose and messages they had, shrek was a parody and middle finger to disney who was the king of entertainment in the early 90's making fun of how they bastardize fairy tales for profit and how predictable they can get.
Evangelion is a critique about the anime industry and otaku culture in japan from the 80's, the fetization of underage girls, the clunky and slow mechas like gundam replaced with the evas and essentially making a realistic version of the old mecha trope of a kid with a giant robot and making it more of a punishment than something fun.
That got thrown out completely out the window once evangelion became a marketing juggernaut eventually becoming the thing it was criticizing, just like shrek.

Day 121: After today, I'm going on vacation to Chicago!!! I haven't gone on vacation in years, and its some place new!!! Anyway to get my thoughts about the sonic central out of the way, I loved colors ultimate lol they seem to be doing a lot, considering pre ordering it. The origins collection is gonna have widescreen sonic 3 & knuckles so that justifies a purchase alone, unsure how to feel about the new sonic game. I wanna see more then just a (really gorgeous btw) cgi trailer with a funny symbol. I am hyped for it, but I'm just waiting to see more (oh yeah also it might be called sonic rangers which I find funny lol). Anyway yeah thats all lol

the arcade with the crash bandicoot was actually in my town! it was a cute little quarter arcade, very fun and cheap place to go for the day. sadly, the shell of the colorful building sits vacant :( i was so surprised to see that it shocked me! there was all sorts of fun stuff at that arcade. i believe it shut down because they weren’t paying their bills or something. not entirely sure. some sort of legal issue to do with money.
Anybody remember when airheads almost always had a promotional tie in with whatever movie and show was big at the time? Like superman returns and surfs up? Whatever happened to that?

PatMac mentioned how there used to be contests for The Simpsons Movie, and his explanation about them reminded me of something I remember so vividly. Back in 2009 when Coraline was getting ready to release in theaters or when it was already out at the time, they had a contest for the movie where you could take a picture of either yourself, your friends, or your family, maybe all of them as well, and you submit them to the guys running the contest, And if they picked your picture, they would make it look like they sewed buttons over your eyes and maybe let you share it with the world or something like that. Looking back on that day when I was approached by that contest offer, I think I totally regret not having a good picture of myself to send in just so I can see myself with button eyes so I can see how cool it would have looked. But I was only 9 years old at the time of the film's release, and after seeing what Coraline would have went through, I was scarred for life and honestly thought I was going to legitimately have buttons sewed over my eyes since it sounded so real. Biggest regret of my life, no lie

My brother used to work for Cinemark when he was in high school.
One of the perks was that he could keep the popcorn that they would throw away at the end of the bight. He would also get to bring home the occasional movie poster as well. The Phantom Menace 3D Movie Poster was one of the ones he took home.
The one about machines having old stalk is diffently true since months ago at my local grocery store I found an Angry Birds Star Wars Red plush and yes I did won it and was so mind blowed, happy, and excited lol

I am a manager at a theater I had to destroy that huge sponge bob standie. I also have like 2 massive boxes of the trolls world tour cups and toppers, so at least snapco got there money.

@Marco Zepeda I could get in trouble potentially but its unlikely. Like I could take it sure but it was like 7 feet tall and 7 feet wide I couldn't get it home or display it at my little house so I pretty much had no option. I also couldn't take it apart without ruining it. This thing was huge. I keep small standees and posters all the time, if it was a statue and I didn't have to send it back I would keep it. If you ask theaters especially big theaters a lot of managers will give you posters or standees when the movie gets out of theaters. Things like the spongebob movie I got 8 posters so I gave some to my employees. Its really case by case. I have star wars I max posters black widow and wonder woman posters ect.
If you’re able to, sell the trolls cups/toppers. Parents will go nuts over them.
Holy shit, my old neighbor had the Alvin statue ever since I moved in to my old home. It was sunbleached to shit, but then one day he painted it and I’m pretty sure he sold it because it disappeared a day after
The Super Mario bros. Movie’s marketing was INSANE, the Super Mario plumbing Super Bowl marketing stunt, recreating Mario’s boots, the Mario movie drone light show, tons of advertisements and so much more!
Fun fact: I found a few Duff energy drinks in a random 5-Below, just sitting there on the shelf
Also, my local "retro antique" store has the life sized statues of all of the Simpons in it. Goes to show that the marketing for that movie has stood the test of time in terms of longevity

Those Duff drinks are actually mass produced, you can find them at various candy stores. And Five Below, like every five below I’ve been to has them. Never even tried it yet lmao

And seeing you bring up the Nascar Shrek figures made me think it'd be a cool idea to make a video about film/game/show promotions in Nascar or other sports. Besides the Shrek franchise, Nascar also promoted stuff like Cartoon Network, Spongebob, TMNT, Toy Story 2 and 3, Cars 3, The Simpsons Movie, Looney Tunes, Muppets, Click, and even Passion of the Christ of all things.
I kid you not when I say I remember way more about the Shrek the third marketing more than I remember the film itself ( cause there's no way in hell ill forget those Shrek cheetos).

I remember that pre-mid 2000's a big theatre in the city near us had theming on the upper walls of old movies, and they had two huge statues hanging from the ceiling of the Enterprise, from the original Star Trek series, and Mighty Mouse for whatever reason. I wonder where they are now.
They also put a doughnut statue in every town named Springfield there was one in new Zealand that got hit by arson and vandalism

my parents and i collected ALL the simpsons movie burger king toys and still have them after over 10 years displayed on a wall in our house haha. they're actually pretty awesome toys
