    I think Disney needs to start a “dark Disney” series. Where they animate the darker stories they pull most of their popular works from. It would be like cartoon horror movies.

      They’ve done scary movies before. The Black Cauldron comes to mind. But I don’t know why they stopped. I guess their kid friendly films were more commercially successful.

      Theyll never go for it. Their fully committed to the family friendly content.
      Only time that might happen is if they decide to release it through some other company that they own like hulu now.
      But even then some people might think that because its "disney" that its okay for their kids.
      So theyll never do it.

    There was a time in history when our culture and traditions were once banned from us and a lot of our ancestral knowledge was lost (some lost forever). To now see the ʻike that survived being shared and appreciated by so many others (who may or may not have any connections to Hawaii) is honestly such a win for us Kanaka. Even though our oppressors tried to eradicate us and wipe away our existence, we are still here thriving not only within our own communities, but now all over the world with the kōkua of so many awesome people. I recently discovered this page and love putting this on in the background while I do other things, but when I started to hear familiar names such as Pele(honuamea), Moananuikalehua, Hiʻiaka(ikapoliopele), Nāmaka(ʻokahaʻi), etc… it caught my attention real quick and I had to watch. Something that I notice about all of your videos and really appreciate, & especially in these ones covering our moʻolelo, is the amount of effort, research, and articulation you put into them. To me it shows what we call “aloha” which can mean many things such as respect, unassuming, appreciative, considerate, etc... (& just FYI if interested, aloha is more of a lifestyle than it is a greeting). And although not perfect, I appreciate you trying to pronounce the names of our akua and places, while at the same time not making a mockery of our language. The only nitpicky thing I would like to touch on is that many of the stories you shared were from Hawaii. We are a part of Polynesia, but we do not make up all of Polynesia nor do our cultural traditions/practices and shouldn’t be referred to as “Polynesian”. There are many similarities between our cultures such as our mythologies, languages, and even our struggles, but to group all Polynesians under one umbrella to me takes away from the beauty and uniqueness of our intricate cultures. I think it would be incredible for future videos surrounding Polynesian cultures if there were clearer distinctions of which place you got the stories from, so that these places can enjoy the respect and appreciation they also deserve. Other than that really small detail, I’m so impressed by these videos, mahalo nui loa!
    P.S. - Sounds for the vowels applies to the entire Hawaiian language & never changes. If you can remember the pronunciation of the vowels, the rest becomes a little easier😊. I encourage anyone who would like to learn ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi to give it a fair chance if you have the time. E ola Ka ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi!

      It’s crazy to me how they’re all under the Polynesian umbrella, yet in completely different places. I was born in nz and I remember when Hawaii was brought up for the first time I was like uhhh why are they saying all these things when it’s the Maori’s (something along those lines) and then I was informed about how all of these different places all come under the Polynesian umbrella

      Oshun (spelled various ways, but yes Oshun is a correct spelling they weren't wrong) is an Orisha, one of the African river goddesses, currently being given a large role in the show American Gods (which of course is not their origin just one of the most recent references drawing light to more cultures' beliefs and drawing our attention to them assuming we hadn't learned of them previously). I'd also love to see the actual origin story/stories!

    Example 1: "Papa took it upon herself to name the baby Haloa, which means “eternal breath”, and then buried it facing the rising sun in the east, then from the spot he was buried sprouted the taro plant, which was very important to Hawaiian diets back in the day."
    Example 2: "Moana’s spirit was then transformed and from the spot she was buried sprouted the Oli’a Lehua, which is one of Hawaii’s most sacred trees."
    The two above myths are similar to other rebirth and vegetation myths from around the world. I study comparative mythology, so this kind of interests me. I'll give a few examples. In Irish mythology, Miach was killed and his dead body was reborn as 365 herbs. In another Irish myth, the lovers Naoise and Deirdre died and were reborn as pine trees. In Algonquin Native American mythology, the god Chakekenapok was killed and then reborn as grapevines. In Penobscot Native American mythology, the character Corn Goddess was killed and then she was reborn as corn. The Phrygian god Attis hung/died on a pine tree. In the Shinto religion of Japan, the goddess Ogetsu-no-hime died and from her dead body came rice, wheat, soy beans, red beans, and millet. In Babylonian mythology, after the goddess Tiamat is killed by the supreme god Marduk, her body becomes the earth (as well as the sky). In Norse mythology, after Ymir is killed by Odin and his brothers, his body becomes the animistic source of the earth. In the Christian religion, Jesus dies on a cross, which is a symbolic tree.

