Making a Victorian Jet Necklace // DIY Beading Tutorial

  • Today I'll be talking you through how I made this sparkling black gothic necklace inspired by Victorian jet mourning jewelry! I had started looking for a necklace to wear with the costume I'm making and couldn't really find anything in my price range, so I decided to DIY some "jet" jewelry. I have been beading for even longer than I have been sewing, and really enjoy it as a "hobby" in my "off" time...whatever those things are. I hope you all enjoy this tutorial and let me know if you would like to see more jewelry making and crafting in the future!
    Materials List:
    -Size 15 black seed beads
-Flexible beading wire (preferably thin and very flexible indeed)
-Size 3mm opaque jet fire polished beads
-Size 5mm round black glass beads
-Size 6mm opaque jet fire polished beads
-Size 8mm opaque jet fire polished beads
-Size 5mm x 7mm black opaque faceted teardrops (center drilled)
-Size 8mm x 11mm black faceted teardrops (center drilled)
    -2mm black crimps
    -Black headpins
    -Black ear wires
    -Gunmetal or black clasp

First, a disclaimer: So many of you have kindly offered to send me things, including vintage items you may have inherited, and I am so honored you would think of me and of course I do adore vintage treasures, however, unfortunately I only have so much storage space currently! So there is a chance that if something just wont work for me, or doesn't fit me etc, that I may not be able to keep all of your lovely things. Please only send things if you are okay with the possibility that I may donate items I just cannot keep. Me: "I'm not much of a jewelry person."
Bianca the Closet Historian: *vampy glams it up serving the most spoopy look*
Me: "...so uh, I'm a jewelry person now."
Honestly most jewelry I see in stores is just not my style, I suppose making your own deals with that quite nicely! And this necklace especially is just beautiful. I'd certainly welcome seeing more of your beading work, maybe also with some guidance for any beginners who might want to get into it themselves?

I also was not a jewellry person, until I started following Dames a la Mode. She makes historical reproduction jewellery, and it is stunning! I want it all so very badly! Her TH-cam channel is mostly sewing historical clothing, but she has done a couple of videos on her jewellery, which is actually her day job.
And considering the expertise and research that goes into her jewellery, it is very reasonably priced. Highly recommend you have a squiz, if you’re interested- both her channel and her shop.

That crock story is hysterical! My first job was a costumer designer, but Michaels would have been great, too. If you worry about losing your hands, I'm 60 and reversed arthritis. It requires a fairly strict diet, but my mother was crippled at 55 and I wasn't going there. I can still draw and sew and bead all day with no pain. You don't need to fear losing dexterity, it really is a symptom of bad diet, not age.

I just watched this today and YES! more beading tutorials would be great! I don't own any Crocs and have never worn them. Good for you for sticking to your guns back then! I can completely understand an employer requiring a certain color and style of pants and shoes, but to get that specific is unreasonable. If they behave that way toward their employees, they don't have a store I care to frequent.

I remember reading a book about Victoria (doesn't seem like a person I'd like very much, extremely self indulgent, in my opinion anyway. Not really the era I usually read about.) and how she'd go into mourning so much and for so long and it really expanded the jet jewelry making business in the areas where it was found. It was as if she really took some strange enjoyment in mourning and somehow, it became more about her. Apparently ladies at court weren't so pleased to be forced into full or half mourning over and over again.

The pieces are very beautiful! It really looked like they would shift green, I've seen some very pretty beads that do that when the light hits just right. But just black is very stunning as well!
I wouldn't mind more beading, I find it very relaxing to watch (and do) and if one wants to follow along it is easier than with sewing, I find.

Lovely! My mom does wire wrapping on stones and stuff and as a teen/kid when I tried to pick it up I always got overwhelmed by all of the choices and possibilities. I think I made an anklet that I really liked and that was about it ha ha. Beads, clasps (lobster claws are my preference), earring wires, thread and a needle small enough to fit through them. This is lovely, Bianca. I would love to see more posts on Beadwork and embellishment of clothing on the podcast, especially if the beadwork is on clothing. I make some beaded jewellery, including a couple of pieces inspired by mourning jewellery and I have done for about 20 years, but I'm just starting to add them to my sewing projects. When you are working with pieces that have draped swags, or dangles, you are always going to have to deal with the effects of gravity in some way, unless you are using a wire wrapping to make the points, which would make it less comfortable to wear.
If you ever get the chance to go to Whitby, there is a wonderful jewellery workshop there that has a small museum with some of the original jewellery making tools from that era, it was fun to see what had changed since then and how many of the tools were still recognisable!

That's a really fun jewelry set! I worked in a bead shop part-time for a summer when I was in college, and I still have some beads and the bead tools I bought as a result. I should get them out and make something. Several years ago I was given an antique jet bead collar, which had been deaccessioned and was about to be thrown out (due to bad condition) by the museum where I used to work; one of the staff in the collections center (where I volunteered) pulled it off the trash pile and set it aside for me, to either restore or salvage the beads. Whatever kind of thread that the beads had been strung on, is shattering and falling apart, but most of it is still intact.

    • @TheClosetHistorian
      @TheClosetHistorian  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thank you! Thank goodness it was saved from the trash pile! Deteriorating thread is not reason enough to bin nice beads!

I hope you are able to repair it, it sounds like the original was strung on silk, which is strong, but breaks down eventually, many of the older necklaces pre-ww2 would have been strung on silk, more modern ones are often strung with nylon threads, unless they are pearls.

It turned out so beautifully! I love beaded stuff :)
Tbh, only about a year ago I thought that beaded jewelry looks childish and too simple for me to wear, but then my sister started to make beaded brooches and sell them on Instagram. I fell in love, because I saw that they are so intricate and gorgeous 😌
So, now I have five beaded brooches 😅
