In The Lion King II we are first introduced to Kovu as the heir to Scar who will one day end Simba’s reign and rule as king. Zira, the leader of the Outlanders, is described as his mother and Vitani and Nuka are his siblings, but we never learn who is father is meant to be.

Yesss! Hi have a theory: here it is guys. Kovu totally doesn’t look like Scar at all. Kovu fur color is darker and browned. He’s mane isn’t that blacked like Scars either. So Since Zoraroak was A loyalist to Scar and since Zoraroak Already has Nuka as a son and Vitani as a daughter. Scar probably was getting old and couldn’t produce a Better hire to succeed him. ( Nuka wasn’t that strong and he was clumsy) So Scar order Zira to seek out a mate who can bare him a Son. Zira being obsessed with pleasing and obeying Scar , travel and journeys away from PrideRock to find the perfect lion that is strong like Scar and looks like Scar.
She journey to the Tree of Life where there are so many Stronger lions there.

Later she return to see scar and after beings pregnant and pop out her cub which is Kovu.

As you guys stated the reason Scar adopted Kovu was probably because his fur is the same as his or that Kovu parents died in the reign of Scar and Scar and Zira decided this cub has potential to increase Scars army.
They would be responsible for any deaths or have a heart for taking care of a baby lion , when Scar has a history of killing his own Nephew, Simba, and friend Nala when they were young cubs.

I think the reason Kovu became Scar's successor was because he was the last child born in their gang and they took his appearance as a sign.

I have also heard a theory that Vitani is Nala's cub or her half sister (Sarafina's daugther) since they resemble each other and during the battle scene in Lion King 2 Vitani and Nala know each other's name but seem to have never really been introduced before (would be an interesting plot twist if Nala was her mother and denied that that was her cub and Vitani grew up knowing that because that would make her hate Kiara and Nala even more!)
That actually makes sense if Vitani was Nala's child because it could mean that in the madness of king Scar, Scar actually raped Nala. Since Scar made advances and never actually succeed this theory doesn't work. Great idea though

I always thought maybe Zira was barren, but was still expected to produce an heir for Scar, so she stole cubs from rogue lions and passed them off as her own. This might explain why Kovu looks so much like Scar, as she would've looked for cubs who shared similar traits to his.

lol, when I was a kid I assumed Scar was Kovu's father (despite Nuka saying he wasn't, I didn't even notice that...), yet it never once connected in my mind that this would make them cousins for some reason. Kids just don't care. It's a non-issue, really. Only parents might care but realistically speaking this is just how lions are. Well, if it was the original intent then I'm fine with just calling Scar his father and being done with it. pfft. Good video, though. :)

As a kid I always assumed he was Scar’s son, and I just kind of assumed that Nuka might’ve been lying about Scar not being Kovu’s father; there’s very clearly animosity between Nuka and Kovu, and I always interpreted that as Nuka trying to delegitimize Kovu’s importance and insult him. I just find it too coincidental that Scar would’ve picked anyone other than his own kid to be the heir to the throne

Anthony Cooper I think there is a theory that Nala's mother eloped with a male lion that her family didn't approve of and she was sent by her family to the pridelands were she gave birth to Nala and was supposed to be Scars mate before Scar went and killed Mufasa. So Scar is Nala's stepfather.

Technically speaking, it doesn't matter. Disney fucked up a lot of people about the truth of lions, for one, and people forget that lionesses prefer dark maned lions more than light maned lions. However, dark maned lions are more likely to be sterile because of their heat trapped by their dark fur. So yeah......also, in another video, people mentioned lions would send off the males to make their own prides. Nope. They would if they were their own, but lions produced by another male, the new king of the pride would kill the males and mate with the females. Yeah.....animals are freaky.

