Thanks man. I used a black sharpie to make a drawing of Calvin and Hobbs on a surfboard back in the day for my high school friend . Now I’m inspired with your help to make a sign for produce and contact info. Getting a board for a hundred today I hope. Going fe gloss coat Mahalo bredrin! 🤙🏾
I did posca on my board and sprayed over it with a uv clear spray. It looks so good I don’t think I even need to go to finer grit sandpaper or do a gloss coat. I will probably spray the whole board lightly with it maybe 2 coats.
Awesome! Yeah 1 coat is fine but a second coat will protect it even more if you are going to surf it. And you’re right you don’t need to gloss over the clear spray, the gloss won’t even stick to the clear spray anyway. Great job! Stoked for you 🤙🏼

Hey mate so i have done a big snapped board repair job. I have got the board ready for the filler coat. Before adding the filler coat am i correct in saying i can draw a design with posca pens before applying?
You should be able to. Some new boards have a light coat of sealant which should can lightly be sanded off. But to sander your question simplify yes. It should work just fine.
Hallo Wwlzie Grate Info an sweet Art work . I'm looking to paint on a P U surf board( between the fins) . Is it good to us this product: "spryMax 2k clear coat" , or will it be a normal 1k is enough? With gratitude Galil
Hi! The 2k clear coat will be fine. I usually do 2-3 light coats anyway. Do one coat with the 2x and see how it goes. If it looks like you need another coat, spray one on. The only issue with to much clear coat is weight. But if your not busting airs in a comp or pulling in at pipe the 6 gram weight added won’t make any difference. Have fun and stay inspired 🤙🏼
i only want to do a small black pattern on the nose of my board and i’ve already got wax and a traction pad on it. do you HAVE to clearcoat? i just don’t want the board to have a different sheen level on the nose and i want to keep the saturn kind of shein that is currently on it
You mentioned resins great for ornamental finishes. If I was to be using the board in the surf would painting with posca pens and clear coating it, be durable under wax/sun/surf?
Thanks!! Posca pens might work for a little bit on a soft too but will rub off pretty quickly. An oil based paint pen will be your best bet on a soft top. Sharpie makes a great oil paint pen. With the oil pens you won’t need a clear coat
I’m making a surfboard shower. I painted the board with Total Boat Wet Edge marine paint. 1 can I use the paint pens now or do I have to sand it 1st ? 2, will the Posca paints be ok on this painted surface. Tia
Oil based paint pens would be the best pen to use. Acrylic might work good enough too but marine paint is oil based. Check out my other video on oil paint pens vs acrylic
Thanks for your response . I really love the colors of the Posca pens. I’m going to try a small spot & see if it adheres. I’m hoping so& then I can spray a clear coat over it. Wish me luck.
@Melissatinelli-ls7km that’s a great way to experiment. You might find it all works fine for what you’re trying to achieve. Good luck and stay inspired 🤙🏼
Do you recommend using the clear acrylic spray if I am going to be using the board all the time? And how long does the spray generally last in protecting the art?
If your painting on the foam it’s best not to put down a primer. The less paint the better especially if you’re going to surf it. The best paint for painting on surfboard foam is nova paint. It “crystallizes “ the least amount
I usually do all my sketches with the fine tip posca. Pencil can be a little tricky to get off. Using an eraser can help but sometimes smears the graphite. Light sand with 320 grit works pretty well. You can also scratch it off with a razor blade. Hope this helps!
I going to resin a skateboard deck I painted with posca pens and acrylic paint. Do I need to do a crystal clear coat first before the resin? I heard that posca bleeds with just resin, but I’m not sure if that’s true. Any info would be helpful… thanks for all your videos!
Do not do a crystal clear coat before doing a resin finish. It will not work. You can resin directly over the paint pens. Polyester Resin will not bond with clear spray acrylic. Epoxy resin might work over spray acrylic but try first. I haven’t had much luck. Posca generally doesn’t bleed in resin but sometimes I do get bleeding on custom dark blues I mix but other than that no posca bleeding under resin. Good luck!
Going to Posca on a new fin. It’s fiberglass with high polish. Thinking of acetone or maybe a very fine grit before painting and then clear coat twice. What do you think?
Hi! Thanks for the video and all the tips! I painted my new board with the Posca paint pens and I really want to make sure that it doesn’t come off when I use it. Is there a particular clear coat you recommend using? Or any other tips for how to make sure there’s enough of the clear coat to protect it?
