Summery of elements of design
The elements of design form the foundational language of visual expression in artwork, imparting depth, meaning, and cohesion to the creative process. Each element serves a distinct purpose, contributing to the overall impact of the composition.
Lines provide structure and guide the viewer's eye, while shapes and forms establish the visual vocabulary, transforming a blank canvas into a nuanced exploration of space. The strategic use of color evokes emotions and sets the tone, creating a dynamic interplay that resonates with the observer.
Texture engages the senses, inviting tactile and visual exploration, while value establishes the play of light and shadow, adding dimension and realism. Contrast injects vitality, drawing attention to focal points and creating visual tension, while balance ensures a harmonious distribution of visual weight, maintaining equilibrium.
Emphasis acts as a storyteller, directing focus and narrative progression, and rhythm introduces a dynamic cadence, infusing movement into static images. Unity, the culmination of these elements, weaves them together seamlessly, transforming diverse components into a coherent whole.
In essence, the elements of design serve as the artist's toolkit, allowing for the deliberate crafting of visual experiences. Their thoughtful interplay not only captivates the viewer but also conveys the artist's intent, fostering a rich and meaningful dialogue between the creator and the audience.
Read Below for the list of the elements of design:
The elements of design in art are fundamental components that artists use to create visual compositions. They include:
Line: The basic element that marks the path of a moving point through space. Lines can vary in length, width, direction, and character, influencing the overall feel of an artwork.
Shape: A two-dimensional area defined by lines or changes in color. Shapes can be geometric (circles, squares) or organic (natural forms).
Form: The three-dimensional equivalent of shape, conveying a sense of volume and depth. Artists use shading and perspective to create the illusion of form in two-dimensional artworks.
Space: The area around, between, or within components of an artwork. Artists manipulate space to create depth, perspective, and a sense of spatial relationships.
Color: The visual sensation produced by the way an object reflects or emits light. Colors can be primary (red, blue, yellow), secondary (orange, green, purple), or tertiary (mixtures of primary and secondary colors).
Texture: The surface quality of an artwork, which can be actual (tactile) or implied (visual). Artists use texture to evoke emotions or add interest to their compositions.
Value: The lightness or darkness of tones or colors. Value helps create contrast and defines the form and structure of objects in a composition.
Contrast: The arrangement of opposite elements to create visual interest. Contrast can be achieved through differences in color, value, size, or other visual elements.
Balance: The distribution of visual weight in an artwork. Artists use symmetrical, asymmetrical, or radial balance to achieve a sense of equilibrium.
Emphasis: The focal point or center of interest in an artwork. Artists use emphasis to guide the viewer's attention and create hierarchy within a composition.
Rhythm: The repetition or alternation of elements to create a sense of movement or visual flow in an artwork.
Unity: The cohesive quality that makes all elements in an artwork feel harmonious and complete. Unity ensures that all parts work together to convey a single, integrated message.

Hey!! Soo in the end you gotta buy a bunch of white pens or more of the ones you want to make the mix from. Right?
What markers would stay permanently on ceramic or porcelain; same question for mirror or glass Your videos are very clear. Thank you bless you 💛
Hi i can use the acrylic pepo on the fins?
cool video thanks
Thanks!
Hello, I'm decorating a ceiling medallion and I've spray painted the base. I've used acrylic paint and also some alcohol and oil based paint markers. Would this work to seal and protect?
What can I use to protect and seal art done with alcohol based markers?
I remember when paint pens were a rarity. Or homemade from sharpies or something. It's rad to see em everywhere now. The influence "street art" has had is phenomanonol
Me too. Some many colors and tip options it’s amazing
I’m trying to make magnets out of bagels and I need to turn the plastic so they last.

Hi Welzie, I make wood lamp shades and wood lamp bases. As an experiment, I tried coloring a base with sharpie acrylic markers and after it was dry I sprayed it with rustoleum clear gloss 2x. The black marker ran a little over the next color, which caused a problem. I scraped it with a razor blade and it created a little divert and this was difficult to sand and not scratch the finish next to it. Coloring the divert and matching the area was difficult. Any suggestions?
Very valuable information. Bought the book. Thank you!
This was SO HELPFUL as I plan for my first fair in a few months. Very valuable information. Thank you!
hi there! thank you for this video! What would you recommend using after engraving on cast acrylic and then filling the engraving with acrylic markers? please keep in mind that the protective layer that comes on the acrylic sheet is still in tact, except for where it was engraved.
I bought these same paint markers and click shut (as hard as I can) everyone dried out in a month, I can hear it’s full, what do I do? I really hate them and the waist of money. Please help
Helpful video. Thanks. But how would you anticipate how many people will go into your booth, or how many might buy?
Thanks! Good advice!
This was very helpful thank you!

