I hadn't considered the downside of overpricing your art as you mentioned. Thank you for that perspective! However, I do think its the lesser of two evils to lower your pricing over time than selling stuff cheap. Far too many artists price there art too low for a variety of reasons and continue this bad habit of not charging what they are worth.

I've had this happen so many times and it's always frustrating. My usual response ultimately amounts to "then don't buy it" in the nicest way I can put it, but people like this are constant.

We had a little guest book out that people could write themselves. Asking for an email at purchase is another easy was. You can also do an email raffle where they can put their email in a bowl and at the end of the event can pull a name. Lots of ways to get emails. Just don’t be afraid to ask. If they say no it’s not that big of deal and the email wouldn’t have been useful anyway
As a relatively new artist in the grand scheme of things (and just applied to my first show) this was really great! Thanks so much for the practical tips. I haven't even done a show yet and I have a bit of nervousness about it already! Really great video!
Thanks! Stoked you’re getting yourself out there! The nervousness will always be there just in different forms. Only worry about what you have control over. The hardest show is your first one so just keep at it!! Stay inspired, aloha
@@WelzieArt that’s great advice, thanks again! As a question, did you ever worry about running out of what you’d consider your ‘better/best’ pieces needing to try and sell the ones that were just ok?
Lol of course! Prints of the best pieces always help so make sure you get a good image of your pieces. As far as the mediocre pieces… they will just pile up. I have stacks of pieces that never got much love. I’ve probably thrown away more pieces than some other artists make. You learn what becomes a good seller by doing the markets and getting good feedback from your audience. If 1/10 is a winner, figure out what made that piece work so it can get to 2/10 then 3/10. Not all pieces will be a hit but just make sure you’re learning along the way so the bad pieces can serve a purpose
Hey there. Keep coming back to your vid! You’ve. Got so much energy. It comes through in your vids. My show is a month out now and I’m having difficulty figuring out a display set up that doesn’t take up the whole inside of the tent, which is what my display was originally going to be. What I wanted to know is how much weight do you think the frame of the pop-up tent, is the kind that I have like the canopy, can bear?
Hi! Thanks for the feedback! It’s ok to take up all your tent space. As long as people have room to move and view your work. I’m not sure how much weight your pop up can hold but I wouldn’t think more than 35 lbs. you might be able to add some reinforcements to your pop up. If you have the ability I would highly recommend setting your booth up once or twice before your first show. It will help so much. Good luck!! Have fun and stay inspired 🤙🏼
I just saw your TH-cam video it’s been 2years that you put out this video. As I was looking for what it like to sale at a Art festival and made it easy for me to understand. I have a question? Is it okay to sale Ai artwork?
You can try selling ai artwork but good luck. Most people arnt interested in buying artwork that is not made by an artist. I’ve seen people try it with no success. Better to just create paintings yourself
I'm wanting to start getting prints made, I already had my collection photographed for prints but all the sites are sooo expensive. Any suggestions as to the best sites to print from? They cost so much and I don't see much margin for profit at all!
I have a lot of info of this and I’ll try making a video soon. I get a lot of questions about this topic. I recommend printing small 8x10 prints on your own to help make it a lot more affordable. I use a cannon 1000 and it amazing. It uses same ink as the high end printers.
Nice, clean, and very helpful presentation! I participated only in one art fair so far, years ago, and want to plunge in to it, doing shows full time. Your tips are very valuable, so I subscribed. Thank you!
Thank you! It’s greatly appreciated!! It’s amazing how doing shows can really propel your art career forward. Dedicating to a lot of shows will launch you to the next level. Have fun and stay inspired 🤙🏼
Great advise. My first art fair I couldn't get access to the wifi so my square wouldn't work. Have you had this problem? Luckily people had cash on them.
Oh yeah. I’ve had that problem. My solution was a hotspot with the iPhone. Kinda the only way around it. Keep those batteries charged up because a hotspot draws a lot more power. First art fair though. Congratulations for doing it. If they had cash that means you sold some work. Great job. Get better. Keep improving. Stay inspired, aloha 🤙🏼
Thank you for the words of encouragement. I sell on etsy which I do find easier so I am easing my way into fairs. Oh a hot spot that's the way around it! Thanks for the tip. @@WelzieArt
Man this is so helpful! I literally took seven pages of notes and replayed this a few times. I feel so much better knowing what to expect from someone that is actually doing it. I do have a question though! I have a Nissan frontier/truck, 4-door, was wondering if this would be ideal because I have never seen anyone set up before. My initial thought was to work up to buying a mini van or something, but wasn’t sure how people get their work to the show in regards to where you park, etc. Do you believe this is ideal? And also, do you have to carry all your stuff to the tent for certain shows? Or can you park next to your area and unload and set up, and then park elsewhere? I know this depends on the show, but what has been your experience? I’m trying to make this as easy as possible on myself if I ever have to work a show alone, and these are just thoughts I’ve been nervous to ask someone at a show.
Great question. 4 door truck is perfect. Keep important stuff inside. Less important stuff outside. I used a 4 door truck for years but ended up renting a U-Haul for all my stuff. Don’t buy a minivan just for shows. Use what you have and figure it out from there. U-Haul is cheap and easy. Shows often allow you to drive up for 1-2 hours to your booth prior to the show. Easy to unload and set up if can make it in one trip (hence a big box truck so you don’t have to make 2 trips) if you have to walk a ways from parking to booth it’s best to get a hand cart or dolly. Remember that you won’t know what you need until you do it. Don’t worry about what would be ideal and what you think you should get. Do a show with what you have and make adjustments from there. Great art will be more important than a truck or van. First couple shows are learning. Don’t spend too much money so you don’t have that to stress about. Im stoked the video helped. Have fun, stay inspired and good luck.
