      @@vijayhajari9069 very much agree. I have the base engine, though with the switchable sports exhaust and suspension, and I love it. I like the sound it makes, its more than fast enough on UK roads, and it feels fantastic. It sounds better in real than in all the videos but then I guess most cars do. Sure a six would sound better, but then a 10 would sound even better than a six. There's always a compromise.

      True, but, do you know the origin for Brit cars being RHD? It was due to the Royal Army or Cavalry to be precise. They insisted cars must be designed RHD so that Cavalry Officers would have their right hand free to wield their swords and fight like gentlemen. Problem was all those toffee nose twits thought because they were gentlemen that they were better than everyone else. However, they didn’t have a clue about engineering or driving a car. If they had, they would’ve specified LHD thus leaving the officer free to fight and wield their swords on the right side of the vehicle whilst their driver controlled the car from the left side of the vehicle. Additionally, they were elitist and arrogant too. They thought driving a car was above the station of an enlisted soldier and that they could do a better job of driving and fighting simultaneously. However, the big lesson they all soon learned was that when they were driving their cars they needed both hands to steer most of the time and occasionally one hand to change gears. Leaving NO hands to wield their swords. And once they realised their almighty cockup did they have the courage and common sense to correct their mistake? No! They stubbornly and arrogantly persevered with a mistake that has cost Britain and the world billions and billions of unnecessary spending. All that for a bunch of blithering burkes playing with their swords and waving them around. In the antipodes we have an appropriate “W” word to describe these twits who play with their swords.

      Malcolm R Monaghan I believe Britain will regret Brexit.
      When Britain joined the EU they began breaking or seriously reducing economic and export/import ties with countries like NZ and Aussie. And they didn’t really care much about how it affected the Antipodes either. Those countries were forced to find new markets, which they did. Markets that pay much better prices for our better quality exports. Markets that are geographically closer and cheaper to freight to. Markets that have developing growth industry that doesn’t have all the political and industrial baggage of UK industry. Markets that offer better and cheaper trade options. The old British Empire isn’t worth a snap of your fingers nowadays. The Brexit promoters sold you all the biggest lemon in the history of the British Empire, with old delusional notions of an economic powerhouse of the 50s and 60s that, truthfully, are long gone...
      It’s all about population and geography and the EU is the best future hope for Britain. The Antipodes have closer more reliable and profitable markets to buy & sell (export/import) to. S.E Asia which has 50 times the population and industrial growth offerings that Britain has. Does Britain have the money to buy competitively and fund higher shipping costs too? Will the British people be prepared to pay the increased prices and put up with increased shipping times. I don’t think so. Britain represents less than 1% of the worlds population. S.E Asia is more than 50% of the worlds population. Brexiter’s had better reconsider their mistake before it turns into economic purgatory and Br - Ankrupt...

    Got rid of my 981 S for a 718 Cayman base with Sports Chrono. The 718 is faster & everything about it is better. Yes, I even like the exhaust note. Volume can be adjusted on the steering wheel if you have the upgraded heated wheel like I do. No turbo lag if you drive in Sports mode which I do. Even the turbo lag you mention is minuscule & only if you leave it in normal mode at practically a dead stop. When I’m moving, there is no lag. Everything else about the engine is so much better. Pulls like a freight train down low unlike the flat 6 which only picked up at higher revs. I’m a bit disappointed about your lack of knowledge regarding the engine performance between the flat 6 and the new flat 4. I would figure you guys would be a bit more informed. This car is meant for drivers & clearly neither of you are true drivers.

    I bought this car - paid in cash - a couple of months ago in black/red for 100k quids fully loaded. Long story short you dont understand the new 718. What other car is that fast on small streets as in the UK? I like the turbo sound of the engine so much, especially when the electric vents are on, and yes its different from the flat 6s. What is so great about it is the max torque from low 2k revs ... provided the sports mode is switched on in this sports car. What your car is missing though is electronic body control, seat and mirror memory, ACC, easy entry. The volume knob is on the right side. Its the steering wheel that is on the wrong side. This car is NOT built to go at 30-80mph but rather 130-180mph on the Autobahn. So you better get a cosy family Ford and be happy.

