I don't understand why directors think quick cut editing looks good for action scenes. It happens so often you can barely follow along with the martial arts moves being used.
It’s so they can cheat scenes without actually choreographing and executing good fight sequences. That’s part of what makes John Wick action scenes so good.
The best martial arts scene in the whole movie happened in the first, what, 5? 10 minutes? When Hanzo murders his way through Bi-Han's Lin Kuei. The rest of the martial arts in the film is largely disappointing, because it's overshadowed by the special effects superpowers. That's not to say I don't think some of the subsequent action scenes are entertaining...but from a martial arts' perspective, there's really very little of substance there.

My girlfriend was so disappointed with this movie, said she needed to write a letter expressing how disappointed she was...I was 3 beers in from minute one so I had a blast.

Lost of clearly missed opportunities to maximize screen time without being boring, they did not even need to cut anything as it was only 1 hour 50 minutes long, they could have added another 20 - 30 minutes in there on other characters backstories, shit would be awesome to see.

However, canonically - the story of "Mortal Kombat" prequel/reboot takes place around Mortal Kombat 10. They already referenced Mortal Kombat 9 ("9 tournaments").

MK has 90+ characters, and they decide to invent the most boring dude with the most unimaginative power to be the main character. Why? Shit, make Liu Kang the main character and have him go about recruiting people for the tournament before Sub assassinate them all. And that arcana crap. Why do you need to explain where they get their powers from. Cause how does this mystical crap explain how Jax's, Sonya's, and Kano's powers work. Their powers are more in line with technology than magic.
Honestly the best parts of the film for me was the beginning segment, Kano, the game references the movie makes, the final fight, Scorpion snd Sub Zero.

Haven't seen the film, but it's still probably not as bad as the Daemon X Machina BS Cassie pulled at the end of MKX. That was some of the worst plot-armor I've ever seen.
Kung Lao is underrated in this movie. even though he didn't get to talk as much as Kano, he was literally the most entertaining just through body language and cockiness.
I lost my shit when Liu Kang put his hand on Kano and said "There's much to learn" and Kano was like "the fuck?" I couldn't stop laughing at that part. That and the "no Harry Potter shit" line.

Yeah I had to rewind that and watch again because I thought something got cut out due to a buffering error. That part with jax's arms made no sense, lot of bad writing in this but I expected that.
he didnt know how to use his arms at first. then he tapped into the right software or O/S so to speak...and was able to use the full potential of the arms!!
The whole arcana thing was a superfluous waste of time. We don't need a non canonical mechanic which takes half an hour to flesh out just to justify why Liu Kang has fireballs.
They should’ve made the movie about scorpion and sub-zero because they have a lot of backstory and they fight each other countless of times. That alone could’ve made a better movie.

Something tells me that's when covid started to affect things beyond their control. I've noticed with a lot of material that has come out since the middle of 2020. Parts (usually the ending) are rushed wayyy to fast or just feel unfinsihed.

Yeah, they pretty much pulled a Resident Evil; made a new character strictly for the movie and sidelined the actual game characters. If they would have just taken Cole and made him Johnny Cage it would have been better. Still liked the movie but would have been better if Cole was Johnny.
Like in the games, he can't interfere without punishment from the Elder Gods. He even said it in the movie. Hopefully they will dive into that more if they ever bring in Shinnok

Beacuse Scorpion's the mascot, therefore Cole, the son of one of the most popular fighting game characters must automatically be loved by the fanbase. I think that's the logic the marketers and writers were going by.
You know what is funny? When Liu Kang was telling his backstory of how he met Raiden and how he got the mark I was like, I wish I could watch that movie instead of this.

In the decade of “EXTREME RATED R ACTION MOVIES!” Why they decided to make a movie based on the most violent video game of the time period rated “PG-13” is just beyond my comprehension. Well, like, I know why they did it, because they wanted kids to see it. But give me a break… Let’s be real here, kids would’ve watched it anyways. Even if it was rated X kids would’ve watched it. It was a stupid decision to make it rated PG-13 . Especially during an age when “political correctness“ was scoffed at.

