  • A new unique Milwaukee Tool Installation Driver is actually the first M12 Drill I actually see myself using if not daily, quite often on the jobsite… With 4 Unique attachments, it is extremely versatile and has an impressive amount of control and torque to drive an array of fasteners. You might be wondering is m12 tools are any good, and I try to answer that in the shop, but will have this on site so follow along on my instagram. @rrbuildings

It’s not all perfect. I am not a huge fan of the forward reverse selector, and the bit magnet could be a bit stronger, but in general, this was a great release by Milwaukee.

I am not a huge fan of the unboxing style tool intros...but this tool genuinely sparked my interest. After using it for about two seconds I knew what I was going to use it for and what I wasn't going to like...follow along on IG @rrbuildings to see me use it more and get more thoughts. I think its a solid little drill/driver tho. Drop a comment below what you think!!

First thing that came to mind when I saw it at NPS was door handle installation with that offset. I have stripped the heads of so many screws trying to drive them at an angle with a drill of impact.

I guess I am in the minority but I think relocating the forward/reverse to the button on top is a great idea. The traditional selector rubs on my hand and gets in the way of how I like to grip the drill. It’s nice to have a clean and clear surface , don’t have some bulky selector sticking out and getting in the way.

  • @Daynaleo1
    @Daynaleo1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

The huge benefit I see with the offset in the right angle is the fact that the outside of the attachment does not spin so you will not scratch up your cabinet by accident if you lean the tool against it. Sweet!

Love my Festool CXS and will probably get one of these as well because its M12.
People are so uninformed about the handle design. The proper grip is leaving your pointer finger pointing along the top of the motor housing with the other three gripping the handle. This puts your hand more “behind” the action allowing you to add “in line” pressure without adding more torque to your wrist than necessary.

The offset is super useful for installing equipment into networking racks. Many times the rails and mounts get in the way of driving the screws into the rack. Also having a clutch is needed where you take machines apart. I've broken screws and messed up threaded holes many times with a too powerful driver. Sometimes a race car isn't as useful as a bicycle.

I Bought one of these just two weeks ago, I have always been a Makita fan but I don't know that Makita makes a drill like this one. This drill is made to help with the more intricate tasks. I like that it provides so much more speed control and it tend to stay inline with your hand and wrist while in use. It is not meant to take the place of the large drill and impacts. Milwaukee did a really great job in designing a tool for a need.

Been putting mine to work for a couple days now. Mostly door hardware. If you hold it like a drywall gun then the switch is easy to access with your thumb. I got used to it pretty quick actually. The offset has made installing some electric door openers easy as some of the mounting screws were right in a corner.

Wow! Been looking for a replace for my Dewalts. The "L" handle design is more like a drywall screwshooter and is much better for control and driving force. The trend to make "T" handle drivers and drills puts the force of your hand and arm UNDER the center of the drill motor and bit. I find for me, it rubs the crook between my thumb and index finger raw, my hand cramps from having to tightly grip the handle. That's not bad if I am doing a few screws but, for larger projects, man! my hand gets stiff. An "L" handle allows you to put your palm BEHIND the center of the drill, pull the trigger with your middle finger and get a real inline thrust. Less stress on my hand and I can drill/drive all day long. Thanks Kyle, for sharing. And Yes, I could hear the difference with the different batteries.

Moving the forward/Reverse makes a lot of sense for truly tight spaces. My M12 tools really start driving me crazy when the F/R switch bumps into lockout while I'm trying to do work where my hands aren't able to get perfectly placed on the grip. And if you're going through a bunch of installs, then how often are you going into reverse anyway? Maybe the top of the tool isn't ideal, though, and I'd have a hard time trusting an electric switch over time.

