No, a very talented writer of the 70s mostly named Paul Williams wrote this song. Lots of hit songs for him. Richard Carpenter was one who did the behind the scenes stuff for Them. That was his skillset. Karen was mainly a drummer. That was her passion. She was asked if she sang and they encouraged her to do that instead.

All the people that are just discovering the Carpenters are finding what a lot of us older folks knew for years. Her voice is just undescribably beautiful. It's seriously hard to describe how wonderful it is.
Philip I agree with you!! I’m kinda of envious of those who are now discovering and enjoying Karen’s beautiful voice I want to experience that once again!! I only listened to the Carpenters on the radio back in the 1970’s although I was still a kid!! I cried my eyes out when I heard that she passed. There’ll never be another Karen Carpenter. 😢
We often ask "why?" That is never answerable. If we understand the moment is now, then the why goes away. We are lucky to have experienced the Carpenters, as I first did in the 70's as a teen, or as you have done now in some of most polarizing moments of our daily lives...the Carpenters arrived for you perfectly now, just as they did for me then. And today, too!
I love that Herb Albert took on the Carpenters, let the Carpenters perform they wanted, when other music studios wouldn't even sign them up . Kudos ! Carpenters , magic ! ❤
This song, written by Paul Williams, was used in a bank commercial. Richard Carpenter asked Williams if he had a full-length version of the song that he and his sister could use as a single.
And the funny this is that he did not have a full-length version at the time but he said "of course I do", hung up and wrote the rest of the song right then and there🤣
Karens voice is so unique and emotive. Just a gorgeous voice. Richard’s arrangements and both of their musical talents. Superb! This was a no. 1 wedding song. It started as a short for a bank commercial. Karen’s voice was just magic! ❤❤
surely the most beautiful, warm, rich, intimate, clear, pure, perfect pitch and tone voice ever. Also the most perfect dictione/enunciation of any vocalist (she was a vocalist not just a great singer) I've ever heard....
So many think the opposite of Love is hate but that's not true they run hand in hand. (The opposite of Love is indifference). If you can muster up enough emotion to hate somebody you can also love them. Anyone who's been married for many years knows some days you love them some days you hate them😂

This was written for a bank commercial that Richard heard on the television. After the Carpenters were done with it, it became a very popular wedding song.
Karen's voice was a gift form The Father. I don't know her beliefs but i like to think she is with The One who gave her that gift. I hope someday to hear it again.

Richard Carpenter wrote songs, yes. He also did all the arrangements for the Carpenters. He was a perfectionist. He also had an ear for picking the right material for his sister's voice. However, this song was written by Paul Williams and it was a jingle for a Bank commercial (Crocker Bank). Richard Carpenter heard the jingle and recognized Paul Williams' singing voice in the jingle. Richard Carpenter said to himself, "This is a hit" and he called up Paul Williams and asked him if there was a full version of the song. Paul Williams would have said "Yes", even if there wasn't a full version because getting a Carpenters record was a big deal back then . . . and the rest of course was history. Yes, this song was played as the first dance between a bride and groom at a lot of weddings back in the early 70s. Beautiful song.
You’ve just discovered them because it wasn’t your era….and the wonderful thing is you’re now OLD ENOUGH to appreciate the talent and beauty of the Carpenters. At almost 63, I’ve been listening to this song released August 21, 1970-just before I turned 9 years old. Back then it was just a really good song by the Carpenters. Today, after 44 years of marriage (at beginning of October) the words have REAL meaning. You are 100%, marriage is NOT easy. It has its ups and downs, good times and not so good. I have said more than once (many times, actually) that I will ALWAYS love my husband, but there are times that I do not like him very much. I’m sure he feels the same about me.😁

