To be honest I would rather a ready made player (like Houston). In an ideal world you’d obviously have/want both, but I think our window with some of our older players is quite short. I just do not trust us with the 3rd pick to make a good selection, develop them and actually give them games, but maybe I’m being a pessimist

Hey mate! Great question, he must go to the draft so that Brisbane are forced to pay for him (equalisation working here). Once in the draft, Brisbane wait for a club to bid on him and then can match the bid. They must play the equivalent points value of the pick that Levi was bid on. If they chose not to match, Levi will go to the club that bid. If they match, they’ll pay with points accumulated through multiple draft picks. That’s why they traded their top selections this year for multiple late picks. It’s a heavily flawed system but something that is a work in progress I’d say.

@@marko9463 yeah it’s a big discussion in AFL. Nick Daicos was the best player in 2021 and didn’t get a bid until pick 4. Essentially teams don’t like to do it for 2 reasons. 1. They want to give the number 1 pick the honour of getting the number 1 pick. There’s also a financial element to that! And secondly, they like to keep relationships with other clubs for future trades that may benefit them.

@@seamusb9012 yeah it’s an interesting question that is always anchored to the draft. I think ultimately it comes down to the position the club is in (boring answer). Also depends on the specific draft how much difference in quality there is. So I wouldn’t be super keen to reach for a key position player if you need one. Like you said, better trying to split picks etc. the only mid I’d be comfortable taking for north is Sam Lalor. 187 and can play tall in the fwd half. If north hold pick 2 I’d rather them go for Lalor if he’s on the board!
