His parents came into the film unnamed and I am able to link Maui to another civilization, but its difficult to find a couple in Atlantis to Maui. The only people we know from Atlantis are Kida, Kida's father King Kashekim Nedakh and her mother which is why I didn't find names for who his parents were. In mythology his parents were named Māui is the son of Taranga, the wife of Makeatutara, so I should have concluded these were his parents names in Atlantis. Sorry for the lack of clarity. As I understand that this is more of a Disney theory about who Maui's Disney parents are, then this is pretty cool. But hearing that Disney changed Maui's background story saying that he wasn't loved by his parents and just threw him in the sea is kinda sad. In Maori mythology, Maui was born to Taranga who, after giving birth to Maui, Saw that the child did not cry or breath. Crying and Weeping, Taranga cut her long beautiful hair and wrapped Maui in it, (This gave him the name Maui-Tikitiki-a-Taranga) thinking him to be dead, and drifted him away in the sea. Tangaroa (god of the oceans and seas) took pity on Taranga, and so he took the child, and sent him to another person to raise him called Tama-nui-ki-te-Rangi. He raise Maui to his adolescence years, once Maui because of manhood age, he set of to find his mother Taranga. .....There's more to the story, but it goes on and on. This is just another version of his birth, that i found could have been more suitable and cooler for the movie.
A theory: Rapunzel’s hair doesn’t have healing powers, it has the power to reverse time in things, in the song you sing ,you can hear a lyric, “make the clock reverse” is a pretty big clue. Besides why would Gothel become young because she got healed? If she had reversed time she would start being young again. And that makes more sense, when she takes away a bruise it’s because, a few hours ago you didn’t have that bruise, so fun fact?

What if Maui's parents threw him into the ocean because Atlantis was sinking and they didn't want him to get crushed. What if Kida's mom, from atlantis, actually saved Maui and gave him powers because she couldn't save all of Atlantis

That could mean that he was just a baby at the time and therefore, came up with a reason why he was abandoned in the first place without actually knowing the real reason why he was abandoned.

(Fun fact) Maui is a Maori Legend from New Zealand/Long white cloud he was said to have pulled New Zealand up from the sea with a “special hook” he also used the “special hook” to capture the sun to make the days longer. Here's a theory....What if Maui's mother WAS a goddess....but a FALLEN goddess? I heard a theory that Megara from Hercules is speculated to be Mother Gothel from Tangled. She was married to Hercules (which would kind of make her related to a god by marriage) and there are many symbols of the sun in Hercules as well. So hear me out....what if, Hercules and Megara had a child (who could be considered a demi-god since Meg is human) and that child was Maui. I think one of two things happened.....When the gods granted Maui his powers and he created the flower by harnessing the sun, either dear Mother Gothel went mad with her desire for power and eternal life and she took control of that power, casting her young son into the sea to keep the flower's magic for herself after she learned the secret song....OR...she got pregnant by Hercules, fled back to Earth because she didn't want the baby for some reason and cast him into the sea, and the gods saw Maui alone in the sea and gave him protection and power because his father was a god and then Mother Gothel, recognizing that power in the magic golden flower, then exploited it to grant herself immortality through Rapunzel? It's just a thought.
very true. Also, Meg HAS had trust issues with men in her past....she literally made a deal with the devil and brought her first love back from the dead and he left her for another woman. Maybe history repeated itself and she abandoned the child to cut off all ties with the gods and Hercules found him and thus we have Maui. We know from Seamus's past videos that Maui is the one who presumably created the magical golden flower that Mother Gothel covets so deeply.....perhaps if Meg DID spend time with the gods, she knew of the flower's potential magic and that's why when she found the flower on Earth, she knew how to sing the special song that would make the flower's magic work.
Hey guys! I'm Polynesian! Amazing, I know 😛 Does anyone want to know a bit of folklore? Great, you're in luck 😉👌 I studied it in New Zealand, where I grew up and Hawaii, where I studied at uni. Maui pops up in a lot of Polynesian folklore Hawaiian, Tahitian, but most of all Maori folklore. Stories vary but, as the legends go, Maui was born premature. Seeing that Maui was dead, his mother cried, cut her hair off, wrapped him in her hair and threw his body into the ocean. The spirits of the ocean found Maui and took him to one of the gods. Some stories say the Sun god, Tama, but that doesn't make sense to me because Maui with his brothers in a later story tame the Sun with Maui's hook. Some say the it was the Sky god, Rangi. Not sure of that, all Rangi seems to do in legends is cry because he's separated from his wife, Papa, Mother Earth. Makes more sense that the god who raised Maui is the Wind god, the Sea god or many gods. Moving on, Maui is given life, raised by one or many gods, and learns to shape-shift. So, where's Maui's father in all of this? Getting there. Maui is reunited with his mother later in life, but he's tricky so he doesn't tell them right away. Don't remember the story lol look it up! But Maui stays with his mother and brothers after being reunited. Every night, he notices that their mother sneaks away. One night, he follows her out of the house, down a hole and into the underworld. Turns out his father is one of the guardians of the underworld! And people aren't really supposed to go there. The stories of Maui are way cool haha or I'm just a geek, either way 😎🤓 Maui meets his grandmother in the underworld and she gives him her jawbone because it has magical powers, which becomes his magical hook! Maui and his brothers go fishing and Maui fishes up New Zealand! Maui and his brothers go to the end of the world and use a net and Maui's hook to slow the Sun! Kids books, comics, boring old paper backs, there are so many stories and versions 👍👍👌 it's choice azzz hahaha