I loved the Carpenters since I was a kid. My parents had a record - this music is at the core of everything that is truthfully our real longings and what makes a positive life.
She had perfect pitch and the best vibrato out there. Angelic voice and very talented drummer which she liked doing the best. She had a very talented brother who did everything behind the scene plus contributing to the sound. That set was on a TV show, don't remember which one, maybe Ed Sullivan or the Smothers Brothers.
Of all their hits, this really is their signature song. It even made Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. And I like the fact that you gave us your own personal reflection on this one.
You couldn't go to a wedding in the 1970s without this song being played! And also "Sunrise Sunset" from Fiddler on the Roof. These 2 songs were played at just about every 70s wedding
In 1971 and 1972 I saw the Carpenters in person, I loved their show and Karen and Richard were not only musically talented they had a sense of humor that they put into their show. What I can remember is that I didn't want the show to end. Also I graduated in 1972 and this was my classes theme song. This is from a 71 year old. I still have the ticket stubs from those concerts!
One of the greatest female singers of all time. Karen was also a very talented drummer. The Carpenters were hugely popular back in the early 70's...I still own my Carpenters Greatest Hits album!
There is such a wealth of music by them. I spent a lot of time singing along when Karen was on the radio, and later when I was able to buy their recordings. Richard was an amazing arranger. Part of their super-power was writing and arranging the harmonies, whether they wrote the song or not. When you hear their two voices layered into tight 4-, 5- or 6-part harmonies, it's like heaven on earth. ❤
This was our wedding song in 1977. It's especially poignant to look back over 47 years of marriage and all the life we've lived together: the ups and downs, the births of our babies and grandbabies, losing parents and seeing one another through surgeries, buying our first home and our dream home...every day is a new beginning and yet when we started, we had no idea what was in store. All we knew was we would be together through it all.
Sadly, Karen's own marriage in 1980 ended tragically only just several months after having reluctantly said " I do" . She found out that her fiance lied to her about wanting to have children which he knew was very important to her. He never told her about his vasectomy until just a few days before the wedding. Karen obviously felt betrayed and wanted to cancel the wedding. However, she still followed the advice of her mother and still married him. Once married, her spouse used Karen like his own personal bank account living way beyond his means asking her for carry around money, sometimes taking as much as $50,000 or more at a time from her. He was allegedly cruel to her and belittled her especially regarding her weight loss. In November 1981, she filed for divorce after 14 months. Karen fought valiantly to come back from this failed marriage and even her family hoped and prayed that her mental and physical health would continuously improve. Her last recorded major hit can be seen as a live rendition of "Touch Me When We're Dancing" in 1981 and surprisingly the B side of that single called "Because We Are in Love" was actually used by Karen as her own wedding song. How very tragic when you think about it.
@@jwayne7400 Karen was very career focused most of her life. The one love she knew she could always count on was her fans. I only wish she could have learned to love herself just as much.

She had a voice like no other and their harmonies were amazing! Her version of A Song for You is one of the most haunting songs ever. You should react to it.
The Carpenters was my first concert in 1972. I was 12, and it was great! Karen's voice was incredible. This was when she was able to play the drums more before they made her be basically the front person. You should watch the videos of her playing the drums. It's on a variety show. There is pure joy on her face. She always said she was a drummer who could sing. Song by the incredible Paul Williams.
It's the heartfelt simplicity of it. She didn't have to vocal acrobatics to stop people in their tracks. Her voice is one of those that once you hear it, you never forget it. I love On Top Of The World and many more.
I Love your reaction to this one!! It is one of my favorites by The Carpenters. I was a senior in high school when this came out and it was the theme for our senior prom! I was already engaged to my boyfriend, we have been married almost 53 years now. So this song has a special place in my heart!!

Richard Carpenters skills are underappreciated. Their records always sounded better than most.

Black Pegasus, "We've Only Just Begun" was written by Roger Nichols (music) and Paul Williams (lyrics). Rolling Stone magazine designated it as one of the 500 greatest songs of all time. Indeed, it was played at many weddings after the Carpenters recorded it and it became a huge hit.
The Carpenters were so ahead of their time. But in the history of music, they own a special place of sheer beauty.
Their Christmas music is definitely worth checking out when the time comes around. It’s awesome and her voice is perfect for that time of year.
I had this song sung at my wedding back in 1974. ❤
Close to you Carpenters ❤
I've been listening to them for 50 plus years. When I just want to sit and chill, there's nothing better than listening to them.
The most beautiful voice.
Both musical geniuses. Karen is also a world Class drummer.
Her voice is the most powerful and angelic voice of all time!!!
Fly high my angelic angel!❤❤❤