Any clear spray acrylic will work from Home Depot or hardware store. Only need about 2 light coats. Shake can really well. Spray. Hold can about 12” away from board and keep the spray moving. You don’t want to create a puddle of clear spray. 2 light coats is plenty. Good luck, have fun and stay inspired 🤙🏼
I'm gonna try to paint a 6'0 a buddy just gave me. He had already rustoleum spray painted it all gloss white. It has a few dings I need to fix but after, can I go ahead and just start Spray painting the rails and such, and then detail with posca pens? Any tips for this are appreciated 🙏🤙
You might run into some problems with acrylic over the rustoleum. Try a little area first and see if it bonds. I have had bad results with rustoleum and acrylic pens. Oil based markers will work fine. Have fun, stay inspired 🤙🏼
Sharpe makes great ones but I just received some Artiqo oil based paint markers which seems to have lots of color options. I haven’t tried them out yet but they will work too
Water based will probably not work that great over the oil based rustoleum. It might be ok for what you’re doing but you run the chance of long term peeling and chipping off. Have fun ! 🤙🏼
Hey there, Just wanna ask a few things.... Can i clearcoat the posca drawings with epoxy? Or polyester? Before the coat, do you sand the drawing a bit with 400? And how to clean your board after the drawing but before the coat, assuming aceton doesn't work then...
You can clear coat posca with epoxy or poly. You just can’t use poly resin over an epoxy surfboard. You also don’t need to clean the posca, resins work great right over it. Hope this helps stay inspired 🤙🏼
You don’t clean it. Use clean hands just to wipe it down from dust. It’s what I do. You don’t necessarily have to wipe a board before gloss. You can of course but it’s only really needed if you have a really dirty work environment where overspray is getting on it.
@Welzie Art right now the last question 😉. How long do you wait for a hotcoat? I drew something today. What I see is that my black is completely dry, the red isn't. Whe I go over the red with my finger, some red is giving some red to my finger but it isn't sticky or so (it feels dry).
I just bought a new board that is glossed and I wanted to add a design to it. Is it okay to sand a glossed board? If so, do I sand only the areas I am designing with my paint pen? And after I paint will the clear coat be applied to only the painted areas? Would it match the glossing of the rest of the board? Lol sorry so many questions but I just don’t want to ruin the board!
Hi! If you’re board is glossed you will have to sand the area where you will apply the paint pen. Then you will have to seal it with a spray finish which will not match the gloss coat. You could gloss over the art with resin but that is quite hard and then you would have to polish it. All of this is quite difficult to achieve a high quality finish. An option would be to use oil based pens. They will stay on the gloss coat but their longevity will be short due to no protection from scratches. A surfboard that is glossed is hard to add artwork too, unless you do a lot of sanding and glossing and polishing. I hope I don’t sound discouraging. I don’t want you to ruin the board. Surfboards that don’t have a gloss are easier to paint. One thing you could do is have a local surfboard builder or ding guy sand the side of the board you want to draw on to 320 grit for you. Then you are free to draw all you want and put a finish over your art. Good luck and stay inspired 🤙🏼
Do you paint on the bottom? I used posca pens on the bottom of 2 of my boards and then I used like 3-4 layers of clear coat spray paint. It feels fine to me but I just wanted to know your input on it.
Bottom or top doesn’t matter. When I used to draw on the North Shore pros they always wanted the top for the picture aspect but it’s whatever you want on your board. 3-4 layers of clear coat is plenty. I usually did 2-3 max. Really thin layers is best. Sounds like you nailed it. Have fun. Stay inspired 🤙🏼
hello! i just bought a board and am wanting to draw something small on it - not covering the whole board. would i only need to sand, and put the clear spray paint coat over that one part, or do it to the entire board, even where i didn’t paint anything? thank you :)
Just sand the area which you need to draw. Clear coat just that area as well. If it’s a new board you really don’t need to sand much at all. If it’s a used board just sand enough to where you want to draw has no shiney spots on it. Have fun stay inspired!🤙🏼
I have a video on transferring images that might help. I always recommend doing some actual size drawings on paper to get an idea of scale. Another method is using 2” painters tape to cover the board and draw over that to create a Stencil. Hope that helps! Like and subscribe 🤙🏼
If it’s a used board and you’re patching dings to make the board nice I would recommend watching how to do ding repair videos. There’s a lot to fixing dings
Everything fades over time. I don’t really use those pens so I don’t know for sure. If they say they are archival ink it should last 100 years but it’s hard to know for sure. Especially since paint pens haven’t been around that long. Hope this helps. Stay inspired. Aloha 🤙🏼
@@WelzieArt Thank you. Presently I'm working on a 5ftx6ft canvas using acrylic pens. Hopefully they will last long. The pens I use comes with archival quality inks. Fingers crossed. I will have to guarantee a long lasting artwork to my buyers.
I do recommend a light sand with 320grt sandpaper over the area you would like to draw. Epoxy can react wierd and unpredictable so it’s good to do a couple small posca pen test on it make sure it adheres correctly. You can use a razor blade to erase. Good luck 🤙🏼
