This has to be one of the worst sequels ever made. The first Mortal Kombat was fun trash. This is a dumpster fire. It has some of the worst effects we've ever seen, a nonsensical story, and dialogue that belongs in Action Jackson. This movie was so much worse than I expected.

I was a diehard MK fan as a kid, & even as an 12 year old, I felt guilty for dragging my dad to see this in theaters.... It was so uncomfortable to watch, and all I kept thinking was "dad is never going to take me to a movie again."
Nothing worse than watchin a movie with our parents and knowing "now they think I'm retarded...."

A: They spent most of the budget to pay the salaries for Brian Thompson, Talisa Soto, and James Remar. They barely had any money left for VFX. They hired an intern, sat him in a room with a 2nd hand Pentium PC and a pirated copy of Adobe AfterEffects and Maya 3D.
That's my theory.
I like the pirated Maya 3D touch, haha.
I remember seeing this in a theater. Some kid near us in the audience turned to his dad partway through and asked him why the good guys couldn't tell that Jade was evil. Much more entertaining than anything in the movie.

Fun fact: after this movie came out, Paul w.s. Andersen promised to not leave a franchise early again. This moviie is possibly part of the reason why we got all those resident evil movies with his wife as the main protagonist
When I saw the review from Cody leach someone dropped the comment saying that Paul ws Anderson was blaming himself when he didn't wanted to make mortal kombat annihilation and instead make event horizon which is a smart move

But he did, Apocalypse and Extinction were directed by other people.
And the Resident Evil movies have issue that they didn't stop when it's good. There are so many franchises that are done to death and way beyond their peak.
And the stories and characters had so little to do with the games.
One of the weirdest things about this movie for me is that Motaro (the centaur demon-looking guy) is played by the man known to many as Malibu from American Gladiators.
That's some interesting casting.
@@JasonBrant Certainly not one I expected. Apparently Malibu has serious skills in Karate (not sure which style) so it's a wonder they didn't give him some other role. Who knows, maybe his contract requires his face to be seen? :P
Malibu literally has no standards. The guy will do anything for a pay cheque, including being on "Baywatch Nights".
And I love how he claimed that he didn't use steroids for his physique, but got jacked and ripped through "prayer and faith". Fucking carny!

I was 12 when this piece of shit came out and this was actually the first time I ever left the theater angry over how shitty a movie was. As someone that was (and still is) a fan of the games, watching this was absolute torture. Just watching this review has drug up those feeling of rage I felt as a kid. Fuck this movie!

@@MrWise1888 well, it was definitely better than this piece of rotten cat shit. There were aspects of it that I liked (basically the first scene, some of the character and costume designs and Kano), but overall I found it pretty bland and boring. I honestly liked the original more, even though it isn't great either, just because I found it more entertaining. Until Hollywood starts taking gaming more seriously I just don't think we are ever going to get a really great videogame movie.

What I will say is I think they are taking the gaming industry seriously when they make movies/ series I just think MK can be a difficult thing to transfer on to the big screen. I agree they could have done a lot more with the new movie although there are really excellent parts within it.

What gets me is, I've seen that actress in other stuff, and she's actually pretty talented. I can't believe she came up with that line delivery on her own.
Clash of the Titans (1981) had better VFX with those classic stop motion claymation models.
My younger brother was so excited about this movie when it came out. I remember him leaving to see this with some friends, I wasn’t able to go. When he got back, the look of disappointment was so intense I thought something must have happened to his little group like maybe someone got hurt… nope

I remember seeing Annihilation in theaters, and what I remember the most was the headache I got from the Animality scene. The audio was so loud and screeching I though my ears were bleeding. As a Mortal Kombat fan since 1992 to this day, this movie is unbearable to watch and just awful.
And it's funny that Linden Ashby, Brigette Wilson, and Christopher Lambert (Cage, Sonya, and Raiden) refused to come back for this film, but recently did voice work and had their likeness used for a Mortal Kombat 11 character pack as their original characters (and even Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa returned as Shang Tsung).
Loud screeching while watching that scene... Jesus.

So, I just looked it up. Apparently, in 2012, both of the Co-creators of Mortal Kombat gave interviews. Each of them said that Annihilation was their worst experience on dealing with the series. Now, that takes some serious lack of talent. Matt McMuscles did a full Wha' Happuned on this movie. I recommend it if you want to get the details.

Even though John Tobias got story credit, he wasn't involved at all. i'm assuming he got that because he mainly came up with the story of the first 4 MK games. Funny fact, somebody asked Ed Boon if Scorpion will say suckers, and his response verbatum was "good God... NO"

I saw this movie in theaters. If you think the CGI looks bad on a TV, try to imagine that blown up full size. I legit could not even understand what was happening during the Kang/Kahn fight.
Must have been quite an experience.
Fun Fact: They filmed the Sindel fight and cut it. But, really, considering the quality of all the other fights I'm pretty sure they did us a favor!

