Looks good. Nice recovery of a excess growth situation. I did it last week, its just what you do to give people (their grass actually) what it needs. mowed Tuesday, got caught in torrential rain and made a mess. Went back Thursday to blow off and pick up the mess.
I know of one other outfit in my area that cares THAT much about the grass health.

Best way I’ve found when I come across an overgrown lawn is to do the initial cut then take the big backpack and blow a bunch of small piles and rake up what I can. Then follow up with a second cut.

For this situation my tip is to mow slower, especially if it’s moist, to give the deck more time to feather out the clippings evenly... and maybe go at it with a different direction on 2nd pass.

In northern Ohio we use creeping re fesscue, perrenial rye and blue grass. I pretty much did what you do with a bit of exception. I cut all year at 3 1/2" and when I went on vacation I might "forget" to mow be fore I went. Coming home after two weeks, I cut the grass as high as I could. - about 5 1/2" on day one, if it doesn't "clump" I will recut it in two days at 5" and recut every two days until I get down to 3 1/2". Each cut is at right angle to the previos cut. So I end up "mulching" the grass but the clippings are dispersed LIGHTLY.
I use a lawn service for fertilize and weed control. The material is organic and the folks that do the service are a bit OCD. I used to get a call out of the blue "How's your lawn doing? Go barefoot and look around. And call back." Now, being properly trained, I do so. I have some neighbors who have bird feeders and their seed contains thistle. NUT! But there is a very simple way to deal with these weeds: Use a small - 1 to 1 1/2 quart - sprayer and wet thm down. Then sprinkle some ordinary table salt on them. In two dayss, or less, they are black and DEAD. My service also tests the soil every year.
When the lawn is just down right aweful - which seems to be the case every time I move - I plug aerate and slit seed for two years in a row. The cheapest thing you will ever put on your lawn is good grass seed. With this house, the lawn was aweful so I had the service take some samples and send them out to the lab - way alkaline. We put some sulfur down and the problem was solved.
To put in the perrenial beds in the back of the house, I had a real challenge - no topsoil and my house is built on the ridge of a large quarry so there were lots of rocks. Schneebor makes a great rake with teeth that are far apart - great for picking rocks. Then a lot of peat moss, Millorganite, Sweet Peet and Holly Tone - and I mean a lot. Till it in and then mulch - twice a year for the first two years and then once a year thereafter.

Pete, Enjoy your videos. I am fairly new to mowing and I had client that would let their grass which use to be good turf grow to a height that I thought I was in a paddock. It took most of the day on a Toro 48" but what we did was start at the highest setting (5") and cut in opposite directions. Now we are Mulching so a little different to side discharge, but we would then lower the setting by 1/2" and do the same procedure, same lines. Until we go to within 1/2" of desired height for the grass species, then lower the setting by 1/4 ". For some of the grasses that I am mowing have a recommended cut height of 2" and I usually cut those at 2 and 3/4", but there is very little moisture on either the ground or grass when I do this, so it maybe of assistance, it may not. Usually get the clumping if there is moisture somewhere.

Congrats on the wedding anniversary. Me and my wife just celebrated our 20th on May 23rd. Btw, I ordered the 5 gallon RGS from you today. Looking forward to spraying mine and my parent's lawn. Also, please keep us updated on your N-ext testing.
I've experienced the same thing, tall damp grass, I started out mulching, but it was too tall and damp, so I bagged the grass so that I wouldn't have to deal with those wet clumps of grass. I'm aware about returning the clippings to the grass, but I erred on the safe side. I worked too hard renovating my lawn to jack it up now.