    Hey Guys,
    I own both a 718 Boxster S and a 992 C4S Cab so I'd like to share my point of view. I owned a 981 Cayman GTS before the 718 and I can tell you that the only thing that car does better than the 718 is engine noise. The 6 cylinder engine is sublime and musical. No doubt about it. If it were possible, I would prefer to have a 6 cylinder engine on the 718. However, the 718 is fantastic at doing everything else. Much faster than the 981, handles perfectly and the balance is spot on. All the new tech you crave in a modern daily driver and the looks (although always relative) are out of this world. I fully respect your opinions but there's one thing I just can't seem to agree with. The "I'm in a Boxster not in a 911" argument. IMO, that only applies to people who are looking to show off or that truly care about what other people think. People will always find a way to hate what you have. If you're in a Boxster they'll say you're not driving a proper P car. A 911. But when does this stop? If you're in a 911 Carrera, they'll say you drive the base model, not an S. If you drive a Turbo S they'll say you couldn't afford a GT2RS... and so on. If you own a 488 you're not driving a V12 Ferrari. Point in question? Haters will always hate. I've had tons of people compliment the 718 and I've had people say that I drive a C4S and not a Turbo S. What matters is that you enjoy YOUR car. If you feel self conscious about the car, mate, you've purchased the wrong car. Love my 718 and my 911. They are two different cars and I fully enjoy driving both of them. Once again, I respect your opinion and truly enjoy your content but I think you're in a position of "power" when it comes to giving advice to people and my take on this review was that you were quite agressive with it. In my country, Portugal, the 718 is the best selling Boxster since its creation. They must be doing something right, I say. My thoughts about the 718 are that it drives fantastic, looks fantastic, feels fantastic, sounds bad (but it's the price of progress. We would all love to own V12 cars). Thanks for reading and keep up the great work!

    • @TheCarGuysTV
      @TheCarGuysTV  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi João, to address one of your points quickly. We said how the opinion that a Boxster is only bought by people who couldn't afford a 911, has led to many amazing cars being missed. We weren't advocating that point of view.

    • @TheCarGuysTV
      @TheCarGuysTV  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Awesome comments though, João. A very balanced and fair response. For me, the engine and the sound is 90% of the car.

      @joaomacedo2646 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@TheCarGuysTV Thanks for the response and I now understand what you meant with that particular comment. 100% agree with you both on that point and also on the point that engine and sound is crucial in a car. The problem is that EU regulation (though fair) is destroying what we love about cars and what makes them emotional. I tend to buy my cars new, so I'm "forced" to face the current line up at Porsche. When I bought the 718, there was no other way but to go 4 cylinder. Same applies with the 992. Although it still holds the 6 cylinder engine, it's twin turbo. I won't be getting that 3.8 musical engine noise that gives you goosebumps. But gasoline particulate filters are also killing NA engines (718 Spyder, as you pointed out in your review). The engine doesn't sound like a screaming 4.0. In conclusion, when choosing a daily driver, although engine and sound are very important, all the other elements come in the equation too. At the 718's price point, I can't really think of any other car that ticks as many boxes as the 718 (in my opinon. M2C is really good but the looks are not my taste). 992 price range is another question (R8, Ferrari, etc.) but I would still pick a 911 for all the intangible things about this icon. Cheers!

      João Macedo I totally agree with you, I own a 718 Boxster S, a 991 Carrera T and a 993. The 718 engine definitely isn’t as soulful as the 981’s, I really don’t think it’s that bad. By the way I genuinely sell sewing machines for a living. (Google my name). The rest of the car is amazing and it puts a smile on my face when I drive it, I found it more fun than a 992. True they are not holding there value, which is why I bought an 18 month old one (before the particulate filter, better sounding) £20k cheaper than new. Love you videos

    Right. I’ve now had 6 Porsches. I love the brand but I don’t like the issues that come with Porsche ownership. It’s OK if one is rich and can change a second (or third car) every couple of years, but I get emotional attached to my cars.I like to keep them in the family. They all have pet names. So why do Porsche, my favourite brand, build cars that have an inherent design fault (flat 6 engine) and have to be rebuilt every 100k miles or 10 years? Bore scoring, IMS bearings cross tubes, coffin arms, the list goes on and on. I’ve got a 911 997 with just over 80k miles on it. Yes is been diagnosed with early stage bore scoring. But that’s not all, because it’s a Gen 1, it will need an IMS replacement, plus the coolant pipes need replacing plus many of the brake lines. Cost of repairs? Parts about £15k. Labour probably the same although no one will commit to a definite number. That makes this 997 destined for the scrap heap! How dare Porsche make cars this bad with known design faults! So if the new 718 4 cylinder isn’t prone to bore scoring, then I’m buying one!!!!