I remember going to see this in theaters with my brother. It was cringe-inducing then how they skipped the story of MK2, the horrible CGI (even for 1997), the terrible fight choreography, and bad writing. It feels worse now! I did think Talisa Soto and Irina Pantaeva, the actresses who played Kitana and Jade respectively, were totally hot though.

9:05 fun fact: Cyrax does have a fatality that is an ode to Predator in MK3. He even laughs manically.
During the fight between Liu Kang and Shao Kahn, the Elder Gods intervened because Shinnok, another elder God, was going to kill Liu Kang for Shao Khan. They subdued Shinnok so Liu Kang and Shao Kahn could continue fighting without interference of the Shinnok.
This movie was terrible for a lot of reasons, but the Director's mismanagement of the budget contributed to the bulk of the failures supposedly. It's a perfect shitty video game treasure from my child hood that I actually remember seeing in theaters.
I can't imagine watching this in the theater. Actually, I can... I saw Battlefield Earth in the theater.
And Zindel( who ever that evil chick was in the start) warned our " heroes" that in 6 days " earth will be destroyed"...yeah... Talk about leaking your plan

The "CEO" is supposed to be Shinnok. Couple of (dis) honorable mentions.
1 the ninja army disappears at the final fight. The army on horseback gets smaller every time the camera shoots back at them.
2. Baraka's death is Rain's death reused. Seriously, go back and pause it. The moment Liu Kang knocks Baraka off the cage, the next shot is Rain falling into the fire pit. Also if you slow it down, you see a hand from the crew.

I seen this at cinema in UK it was packed & the cinema was literally comatosed when we all left we were like zombies & couldn't process the shit we'd actually endured for 90 minutes.
Bad acting, bad editing, appalling cgi, awful set design & no plot whatsoever.
This was fantastic reaction video I now advise going lie down in dark room for 24 hrs & listen to some mindfulness relaxation videos because you both look traumatised lol.

I was dying.
I remember seeing this when I was a kid and feeling everything you felt watching this movie. It was a joy to see you discover how bad it is. It was a massive disappointment to Kombat kids like me.
A few notes:
When the dragon tattoo leaves the body and disappears its the same shot reused every time, and when Baraka is tossed into the fire pit it is actually the shot of Rain (the purple ninja) being knocked into the pit from earlier in the movie.
Love you guys. This was a great episode.

I couldn't wrap my head around it.
A fighting tournament isn't a GOOD storyline, but it is a story! You have good guys and bad guys; they take turns beating each other up one at a time; and whether it's a bad ending or a happy ending depends on which guy is last to not be beaten up. I don't understand how the writers thought anything they did to change that basic story was an improvement.

In an interview for Luke Owen’s book, Lights, Camera, Game Over, Producer Lawrence Kasinoff revealed the film was released unfinished. “I’m telling you the effects in that movie are not the final effects.” Kasanoff admits. “I never anticipated that someone would take the movie and go, ‘it’s good enough’. We weren’t done. We never finished that movie. But the studio said, ‘we don’t care’. We sacrificed quality for business.”
Now he could just be passing the buck, but it does explain the extremely poor special effects. Personally, I watched this movie for free and felt ripped off.

The guy who played Sub-Zero is Keith Cooke, who also played Reptile in the first film. He's in a few "so bad it's good" movies that would be right up your alley, such as China O' Brien and King of the Kickboxers. He was also in Beverly Hills Ninja for some reason.

I'll die on this hill! This movie is the perfect movie version of the MK games at the time. The story is rediculous, the costumes are cheap spandex, special moves are spammed and it gobbled up your hard earned coins to see it. 100% authenic 1997 MK game experience made in to a movie. If anything, they failed in not adapting the source material to a new medium!
If you do die on that hill, make sure you take this movie with you.

I was perplexed the entire movie.
I love this movie. It’s an absolute train wreck. My favorite scene is when Baraka gets kicked off the bell and if you pause at the moment before the flame you can see they reused the same scene of Rain being knocked into the fire. They didn’t even film a death scene for Baraka. Also Montoro and Jax are being played by Malibu and Sabre from American Gladiators. Omg there’s so much in this movie, it can be a 3 part series break down.

I appreciate your channel and the professionalism you demonstrated by watching this film all the way through. When I "tried" to watch this movie, I was around 21 years old...full of beer and watching it with some friends. You know, the complete mark age and condition of the base this movie's made for...it's the way you watch this kind of crap and have fun. It was anything but. It was impossible. I genuinely enjoyed the first film. I went around telling people it was the best video game film ever made (not that that sets a high bar), but I wanted to like this second movie. But it was so abysmal that I didn't complete the task. It's unwatchable. It's like no effort was made at all and I honestly tell you that I don't remember a single scene. All I remember is turning off the film. When you're only memory of watching a movie is turning it off...it's a statement. Keep up the good work!

