Surfboard Makeover Using Spray Paint

  • Giving the paint design of the first board I ever shaped a makeover using spray paint. I cleaned the board with a wax comb, Sticky Bumps wax remover and acetone. I sanded with 220 grit sandpaper to help the spray paint stick to the board. I used 80 grit sandpaper to remove the original paint design and then applied a new layer of 4oz fiberglass with laminating resin and then sealed it with sanding resin. Sanded with repair patch with 220 grit sandpaper and then made the new paint design with Liquitex acrylic spray paints. Lastly I used a gloss clear acrylic spray paint to seal the paint.

      I haven't tried it myself because I didn't want to add the extra weight of an additional resin layer. But as long as your using acrylic spray paints and not oil based, it should work. Lots of guys do airbrush work on the foam blank before lamination. They key is water based paints. If you try it out, let me know how it goes!

      try looking for a used board online, maybe Craigslist or eBay has member feedback ratings. Heck, as long as you have a friend with you to meet up, maybe see if someone has a board they’re willing to part with for practically nothing...you’d probably want like a 6’4-7’6 egg or fun board to start. around 20-21.5” wide and 2.5-2.75” thick ...some surf shops sell their old soft top boards after they’re done using them for lessons as well

    Thanks a lot !!! Did a nice design on one of my old board that was seriously turning yellow. Sanded it with 220 grit, put three layers of spray paint, three layers of varnish, and although it was my very first time using spray paint, it turned out great !
    Now I'm wondering : if I ever need to unwax it, to replace the pad or just clean it, is it risky to use a wax comb on the said varnish ? I guess at least acetone is forbidden now

    I'm planning on spray painting mine soon, and after some testing on random surfaces I had some doubts.
    How long should you wait to apply the acrylic varnish to seal the paint?
    When I used as much paint as you did I would get dripping and a thicker layer of paint after drying. Are those a problem or should I not be shy about how much paint to use?

    • @BendheimBoards
      @BendheimBoards  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wait until the previous coat has dried. Try doing thinner coats and more of them to avoid the drips.

    Have you ever done a hot coat over the spray paint? I’ve tried twice to put PU sanding resin over the liquitex spray paint (waited 2 days to make sure it was dry) and it bubbled the paint both times below the resin. The spray coat works for me but it still doesn’t quite feel the same as a resin coat. Curious if you’ve ever been successful with it.

    • @BendheimBoards
      @BendheimBoards  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the board is in good condition, you can just sand it with 220 so that the paint sticks better. No need to do any more than that. Check out my other spray paint video as an example. Use acrylic paints or water based paints rather than oil based.

    Great channel first of all. I got a Broken board, it is almost new yet it is really light but at the same time it feels really weak, i mean almost feels like it will break by looking at it. So here is my question is there a way to reinforce the whole board after fixing the broken part? I mean can i sand the whole thing and add an extra layer of fiber glass, top and bottom, with epoxy resin over the polyester resin? Would that work? Or should I just take all the glass off and re-laminate? Thanks!

    • @BendheimBoards
      @BendheimBoards  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s a ton of work either way but if you want to put in the time, yes you can strip it and refiberglass or you can sand down and add another layer of fiberglass. It will add some weight with the extra layer. You can put epoxy over poly resin but I try to stick to the same material the board was made of.

    • @BendheimBoards
      @BendheimBoards  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks! Yes the green tape is a more expensive high quality masking tape you can get from an auto parts store. It works better with paints and resins to prevent bleed through and left over residue. The tan tape is just your basic commercial masking tape. I use that for the other areas so I don’t have to waste the expensive stuff.

      If you were planning to do a gloss coat then go for it, otherwise the extra layer of resin will add more weight to the board you could avoid by just sealing it with a clear coat spray. Or just starting the build, you could spray directly onto the foam blank before lamination.

      Water based spray paint is best and also can be applied to the foam and covered with resin. Oil based paints can’t be used on the foam and are more likely to crack over time if applied to a glassed board.

    Just a random question could you add a top coat of resin instead of spray on clear coat? Just to give it that high gloss look? I know that’s not what you were going for. would that work on an old board that’s been sprayed over?

    • @BendheimBoards
      @BendheimBoards  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      For the resin drip I use Indasa yellow masking tape or green automotive tape. For the spray paint I use commercial grade masking tape (cheaper than the others). You need the high quality tape for the resin drips otherwise the sticky residue will get on your board. For logos, use rice paper and just print directly onto it from your computer printer.

    • @BendheimBoards
      @BendheimBoards  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No it will last. I did acrylic spray this time because it’s lighter than adding a layer of resin to the entire board. And it’s less time consuming. No, I didn’t sand the clear coat.

    2 questions:
    - Did you felt the board a bit heavier since you painted all of its surface? Or you didnt felt any difference at all? (I wonder if it affects the surfboard performance)
    - Does the paint comes out easily after a while? Or we dont have to worry about the painting coming out at all after we gloss spray it?
    thank you!

    There are several areas on my 20 yr old 9'2" rails that are becoming dangerously close to cloth. Also there are many, many ding repair areas also on the rails, nose and tail. I have been told that it wouldn't be a bad idea to sand and apply a new coat of sanding resin along the rails, nose, and tail. If I were going to do this, I intend to hide the ugly with a color rail band. Sherwin Williams says they could exact match a color that is on the deck of the board in acrylic if I were to bring it to them. It's that or totally different color with spray paint. The questions are these: Can I apply a coat of sanding resin over the paint without some type of bad reaction or do I need a certain type of paint? Also, any type of spray paint or specific type that would work best? Just need to make sure. Thanks

    Hey tanner, I’m in a bit of a predicament. Long story short, I did a lam, and decided to spray paint without seal coating first. do you think I need to put a clear coat (spray paint) on before an epoxy rein seal coat? Or rather, do you think a seal coat of epoxy resin alone will bond to the spray paint/fiberglass on the initial lam with no issues ?

    • @davidschindewolf

    • @BendheimBoards
      @BendheimBoards  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, as long as you don't sand into the fibergalss cloth and expose the weave you'll be fine. If you do expose the weave in a few spots, just paint on a little resin and then sand flat, then move onto painting. Fiberglass gives strength so as long as your board's integrity is still good, no need to add more layers.