I thought the young girl was Coles sister and the women tending his wounds in the beginning was just a girlfriend or something. I had no idea those women were his family until the middle of the movie...

Kano got a bit of a build up to waking up his power. He was getting angry. His anger worked as a catalyst and it happened. And by accident actually. Clearly telling us he can't control it just like that and needs to learn to. Cole? his family was in danger, and even tho it's cliche, it's still kind of world (Cassie Cage is under a similar situation in the last chapter of MKX, family and friends in danger, bad guy about to win and boom... got daddy's green stuff). I gotta admit tho, the fact that it gave him like an armor and then weapons... he meant to do that or does the arcana itself conveniently does things for the user? Now that I think of it, it wasnt that good neither. But Sonya was def the worst. All she did was to kill Kano. We see the mark on her skin... Next scene she shows up in, she's already shooting ring projectiles off her arms, as if she somehow knew exactly how to do it. And Jax... I mean, I don't plan to try to understand how the arcana would or should work at this point, but it literally gave him a tech enhancement upgrade. If it gave him metal skin(a mutation like that one X-Men character or the other guy from DC's Legends of Tomorrow) but that was just weird. Went Cyberpunk in a split second there. Idk. I honestly wish I could stop seeing all those things and just enjoy the movie for what it is. That's how much I have wanted a new MK movie and want sequels to for a legit MK universe... I also want it to be good tho. Yet this movie ain't exactly that.
I'm sure we can all agree Kabal looked AMAZING. And his dashing CGI looked legit. It could have easily looked horrible, but the special effects team did an amazing job. His costume was beautiful.
To be honest, this should be a two part. First is this with a lot of injuries and next is the actual MK tournament for the deathatch, tho a lot died already and MK is that quick fights making the next part a different generation or characters
It is whole start pf their story. Quan chi kills scropions family while looking like bi han. Skip to mortal kombat. Bi han is killed. Quan chi is revealed as the one who did this. Scorpion is now good and want to get his revenge (again). More interesting eould be movie about lin kuei being turned into roboninjas.

Hardcore fan here as well, felt like a spat in the face. “Like f you longtime MK fans, we are gonna make a movie that doesn’t really respect the main and OG characters and just add an OP Mary Sue guy who will be the main focus”. It’s just disappointing man. I’ve been waiting a long time for another acceptable MK movie but this one pissed me off. Was it enjoyable? Sure. Was it a laugh? Sure. Did I cheer on some scenes? Hell ya I did. BUT that doesn’t excuse it from being a bad MK movie. I wish real fans wrote the plot instead. Sheesh.
Is that a pro conservative jab? Personally I loved the movie. My biggest criticism was Raiden. I didn’t feel the guy embraced the character at all. Everything else for me was great. I have nitpicks, but other than that I loved the movie. I do wish that Reiko would have fallen onto the pit impaled on spikes after he was headless. And I do wish we had actually seen a small 10-15 second flashback actually SHOWING Bo Rai Cho training a young Liu Kang. I feel it would have allowed us to connect More with his character. Otherwise I truly loved the movie.
This was one of the parts that kinda bugged me. That and Jaxs arms. And why did Mileena grow fangs out of nowhere? She's a Tarkatan. She doesn't just grow fangs like a werewolf. But I was able to get past it because it's a movie.