    These guys are so biased, as he said in the comments, that they only bought the car, because that is required to have an allocation for the Spyder... so it's obvious they were on the “wrong foot” from the start with the car... usually when we are forced to have something, it is very, very rare, that we like it and say good thinks about it!...
    For this kind of person PORSCHE is only 911, but they forgot the 718 is more of what PORSCHE considers to be a sports car, middle engine, small and nimble and of course only two-seater...
    To summarize, you don't like it, it is ok, there are plenty of people who like it, so much that to fulfil the demands, right now, the 718 lineup is being produced in two factories (Zuffenhausen and Osnabrück ).
    In their defence, I do also prefer the sound of the naturally-aspirated 4.0-litre flat-six engine, but the 2.0 and 2.5 Lt. engines are also very good, whether in terms of performance and if we "work" with the gearbox, they have no turbo lag, the sound is also good enough and I think they are worthy of being PORSCHE engines.

Haven't driven the S or GTS but the base model has zero lag. I drive my car all year round, was it +30C or - 30C. Best car I've had so far and I've had quite a few cars. I was loaned a 718 for a few thousand miles and and was impressed by its many qualities - I disagree with many of the criticisms raised.
    Do you want to drive the car, or wear it as a pair of headphones?
    The four cylinder outperforms the six in almost all areas except the sound - you've completely missed the point, it's a car built for driving which it is very accomplished at.
    I couldn't understand the many references to a retired BT engineer (I'm not one by the way) you seem to have a deep seated issue with BT - is your broadband playing up or something? I'm sure that the makeup of 718 purchasers is wide and varied, but if they have the funds then good luck to them, whatever their current, or past profession - I'm sure they'll enjoy their car almost as much as the two presenters enjoy pontificating from a platform of ignorance.
    The comments section which compared the presenters to Statler and Waldorf (Muppet Show Old guys in the balcony) was the funniest thing about this channel.
    I noted that the Dislike/Like ratio of the channel of almost a quarter suggests to me that they are perhaps presenting contentious views in the hope of boosting their viewing figures. What a sad way to gain a few extra clicks.

    First off, it's one of the best handling cars out there. It has a sub 4 sec to 60 and an 11 second 1/4 mile. The 4pot in it is glorious when an exhaust is put on it. I came out of a 911 and this car is faster, handles better and to my eye has a more sport look esp with how big the 911 has become. There is barely any turbo lag and the amount of torque you get is nutty. On track the increase in TQ compared to the flat 6 is substantial and really helps rocket you out of corners. I think the purists are missing just how impressive this power plant is and is by far one of if not the best on the market. Am I biast because I own one, maybe but I have owned many high end sports cars along with other Porsches incliding 911s. This car is a samurai sword. Its a shame what is being said about it.

You misquoted the 0-60 times (3.8 w PDK), neglected to discuss how its far quicker and has more TQ than the previous version. Its faster around the track than the GT4. The chassis "feels heavy" because it is drastically stiffer and more robust. The brakes are the same as on the 911 which is a substantial improvement over the 981. You test lag in the wrong gear. Commented on handling when you are on narrow wet english backroads. I can keep going. It was just a lazy review and most of the people here have no experience with the car or the rest of the brands line up to be informed. I could go into the tech of the engine, and all its merits but I am not going to "win" an argument here so why bother. I love the way it sounded. I have been watching many videos about the 718 and they sound pretty good to me maybe it’s just the acoustics of a computer. I don’t see how it sounds like a sewing machine. It sounds like a four-cylinder sports car which most of your British cars have always been. My mothers 1955 TF-1500 which she has owned since 1958 with a three-quarter cam sounds pretty good because I know what it supposed to sound like. My 1970 Buick GS 455 stage one sounded different it was a 455 cubic inch V8. The best thing ever done to a British sports car was Carroll Shelby putting a 427 Ford in it. I think it almost sounds like a twin fire V8 like a Ferrari 348 or 360. I would still probably prefer the flat six, but I don’t think it sounds terrible.

