1:15:38 CONVERSATIONS OFTEN REQUIRE A LOT OF WISDOM When should you speak and when should u stay silent? Sometimes even if you honestly think they're wrong, it is good to still keep listening so you can figure outwhat led them to that position (and how strongly they believe it). Sometimes also, the longer you listen to them the more likely they'll be to hear out another perspective. This can, to some degree, let you also gauge whether you should engage with them in conversation or debate. And if so, if it is even possible to get them to see other perspectives... so long as it's done constructively.
20:05 I’m glad he made that distinction. So many people say “perception is reality” which is wrong. Reality is reality, but people only have their (flawed) perception to access reality.
I grew up Christian and conservative, being born in 1983 and growing up in the south, my town was 50/50 white and black and poor. We pledged allegiance every morning in school and everyone generally got along. Race was never much of a focus for anyone, we grew up in the time of movement songs "We are the world" and "Black or white". I never experienced hyper racialization until around 2010. I miss my formative years of the 90's and early 00's when everyone just got along. My brand of nationalism is America first, lets have fair trade so that our workers have jobs vs giving them to slaves in other countries. Lets allow immigrants, but not so many that it robs less skilled/blue collar Americans or legal migrants of their jobs and affordable housing. We also have to consider how us taking in all of the skilled labor and educated professionals hurts the countries they come from. I'm sure Nigeria needs doctors and lawyers way more than we do, same as a lot of other countries that they are coming here from.
Well... Daryl Davis was one big let down. He just repeats the same stories that I've heard from him like 100 times before, and when things go outside of one os his stories, he's just talking nonsense(like the positive/negate freedom question). And don't get me wrong, I like what he does, he however really shouldn't be on panels like these.
it’s an artificial appreciation. ppl, especially ppl on the right, love grandstanding about crossing party lines, but they absolutely hate when someone legitimately intellectually challenging does it, it feels threatening and the appeal suddenly disappears. daryl is a very non-threatening party line crosser, so ppl enjoy him i was just talking about this the other day in regards to the show survivor. the winners are never the ppl who do the most effective and plentiful moves (given that those ppl make it to the end) because ppl r too flustered and upset by getting blindsided to vote for who actually deserves it; instead, the person that can be seen as playing the hardest without being intellectually threatening usually wins
He is a great speaker but in a way that lends to one on one interviews and casual chats, like podcasts. A panel like this is not at all where his strengths as a speaker shine.

At around 28:00 there’s a lot of discussion about nationalists and one of the other panels even suggests that nationalism doesn’t have to be right wing or racist. Nationalism is not the same as just being patriotic. The thing they characterizes nationalism is the idea that there are certain cultural values that are essential to the goodness and spirit of the nation. It’s not just that they want what’s best for the nation - it’s that they also think there is a cultural epicenter to what makes the nation good. This is why American nationalists often are enamored with certain timeframes (e.g., the 1950’s) - they believe that time period reflects the best or essentialized version of the country and seek to return to it by a focus on cultural values. They generally don’t care directly about economics - not that the don’t care at all - they simply feel that if we achieve the cultural values they seek, good economics will follow in the long-term, even if it means economic sacrifices in the short-term (e.g., reducing immigration). Naturally, this yearning for a uniting culture almost always means that nationalists want a very homogenous sort of nation. In addition, due to America’s history with treatment of minorities, nationalism tends to go hand in hand with racial or religious prejudices, especially in America. So, while I suppose technically you can imagine a left wing or non-racist version of nationalism, it certainly isn’t common. Generally, because of the cultural homogeneity, depending on how you define the left-right spectrum, I’d say most often nationalism is by definition not left wing.

I know Daryl is a cool person and all, but it's actually hilarious how he does not understand that there is a question being asked of him and just states all of the things he thinks are important.
daryl has done more then anyone on stage, he dont need to answer shit lol

I really enjoy listening to Daryl, I think he's a very verbose and interesting speaker, but I FEEL like he was kind of railroading this conversation for a while in a way that could not be reasonably or responsibly interrupted.
Every time he speaks he's speaking his own thing.
Yeah, he is better in a discussion/interview format, not a debate panel.
It started out a debate but when he spoke it felt more like a lecture hall. Everyone just listening cause his voice is great.
The type of conversations Daryl was having is better suited for an interview or a TED talk type format. It didn't really lend itself well to a debate panel, where his stories felt long-winded and required a lengthy setup. Nonetheless, it's enjoyable to hear this mans wisdom being shared, especially with a young audience.
He's definitely got good words but I think it's alittle unwise and not respectful to be on a panel with so many people and keep talking. .
Man, Daryl is such an outstanding human being. Truly amazing
God damn this is so much better than orbiter drama, keep it coming please
Best panel I have seen in a long time. Good faith conversation with fantastic individuals
Can’t believe Destiny got to be on a panel with Daryl. What a legend

Love Daryl Davis, but this needed more Destiny/ Peter vs the rest
I too was personally really looking forward to hearing Peter and Destiny discussions. Still an enjoyable video, just not what I was expecting
Maybe they should screen people who are asking questions to make sure they are coherent and succinct. They will be able to get many more questions in if they do so.
Finally some Daryl content.

EXACTLY. I’m feeling gaslit.
Daryl is a great speaker but not a good panelist.
Agreed, but he's interesting and inspirational enough that I don't really care. I'll gladly take him soliloquizing about anything under the sun over having to hear conservatives bloviate over the same talking points over and over and over and over.