I know that in TLK 2 it's clearly stated that Scar isn't Kovu's father, but to me, it makes perfect sense that Nuka, Vitani and Kovu are both Zira and Scar's offsprings. The only thing is that the producers and writers prevented it just because the show is meant for kids, the lions should behave like humans, so "no incest".
But, just think: 1) they are lions, so it would be perfecly possible. 2) even human "royalty" from the past centuries approved some "incestuous" relations, i.e. between cousins or even uncle/niece!
So, I'm sorry to say that, but the original idea of the script (with Kovu as the son of Scar) is the one that fits best.
In Japan cousins actually do fall in love not siblings anymore but for some reason they don't care if their distant cousins they showed that in a lot of Anime especially the Classics

Alright, I'm going to throw my personal theory into the mix. Firstly, I'm going to say that I do firmly believe that Scar was intended to be Kovu's biological father. It fits the story perfectly; not only with their similarity in looks, but also Kovu's distress when he sees a bit of Scar mirrored in himself in TLK2. To me, it seemed like a truly personal moment when he sees Scar's reflection talking over his own, as though he did not want to become the hated lion his 'father' was. I don't think it would hold the same importance if Scar was not his relative (you don't look at your flaws and think, omg, I'm turning into someone I hardly know - it needs to be a person of some deep significance to you). Also, it fits the bill regarding the 'child of evil is not evil himself' kind of common narrative used as a plot line in so many stories. ANYWAY, let me get to the point here.
My previous statement aside, I believe that Kovu is the child of Zira and a male lion, presumably from the Outlands. Although it is implied, it does not state that Nuka or Vitani are Scar's children. That could possibly mean that all three of Zira's children came from another father, and for some reason, be it the death of her previous mate, or some other reason, Zira left and became Scar's devoted follower/mate in the Pridelands with her trio of cubs. Another point to be made, is that if Nuka and Vitai ARE Scar's offspring, Zira would have had to have mated with another lion whilst still in a relationship with Scar. This could be due to the fact that Scar was making advances on Nala to produce an heir, as he thought his existing children were not fit to rule. Nuka was too weak to ever be king, and maybe he wished for a male successor, casting Vitani out of the picture. Seeing Nala's strength and nobility, he believed that by mating with her, they would rear a cunning and strong cub fit to rule. Zira, angered by this, mated with a rouge lion, which led to Kovu. With Nala's disappearance, and the lack of the next generation of kings, Scar showed a rare display of forgiveness to Zira, and took in her 'bastard' son as his own, especially after noticing the young cub's potential. Kovu may not even have been aware that Scar was not his father (hence my first point being somewhat true) as this fact is only ever mentioned by Nuka, and spoken under his breath in front of Vitani, as he is the only cub of the three old enough to remember. And that's my theory for you! :)

It makes somewhat sense because between the lion king and the lion king two she could have had both Vitani and Kovu and then have Kiara at the beginning of the lion king two. In the lion king Nala and Simba were separated and because of the massive drought Scar needed offspring and scientifically when a new lion comes to a pride they need to mate with the new pride's lioness. And don't get me wrong but the shade of Nala and the shade of Scar they could have a light cub like Vitani and a dark cub Kovu. But my point is that Kovu is the biological son of Scar because it makes sense genetically
Nala probably gave them up because she couldn't raise them and she met Zira giving the young cubs to her because she didn't want Scar's offspring.
When I saw the second movie, in the Spanish version, Nuka said "Scar wasn't even his father, they adopted him" so... I always thought that neither of them was a familiar of Kovu, because of the "They" obviously, but I never stop to think about it.
Now I think I could say something as random as the fact that Zira one day during the Scar's kingdom saw a little lion that looked like Scar so she took him with her just because.
But while I was writing this I started to think more and I get the fact that 1: Watching the way that Simba grew up on the exiled, maybe Zira and Scar met and have children during it and Nuka was a "puppy" (I'm still learning English, don't judge me) when Scar died, maybe Kovu's edge on the second movie, so he lived the dead of his father and the exiled from his home too, turning him to evil and wishing to had his revenge. When he wasn't the chosen one, he started to hate Kovu.
2: Vitani could have just birth or have just some days of life, maybe not, but that's not the exact point.
3: Last but not least, it might be that living the exiled and the dead of his husband, Zira is obviously angry as hell, so when she sees a little "puppy" that looks like Scar, she want to have him no matter what, and took him with her maybe killing the real fathers or just run away

Bruh Scar is Kovu's dad. And frankly Simba and Nala are related because there can only be one male in a pride. So honestly, this is normal considering that lions do this. The Lion King would make better sense if they stop having lions mimick human behavior

