So I’m painting my surfboard now, followed your prep instructions and only wiped with a damp cloth after sanding, painting has been going well so far, but I used neon red Molotov premium on a part of the tail and it has dried into basically chalk that wipes right off, with specs of red dust on the surface. What should I do about this? Wipe it off and paint with another or just spray clear coat over it? Thanks so much in advance
very good point keeping the brand the same. I grabbed a can of molotow when working on a painting a few years ago that was mainly Montana gold and I got a horrible bubbling. Don't mix your drinks or paints, kids...
zombiez If you use the right type of paint it should be fine. No paint job is going to last forever and it will probably come off fastest on the deck, under your wax, which is why I tend to paint the bottom of boards.
Great work. Does the spray paint clear coat really protect the paint from coming off when you use it in the ocean? Or should I just reglass the surf board?

+Mpanada13 It's just a lighter coat of paint - it's super light and bonds with the surface so that your paint sticks better to the board. Once that light coat is dry proceed as normal with a second coat.
Great job. Concerning the paint gets wiped out after use... at what extend and after how long. Is it appropriate to paint the upper side of the board as well as the under?
Noah Hi Noah, the stencil is really easy to make - you just need to get a really wide tip marker and trace a curve around the edge of a small bowl. Remove the bowl and cut along the outside edge of the line you just drew.
Hello Fieldey, love this video!! so keen to paint my mal I've just restored, BUT, i can't find any molotov paints online in AUSTRALIA.. where do you purchase yours from? thanks heaps!
I love your videos! Just a question: is there any particular reason you use spray cans and not airbrush/paint guns? would think airbrushing give more control of the colours than spraycans?
Bit of practice you can get a perfect coat with cans. I was once actually called a liar when I painted some bike parts gold base Candy Apple Red gloss (no clear at that stage) just spray cans and it looked factory painted. A quick sand and clean, did one part again, same result in front of the clown. Run your strokes before and after masking, not to close and continuous sweeps building up gradually so no runs.
great stuff!! i'd like to draw on my skimboard with posca pens but i'm not sure if i really have to use the sandpaper before doing it.. my board is made of carbon fiber and has a coat of resign. can i draw directly on it or do i need to prepare it with the sand paper? and at what point is it enough with the sandpaper? i have no idea what im doing and i really don't want to damage my board...
+Pedro Paixão if you're just using markers you may not need to sand it. But if you do sand it, follow my "how to prepare a surfboard for painting" vid which will help you.
Hey thanks man! Same brand is fine, but a traditional skatedeck will be pretty fiddly for sprays... if you're handy with a can go for it though. Personally I'd use sprays and pens on a skatey.
Fabitalism He's using an X--Ray Super Fat cap to cover the board with black paint at the start, and then to do all the other spraying, he switches the cap to a New Yorker (the skinny looking cap).
The result is awsome, but using that much of spray in a surfboard dosen`t make it more heavy than it actually is? Ignorant question and sorry if there is any grammar mistake. :) Love&Peace from Colombia!
+jack hernandez No worries man! Not noticeably heavier, but I wouldn't advise it if you were a pro surfer or needed an ultra light performance type board. Happy New Year!
This might be a silly questions, I’ve seen one person use a foam roller instead of spray paint. Can you just foam roll acrylic paint on and coat with acrylic spray paint?
Awesome work! I have a Mirage Fysh 5 foot 8 inch Stringer Soft Surfboard, and was wondering if you could give me some tips on how best to paint that type of surfboard? What materials are best to use (posca pens, spray paint, etc.), should I glass/sand/remove wax? How can I prevent the paint from fading?
Hi Vincent, Dan made the stencil by tracing around a small bowl (actually his cats' bowl) with a wide tip marker - he then cut around the outside edge of the marker lines to create the stencil.
Hey, I think I followed all of the steps on the above video...but my colours ended up all "sandy" so that when I rubbed them the colour would come off like sand. I used Molotow Neon colours. Full explanation here: www.swellnet.com/forums/shaping-bay/242671 Can anyone help me salvage this project or tell me why it ended up all sandy? Many many thanks
Drew Burrell I'm so sorry for this late reply - stupid TH-cam had your comment in the spam folder! I'm also sorry you had to go through that, your board looked amazing! The problem was the neon cans - I've used them once before and had mixed results - sometimes the sandy texture and sometimes they go on fine, it could be that they need to be shaken longer, I'll have to look into it. The normal colours are all good, but those neons and surfboards don't seem to play nicely together... what did you end up doing?
Fieldey TV Hey. Thanks for getting back to me. It's a shame about the neons.... I ended up lightly sanding the neons and most of the "sand" came off - leaving a fine orange left. I then bought another can and had a slightly better result (even after a huge amount of shaking). Most of it stuck this time - but still a little sandy on parts. A light rub. Then a clear-coat and the board looks pretty good. I can't comment on durability as I can't surf for another few weeks with broken ribs and a collarbone.... BUT I would not recommend neons if you are precious about the finish. picture here: postimg.org/image/l2uqmvkt5/
You know what works really well, you boil some water turn it off stick your paint cans in the hot water for about 3 minutes, shake them up really good, put them back in the hot water for another couple minutes, Shake It Up and spray them. The paint almost dries instantly
Beautiful vibes, very helpful and genuinely good video ... one question though, does anyone else think that painting a big fish design on the bottom of you surf board or anywhere on a surf board for that matter might actually invite a certain unwanted and huge “predator” directly to your doorstep so to speak ... if you catch my wave ... I mean REALLY😱
Hahaha! Of course it must cross people's minds... but in reality I don't think the shark would be able to make the jump between a stylised painting of a fish and a real fish. Besides, seen from below, the board will be just a silhouette and the shark will probably think: "what a tasty looking, slow moving little seal/turtle/interesting-thing-in-the-water".
lollllllllll i spray painted my surf board black and took it to the markets and at the markets they can spay paint anything and they worte my name on it in yellow for $20
Great white sharks liked this video
Very cool stick
Wow now that's a tutorial. Thank you for providing all the necessary info to complete.
I am very impressed. You are very talented. Thank you for a very informative video.
Wow!! Amazing job!!!
Congrats man!!!
You turned it into a giant shark lure! All joking aside, looks awesome.
Breathtaking!
Wow that was awesome!!!!!
Super down to earth
Excellent video!!!
I am impressed. Realllllly great work!
Wow so beautiful!
Good work!
Thank you very much for your video! Help me a lot!!!
Nice job !
Wow...your talent is awesome. I have been wanting to hang my board above my couch for decor and this is the perfect video.
I paint fishing lures with the same stencil technical. I might do my snow skiis and helmet!!
Really nice
Rake Loves this!
nice work
TOTALLY AWESOME
meu filho e apaixonado por pinturas de prancha s de surf
Sick!sick! Siiiick! Loved it
Sick man!! You are good!!
amazing talent brother!! thanks for share it!!!