Nice overview! I now feel able to comment with some value add, since my Mother in Law got me the M12 Installation Driver Kit for Christmas.
Man...what an awesome tool. I wish I had it 10 months ago when I was installing our new kitchen cabinets.
With regards to the 6 amp battery, there is a noticeable difference in sound and power. If you haven’t already tried it, I would suggest doing so. There’s a definite difference between the 2.0, 3.0 and 4.0 vs the 6.0. Besides more power/torque there’s the relative difference in extended run time between the aforementioned batteries.

This will be great for electricians and plumbers. The right angle adapter with an Irwin spiral auger bit is great for going through studs - no chuck needed, they have the 1/4” hex drive. The offset is nice for electrical boxes that are close to a stud. I have been using the Festool drills for years, and this will likely replace them for me as I’ll have fewer battery types to lug around.
The C body stole is nice when working on cabinets since you can leave it standing up rather than having to lay it on it’s side. It helps prevent little nicks or gouges in your finished cabinets.

I’m probably agreeing with 99% of the commenters in saying that the forward/reverse switch seems annoying. It’s basically making it a 2 handed action when it should be one. I’d be curious to hear from Milwaukee on it. They’re usually pretty good about design choices. There may be a good reason why they moved it. The off set would be nice in commercial plumbing. Trying to screw self tappers at an angle is next to impossible. There’s lots of hold rights and strapping where the head of the drill gets in the way of making a straight shot

Over the years , I’ve invested a lot in restricted access tools/ angle drills . I’ve tried the Festool CSX , and the Bosch FlexiClic , both underpowered , I prefer the Flexiclic . The Milwaukee is a Godsend , as it saves me carrying around another battery platform . The FlexiClic has been , relegated to home use.. The Festool was given to a young lady who is a Movie set dresser , so size is a big issue .

It's funny you said you don't like the m12 drill set. I had a Bosch 12v set then switched to the Milwaukee. Now I want to switch back. I feel like the Bosch set is much smaller and seems to have better run time also. I like the look of that drill (reminds me of the Festool), but I think that selector switch would drive me crazy. Thanks for your thoughts on it!

Thank you for showing the RPM of the two different batteries. I've argued for years now that the higher amperage batteries add more power, but everyone says that "no they don't". But when you compare the two batteries (when fully charged) they are obviously different. The bigger batteries do indeed add more rpm and power. Here's an example: If I try to run a 2.0ah on my m18 fuel circular saw, it just struggles to run at all, but the 4ah battery works fine. So what gives? They are the same voltage, so you would think the only difference would be the run time. My m12 impact is also noticeably stronger with the xc batteries than with the compact batteries. The only thing I can think is that maybe the higher amp hour batteries are designed to dump slightly more amperage than the smaller ones. No idea, but I agree with you that it's definitely different.

    • @reaperreaper5098
      @reaperreaper5098 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I know this is 2 years old, but the reason a 5.0 makes more power than a 2.0 in many (but not all) tools is because the 5.0 has more cells, and can provide more amps.
HOWEVER, if the batteries have the same number and size sells (like the Makita LXT 6.0 and 5.0), then typically the lower Ah rated battery can deliver more performance, as higher cap cells can only support lower draws, and high draw cells have lower capacities.
It makes no difference if a tool only needs what the compact battery can supply, and huge differences if it can’t.

I like the offset attachment but the other 3 are not worth the price tag, at least for me. It's $230 Canadian bare tool 4 attachments, case. I already have a right angle drill that gets me out of some tight areas and the old impact and 2 speed m12's are small enough for the cabinet work I occasionally do. Keeping long extensions has also been a real plus as long as you don't bend them.
The Bosch is $10 more and comes with 1 battery/charger but its brushed motor.
Around $180 I would go for it, so hopefully a sale comes up in 2020

Great review!! The offset attachment is fantastic when you can’t take the chance of the spinning chuck damaging a cabinet or drywall. For example, every ceiling fan has a cover at the top to hide the union and wiring harness. Most often those covers are held up with screws that are less than 1/4” from the ceiling surface. You can rest the offset against the ceiling with no risk of damage.