The budget was low, and NOBODY wanned to makes this, they did it purly from contractual obligation.
The only one who spent more then 5 minutes thinking about what to put in the film was the actor of Liu Kang who created the fight-coreography.

They claim they spent $30mil, but they actually spent $70mil. Saw some interviews with actors from this movie and said it was the directors first movie and he blew the money to quickly and didnt have enough at end where all the work and editing comes to play.

Hey guys. I have only just recently discovered your awesome channel. I love it. Thank you. Especially how you both give Steven Seefood Seagal a tonne of shit. Lmao. With MK Annihilation - it's interesting to note that even though the movie is overall really bad, and it contains a lot of corny dialogue, one set of lines in particular actually got voted as one of the worst lines in movie history. This was a few years ago, so, I don't know if it still counts. But here are the lines as I remember them.
Kitana - "Mother, you're alive?"
Sindel - "Too bad, you will die!"
Hahaha...
I cringed it that line really hard.
I watched this in the theaters when it first came out. And I didn't remember anything about this movie. So basically I built a wall to protect myself from the mental and emotional trauma of watching this movie and this video removed that beautiful barrier that protected me all these years. It was awesome watching you guys sit through it!

For every little touch, every little nuance, every little moment the first movie got right this one got utterly, doubly wrong. The display of lack of understanding of filmography, casting, and knowledge of the source material in this film cuts to the core.

Yeah, MK 95 is pretty dumb, but it was a fun beat 'em up that stayed true to the game's lore; and Robin Shou, Cary Tagawa and Linden Ashby all gave great performances.
Annihilation was pure cash-in.
And don't forget Christopher Lambert.
A better title for this garbage pile would’ve been Mortal Kombat: Abomination.

The pain is so palpable, haha! But can you imagine how much worse it would have been to be anticipating this movie to be good and going to see it in the theater?? I don't even think we stayed for the whole thing because I didn't even recognize that stop motion CGI shit at the end.
Perhaps I just repressed the trauma.

When you said you guys were suffering through this one, this trampoline shot was the first thing that popped into my mind. When I saw this in theaters all those years ago, at that precise moment I had had enough and started getting up to walk out. My friend stopped me, he was in tears from laughing.
Robin Shou(Liu Kang) did the fight choreography. He was so happy talking about it in some interview leading up to the film. He genuinely wanted to make the fans happy and I guess he kind of did because these fights were hilarious to watch.
Poor Robin Shou.
If I remember correctly, this movie was the pinnacle of having no money, no time, the wrong people making it, and producer meddling that would shock Golan/Globus.
$30 million budget. Insane.
One of the best parts about this movie is that I think it was almost completely recast except for the guy who played Liu Kang. Because you just can't recast him and make a movie like this work. I say that loosely...
good on johnny cage for turning up again, but they killed him off because he read the script and said get me out of this. if i recall they didnt even finish post production.. new line decided it was testing well enough for kids so they decided not to do any more editing or cgi, where the greenscreen is fuzzing around and the abominable frame rates definitely look like a first draft. and it wasn't too bad a gamble - as bad as it was, they did fare pretty well at the box office.
@@morri254 I saw it in the theater, myself. Compared to other bad movies that came out during the same time period (like Bio Dome or Battlefield Earth) it actually wasn't terrible. Still not even close to being as good as the original MK film though.
@@HarvestMoonHowl oh i was 100% with the guys, MK is a guilty pleasure... to this day, i still have the dvd somewhere. and you're absolutely right.. battlefield earth was never ironically entertaining and pauly shaw is a fkn nightmare. so the bar was low.. but i just remember it being a bit low that a studio would actively decide that hey - we will make our money back from exactly this point, so lets stop trying... finish the movie?! fk that! kids are stupid, they'll watch anything. actively bombed the franchise

I loved MK game after school frustrations, also 1st MK movie I found as perfect game adaptation & great fantasy martial arts movie... at the time. Now, I prefer more over-the-top "Street Fighter" movie with JCVD & Raul Julia (RIP).

To some extend I get the fan service, the creators packed as many game features (characters, moves, sceneries, backstories) as they could. Plot was expected to be stupid, but the execution was disaster. Graphics, effects, costumes are not even bad, just vomiting awful. Cristopher "Highlander" Lambert did well declining the appearance in the sequel.
I never forget that back flip scene lmao, even as a young child I was like "wtf is this lol?!"

I remember waiting for this to come out. Was crazy for mk when I was about 13. This killed my love. Even as a teen I realised this was absolutely awful. Still watched it more than I should’ve. Now when I watch it my reaction mirrors yours. How did it get made. There’s a film to be made about the making of the film. 🤣