@@WelzieArt I am in my sixth decade of life. Bachelor in musical theater and a minor in art. I never did more with art outside of theater but have met a young promising artist and have had the spark of desire after we talked about concepts and collaborating on works. Have you ever done a painting which you painted it WITH someone? We've never heard of it but have a concept that we would like to try it. This is why I was on your site. Learning, after we create our art, how to get it out to as many eyes as we can. I really enjoyed the video and will be back to learn your opinion about other aspects of the business! Thank you! And...uh...shows how old you are? So do I have you beat at 54? I remember when the limit for ATMs was 200! 😂
How do you package paintings for customers at a festival? Do you just hand it to them or do you wrap it and place it in a bag? I am trying to find a professional way present the art to a customer.
Great question! A lot depends on the size and weight. The lighter the piece the less you need to wrap it. My originals used to be heavy and so I had pretty snug boxes for the piece. The boxes were great for transporting them but also to let the collector use it to take it home. Standardization of your artwork size will help make this easier. I would have 6 sizes of originals and had boxes for each size. I would make a template of a box then use that to make boxes out of whatever cardboard I had. Matted prints can be given with no bag or a paper bag. Canvas giclee can have a box or wrapped in paper. Sometimes collectors don’t need a thing. Sometimes a complete pack job. I could go on and on. Hope this helps. Stay inspired
@@WelzieArt so you made your own box, and that's what the buyer carries off? Does it have a handle, or do you then put that in a sack or bag? So many things to consider, it's overwhelming.😊
Thanks for the video., All good stuff. Will you make a video for pros? i.e. those of us who have done fairs for a couple of years but need to be better at handling objections in person, etc. Handling the same stupid question one gets asked every 30 seconds in 3 days and stay sane., etc. Those of us who are mildly successful but want to make it to the next level. i.e. How to up your game to earn $100K + at fairs?
Great suggestion thank you. I’ll start putting together some notes to make a video. Check out my other videos on sales and prints etc that might help. Stay inspired 🤙🏼
Usually we don’t bag matted prints. Original artwork is usually placed in the bubble wrap that we brought it to the show in. If you must provide bags or packages keep super simple. Nothing custom. It’s expensive and time consuming. Keep it simple. Simple is more “eco friendly”
Hi Amy! I don’t have a video yet but I do agree that would be helpful. I talk about it on a little bit on my podcast on TH-cam but I should make one solely discussing price points because they are so important to the growth of your art business. Make sure you subscribe so when I do make that video you can see it. Aloha. Stay inspired 🤙🏼
Hello!!! I am planning on hosting a art festival in the Caribbean (my home island) I plan on showing this video to the artist, but I would love some advice on hosting, is that possible?
I'm applying for my first street fair in a few weeks. When setting up does it ever happen where you can park your car in front of your booth then move your car when you're done? Or would I always have to carry everything over?
Great question. Often you get an hour window before the event to pull your car up to the booth to drop off. Then you can unload. Make sure this is possible by reading the rules and time for the the event. I have been to events where you can’t pull up to your booth. So make sure to read the rules to your event
Yes and yes. We do a collector’s list where we ask people for emails. Also have business cards and postcards size marketing collateral for people to take home with our contact info
Great question. Cardboard to separate the pieces. Can use bubble wrap as well but use painters tape or plastic wrap to seal. Pieces do get damaged, it’s just part of the cost of doing business. Brown butcher paper from Home Depot works well too for wrapping pieces. I ended up renting a U-Haul to easily get all my artwork and booth to the event in 1 load and it would minimize the amount of packing I would have to do. Movers blankets are cheap and really helpful. Stay tuned to my channel. I will probably do an advanced art market video and I’ll discuss this topic more thoroughly. Aloha 🤙🏼
Yes 💯. Keep images of every original you make whether going to print it or not. That being said if you can’t afford a good scan or it’s just not possible to scan every piece than just scan your best pieces.
@@WelzieArt thank you! Would a good art scan be done by a professional print maker, or could it be done at a public library maker place until you can afford to buy one?
What would you consider to be a lot of pieces for a first timer? I'm in the process of doing 10 pieces for my first art festival. Do I need more than that?
Great question!! 10 pieces for your first art festival should be fine. It’s enough to show people what your style is. If you sell 1 piece that’s a 1/10 success rate which is pretty high. The more pieces you have the Success rate can be easier like 1/20. But really focus on having great art. That’s what’s important. Also, it’s your first show. That’s amazing. No matter what you’re awesome for trying it. Do the show. Learn. Paint, practice learn and do another show. Stay at. Keep going. And someday you look back and think about how it all started at that first show. Good luck. Let me know how it goes. Stay inspired, aloha 🤙🏼
That’s great! Everyone starts there and works their way up. Get out there and do an art fair! You’ll have so much fun and learn heaps! Stay inspired 🤙🏼
How do you deal with people who begin taking pictures of your art at Art fairs? I have seen one vendor post a sign stating, to please not take pictures, but instead to ask for assistance. I am not sure what assistance the vendor would have offered someone taking pictures. So I am still not clear on how artists handle that situation at fairs. Please advise. Thanks.
Some artists really don’t want their work in anyone’s else’s hands. I’m in the camp of let them take pictures. Show their friends, post on social media, who cares. I think it’s a little snobby to be like “no photos of my art” but be sitting in a beach chair on dead grass in a field or sidewalk. We let people take pictures in my gallery. They often do to record what they like then they will buy at a later date. Either way works. I just doubt a person is going to take a photo to print it up for their house. Have you ever printed a photo you took from your phone? lol probably not often. Don’t stress on it. We’re just artists 🥳
@@WelzieArtThank you! You’re right there can be a growing number of things to stress over, or we can just relax and let art do what it is meant to do, which is to bring joy to someone’s space.
Thank you very much for all help. I will do my first art show. I am selling leather bracelets and coin jewelries online. Is it a good idea to advertise my online store and give them a business card? Am I going lost sale at art shows by doing this. Thank you very much.Mesut

