- Today I'm going over how I make embroidered and beaded bug brooches! In this case moths, but I also want to make a few beetles. It's time to strain the eyes and shoulders and embroider away for hours on end!
Materials:
craft felt, needles (beading and sewing), thread, embroidery floss, beads, sequins, pin backs, buckram (optional)

Beautiful work! I would be sure to use the very best backing material that could be found because these will be heirloom pieces. They are works of art. I am going to learn more about this. I think I might could do it. Since I have gotten older many things I have done over the years are no longer open to me. I can still do hand work . With practice, I might be able to do embroidery and bead work. Thank you for showing this.

It’s beautiful bianca ! I can’t wait for you to do more Just a tip , when you bead on felt, you usually use stiffened felt, you can make your own though with adding a bit of water to modpodge and just painting it on your felt, it is much better to bead on then,and is a lot stronger, ❤️❤️❤️

First, I would watch a million of these, so please do make more! This comes at a great time since I have a huge project coming up that involves me creating a large moth piece, and while I had already decided against painting it, I was still waffling between whether to embroider or bead it, and now I see I could do both! It's likely going to be about 11" in length, and I'm so glad I saw this, because now I know I can work on it as a patch completely separate from the garment it's going to be attached to.

@@TheClosetHistorian It turned out wonderfully! She took much longer than I anticipated, but I always underestimate the time projects are going to take me, so that was almost a given. There are probably a few things I would do a bit differently (namely not making it so large!) but overall I'm happy with the results and will definitely be doing more in the future.
I'm very excited to see you continue all of your projects. Perhaps a happy jewel bug friend for every completed ensemble?

This is like a really sophisticated version of those bead pets I used to make all the time in elementary school. Now that I've said that I feel an intense need to make a beaded frog to put on my jean jacket.
So pretty. I love these, they’re gorgeous. I’d love to see more….that beetle looks fabulous. I’ve needle woven butterflys’ with seed beads before but the embroidery adds a lovely textural note that’s very effective. Also just a note, and you may already be aware of this Bianca, and may just prefer to do it the way you did, in which case, cool bananas, but you don’t have to remove the paper loops from embroidery threads. Keeping them on just makes it a little easier to store the threads. The trick is, you don’t pull from the longer free end that’s towards the outside of the skein cos that’ll tangle. You need to use the shorter end that’s on the inside of the skein, which will pull thru cleanly. Oh and just for informations sake, a male moth usually has feathered antennae because he uses them to sniff out the females who produce pheremones to attract males. The males feathered antennae act like little nets to capture the female pheromone molecules.

Very cool! I feel like you could do this very thing and make them into holiday ornaments. I have some vintage ornaments my grandmother made in the 1950s of things like little wreaths, other holiday themed items, out of felt, embroidered and sparkly with sequins and beads! Your project reminds me so much of those ornaments! :)

@@hanananah Cool! They really are the cutest ornaments, and I love that my grandmother made them by hand in the 40s & 50s. Some are felt shapes that she put a little stuffing in, then embellished with sequins & beads. Some are a ball shape, which I think are styrofoam spheres, and she made these cool patterns with ribbon & sequins by sticking pins into the balls. Just the coolest vintage ornament crafting. It's a testament to their longevity that in 2021, I'm still using them on my very own tree :)

The universe must be channeling embroidery bc I have started trying my hand at embroidery… I am making a cape out of an old wool blanket, so I thought putting an embroidery design as a way to cover the, ehem, moth holes, would be quite clever. It is, in fact, incredibly time consuming! Yours looks fantastic, and I wish I had some beads on hand.
It is clever, and it's also a "thing." Lots of thrifty folk like to patch rather than replace. It used to be looked down upon because it showed the world you were too poor and low class to afford nice things. Now most people don't give a flying hockey puck what others think, and love to use their creativity to enhance their world.
...that's genius... I need to learn more embrouder than just chain stitch...

@@bunhelsingslegacy3549 actually chain stitch is incredibly versatile. Just by varying the thickness of the thread and size of your stitch you can make anything from a heavy thick line to a fine whispy one. If you lay your heavy chain stitch close together it’s an effective fill stitch and it has the advantage of being great around curves, even tight ones. If you do a fairly large chain stitch in a fairly (not too fine or you won’t see it) fine metallic thread it looks like real chain laid onto your fabric, and because it handles curves with ease it’s a fantastic outline and/or lettering stitch. Chinese embroideries using just chain stitch and silk thread are amazing, and while I can’t aspire to those heights, I’ve embroidered many a motif using just chain stitch.
Oh my goodness, this is so inspiring. I've been swooning over those travel lore brooches since you featured them a while back but it will be a while before I can afford one of those lovelies. I did come across some embroidered felt bug ornaments at Target a week or so ago and grabbed a couple to make into brooches. I may have to pull those out and get them converted this weekend.

OMG, Those moths are gorgeous! With my aged, arthritic hands I can only watch someone do such detailed work. That beaded beetle as well as the moths will look wonderful on one of your Madragora bodices, or coat. BTW, your hair looks very nice the way you've fixed it.