Milwaukee comes out once in a while with doesn't make sense tools. The last one was the m12 cut off tool. This seems like a good diyer tool but since there is no impact, there is no sense in the 1/4 inch might as well just stay in the drill chuck. The 90 is great for high volume professionals that need specific angles. like an electrician installing 30 fan canopies. Idk it doesn't seem like it has enough power to stand on its own against a impact, hammerdrill combo with a 1/4 90 bit that will break after 10 uses. Hard to justify the purchase when you already have these, and the impact hammerdrill combo is anybrand is a necessity.

Definitely reminds me of the Festool C18v drill which has the same type offset and right angle attachments. I’ve had mine for 15 years and like it for cabinet work or tight spaces. They came out with it before the Bosch or latest Milwaukee version. The hand guard portion gives the an additional location for electronics and accessories and seems to stiffen up the drill.
Dewalt has a new smaller version of their 12v impact with a larger 2.0 amp batter with a gauge on it. And you can select electronically between 2 different impact speeds or drill mode ! If Dewalt came out with a version like this Milwaukee’s or the Bosch’s attachments Dewalt would have one heck of a drill.
Please let us know if the forward reverse setup got less annoying. My theory for Milwaukee putting the switch there is if you are on your hands in front of or in a cabinet doing door hinges or door rails you can reach up with the thumb of the drilling hand or the opposite hand and make the change.
I know if I am in a customers home I always like to lock out my tools so a small child can’t play with them.
Maybe one day I’ll get a chance to play with this style Milwaukee system and compare it to my Festool system. I thought the Bosch Flex-I-click system was nice.

Back when I had my millwork shop that tool would have been great except for one huge thing, you can't change directions with one hand, and that would be a deal breaker for me and take a useful new tool and make it useless in many situations. Nothing worse than being in an awkward position trying to drive a screw into a place thats hard to reach and then needing to reverse the drill , and with the location of the button making it necessary to remove the drill and use both hands. I would NOT buy it for that specific reason. The offset head would have come in handy many times though.
Its a lot like a festool driver but I seldom bought things from festool because of the cost and the guys didn't take care of things in most cases.

Looks like that forward/reverse location was put there by an engineer w/o input from someone who uses these regularly/for a living. I'd not buy it simply for that reason. I can also foresee that handle (w/led, battery gauge, etc) getting in the way on certain jobs.

Robert Regan just an outside opinion, and I have yet to get my hands on this, but ... Festool’s been pretty successful with this tool design for years, and as a product development engineer, there is literally no way this didn’t make its way into a users hands prior to launch. Just might have been a unique sample group - like purely cabinet installers, or trim carpenters, etc. don’t knock it til you try it! Then ... if it actually is awful, go nuts! Or realize that it might have been designed for someone other than you.

Great video, I do have to say the direction change has gotta go! I don't own the festool drill in that form but, I did use my buddy's for about 3 weeks. I totally hated the knuckle saver guard on it. I fount myself grabbing the front as apposed to the trigger. The changeability of attachments is huge gimmick when you want them you can't find them and when you use them they just kinda let ya down. I used the drill in a low voltage tech application installing whole house audio, blinds and trimming out home theaters. At first I though the balance was the cats meow but soon found out it was just too much to the tool.My big problem I have with the Milwaukee line, is the clutch. I hate them. The electric clutch while I think is highly accurate, I'm use to a mechanical clutch. I owned m18 OneKey I thought all the stuff you could with the one key was cool till I had to use it. It drove me so crazy I sold them and went back to my old standby Makita! The balance and feel of the Makita is like an extension of my hand. I think you may like it for a short time but the m12 will get old. I will bet; at one time or another you may accidentally while changing bits, disconnect the chuck. I think Milwaukee makes some of the best tools in the market and, really listen to the trades I like the Makita sub compact and 18LXT better. Im not saying one is better, I just prefer the Makita. BTW I still own my m12 (gonna sell those too) Thanks for the video!