So. Many. Theories. There's one theory about Hercules growing the golden flower when he was falling to earth drinking the mortal potion. Now there's this one saying Maui grew it. Theories on Meg being mother gothell after hercules died before she did so she became evil again but then there is a theory that the queen from snow white is mother gothell because they both have same goals and actions meaning they are all the same. On a completely different note I'm surprised that they roped Atlantis into this since it's a very underrated movie despite it being one of my favourites. On another unrelated note, I just thought of something. Don't those trolls in frozen have crystal necklaces? Do they relate with the whole Atlantis/Tangled crystal/sun-flower thing since anyone who theorises has heard that Repunzel and Elsa are probably sisters therefore connecting the two places meaning they could have harvested the crystals aswell and the crystals just like "I'm gonna make these rocks trolls" and then that's how they can help Anna when hit by Elsa because it's the same power. He was the chief, and they had only just arrived at that island. He would obviously be the first chief of that island, and considering how many rocks were placed on the mountain then there's no way he could be the grandfather to Moana. We don't even know if the island he was on was Motunui, as we see his son leave to start a new voyage to a different island.

Idk about who his parents are but I think they may be from moanas tribe/group. The necklace he has on his neck is like the first 'We know the way' in the movie Moana. Though the necklace is ONLY given to a cheif, which in the end, was given to the man on the boat at the end of the song. So, is it possible he came from the group that left, or is his dad the guy that ended up leaving? That would be an explanation for how he got the necklace.
2 points I need to make here: 1) The necklace was not given to chiefs, it was given to master wayfinders, who would travel to new islands and become chiefs of those islands. Once a master wayfinder became a chief, he would hand the necklace down to the next master wayfinder. 2) If you look closely, the necklace that the master wayfinder was wearing was the same necklace that Moana's grandmother gave to her. Through the years, all of the "teeth" (that's what they look like anyway) have disappeared from the necklace, but the same blue and white crest is at the bottom of the necklace

So, we know that 'atlantis the lost empire' is connected to 'moana' and that 'moana' and 'atlantis the lost empire' is connected to 'tangled' and because Rapunzel shows up in 'Frozen 1' we know those two movies are connected, then in 'Big Hero 6' there's a statue of Prince Hans and a landscape painting of Arendelle, we know that 'Frozen' is connected to big hero 6. So, that confirms that 'Atlantis the lost empire', 'Moana', 'Tangled', and 'Big Hero 6', all take place in the same universe.
Honestly, Maori myths and legends are so underrated. I live in South Auckland in New Zealand, and grew up hearing all of these tales, including Mauis misadventures. The gods remind me a lot of Greek mythology, and bear some resembalance to what the gods are in charge of. If you're willing, I would suggest researching these myths because they are incredibly interesting. Not to mention that maori culture is dying out drastically, so having many people know these myths and legends would be incredible!