You can also do an email raffle where they can put their email in a bowl and at the end of the event can pull a name. Lots of ways to get emails. Just don’t be afraid to ask. If they say no it’s not that big of deal and the email wouldn’t have been useful anyway
Those tips are amazing, thank you! ♥️
Thank you! Much appreciated 🤙🏼
@@WelzieArt Thanks so much! Time to get making in the meantime!
Shows help put the pressure on. Learn how to formulate your process. Make pieces efficiently without sacrificing quality. Good luck!
Great video! Thanks for all the info.

I totally blew it on collecting the names of people who bought my originals 😢
Don’t worry I didn’t collect names for a couple years. 🤙🏼

@@WelzieArt thank you! I look forward to the video on it too 💜

Have you ever been to art Basel in Miami?
I have not but it’s definitely on my bucket list. It’s a pretty busy time of year here on Maui at my gallery so it’s hard to leave. Have you?
Super helpful vid!

I don't think the 300 buck ATM limit is the case anymore. I have drawn out 600 at a time at BofA numerous times!
That’s great news. Raise your prices! Shows how old I am

Thank you!!
how do you pack up an art piece when it is purchased? do you use die cut plastic bags with handles?
Usually we don’t bag matted prints. Original artwork is usually placed in the bubble wrap that we brought it to the show in. If you must provide bags or packages keep super simple. Nothing custom. It’s expensive and time consuming. Keep it simple. Simple is more “eco friendly”
Do you have a video breaking down price points more and maybe on how to best be cohesive both in your aesthetic and pricing ? Thanks in advance !
Hi Amy! I don’t have a video yet but I do agree that would be helpful. I talk about it on a little bit on my podcast on TH-cam but I should make one solely discussing price points because they are so important to the growth of your art business. Hello!!! I am planning on hosting a art festival in the Caribbean (my home island) I plan on showing this video to the artist, but I would love some advice on hosting, is that possible?
That’s awesome! All the artists will be so grateful! Let me know any questions you have I’ll respond here 🤙🏼
Notations are easier and faster on a recording device. Also easier to transcribe if done with a program.
Thanks
I'm applying for my first street fair in a few weeks. When setting up does it ever happen where you can park your car in front of your booth then move your car when you're done? Or would I always have to carry everything over?
Great question. Often you get an hour window before the event to pull your car up to the booth to drop off. Then you can unload. Make sure this is possible by reading the rules and time for the the event. I have been to events where you can’t pull up to your booth. So make sure to read the rules to your event
Do you have biz cards at your table? Are you taking email addresses at your booth?
Yes and yes. We do a collector’s list where we ask people for emails. Also have business cards and postcards size marketing collateral for people to take home with our contact info
@@WelzieArt what do you think about recycled artwork made into business cards? I like this because it's creative, but it might also look hokey...😅
how do you pack your artwork to the events?
Aloha 🤙🏼
When using card reader do you add tax to the cost?
Yes. There is an option in card reader to automatically add it up
Novice question here: Are you keeping images of your originals to develop prints at a later time, whenever you decide to make prints?
I do all my own scans with digital camera. Your phone should be good enough for the average beginner.
