I just took my ZR2 on a 3500 mile road trip including a few days in Moab. I took my truck down a trail that ended up being more challenging than anticipated but the truck handled it amazing! I was following a group of jeeps and they were shocked at how easy the truck made some of the obstacles look. The turbo motor and low range made low speed crawling super smooth and controllable. I did make use of my skid plates and rock rails a few times but the flex and traction from the Goodyears was so good that I only engaged my lockers once or twice. The trail boss would probably have done just as well. I averaged nearly 20mpg over the entire trip, including a good amount of off-road and 80mph interstate driving. I’m very happy with my truck!
I was looking at the TrailBoss and my boss said he wanted the upgrades that the GMC offered, so we ended up with two Canyon AT4s. Lol. Couldn’t be happier. $41.5k each through our fleet account. The truck looks and feels way more premium than what you’d expect for the price.
Thx for clarifying the G80 not being a true “locker”. It’s a great street safe alternative to a true locker that works well behind the scene. But my vans are equipped with them 👍🏻 Next, I’d have a ZR2 or maybe even a Trail Boss Colorado if they offered a 6’ bed. Call me old fashioned, but I want a full size bed! 🤷🏻♂️ That is one of the new Tacomas option, a 6’ bed. But with Toyotas pricing, labor issues and build quality, not a chance for me! And South East Toyota can cram it with their garbage mandated add on crap options!
The G80 is a real locker. It will mechanically lock both axle shafts together, it just isn’t selectable. Works similarly to a Detroit, but takes more wheel spin to engage and has much better street manners.
@Holden-McGroin correct. And it's amazing and it's included already and it's always ready. But it does not let you lock up and creep along with them locked like an e locker. Requires 100 rpm of wheel spin to engage. But still it's a great option. But not as good as a true e locker.
I ordered a Burnt Bronze one last week with all the Conv/Tech options, upgrd MT tires, skid plate upgrade , spray-in bedliner, off-road lights, bed lights, hood and tailgate stickers, blk lettering, and trailer pkg with a $45k MSRP but only $41700 out the door. I think your exactly right, it's the most bang for your buck in the midsize market.
I bought a new 2023 Chevy Camaro zl1 and the motor blew (spun rod bearing) at 4,000 miles. Gm consumer care took care of me put a new long block in and gave me $1500 for it being down for a month and a half and gave me an extended warranty on the engine too. So with manufacturers being the same in reliably today. GM really did take care of me when things went wrong.
Man the Colorado and Canyon, they look so good. If I had unlimited funds I’d get the AT4X either canyon or the sierra. Live the design and off road capability
I was going to get the Toyota but with all their issues, and the quality issues with virtually every other manufacturer I'm interested in, I've decided to wait. The Colorado Trail Boss is certainly a GREAT looking truck, there's no doubt there!

I was a long time GM guy but had gone towards Volvo and Toyota for my vehicles over the last 15 years. I was considering the new Frontier Pro-4X but I have liked the idea of a turbo engine since I offroad at high altitude. I've seen several videos on the effort GM put into the 2.7T and was quite impressed by it. I'm looking at getting a truck in the next 6 months and I will definitely have a look at the Trail Boss.
Update: Just looked at a couple of quick comparisons and the monroneys and it looks like a lot of the options I want that are commonly available on just about any Frontier at 40K are extra packages or not even available on the Trail Boss. I'd have to go up to the ZR2 to get what I want which I will look at but would need about 7k in discounts and incentives to get to the deal I'm working on a Pro-4X. The differtence does shrink to about 4.5K once I add the ZR1 exhaust and tune to get more WHP and the 2 inch lift kit. I don't need a front locker, I used to offroad without any lockers back in the day and I got by just fine with good driving and tire choice.
For the first time in 15 years I am not driving a Tacoma. The Colorado TrailBoss was too compelling. They were able to find me the exact color and options that I wanted and do a dealer trade in 2 days. No waiting on a build. I’m a terrible negotiator and still got a few hundred off MSRP. I’ve barely owned it a month and this is as happy as I have ever been with a truck. It does all the truck stuff I could want and as someone that drives around in a lot of muddy pastures, the G80 is way less frustrating than a manual locker.

Actually as of right now the smartest buy is Nissan Frontier. Why? They have had a history of reliability, they are still offering a naturally aspirated V6 engine, they have discounts on a regular basis and have been the lowest price compared to other brands. It is clear the Nissan Frontier is the smartest truck to buy as of 2024.
The frontier is a great truck
How dare you recommend a American truck. Or is it made in china?
😂😂
4 banger turbo? Nope
Only torn because the price of the Colorado is just so tempting! But out of all the vehicles today, Toyota has to be the best. Don’t get wrong, they’re all crappy nowadays, but Toyota must be the best.
My 2 cents, and opinion if I was buying new today. Do your research. Don't just assume anything is like it used to be.
Overpriced and arrogant, will not discount, I have an 06 Corolla and Ford Mustang so not biased.