I always have fun listening to your theories but on this one I think I respectfully disagree on about him being Atlantian, mainly because of one major-or maybe a few minor-differences. Unlike all the other Atlantian's his hair is dark brown while theirs is pure white, plus their skin tone is noticeably lighter. The first half of what you said, was mentioned in the video.. Also, it mentions in the movie (and in mythology) that he used pre-existing things - created by Tafiti - to create new things e.g. he buried an eel created by Tafiti and then a coconut tree sprouted. It's similar to how the lightbulb wouldn't be invented, without first the invention of electricity.. So he didn't create life; he manipulated it. Some creations came from pure science and some were influenced and nurtured by Tafiti.
I hate to tell you this, but Wikipedia is frequently wrong. It isn't a very credible source. His mother's name may have been Taranga, but it would probably be better to try and find that information with a different source. At school, they wouldn't let anyone use Wikipedia as a source because it could be edited by anyone.

Here's a theory....What if Maui's mother WAS a goddess....but a FALLEN goddess? I heard a theory that Megara from Hercules is speculated to be Mother Gothel from Tangled. She was married to Hercules (which would kind of make her related to a god by marriage) and there are many symbols of the sun in Hercules as well. So hear me out....what if, Hercules and Megara had a child (who could be considered a demi-god since Meg is human) and that child was Maui. I think one of two things happened.....When the gods granted Maui his powers and he created the flower by harnessing the sun, either dear Mother Gothel went mad with her desire for power and eternal life and she took control of that power, casting her young son into the sea to keep the flower's magic for herself after she learned the secret song....OR...she got pregnant by Hercules, fled back to Earth because she didn't want the baby for some reason and cast him into the sea, and the gods saw Maui alone in the sea and gave him protection and power because his father was a god and then Mother Gothel, recognizing that power in the magic golden flower, then exploited it to grant herself immortality through Rapunzel? Great, you're in luck 😉👌 I studied it in New Zealand, where I grew up and Hawaii, where I studied at uni.
Maui pops up in a lot of Polynesian folklore Hawaiian, Tahitian, but most of all Maori folklore.
Stories vary but, as the legends go, Maui was born premature. Seeing that Maui was dead, his mother cried, cut her hair off, wrapped him in her hair and threw his body into the ocean. The spirits of the ocean found Maui and took him to one of the gods.
Some stories say the Sun god, Tama, but that doesn't make sense to me because Maui with his brothers in a later story tame the Sun with Maui's hook.
Some say the it was the Sky god, Rangi. Not sure of that, all Rangi seems to do in legends is cry because he's separated from his wife, Papa, Mother Earth.
Makes more sense that the god who raised Maui is the Wind god, the Sea god or many gods.
Moving on, Maui is given life, raised by one or many gods, and learns to shape-shift.
So, where's Maui's father in all of this? Getting there.
Maui is reunited with his mother later in life, but he's tricky so he doesn't tell them right away. Don't remember the story lol look it up!
But Maui stays with his mother and brothers after being reunited.
Every night, he notices that their mother sneaks away. One night, he follows her out of the house, down a hole and into the underworld.
Turns out his father is one of the guardians of the underworld! And people aren't really supposed to go there.

Maui meets his grandmother in the underworld and she gives him her jawbone because it has magical powers, which becomes his magical hook!