Great conversation. I've heard him say it in a discussion with destiny before, but I really love Peter's line about telling people its a great answer when they simply say I dont know. Dont take it as a weapon to attack them with because they are "dumb" and dont know something. Such a simple but very powerful idea
33:45 This is true, I’ve told my friend group that if they ask me a question and I don’t know, I’ll tell them. I also used to do what I called a “mental exercise” where if they didn’t know we’d both propose a hypothesis on what we think the answer is based on the knowledge we currently have. Then we look it up and find out the right answer, this way we work through problems to see as close to an answer as we can. To me, this is the difference between knowledge and intelligence

Lots of people loving on the Daryl guy. No offense but he takes a year to tell a quick story. I cringed every time someone asked him a question. @Mysticvanee Agree wholeheartedly! I would love to hear him and Destiny talk. The music connection is especially there I think!

@@gal.h.musicstuff1209 There have been 3(?) folks Destiny has talked to at length about music over the last few years I've been listening. Two stuck out as brainrot; Fanatiq, who is a bit unhinged and some Nationalist dude going on about how "classical music is the marker of a civilized society" -- just batsh@t insane. There was one woman (recently, dont remember who) who had the first interesting back/forth I've heard about the topic in a longgggg time. Voosh mentioned music once in passing with Rem vs Destiny, and he sounded like an idiot. Since Destiny majored in music, still plays and is interested, it would be fun to hear Daryl and he chat about music history, the influence of Jazz, which Destiny has brought up a few times etc. etc. Especially from someone (Daryl) who has been around a long time and has played professionally in a multitude of places.

Did destiny major in music? I thought he dropped out?
I'm not denying your perspective. Just interesting to me.
In my view from the last music debate, destiny seems not very well informed, and in my opinion he performed poorly on that debate. Now it does not mean that he can't have that connection with Daryl, but it does raise for me the question of how well can destiny be humble and let the other person to actually educate him on music. I really hope that from the last debate and his take, it made him really question his own knowledge in music.
This is the best episode of this series so far
1:15:38 CONVERSATIONS OFTEN REQUIRE A LOT OF WISDOM
When should you speak and when should u stay silent?
Daryl Davis's story 38:45 about the individual from the Klan was extremely moving.
I'm hoping Destiny can get him on a stream one day just for a chat
Could hear Daryl talk for hours, his cadence is so good as well.
He got that James earl Jones voice.

Destiny already debated normie Republicans on stream. His own mother, several times.
Love Daryl Davis and glad to see him here. Destiny should have him on as a guest. I could listen to his stories all day.

This felt like this panel got a lot further than any other destiny has in a while. It is definitely a refreshing change.
Peter Boghossian was my professor at PSU lol its surreal seeing him in a panel with Destiny
Well... Daryl Davis was one big let down. He just repeats the same stories that I've heard from him like 100 times before, and when things go outside of one os his stories, he's just talking nonsense(like the positive/negate freedom question). He also barely engages with what others say and when he gets a question he again regurgitates one of his stories.
No clue why people here in the comments love him so much on this panel. And don't get me wrong, I like what he does, he however really shouldn't be on panels like these.
it’s an artificial appreciation. ppl, especially ppl on the right, love grandstanding about crossing party lines, but they absolutely hate when someone legitimately intellectually challenging does it, it feels threatening and the appeal suddenly disappears. daryl is a very non-threatening party line crosser, so ppl enjoy him
i was just talking about this the other day in regards to the show survivor. the winners are never the ppl who do the most effective and plentiful moves (given that those ppl make it to the end) because ppl r too flustered and upset by getting blindsided to vote for who actually deserves it; instead, the person that can be seen as playing the hardest without being intellectually threatening usually wins
He is a great speaker but in a way that lends to one on one interviews and casual chats, like podcasts. A panel like this is not at all where his strengths as a speaker shine.
I agree with others when they say Darryl Davis is a great storyteller, not a debater.
Daryl is one of the best disciples of Jesus Christ I have witnessed. Bless that man and may his example spread.
Bro looks like Napoleon Dynamite and Quasimodo had a kid.
Destiny did great overall, however, I want to point out this incredibly awkward moment he got himself into @ 1:04:33 when talking to Daryl.
I think Destiny should consider no longer using soy leftist words/terms like "your community," "cis women/men," "people of color," etc
Especially when talking to humans that are non radicals or don't live online.
Yeah this was a sign for me that I'm horrifically online minded, because when Daryl said that I legitimately rolled my eyes. I had to take a second and realize, oh, he's not a super online debate bro. This is probably a normal answer for people who aren't hyper autistic like me apparently lol
There needs to be better moderation. Daryl is a great guy but his rambling stories shouldn't dominate the time. Same way Alex Jones' ranting and constant interruption dominate any panel that he's on.
Daryl's random storytime panel.

Daryl’s demeanor, his openness and willingness to teach and share the goodness of life with the confused and misled is precisely the attitude needed to combat bigotry-which vastly differs from the ‘It’s not my job to educate you’ rhetoric that you hear from people who *claim* they wish to solve said problem.

Generally, because of the cultural homogeneity, depending on how you define the left-right spectrum, I’d say most often nationalism is by definition not left wing.
please let this act as an official end to the brainrotting orbiter drama
I have no idea what to take away from any of this.
Daryl is one of my idiols. I wish I could be more like he is.