That...is actually a good question. Especially since it's heavily implied Duchess is a house cat, so one of two possibilities: 1) Madam hand-picked a father from one of her aristocratic friends who owned a tom cat, or 2) Duchess met an alley cat outside the house (since there is a pet door for her and the kittens to come in and out through) and became pregnant with his litter.
i heard from this place that zira's sister had vitani and kovu then when trying to get her first kill she was killed then handed over to zira to take care of and so that might tie in for what you said about kovu beinging a orphan

What if... Zira had a cub but lost it/it died (from the drought or starvation) and her maternal instinct allowed her to adopt Kovu who would have been an orphan whom managed to survive alone (this may have been a sign or showed Zira or Scar some sort of potential or strength) and in the end, they took him in to become Scar's successor? Just a suggestion ^.^

SCP-096 : The Shy Guy Sister lionesses are known to adopt each other’s cubs if one sister dies or is no longer able to care for them. I think that’s how it was for Vitani and Kovu. I’ve watched Lion King 2 several times, and while Nuka clearly accepts Vitani and trusts her--I have never once heard him call her his little sister.
I feel like kovu's parents are Rani's parents since they all look alike, and kovu's eye color is similar to queen Janna's. Maybe Scar used to be friends with Rani's dad but are now enemies so for revenge he stole kovu as a newborn cub.
But the problem is they are from Asia and scar is from Africa it is impossible for those lions to met because they're from separate continent.

First cousin once removed actually. Scars son (Kovu) and Simba would be first cousins because their fathers were brothers. Kovu and Kiara would be first cousins once but one generation removed. I did a lot of research on the subject at one point because I wanted to know how all of the terminology worked.

How about the fact that the lion guard doesn't take place after the lion king 2? In the lion guard, we meet kovu who's still young, and his family including nuka and zira who are both still alive. In this episode, rafiki warns the lion guard about these lions. So... yeah, the lion guard happens after kiara meets kovu but before either grow up.

Well, judging by TLG, we DO see some lions that share a LOT of similarities with Kovu. The Night Pride, while theorized to live in Asia, do share some similarities to Kovu (in my opinion.) Baliyo, especially. He looks almost like Kovu with blue eyes and Elvis Presley hair. Janna is the only one in the pride with green eyes, however. Though, it's theoretically possible for genes to be passed from two generations ago.

I was actually going to suggest that based on the lion guard that kovu might be related to the night pride either being Rani's cousin from her uncle surak or maybe even a second brother to rani since in the brief moment we see rani talking to her father and mother who had indeed passed on or as they say in the show completed their journey on the circle of life. My idea about Kovu's dad started when I was a kid (when "TLK 2" first came out), and it also started with his older brother, Nuka. Back then, I believed that Nuka and Kovu were HALF-siblings, meaning that Scar was Nuka's father. Seeing how his son turned out, Scar realized that Nuka would be unfit for kingship. So, he told Zira to find a similar-looking rogue lion to create a new heir, kind of like the animal version of a sperm donor. This lion would be the father of Kovu and Vitani, who I believed were twins. Why twins? Because they're the only two Outlanders with bluish-green eyes. Also, going back to Nuka, it would explain the extreme jealousy he felt towards his younger brother. It would continue the cycle started by Scar, directed at HIS brother.

Maybe Zira was just some piece of meat to scar? Zira was insane, and there truly girls out there that think just because we've made love to them, means we love them. That's not always the case, and in Scar's situation being king (and a giant douche) I wouldn't put it past him to treat Zira in such a way.
He's definitely the father of the two boys. Maybe Zira had her daughter with another cub. (since Scar was sleeping around, example being him hitting on Nala.)

Kovu's siblings must have heard this, which is why they also have their doubts about Kovu and Scar's relationship. Also, they were kids, stuff like that leaves an impression. Especially since Kovu's brother Nuka is jealous to begin with? For sure he's gonna side with scar.
After Scar tells Zira this, it breaks her heart. So she leaves pride rock to go cry. Her cubs follow her to comfort her. When she's level headed, she heads back to pride rock, but notices the flames....
When she returns, she sees a broken Scar.... She goes to comfort him... With Scar's dying breath, he choses names the unborn cub Kovu, and chooses him to be the next king.
He chose Kovu either because he felt bad for what he told Zira, or because he saw how his older son wasn't fit to be king, or because he knows what it's like to be the younger brother and see your older brother become king, or whatever. Point is, he has his reasons.
Zira's other two cubs hear this. When Scar passes, she let's out a little frustration on Nuka. Saying how he could have helped scar, despite being a pre teen cub with barely any black fur on his head. She then goes straight to simba to attack, this causes her to get her butt kicked, and eventually banished. Simba also sends any other lionesses who were loyal to scar with Zira. Zira leaves, but swears her revenge on the man who killed her king.... And the rest is history.