Yeah, personally I thought the new character Cole was completely pointless and stupid. The director's reasoning for it is nonsense - Johnny Cage could have easily been the "audience character" who is discovering all this stuff for the first time. Cole is ridiculous.
They were really sneaky throwing in the “Eddie Tobias” reference towards the beginning of the movie. I’m sure the writers thought they were clever for that inclusion.
Which is good, it sets up for the actual Mortal Kombat and higher stakes for the characters. The film was not perfect but not bad. I am looking forward to the sequel.
The "arcana finding" part was just unnecessary. They could explain Cole getting his powers because Scorpion was his ancestor. Jax, Sonya and Kano powers could all be explained as technology, new gear they got to help on the kombat.
The whole Arcana was added just to give Cole his "awakening" moment with power up. The movie wasted so much portion of its run time unlocking their arcana it doesn't even feel like Mortal Kombat during that time. The whole training scene could have been the characters showing off their power & new high-tech gears to get ready for the fight instead of constantly searching for some inner power bs.
it was like they hired a team of people who were passionate about MK and the original movie, had them work on like 50% of the movie, then just winged the rest LOL
This movie is so weird. It’s like they didn’t know where to spend their budget. They clearly spent a big portion on the reptile special effects, but they could have easily made him more humanoid ninja looking (it’s my preference though, so maybe I’m biased) and used that budget to fix some of the ropey cg effects. Some look great, but others look so green screen.
What studio, if its the studio who made the movie then its still all their fault. More so the studio, and somehwhat his for not pushing back on the studio and cutting back on cole screen time. Its an collaborative effort. So they all is held accountable. The movie looks awful on an resume.
I've spent 1h50m watching this movie only heard GET OVER HERE once, that really let my heart broken especially when i realized that the movie was over without the tournament even started
This is a Warner Bros production. Guess who owns Mortal Kombat..... WARNER BROS! They didn't lease the IP for this film, they own it. That means they could have done anything they wanted, they could use the music, the characters, all of it and they chose not to. Hell, they have Ed Boone and all of Netherrealm ON THE PAYROLL! He's just a phone call away! It would be so easy to ask Ed and his team of writers to come up with a script for a Mortal Kombat film. They write a new 6 hour MK film every 4 years already so I'm sure they could do a 2 hour film pretty damn easily. This stuff is so easy and yet these studios just keep failing. It's laughable and enraging at how badly they mess simple things up.

So maybe when his arcana got unlocked & he get ice powers, things being revealed or something. Cole Young = direct son of Scorpion/Hanzo. Same premise of got stranded on earth & losing memories. Cole Young = Johnny Cage. being revealed at the end of movie or something with Cole making a new name, new identity, etc Cole Young = tremor. Probably becaus of some of the leak-ish footage of Cole engulfed with magic (earthly) armor. Maybe turn into the dark side in the end instead for an interesting twist. Cole Young = Rain. A twist that reveal of cole being Rain, the fiancee of Kitana who thought to be dead years ago by Shao Khan. Turn into antagonist who strife for power, "enemy of my enemy is my friend" type of thing.

@@familyfirstnation4605 Totally agree. Nothing had any room to breathe and each "fight" seemed so incredibly short. They could have cut Cole out, made either Sonya, Jax, Liu Kang or Kung Lao the main character(s) and added in longer better fights that actually feel like a progression for these characters. Personally I would have gone with Sonya as the main character and have her fill in Jax as the audience character - who she has been keeping the secret of Mortal Kombat from. Her relationship with Kano, and Kano in general, are one of the few good things in this movie. It should have felt like a huge payoff when she finally took the mark from Kano but it just ends up lost in the sauce. Making Sonya the main character would also make an ending teaser about Johnny Cage that much better, because we in the audience know how that relationship plays out.
Well, if they had focused on 5-6 characters that are the major one instead of 20 they could have established a decent lore. They just keep adding and adding more characters during the movie that you couldn't manage it all in 90mins. Kabal had 2 mins of screentime.
Only his transformation got aborted halfway, and he's just bumbling around like an idiot and his armor is reversed, getting stronger the more times he screws up and gets his ass beat.
This, some of the pandering to the fans was cringe. I get some pandering, or stuff fans will get. Actually the sweep kick done to Kano was pretty funny, and it's something that anybody who played the games would get. I'm a MK video game fan myself, but that moment of "GET OVER HERE" with scorpion in particular was so jarring and just took you out of the film. At least he should have shouted that in Japanese and it would have been fitting and a nice twist on what people expect. Also the serious disciplined Liu Kang just saying "Fatality" like the announcer in the game. Liu Kang who is supposed to be this devout disciplined Shaolin monk boasting "fatality" really? Just came off as out of place and lame. I enjoyed quite allot in different parts of the movie, and I will gladly go see a sequel, but they need to change direction in some areas. These films have the potential to be great and not just ok.