    The 718 is a substantial improvement on the model it replaces. It’s quieter, more relaxing to drive and a good deal faster, but most of all it has got rid of the jittery rear end of the previous models. It handles much better.
    The old six was laboured and sluggish by comparison and even if you revved it to the limit all the time.

      For example the 718 steering is more direct, precise and lighter. My 987 wasn’t as accurate as my newer Mercedes for example.
      I doubt any manufacturer produces a new model that isn’t better than its predecessor.
      However many purchase decisions are subjective, modern cars outperform most owners capabilities so it is inevitable that something like an exhaust should attract discussion way beyond the engine’s vast performance improvement.

Also another thing. Porsche has just stated that Boxster, Cayman, Maccan, Panamera are all going to go be electric in the next 5,8 years. With the 911 and Cayenne being heavily Hybridized. These cars are gonna go up in prices, and fast Can't even get a decent 996 for under 20k in EU....
      And another thing that really bugs me, you doubt that a car maker would produce a model, that would be worst than the last. That depends how you look at it. The quality of most cars has gone down. Replacing good quality materials with cheaper ones, and adding useless gizmos. So if you're all up for toys, lane assists and electric steering brackets, yeah the newer models are better than the old ones.. You're buying a sports car, not a family SUV. It's supposed to be raw, light, agile, and meant to give you a feel. Sure you may be faster, and more comfortable, especially if you have an automatic. I drive a 981 Cayman at 27 (no retired BT employee here) and when I was purchasing it, I found the 718 cheaper in some cases than the 981s. Nothing beats that naturally aspirated sports chrono fun but I don't nessicarily think their market is older people or hairdressers. They're mostly for people who cannot afford a 911 yet.
    I paid around £34k for my 981 (all the bells and whistles too) and you can easily afford 2004-2008 911s for this price but they just look so dated compared to newer Caymans. Especially the inside. I think it's quite clear the issue with this car, as in this review you've not stopped about it. It's the engine. If you swapped it for the NA flat 6. It would be arguably one of the most perfect sports car.
    Thats called a GT4 which anyone sane would pick over an old 911. Even Porsche themselves are afraid of stepping on the 911s toes with the Caymans. They know it handles better.

    Firstly: the unimportant part. The volume knob is only wrongly placed if you're living on your Island. In about 150 other countries the volume knob is on the correct side. That aside - pun intended: it is all personal taste and preference. Even the sound of the flat four: some like it, some don't. I think the 718 is a proper sports car in its own right, and it should not be compared to the 911. It is aimed at another target group. I myself I'm owning a 718 at the moment and I'm going to swap it for a 911 (992 Carrerra S Cabrio) in April. But I do not regret having driven the 718 Boxster for three years. Wonderful little car. As for the perceived heaviness: could it be you? I mean, the car is not that heavy, you yourself admitted that. Could it be you, being overweight? As an afterthought: it is totally beyond me how you can judge roadholding capabilities of a sports car by pottering along at 40-50 km/h. Visit a racing course if you want to speak about this subject, otherwise stick to interior quality and boot space (the sport‘s cars essentials).

    • @johnclucas1523
      @johnclucas1523 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Drive an Alpine A110 first and a Cayman will feel very very heavy. Even an Evora - which is a similar weight feels much lighter on its feet. It's partly the steering - Porsche seem to think heavyish steering is good. Specify Power Steering Plus and the Cayster feels significantly lighter and more agile at low speeds.

    I traded an aging 993 for a car I could actually drive: a 718 Boxster GTS. Paid a lot but money is relative. This car I can drive just like we did in the sixties. My first Porsche, a '60 Super 1600, Roadster clocked 25,000 miles in the year (then I sold it.) Maintenance was high for a young man making $2.50 an hour.
    Modern 718 Spyder with the 6 is again in a category one would not drive daily.

Equivalent 2.0 I4 engines from the VW group, with the usual variable vane turbos, have no noticeable turbolag with a similar-ish horsepower output on cars that weigh more than this.
