What type of grass and location? I overseeded with his Blue Heat KBG and am trying to figure out the right height, fertilizer, and water schedule combo. I definitely think I should have gone higher N in the summer again this year.
Pete you are 100% correct. I have irrigation and run it so my lawn wants for nothing water wise. But when actual rainfall comes the green up and growth rate explode, especially after a drought. I think it has to do with nitrogen in the rainwater, and the fact that the N is applied when the temps are a bit cooler because of the rain, almost like applying Greene Punch in the spring. But whatever it is the differences between rainwater and city water are night and day.
Lol. As long as you water KBG, if you feed it in the summer all those extra hours of sunshine and food make it grow like crazy. Just cut it taller, 3-4". Even with 85-95 degree stretches in Minnesota I was cutting 2-3" every other day to get back down to 4" height of cut. Just nuts. I think the low summer nitrogen programs are misleading. They don't consider fungicide programs which can offset the "potential" of disease pressure from excess top growth. I see it all the time, water alone isn't enough to push through the summer months - they need a little energy from fert to keep going. Just a thought... But it's the whole program that leads to success.
I suspect that there’s something in the atmosphere that accompanies a rainfall that makes rain special. Otherwise, the rainwater I pump from a retention pond would be equally nourishing.

I keep hearing people say that KBG needs a lot of water. But that just hasn't been my experience. I'm in NC and I'm in the same boat as Pete but the KBG that I have does better than my TTTF. I over seeded my TTTF a few years ago. I barely water my backyard and the KBG has almost taken over the whole yard. And it has pretty much taken over my front yard and I do water about an inch a week. I don't like the color because I can tell it's not as dark as my fescue Just my 2 cents I think any first year seed needs a lot of water.
Some people say that rain during a thunder storm is rich in nitrogen, created by the electric current in the lightning. City water has chlorine in it so that’s bad for heat stressed plants. I say that the rain comes directly from The Almighty. That’s why it’s the best for everything else that He created.
Hey Pete, I’m right down the road from you in Thomasville. I’m thinking about getting in the fertilizer game. I literally am going from being a Respiratory Therapist to lawn care so I don’t know much. What are your suggestions?? Should I just hire it out and stick to mowing??
Do it all yourself, Pete will walk you through everything right here! The results are a thousand times more enjoyable when it's DIY. There isn't much beyond watering and mowing (a little green-up fertilzer, maybe) right now anyway with the summer heat
I think my cool season did a little better with more summer fert but its bad for me. I can't handle mowing in 110+ in the summer. I would have to keep up 2x a week.
1.14 lbs of N per 1000 sq ft is what you used. I put 5 lbs of your Blue Heat in my Fescue last fall (9000 sq ft lawn) and it looked great in April/May and part of June. We've had 1" of rain here in Nashville in about the last 7 weeks. I have irrigation, but on city water wasn't going to have a huge water bill every month to make the grass a little greener. The heat really put it down more so than the water, lot of days with low temps in the 75s, and highs above 95. Grass is a having a hard time...and seed prices! Ouch lol
Looks amazing! Have a question, I live in northern Alabama. I am trying to decide what grass seed would be the best to put out in my lawn. I really like the KBG, but I don't think it would survive very well. Do you think TTTF would be a better option? Thanks!
I think if it wasn't cut as short it would have survived a bit better. I'm not saying you shouldn't cut it that short. Just putting it out there for others that might want to grow KBG
Most people don't have irrigation. That is the main reason why everyone says don't push nitrogen in the summer. Without a large amount of rain in the high heat of summer you will ruin a kbg lawn.
For the average joe none lawn care person those rates work. They are rates that should never burn and they are just "suggestions". If you are on top of your lawn care and you over fert then you simply over water asap to dilute the nitrogen.
Always love watching your videos. We need some rain here in TN.

Do it all yourself, Pete will walk you through everything right here! The results are a thousand times more enjoyable when it's DIY. There isn't much beyond watering and mowing (a little green-up fertilzer, maybe) right now anyway with the summer heat
Love detail comparison videos like this one. I know you have your own type of bluegrass but have you had any experience with the hybrid Bluegrass?
Ouch lol
Rain water contains nitrates especially after a Tstorm and those are readily useable by plants and turf.
Your clouds look like rain is coming. Do I hear thunder rumble?
Looks amazing! Have a question, I live in northern Alabama. I am trying to decide what grass seed would be the best to put out in my lawn. I really like the KBG, but I don't think it would survive very well. Do you think TTTF would be a better option? Thanks!
Have you seen Texas bluegrass? Supposedly Supposed to tolerate 100 degrees better than regular blue. Thoughts?
Did you hit it with any fungicide?
Zero fungicide on the bluegrass this year
Nothing wrong with fert in the summer. Just need water!
I think if it wasn't cut as short it would have survived a bit better. I'm not saying you shouldn't cut it that short. Just putting it out there for others that might want to grow KBG
True this. Taller grass shades the ground better so it doesn’t dry out as fast. Plus more water storage in the plant
that TTTF across the street is hurt too. Its not just KBG that needs water.
even petes main yard is off color...thats tttf.
just sayin..........
True. I’ve had the water off on my fescue for a couple weeks testing some things
@@GCITurf I love these tests. In particular, the KBG. outstanding!
In particular, disproving the myth of No Nitro in the summer. Love it.
I would love to see this same experiment on your tttf and Bermuda
Have you ever tried bent grass or what is your opinion of it?
What happens to Blue Heat KBG if it's been cut at closer to 4"?
Most people don't have irrigation. That is the main reason why everyone says don't push nitrogen in the summer. Without a large amount of rain in the high heat of summer you will ruin a kbg lawn.
What was you N source on the 19-0-19?
Lots of water, milo and hydretain is my method for summer green.
1.14 lbs per 1k. Lawn looks great Pete! Should call you the Connor Ward of the south! #PeteTheLawnRebel
Ya definitely the spring seeded areas just didn't have deep enough roots to survive the stress
Basically you gotta learn the formula to your grass
90 lbs * .19 = 17.1 lbs of nitrogen
17.1 lbs of nitrogen /15 sections of 1,000 square feet = 1.14 lbs of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet
For the average joe none lawn care person those rates work. They are rates that should never burn and they are just "suggestions". If you are on top of your lawn care and you over fert then you simply over water asap to dilute the nitrogen.
That would be 1.14 lbs of N amd K (90lbs/15*.19).
The only creature that I know of that can survive without water is a bug. VW bug that is. 😁
🤣😂🤣
My wife said the difference between tap water and rain is there's a little bit of God in the rain. Makes sense to me.
Rainfall provides nitrogen. God thought of everything.
I revived mine by pickin n grinnin at least 2 hours every night 🪕
🤣😂🤣