That's so refreshing to see people being creative rather than lazy cool thanks😎
my god...masterpiece!
Have you ever designed a board like a butterfly? I would love to see this or
Maybe get some tips on how to do mine. I love your work! Awesome job
Espectacular!!!
very good point keeping the brand the same. I grabbed a can of molotow when working on a painting a few years ago that was mainly Montana gold and I got a horrible bubbling.
Don't mix your drinks or paints, kids...
+slippinggnome Hahaha yep! You live and you learn ;)
Can you do the top and clear it , and wax over it or will it peel off 👍 looks great
Should stay good for a long time, but nothing lasts forever.
i was thinking about painting the deck. will the paint stay on after its coated with wax again?
zombiez If you use the right type of paint it should be fine. No paint job is going to last forever and it will probably come off fastest on the deck, under your wax, which is why I tend to paint the bottom of boards.
Great job!!
Can you tell me if after paint you've added some clear lacquer or glassed the surfboard please?
Asier conde mendizabal Yep - we cover the boards with clear coat spray
thanks a lot !
Great work. Does the spray paint clear coat really protect the paint from coming off when you use it in the ocean? Or should I just reglass the surf board?
phreshelements Yes it does - works really well. I wouldn't reglass, it'd be pointless and add too much weight to the board no?
thanks. Time to get to work on my board. keep up the good work.
Good luck with it! Tag #FieldeyTV on insty if your on it so I can take a look

