As a young child/toddler when the Carpenters first hit it big I didn't have as much sophistication to pick apart a song, but I remember how warm, sincere and comforting her voice was to me at the time. Each new hit of theirs felt like it was being sung to me personally and just had the effect that maybe a lullaby has on a baby. At that age we're so impressionable and I'm glad I had her voice as I first experienced life starting out. It is an indelible part of my memories of childood.
It's been a minute since I've seen you here PTX! I have listened to their song Hallelujah before, and it was breath-taking. What is your favorite song from them?
Kaysee here ... I'm so glad to see you react to another Carpenters song. I was a fan back in the 1970's and at 64, I'm still a fan. I think once a fan, always a fan. Karen's voice and Richard's harmonies still give me chills. Yep, that's Richard standing beside Karen. I'd love for you to react to "Yesterday Once More"... my favourite Carpenters song. Keep up the good work.
This was one of the first songs that caught my interest when I was a child. The Carpenters were definitely a group that shaped my musical preferences for years to come. Of course, now at 63, I still listen to them and some of my favorite reaction videos are those watching the person reacting as they listen to these songs for the first time!! Great reaction!!

For We’ve Only Just Begun, yes that’s Richard next to her, and yes, all the background vocals are sung by Karen and Richard. Their harmonies were always amazing. Be sure to react to their Christmas music too, since Christmas will soon be here: Merry Christmas Darling Santa Claus Is Coming To Town (the slow ballad version).

Karen and Richard did all the backing vocals to their songs except for the song ‘Now’ as Karen recorded the lead vocal, but died before the backing vocals were done. There were a few other songs where a couple of extra singers were included in the backing, but you honestly couldn’t really tell. With the song ‘Now’ though, it is quite clear there is no Karen in the background, but it still sounded beautiful.
Try Yesterday Once More, For All We Know, This Masquerade, A Song For You just to name a few. Karen is the GOAT of female singers of all time, as well as being an amazing drummer. Try some videos of her drumming skills also. It's a rabbit hole of pure pleasure.
Dan, that is definitely Richard in the pageboy haircut next to Karen. As amazing as Karen's voice and skill as a drummer is, Richard deserves just as much credit. He started first, discovered and encouraged Karen's voice, wrote most of the songs and tailored them to fit her style. He also plays a lot of instruments. He didn't write this one though; it was an old TV commercial for starting out in life as newlyweds with Crocker Bank helping out with a loan, LOL. Richard loved it so much he got the writers to finish it with a full version for them to record. This was their third big hit early in their career.
Hi Dan, Great choice as this was both an early song, 2nd album and 3rd single released. A #2 on the Hot 100. It started life as a Crocker Bank commercial. Paul Williams and Roger Nichols wrote it and were also on the A&M lot. So when Richard saw the commercial he recognized Paul’s singing and found him on the lot and asked about the song. The rest as they say… Also the vast majority of their songs was Karen and Richard only doing layered backgrounds. There WERE exceptions but small in. Number when Karen was alive. Great reaction and I encourage you to continue your Carpenters journey. They were of my youth and teens. I love seeing younger folks discovering them all anew. Oh and Perfect Blend left some great songs to explore. I want to also introduce you to a singer I’ve been following for almost a year now. Since the example song is what you just watched, it’s perfect timing. Her name is Tori Holub (Ha Lubb) and she’s now 21, was 20 for this song the SAME age as Karen was. A little bit of background, she was one of 8 invited performers at the Carpenters 55th Anniversary this past April. She met Richard there for the first time, in person. She was invited well before this song was released, so there’s more to her than this one song. That said this song is a fantastic example of what went into its making. James Wilkas is the genius behind the technical look and sound of it. He also played multiple instruments with a group of musicians from around the world. There is a full credit list at the end of the video and a detailed description with the video, for reference. I will ask to please, if you react to it, show the entire rectangle of the video. Karen's mom always encouraged and praised Richard as the child prodigy, often overlooking Karen or making remarks that she should be more like him. There may have been some jealousy or resentment there, but she didn't give Karen a lot of overt love or emotional support. Karen was always insecure (which is why a review in the paper referring to her as "Richard's chubby kid sister" affected her so much and led her on a destructive path that killed her). She always wanted love and did marry at the end of the decade, but he was a jerk and took advantage of her and it was over before it even started. She never found love and then died a few years later. That is why "Goodbye To Love" should be your next big hit from them. It also has an electric guitar rock instrumental, which was astonishing for them and alienated some of their older adult listeners (and was the only time they got brief respect from their own younger hippie generation).