    I think that the Moana of the movie was the reincarnated sea goddess. After being dead about a thousand years, she had found it in her heart to forgive Maui and wanted to restore Tefiti's heart. When she made her request via the goddess of the underworld, the other goddesses and gods thought Who better to look Taka in the face and say "don't let yourself be defined by the wrongs done to you" than someone who has risen above the wrongs done to her? Of course, Moana would have to do it as a human, she would not have the memories of her previous life and there would be limits to how much help the gods could give her, but she was OK with that and they had already found the perfect teacher in Tala. Tala had earned her ability to commune with the sea, either she learned it or the sea goddess Namaka had given her the ability, she had chosen the boat Moana would use because it was small enough for one person to handle and was strong enough to take the beating it would be subjected to. When Tala died, the gods repaid her for getting Moana ready be making her into a young, powerful manta ray and telling all of the sea creature to treat her with great respect.

    you are honestly doing a great job with the pronunciations, you can can tell the time and effort you put in! funny enough, Polynesian (at least in Hawaiian) pronunciation is a lot easier and consistent, compared to Greek for instance, what makes it difficult to is how long the names can be.
    all the vowels make the same sound consistently:
    a = ah
    i = ee
    e = eh
    o = oh
    u = oo

    I have always been drawn to the European Gods/Mythology.
    However I have always felt at peace whenever I am in or near the ocean, so because of that Moana is my second favorite Disney movie, just under Tarzan. Your videos have me pushing the Greek Gods aside and find the Polynesian Gods/Mythology more intriguing.
    One thing I question I have, about Moana... I know Disney had a huge group of Polynesian advisors, so I wonder why Disney created fictional Polynesian Gods, instead of using the real mythology.
    I truly commend you for your hard work and I literally applaud you for these videos.

    I could be misremembering it, but in one version of the *Japanese* creation story I remember reading, after she and Izanagi hooked up, Izanami ended up giving birth to the Japanese islands; the story of Papa giving birth to the *Hawaiian* islands sounds pretty similar to that, as does the Polynesian belief of everything possessing mana to the Japanese belief of everything possessing a *Kami* . There's actually a *few* similarities between Japanese and Polynesian mythology, which honestly isn't surprising, considering that the Polynesians were such incredible sailors as to sail as far as the *Americas* ; and considering that Japan's much *closer* to most Polynesian islands than the Americas, I honestly think it entirely *possible* that Polynesians visited Japan, and vice-versa. I even remember reading someone's comment on a *different* video on Polynesian cultures that the King of Hawaii actually *met* with the emperor of Japan to try to convince Japan to help *protect* Hawaii's status as an independent country before the Bayonet Constitution wound up being signed, and Hawaii ended up becoming a mere *American state* . Want proof that America *is* an empire, look no further than Hawaii.
    PS: Despite developing on the complete *opposite* side of the Eurasian landmass, in a mostly different *climate* , Japanese culture and mythology *also* has a lot of similarities to *Norse* culture and Mythology, which *definitely* explains why Japanese media *loves* referencing Norse mythology even in pieces that're in *no other* way connected to it; Bayonetta for instance, has challenge portals called Alfheim portals, the main antagonist of the *first* game is a figure named Father Baldur, etc, even though the first and second games have Judeo-Christian-Islamic influence in their themes, and otherwise have *no* connection to Norse mythology.