What messed me up is when Cole got his powers they automatically crowned him leader and started listening to everything he said.
Seriously ... five minutes earlier he quit on saving the world and ran home ... comes back and they act as if he's their hero.

MK has 90+ characters, and they decide to invent the most boring dude with the most unimaginative power to be the main character. Why? Shit, make Liu Kang the main character and have him go about recruiting people for the tournament before Sub assassinate them all.
And that arcana crap. Why do you need to explain where they get their powers from. Cause how does this mystical crap explain how Jax's, Sonya's, and Kano's powers work. Their powers are more in line with technology than magic.

Kano got a bit of a build up to waking up his power. He was getting angry. His anger worked as a catalyst and it happened. And by accident actually. Clearly telling us he can't control it just like that and needs to learn to.
Cole? his family was in danger, and even tho it's cliche, it's still kind of world (Cassie Cage is under a similar situation in the last chapter of MKX, family and friends in danger, bad guy about to win and boom... got daddy's green stuff). I gotta admit tho, the fact that it gave him like an armor and then weapons... he meant to do that or does the arcana itself conveniently does things for the user? Now that I think of it, it wasnt that good neither.
But Sonya was def the worst. All she did was to kill Kano. We see the mark on her skin... Next scene she shows up in, she's already shooting ring projectiles off her arms, as if she somehow knew exactly how to do it.
And Jax... I mean, I don't plan to try to understand how the arcana would or should work at this point, but it literally gave him a tech enhancement upgrade. If it gave him metal skin(a mutation like that one X-Men character or the other guy from DC's Legends of Tomorrow) but that was just weird. Went Cyberpunk in a split second there.
Idk. I honestly wish I could stop seeing all those things and just enjoy the movie for what it is. That's how much I have wanted a new MK movie and want sequels to for a legit MK universe... I also want it to be good tho. Yet this movie ain't exactly that.

I have nitpicks, but other than that I loved the movie. I do wish that Reiko would have fallen onto the pit impaled on spikes after he was headless. And I do wish we had actually seen a small 10-15 second flashback actually SHOWING Bo Rai Cho training a young Liu Kang. I feel it would have allowed us to connect More with his character. Otherwise I truly loved the movie.

Yeah, personally I thought the new character Cole was completely pointless and stupid. The director's reasoning for it is nonsense - Johnny Cage could have easily been the "audience character" who is discovering all this stuff for the first time. Cole is ridiculous.

This movie felt like a prequel before the story of the Mortal Kombat we all know and love in a way.

It was a prequel lol the cast is signed on to do 4 more movies.
Which is good, it sets up for the actual Mortal Kombat and higher stakes for the characters. The film was not perfect but not bad. I am looking forward to the sequel.

The "arcana finding" part was just unnecessary. They could explain Cole getting his powers because Scorpion was his ancestor. Jax, Sonya and Kano powers could all be explained as technology, new gear they got to help on the kombat.
The whole Arcana was added just to give Cole his "awakening" moment with power up.
The movie wasted so much portion of its run time unlocking their arcana it doesn't even feel like Mortal Kombat during that time.
The whole training scene could have been the characters showing off their power & new high-tech gears to get ready for the fight instead of constantly searching for some inner power bs.
My favorite part was the leg sweep with kano and lu. Payed homage to the 1st video game 😂 I thought it was funny "that the only move you know"

This movie is so weird. It’s like they didn’t know where to spend their budget. They clearly spent a big portion on the reptile special effects, but they could have easily made him more humanoid ninja looking (it’s my preference though, so maybe I’m biased) and used that budget to fix some of the ropey cg effects. Some look great, but others look so green screen.
The writer of the movie came out and said Cole Young was a mandated studio exec decision out of his control lol
so WB is still being WB? Can't wait to see what they pull in Dune, lol.....