Hi there I was wondering what paint you used?! Thanks
can you please do a tutorial on the making of the stencil?
whats the first "tech-coat" you put on? just any kind of coating spray? cheers
+Mpanada13 It's just a lighter coat of paint - it's super light and bonds with the surface so that your paint sticks better to the board. Once that light coat is dry proceed as normal with a second coat.

What brand/type clear coat do you recommend if I used sharpie to decorate my board?
Hmm... I haven't used sharpies on a board myself, but try Krylon clear? I'd test it on a small area first as sometimes markers can smear.
Please, please. How can I make the stencile. I want to start a wall hanger.
how do you make the stencil cut outs? what kind of paper do you use?
Just a thick card will do, but you can buy special waxed stencil paper at art stores which is good if you want to use it multiple times.
THAT IS AWESOME! I want to buy. 😀
+Josh Mair I wish you could but sadly this board has gone... You'll have to paint your own one!
From Hawaii,
That was Sick Brah!
Danky dope!
Did you buy the stencil or make it? And if made it how? Thanks
Noah Hi Noah, the stencil is really easy to make - you just need to get a really wide tip marker and trace a curve around the edge of a small bowl. Remove the bowl and cut along the outside edge of the line you just drew.
Fieldey TV Correction: along the *inside* of the marker line ;) The maker line will become part of the stencil.
How’s all of this affect the surf board when actually surfing?
Hello Fieldey, love this video!! so keen to paint my mal I've just restored, BUT, i can't find any molotov paints online in AUSTRALIA.. where do you purchase yours from? thanks heaps!
Have you checked the Molotow Australia store? molotow.com.au/ Drop Clarke (the Molotow Aus rep) an email and find out from him. :)
I love your videos! Just a question: is there any particular reason you use spray cans and not airbrush/paint guns? would think airbrushing give more control of the colours than spraycans?
Yep you're right, but cans are waaay more available and cheap to use for most people.
Bit of practice you can get a perfect coat with cans. I was once actually called a liar when I painted some bike parts gold base Candy Apple Red gloss (no clear at that stage) just spray cans and it looked factory painted. A quick sand and clean, did one part again, same result in front of the clown.
Run your strokes before and after masking, not to close and continuous sweeps building up gradually so no runs.
what do you make your stencil. Like a giant piece of card-stock.
Happy Man Yep, or else you can use cardboard.
great stuff!! i'd like to draw on my skimboard with posca pens but i'm not sure if i really have to use the sandpaper before doing it.. my board is made of carbon fiber and has a coat of resign. can i draw directly on it or do i need to prepare it with the sand paper? and at what point is it enough with the sandpaper? i have no idea what im doing and i really don't want to damage my board...
+Pedro Paixão if you're just using markers you may not need to sand it. But if you do sand it, follow my "how to prepare a surfboard for painting" vid which will help you.
and do i need to clear coat it?
Pedro Paixão yes
It looks awesome!! What type of paint would you use for an epoxy board?
+Andrew Finch Acrylic based sprays would probably work well for epoxy
shark magnet
This sick as usual. Would you recommend the same brand and technique for longboards/skateboards?
Hey thanks man! Same brand is fine, but a traditional skatedeck will be pretty fiddly for sprays... if you're handy with a can go for it though. Personally I'd use sprays and pens on a skatey.
Thanks for the advice. I've tagged a few buildings so I'm not too bad with a spray can. ;)
This is flipping cool! Great job man, it looks insane!
Fieldey TV Do you perhaps know where you can get Molotow paint in NSW, Central Coast ?
Hi Vincent - here's the list of Aussie stockists, you may have to mail order from them: molotow.com.au/stockists/
Fieldey TV Thanks Fieldy ;)
Fieldey TV I have an idea for a surfboard spray tutorial >super nebula< i reckon it would look sick on a board.
Nice.
ABSOLUTELY STUNNING!!!! That's the first video I saw of your channel and I must say, it's incredible!!! You have a new sub here :D
Welcome!! Great to have you on board! Feel free to visit me on Instagram: instagram.com/fieldey/ to stay in the loop
Can you tell me which exact colour you were using? (molotow names)?
Hey man - Dan tells you all the colours in the clip - if you're not sure of a particular one let me know and I'll look it up.
Fieldey TV Would be really nice if you could tell me the exact colours..
Fabitalism No problems - they are: Dare Orange, Toast Signal Black, Traffic Red, Light Orange, Transparent Black and Dark Riviera. Good luck!
Fieldey TV Thanks Fieldey, i appreciate that!
Fabitalism No problems - have fun!
where can I buy this paint in Bali peeps
What kind of Cap are you using in this video?
Hi Fabitalism, Dan tells you the ones to use in the clip, but I think it's a combo of fat caps and New Yorkers for the gradients
Fieldey TV
i don't understand if he is using a "new york fat cap" or a normal "fat cap"?
Fabitalism He's using an X--Ray Super Fat cap to cover the board with black paint at the start, and then to do all the other spraying, he switches the cap to a New Yorker (the skinny looking cap).
but it's a "New York Fat Cap"? or do you call it just "New yorker"?
Fabitalism Just a New Yorker is fine
did you have to sand your board before painting
Yes - did you check out my video about prepping the board? There's a process you need to do to get it ready for painting.
It looks amazing!!! Gr8 job!!! :-)
Sir. I would like to take the time out of my day to let you know I Love Your Rabbit Painting.... Keep-on-Kreat'N...