My theory is that Scar was displeased with Nuka as his heir. A visiting lion introduced himself and his newborn son to Scar. Because of his physical similarities to him, Scar sent out Zira and some of his most devoted lionesses to steal Kovu from his parents and then Scar planned to pass him off as his heir. While they were away Simba returned and Scar died. When Zira returned with Kovu they fought to retake the kingdom for themselves but lost, thus they were banished.

Here's my take:
Zira is Vitani and Kovu's grandmother. At some point during Mufasa's reign, her mate died, leaving her with a daughter, who would be in the same generation as Simba and Nala. Then, Zira became Scar's mate, having a son, Nuka. When Scar died, Zira was widowed and her daughter became a rogue male's mate. Zira's daughter had Vitani and Kovu before dying, leaving Zira to take them in.

All he knows is Scar isn 't his REAL father. I have readed the story on TH-cam long time ago it's not in The Lion King books but it is a serie so maybe you can find on TH-cam I don't know how I'd just did pt. You can follow Scar and Mufasa as cubs and watch them all up till Simba becomes king too.

And as Zira was so loyal to Scar she kept her weird and raised Kovu as her own. And Kovu having no other choice learned the wrong side of the story of Scar until he fully heard it from Simba

I took the time to draw connections between Kovu & the lions at the Tree of Life. I think, based off of everything, Kovu is potentially related to Queen Janna of the Tree of Life in the Lion Guard. It’s possible his brother might be Surak as well, only assuming he really is related to Janna, making him Janna’s son like Surak because of the timeline. Or, he could be a first cub of Sahasi, Janna’s other son, and would have gotten the green eyes from Janna. It is important to note that both Rani and Kovu show plenty similarities, including personality. Now of course, this would mean that Sahasi would have had to mated with Zira, which is possible. Baliyo, being the youngest child of Sahasi, and Kovu, possibly being the first and oldest child of Sahasi, also show some similarities. Their fur color is the same shade, as is their underfur. Both have a curl at the top of their mane, though Baliyo’s is larger. Their mane color is also exactly the same, or at least extremely close. Sahasi and Kovu share the same jaw and head shape, as well.
Edit: After looking into it more, I found Zira is NOT Kovu’s biological mother. Director Darrell Rooney described Kovu as an orphan, meaning Zira is not his biological mother, and we already know Scar isn’t his father. This leaves another possible candidate, Ananda, the mate of Sahasi and the mother of Rani & Baliyo.
I'm POSITIVE Kovu really is Scar's son (or incarnation) but the movies doesn't hint it and only vaguely implies that he is. Disney has always been one of those franchises that encourages fan speculations so it's likely possible. :)

Kovu was originally going to be Scar's son when TLK II was in development but they decided to cast him as a mere follower of Scar and not biologically related to him in any way so that Kovu's relationship with Kiara doesn't raise concerns of promoting incest since Kiara is related to Simba, Scar's brother. They were even going to scrape all of Kovu's affiliation with Scar but decided to just eliminate the biological relationship. This is exactly why Kovu's name, appearance, and his script is closely related to Scar.

There is no defined answer by Disney. Scar was originally going to be the father, but Disney scratched that idea so I explain who the father could be. I give the lions who could be the father, state which one I think it would if it wasn't Scar and then let the viewer decide who they think the father is because there isn't an actual canonical answer.

It’s very much unlikely that Zira is Kovu’s biological mother, considering the fact that Vitani is so close in age to him, the fact that Kovu is last born means they can’t be twins either. Which is also unlikely. Also considering the fact that Vitani would be bigger if she’s a year older.All of this leads to the fact that Zira isn’t his real mother.
I can see three option;
One: really, just a nomade lion.

Also somwher I saw that around 2017 that disany perched 20th century fox so maybe some of the films from that made a prodictive assumption of the buy out that happened years later because both Disney and fox did a lot of for shadowing about what was going to happen later on in their cartoons.