This is a Warner Bros production. Guess who owns Mortal Kombat..... WARNER BROS! They didn't lease the IP for this film, they own it. That means they could have done anything they wanted, they could use the music, the characters, all of it and they chose not to. Hell, they have Ed Boone and all of Netherrealm ON THE PAYROLL! He's just a phone call away! It would be so easy to ask Ed and his team of writers to come up with a script for a Mortal Kombat film. They write a new 6 hour MK film every 4 years already so I'm sure they could do a 2 hour film pretty damn easily. This stuff is so easy and yet these studios just keep failing. It's laughable and enraging at how badly they mess simple things up.

1. Cole Young = Cool Young = Kuai Liang aka Sub Zero 2. Like maybe the little/young brother somehow lose memories & got stranded on earth in current timeline years ago. So maybe when his arcana got unlocked & he get ice powers, things being revealed or something.
Cole Young = direct son of Scorpion/Hanzo. Same premise of got stranded on earth & losing memories.
Cole Young = Johnny Cage. being revealed at the end of movie or something with Cole making a new name, new identity, etc
Cole Young = tremor. Probably becaus of some of the leak-ish footage of Cole engulfed with magic (earthly) armor. Maybe turn into the dark side in the end instead for an interesting twist.
Cole Young = Rain. A twist that reveal of cole being Rain, the fiancee of Kitana who thought to be dead years ago by Shao Khan. Turn into antagonist who strife for power, "enemy of my enemy is my friend" type of thing.

Goro appears out of a barn... Most of this movie was "Really!?" moment by moment.
Of all the characters to send to earth to fight cole they chose goro, just felt so out of place seeing him fighting in that setting.
"Really!?" and "Where are we NOW?" and "This can't really be the way they are doing it?" and "I could write a better script than this, and I'm fucking terrible" and "They didn't earn that"

@@familyfirstnation4605 Totally agree. Nothing had any room to breathe and each "fight" seemed so incredibly short. They could have cut Cole out, made either Sonya, Jax, Liu Kang or Kung Lao the main character(s) and added in longer better fights that actually feel like a progression for these characters.
Personally I would have gone with Sonya as the main character and have her fill in Jax as the audience character - who she has been keeping the secret of Mortal Kombat from. Her relationship with Kano, and Kano in general, are one of the few good things in this movie. It should have felt like a huge payoff when she finally took the mark from Kano but it just ends up lost in the sauce.
Making Sonya the main character would also make an ending teaser about Johnny Cage that much better, because we in the audience know how that relationship plays out.

Well, if they had focused on 5-6 characters that are the major one instead of 20 they could have established a decent lore. They just keep adding and adding more characters during the movie that you couldn't manage it all in 90mins. Kabal had 2 mins of screentime.

This, some of the pandering to the fans was cringe. I get some pandering, or stuff fans will get. Actually the sweep kick done to Kano was pretty funny, and it's something that anybody who played the games would get. I'm a MK video game fan myself, but that moment of "GET OVER HERE" with scorpion in particular was so jarring and just took you out of the film. At least he should have shouted that in Japanese and it would have been fitting and a nice twist on what people expect. Also the serious disciplined Liu Kang just saying "Fatality" like the announcer in the game. Liu Kang who is supposed to be this devout disciplined Shaolin monk boasting "fatality" really? Just came off as out of place and lame. I enjoyed quite allot in different parts of the movie, and I will gladly go see a sequel, but they need to change direction in some areas. These films have the potential to be great and not just ok.
