Fun facts of the Hawaiian culture versions: Hina was his mother. Specifically Hinaiakamalama. She is the goddess of the moon and making kapa which is clothing made from the wauke bark. To make kapa, you need to soak the bark in water, pound it out with special wooden tools, and repeat this process until it is done and soft and then it needs to be dried. The days were too short for the kapa to dry out properly, so Maui caught the sun and slowed it down for his mother. This is a shortened explanation of how we explain Summer. Maui’s hook in Hawaiian culture is named Manaiakalani or Kamakau-nui-o-Maui. He used his hook to capture the islands with his brother. When he was on the canoe, he told his brothers that if he catches something, to keep paddling forward and to not look back for whatever reason. When his hook grabbed something, he told his brothers the same thing, but one of his brothers defied him and looked back to see a huge island on his line. Because he looked back, Maui’s line broke and his hook went flying to the sky which you can see today if you look up at the Scorpio star line. That is one of the stories of how our islands were created. Both of these versions I told are also shortened down a lot, mahalo 🙏🏽.

I love this series and have been going through all of them for the last week (I’m a fairly new subscriber)! I like the humor, stories and quality of the videos a lot! I have done quite a bit of my own research and study since I was a kid, but one of the main things that I admire about the videos is that Jon always post’s reputable sources! That is pretty rare with these types of videos, so thanks Jon! Great great job!!
Every time I hear him pronounce "Maori" like that... it's like being in Rotorua in peak tourist season. ~just te reo things~ just an fyi for any one else it's phonetically-ish Mau-ree (as in the Greek tau or bow of a boat without the "w", r is like a rolled r, like a soft d almost like the r in crunch) ~churr from NZ, we knew the story passed down by our kaumatua or/also those kid's books we all remember from school. it's fun hearing it through this lens.

I mean sorta, the macron over the ā makes an extended vow sound, so MAAo-Re would be closer. Also his o's aren't quite right either. But he does do a better job than most Pakeha, even most that actually live on te whenua
wanna add for anyone else the a in Te Reō is a 'ah' sound not a typical 'a'

Being born and raised in NZ, I always loved the Maui stories (we got the primary school versions) my favorites were always him fishing up the North Island and slowing down the sun.
Same!
Jon Solo: I'm sorry for butchering everything in this video. Me: it still hurts..
I love the idea of more Polynesian myths. Also, I'd love Japanese or Indian (South Asian) content.

Wish they would make more movies and shows regarding the myths, legends, and folklore of the Māori culture. It's always intrigued me growing up in NZ. The one that used to scare me though was Hātu Pātu and the Birdwoman. And when u go to Waihi they have a statue of her sitting on the bench. Used to freak me out lol
Hatu patu is one of my tribes famous stories
@@carmellitale-man2671 It's a real fascinating story and it use to scare me as a kid because they use to tell me if i ever wandered off too far the birdwoman will take me. And me, being a kid i believed it lol. They use to have a show on TV called Mataku and those stories use to freak me out as a kid. Would be cool to bring back a show like that with a lot more folklore in mind. Māori mythology and legends had always intrigued me and still do to this day.
Yea we have songs but funnily enough the story we were taught was about Hatu Patu's strength wierd isn't it cos although I know the history like you it scared me I shared the story with my grandchildren they feel the same it came up from a cousin and I talking about our favorite tribal stories she knew the song didn't really know the story I asked my grandchildren if they would like to go to where Hatu Patus famed story was I got a resounding no thank's nan I agree with you lots of stories in books I live in Wellington and taught te reo to adults so it's a story I shared some immigrants would be like ohhh whaea I like you other stories lol

Petition for Jon to post a messed up Disney episode on the black cauldron or the night on bald mountain segment from Fantasia. Also a messed up murders episode on Ed Gein.
SIGNED FOR BLACK CAULDRON
Yes.
Those are good ideas.
No. Nobody needs Jon to talk about Ed Gein. I get the sense that this is Jon's sweet spot. He doesn't need to add actual horror cases like that to this channel. I just don't think the kids need to have Ed's story in their brain. Nobody does.
I have no idea how the black cauldron passed as a kids’ movie. Rewatched it recently.... still terrifying.

Im a Maori European from NZ and i just want to say you did a good job with explaining this. There are so many myths surrounding Maui and im do happy you did an episode on this!
Jon Solo: Using americanised pronounciations of the islands and names while also apologizing in advance about it.
Every Polynesian in the comment section: And I took that personally.
It's not hard to do some research on proper pronunciation before making educational videos. "Maori" is not even close to sounding like "may-ori"