I am not Goth. I do, however, sew. I was drawn to you because of the quality of instruction, explanation, and good old glam at the end of almost every video. I have come to love your style. I enjoy listening to you ramble about just about anything. ( loved your vacation vids!) I also learned to knit, crochet and embroider at my mother's knee. I remember getting a patch craft kit one year whose sole purpose was to teach and provide practice to master the blanket stich. I have fond memories. I absolutely love your embrodered, beaded brooches. The moths, both of them, are lovely. But what surprised me the most was the beetle. I wasn't expecting much. I mean, a beetle? It is exquisite!!! Beyond beautiful. I would proudly wear that to church with all my old lady friends chuckling and saying that's Maggie. Senorita Bianca, you are a gem. Would love to see an Egyptian scarab broach! That would be very The Mummy like. As much as I frown upon the cultural theft from the actual digs that happened in the 1920s, one must admit that the Archeologist look has been a major historical fashion icon.
I think this video is also a great example of why handmade items like these are so "expensive". I don't think the average person realizes the immense amount of time and effort that goes into these gorgeous tiny pieces.

ummmm... yes. I need to make one of these! Loved they way they turned out! Thank you for breaking down projects like this, and the hats too! These are things I've always dreamt of making (I always pictured myself as Sophie in Howells Moving Castle, dying to work in that hat shoppe haha), but never knew how or where to begin! Feeling more motivated to finish up my quilting so I can try a brooch! ALSO found a great 80's cicada brooch with green/blue enameled wings and a sparkly little body (so pretty)! I have yet to take it out on the town!

I can't accurately express to you how much I love your bug themed projects. If I weren't already in the middle of one embroidery project (a welcome to night vale/the magnus archives throw pillow) and starting another (a Gryffindor flag for my secret santa) I would totally be doing a Silence of the Lambs death's head hawkmoth as a brooch. By the way, you've turned me onto brooches. I now have a tiny spider and 2 black cameos.

I am amazed! I tried to avoid watching this video, as I have had an irrational fear of moths since childhood. Early this morning, the house was quiet so I decided to take a peek at it. Seeing the images while listening to your calm voice and informative narrative allowed me to appreciate the beauty of moths which has resulted in a lessening of my fear of them. I was able to watch the entire video! Your moth pins (as well as the beetle pin) are exquisite. I especially like how you mixed beads, sequins and embroidery. Have you considered adding moths to hair accessories (e.g. making decorative moth hair combs, hair clips or a tiara)?
You have inspired me to make a hummingbird pin using the techniques you employed making the moth and beetle pins. I already have beads, sequins, embroidery thread, felt and the necessary notions sitting in my sewing/craft room. I anticipate starting my hummingbird pin after the holidays. I have collected a small assortment of hummingbird pins, most of which are affixed to my hats. We are lucky to have hummingbirds year-round and I so enjoy watching them zoom around the feeders on our balcony.

Those are very cute! I've recently also gotten into bead embroidering brooches and it's been a fascinating thing to learn.
I recently made a scarab beetle through stumpwork embroidery and it's a delightful brooch now. The stumpwork technique allows you to make things much more 3D and pose-able!

I love your insect and spider brooches. When I was a kid, in the sixties, I remember brooches made of live beetles with a chain to the clasp. They had gems stuck to their carapace and it has always horrified me. Yours on the other hand, are stunningly beautiful (the live beetles were beautiful too but better free with ordinary beetles. I was a sensitive kid and would have freed any brooches I came across despite what the owner said!)

ive been doing an 8x10 needlepainting embroidery for my ap art class and it has been taking absolutely forver i havespent more than 48 hours on it at least and i am not done its satisfying but also gruling in the best way. and now i want to buy a million sequins cause that sounds very fun

Love love LOVE!! I have a chiffon "burnout " with giant moths that I used for the lining of my American Duchess 1910 cape. I've been wanting to showcase the fabric in something else and just found out that a family wedding this summer is black tie, so I wanted to make lace or beaded moths to complement the fabric. Now I think I know what I must do!

Was so proud to have reduced my unfinished WIP pieces ... now I´m distracted again ... it ist soooo pretty ... I startet pieces of mossy textured embroidery to sew on my witch hat and something like that would look nice as contrast (even when moth here are looking a bit more boring, maybe a bumblebee or more daily butterfly in this technique would be nice😄).
Funnily enough, I’m currently doing a thread painting embroidery thing- making a recreation of a painting from my parents’ favourite artist, Pro Hart. It’s not a copy, it’s a cover- I’m a different singer in a different genre, as my brother says. But yes, it is pretty intense.
Enjoyable though. I’ll definitely be doing it again, though maybe I’ll do something of my own design next time. I do recommend it, it’s a great way to keep your hands busy. But it is only 7x5 ish inches and it’ll have taken me at least 3&1/2 weeks by the time it’s done.

I do silk shading and needle painting and yes it's INTENSE. I was asked to send photos of my work and I really struggled because everything takes so long.
I love it and after seeing your video, I got encouraged to try make something for myself. Even though I have basic 0 experience in either embroidery but I want to do a beautiful autume leaf headpiece for myself. ^^

This came at a perfect time! That turkey stitch you did will be perfect for a project I have planned. A "rug" for one of the treadle sewing machine I've collected during covid. A sort of copy of the decals on the machine. A singer red eye named Winifred. I saw a lady who's treadle came with a rug on the pedal, and said hmm 🤔
Moths are my very favorite insect! I think you'd like the Spanish Moon Moth, because of their shade of green and elegant, almost art nouveau lines.
Have you seen the moth (insect) jewelry of John Paul Miller, a goldsmith? He even had wild squid one that is lovely.
In the past I have used a beading needle to quilt. It much easier to keep your stitches even. Neat and tidy. And I have lost track of how many of those I have snapped in half.
Embroidery is so beautiful! I had never even thought of making a pin.