Thank you!! I picked some up and I'm using it now.
Awesome
How long to let posca pens dry b4 2part epoy res? Im doing on wood btw.
Sorry for late replay, but as soon as posca isn’t shiny and wet it’s good to go. Good luck
@@WelzieArt thx ima got like 24 hrs only bc ive had em run w liquitex gloss so ima go 24,thanks good to know from actual life of expierience you have
Wish i could post a pic of what im doing!
Does it work on paper
Probably. Just don’t spray too much or it will soak the paper
i have all posca pen
Will this work on fabric
I have not tried it
Thank you! This really helps me out!!! Lots of info all summed up! I am a fairly new artist and I'm always looking for ways to get quality prints at a low cost. I don't go for quantity because it gives me anxiety! Lol thanks again ❤
You’re welcome! The printing game is a lot to learn.
This is very helpful, thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
what's your take on downloadable prints?
I don’t do them. I like tangible so I stay clear of nft type stuff
im painting some plastic storage containers with just basic acrylic paint, would this work?
It will work for a short time but the paint will eventually peel off
Hi Late train here brah! Can i use this on poscas then 2part epoxt resin after ?
Epoxy might work over the spray but try it first. I know poly resin doesn’t work over the spray enamel
@@WelzieArt thanks will do
I'm a new Art teacher and students have used posca markers on white tiles. I was told to bake the tiles to set the markers, but the colours went from very vibrant to very dull. So disappointed! If I used this spray, would I still need to bake them, to keep them scratch and weather proof? Would it be safe to bake them with this clear coat on top? Many thanks :)
You’ll have to experiment. This spray will keep bright colors but I don’t know about sticking it in the oven. Good luck
Love the video! Does this work on fabric? I'm using acrylic paint markers on a t shirt and I was wondering how would the spray work on it.
I don’t know but I don’t think so. Always try experiment fist
Dude, hope you survived the fires. 🙏
We did. Been a crazy year
Ruined my gold gilding paint (oil based)
That’s why we always experiment before applying to finished artwork 👍🏼
What about painting the leather shoes ?
I don’t know a lot about paint pens on leather. Sorry
How protective is the Rust-Oleum spray? My mural will be on display outdoors. Will it protect my posca paint for a year or two?
I haven’t done a 2 yr outdoor test. Always best to just use paint outside and not pens in my opinion
I bought a new drum set with a matt finish. I want to give it a glossy finish. Would this work?
I wouldn’t unless it’s a cheap drum set. Might not come out as nice as you want
Great advice much appreciated
You are welcome, glad to help!
Excellent points, thanks for the advice! 🌺
Thanks!
Great information Welzie. Thank you for this very enjoyable video and your others. I have just discovered you. Do you use only white matting for your prints? Also I made a limited edition of 5 Giclée prints of a painting I did. This is the first time I've done this. I was told that it is not professional to make any more prints after you do a limited edition. I had researched what limited editions were all about and thought I understood what was ok. Can an artist do second editions with more prints? Apparently I have no idea. What is the right protocol for prints? Can you do a limited edition with your signature and a certificate of authenticity for the limited prints but still be able to do as many cards and smaller prints as you like without the signature and certificate? Wouldn't having images of the work in circulation increase the value of the limited editions as more people would know of it? I would love to know your opinion.
Big question but basically if you do a limited run say on canvas you should not do another run on canvas. Postcards shirts or whatever are fine but can’t add to another canvas run
@@WelzieArt Thank you very much for your response. So when you say 'a run' does that mean a limited edition? Also when you say 'on canvas' - is that a print on a canvas? I apologize for asking this as I did the 5 prints on Giclée - is that considered to be canvas? If I did a bunch of prints on some other surface like 16inches x16 inches (or even bigger) on some type of paper unsigned would that be acceptable? or is the limit postcard sized only?
What clear coating can I use on my art work on a metal exterior door acrylic paint?
I would do spray enamel like the one in the video.
Can I use an oil paint pen for drawing on a freshly sanded guitar?
Sanded guitar can go with acrylic or oil
What Paint pens will be good for vinyl figures?
Vinyl is plastic so definitely go with oil.
Love it, great video. I'm inspired to figure out this print thing.
Also your printer recommendation in the info section is non-existent! What printer?
Awesome! Make some prints!
@phillipschmidtpottery canon pixima pro 100
When using card reader do you add tax to the cost?
Yes. There is an option in card reader to automatically add it up
can i use this on a4 paper printed a picture ?
It might wrinkle the paper. Just experiment first
Hi thanks for the info in this video! I used acrylic paint on the inside of a door and I need to seal it. Should I use this product to seal it? Or is using a spray can a bad idea on a door? Thanks!
Anything that size and inside I would use paint on clear acrylic. No fumes and dries quick
@@WelzieArt ok ty!
I’ve been using oil based sharpies for autographs like pictures and posters what do you prefer from your experience? I want the best outcome
Oil based sharpie is by far the best for signatures
@@WelzieArt thank you so much! I’m a big horror collector 😁
If I use the acrylic sealant on outside of a window will this make it last in the rain. Would it be easy for customer of shop to get it off though
Don’t spray it if you want it to come off. Can remove with razor blade
I don't think the 300 buck ATM limit is the case anymore. I have drawn out 600 at a time at BofA numerous times!
That’s great news. Raise your prices! Shows how old I am
@@WelzieArt I am in my sixth decade of life. Bachelor in musical theater and a minor in art. I never did more with art outside of theater but have met a young promising artist and have had the spark of desire after we talked about concepts and collaborating on works. Have you ever done a painting which you painted it WITH someone? We've never heard of it but have a concept that we would like to try it. This is why I was on your site. Learning, after we create our art, how to get it out to as many eyes as we can. I really enjoyed the video and will be back to learn your opinion about other aspects of the business! Thank you! And...uh...shows how old you are? So do I have you beat at 54? I remember when the limit for ATMs was 200! 😂
what is the difference between Acrylic based marker vs Water based paint marker? Posca is water based but it is refered as Acrylic but sharpie water based paint markers are not referred as acrylic. Why?
I’m not exactly sure why it’s like that. If it comes off with water consider it having the same elements of acrylic and all the same rules apply. If it doesn’t come off with water the oil based rules apply
How do i make purple with posca? Because i have the 8 posca pack qnd theres no purple
Posca does have purple. 2 options. A darker one and a lighter one. If you need a real light purple you can drop some purple into your white pen. You can use wet into wet mixing technique to get purple if you’re not mixing up your own. I have videos on that. I think it’s “coloring in your artwork