Awesome surfboard! I love it. Can I buy this stencil/template anywhere? I would reaaally like to use it :)
+Susanne Posma Sorry lady! It's easy enough to make at home, you just need to trace around a small bowl to get the circles right.
Savy XD

Hi Vincent,
Dan made the stencil by tracing around a small bowl (actually his cats' bowl) with a wide tip marker - he then cut around the outside edge of the marker lines to create the stencil.

sick design...looks awesome..i just don't want to look like bait while surfing
+Fieldey TV: Art & Tutorials Awesome art! I'm just a little worried that it's not going to be a very efficient shark repellent... O.o
+Tinkering Night Owl World's Biggest Shark Lure ;)
do you know we're I can buy a stencil
make your own. it's easy
Thanks
grande....
How many cans of paint did you use to compete your spray job?
We used 6 different colours, but one can will easily cover a surfboard, so we had heaps left over.
Just what a surfer needs. A surfboard that looks like a fish. The sharks will think it's delicious.
I've tried it myself - it IS delicious, I hope they like it too
Shark Billboard!!!
Sharks will love this!!
Never paint ur board to look like a giant fish! Shark are more likely to go for it!! But that is still a sick paintjob
Mitchell Thibeault sharks attack surfers because they’re curious of what the board is.
You know what works really well, you boil some water turn it off stick your paint cans in the hot water for about 3 minutes, shake them up really good, put them back in the hot water for another couple minutes, Shake It Up and spray them. The paint almost dries instantly
Great tip! I think they'd be pretty freaking hot to handle tho?
@@FieldeyTV you don't want to boil it, just let it sit in the warm water

I'd like to prep you
Dan says thank you, but he's already in a committed relationship.
Looks like a shark lure!
Noice. Even noicer 'n noice.
Hope you don't surf in any sharky spots, those colors and that design look just like fish scales. If I was a shark I would so hit that.
Do you want to get eaten!
And people wonder why shraks try to eat them..
Great now your surfboard looks like a fishing lure ......Shark Bait!
thats how you get attacked by a shark
What if the board is a soft top made by gnaraloo (gnaraloo fatty)... it's a different type of surface
RCVR I haven't tried painting a soft top board so I'm not sure how it would work.