So. Many. Theories. There's one theory about Hercules growing the golden flower when he was falling to earth drinking the mortal potion. Now there's this one saying Maui grew it. Theories on Meg being mother gothell after hercules died before she did so she became evil again but then there is a theory that the queen from snow white is mother gothell because they both have same goals and actions meaning they are all the same.
On a completely different note I'm surprised that they roped Atlantis into this since it's a very underrated movie despite it being one of my favourites.
On another unrelated note, I just thought of something. Don't those trolls in frozen have crystal necklaces? Do they relate with the whole Atlantis/Tangled crystal/sun-flower thing since anyone who theorises has heard that Repunzel and Elsa are probably sisters therefore connecting the two places meaning they could have harvested the crystals aswell and the crystals just like "I'm gonna make these rocks trolls" and then that's how they can help Anna when hit by Elsa because it's the same power.

Idk about who his parents are but I think they may be from moanas tribe/group. The necklace he has on his neck is like the first 'We know the way' in the movie Moana. Though the necklace is ONLY given to a cheif, which in the end, was given to the man on the boat at the end of the song. So, is it possible he came from the group that left, or is his dad the guy that ended up leaving? That would be an explanation for how he got the necklace.

2 points I need to make here:
1) The necklace was not given to chiefs, it was given to master wayfinders, who would travel to new islands and become chiefs of those islands. Once a master wayfinder became a chief, he would hand the necklace down to the next master wayfinder.
2) If you look closely, the necklace that the master wayfinder was wearing was the same necklace that Moana's grandmother gave to her. Through the years, all of the "teeth" (that's what they look like anyway) have disappeared from the necklace, but the same blue and white crest is at the bottom of the necklace

Honestly, Maori myths and legends are so underrated. I live in South Auckland in New Zealand, and grew up hearing all of these tales, including Mauis misadventures. The gods remind me a lot of Greek mythology, and bear some resembalance to what the gods are in charge of. If you're willing, I would suggest researching these myths because they are incredibly interesting. Not to mention that maori culture is dying out drastically, so having many people know these myths and legends would be incredible!

I always have fun listening to your theories but on this one I think I respectfully disagree on about him being Atlantian, mainly because of one major-or maybe a few minor-differences. Unlike all the other Atlantian's his hair is dark brown while theirs is pure white, plus their skin tone is noticeably lighter. We may never know who his parents were but regardless as always it's fun to watch you theorize! Still hoping for a Black Cauldron theory someday! ;)

He was was born premature and wrapped in the topknot and placed into the sea where ocean spirits took pity on him and wrapped his bundle in seaweed to protect it till it was found by his Divine Tupuna( ancestor) Tama-nui-te-Rangi who breathed life back into the remaining spark that was Maui....

Te Fiti is a goddess. Maui's parents were humans. As such Te Fiti can't be his mother.

Plot Twist: Maui is actually the son of Poseidon/Neptune. He was cast out by his parents because he didn't look like a Greek. His mother was the wife of the chief of Motu Nui. But they made Maui with Poseidon disguised as her husband. Hephaestus built his magical fishhook. Boom.

Maui is from Maori mythology, his parents are Taranga and Makeatutara. The myth says that his mother believed Maui was still-born, so she wrapped him in hair and cast him upon the ocean. Lots of people have different story's about Maui though.

The first half of what you said, was mentioned in the video.. Also, it mentions in the movie (and in mythology) that he used pre-existing things - created by Tafiti - to create new things e.g. he buried an eel created by Tafiti and then a coconut tree sprouted. It's similar to how the lightbulb wouldn't be invented, without first the invention of electricity.. So he didn't create life; he manipulated it. Some creations came from pure science and some were influenced and nurtured by Tafiti.

I hate to tell you this, but Wikipedia is frequently wrong. It isn't a very credible source. His mother's name may have been Taranga, but it would probably be better to try and find that information with a different source. At school, they wouldn't let anyone use Wikipedia as a source because it could be edited by anyone.

The writer of this comment is actually correct. Maui was a premature baby, and was thought to be stillborn. Taranga wrapped Maui in her hair knot, and threw him into the ocean because she was sad; she thought her fifth son was dead.