Totally enjoy your videos, and have learned much...even though I have Bermuda, and it is looking fantastic. You have a beautiful place as well. I am just a regular guy...retired. I am not in the roofing business either. I can't help but notice you have roof mold on probably the north side of your house. Your neighbors have it too. Very common down here in GA. It usually shows up on the north side of homes. I had it as well.
Had a roof cleaner take care of it. It was inexpensive, and done in a couple of hours. My roof looks brand new. The guy just used a spray, with no pressure washing or scrubbing. He told me it would be back in a few years unless he puts a copper strip on my roof. I declined. Told him I have enough holes in my roof...haha. It has been about 4 years, and there is just a hint of it coming back. Going to give him a call to remove it. It was a great investment IMO. When you get a chance look up roof mold. You will see why you should remove it from your roof.
Again, totally enjoy your insights and videos!

I don't bag the clippings either, nor do I have a mulching blade. I run into the same thing in the spring where you can't move often enough it seems and the grass gets really high. My solution is similar. I cut twice but I have a pull behind sweeper to pick up the excess clippings. I was hand raking but the sweeper works pretty well for me.

Its great to see someone mowing, double cutting, and taking the time to fluff up matted and clumped up grass the right way. I've been mowing this way since forever so it is second nature. Just how I know it should be done. I see "pros" mowing in my neck of the woods leaving that mess behind for a full week or more. It makes me cringe. They get the same matted mess trying to bag an entire property, too. So why even bother with the bag part? I do not know.

It's hard having a tall thick lawn and leaving it. I'd have to have someone cut it for me because I have to mow every 4 days with this Bermuda lawn in Texas. It's going to be 105 here next week and under my pecan trees I have a patch of St. Augustine that is in an epic battle with Bermuda. And the only way St.Augustine hangs around is it in partial shade.

Great videos. I’ve never had a lawn that looks as good as yours, but I’ve had to deal with super tall, thick grass where it looks like the discharge chute is making hay bales. To keep the mower from bogging down, I would make a pass in the center of the yard, then only throw my clippings to where I had already cut, and sometimes only use the left 1/2 of the deck to cut so the other half could cut the clippings finer before they came out of the discharge chute.

I'm glad that you showed what is a tall fescue seed looks like because I saw something like that in my yard and thought it was anna poa weeds so I bagged my grass when I cut it so as not to spread that weed in my yard. Maybe in another video you could compare the two (the seed and the weed) to make sure everyone who might incorrectly identify a fescue seed for a weed like I did knows the difference.

I use radio ear muffs, 3M I think. They were a little pricey but worth it. I have Tinitus from years of working with Military aircraft when young and not so conscientious. I am fanatical about Protective equipment now. Always wear hearing, eye and hand protection (gloves) now (and for last couple decades).
Unfortunately, sun protection a must now also, 50SPF on face and arms, longs pant and real shoes, no flip-flops, very large brim cowboy style hat. Yes, I look ridiculous but when I shut the equipment down, I can hear, see, and not have to head to dermatologist for more cutting/freezing.

Mow in race track pattern just this once no nice stripes. Blow all clippings inward then you can chop them up real good and rake up whats left if its too heavy. Or just bag it. Sure your taking some nutrients but better than the dead spots from the lawn being buried in clippings.

Morning. I am enjoying your videos. Question. Do you always cut at a height of 4.5 inches? That seems pretty high to me. Also, if you do not collect the cuttings does the high cut height prevent thatching & moss growing? Maybe this is a specific issue for wet Scotland? Good wishes Graham

You've made me move my deck all the way up to about 4 1/2 inch cut. My yard looks pretty nice this yr. I've always mowed low. Never again.
I like to leave my clippings on my grass as well.
I do think the, this might have been a time to mow inwards as much as possible to try to get some wind rows then hand rake the yard after first cut.
I know it sucks. I use to hand rake my yard all the time, every mow. ( not doing that again).but I do think that's one of those times where not having a bigger (like me) hand raking might save you DAYS of extra traffic on that pretty yard. Plus it'll fluff up your yard to allow air flow through the stems.
    What's your thoughts on that?

Hi brother. This video was helpful. Would you mind in your next video sharing more specifically how to differentiate between a weed (such as poa annua) and the grass seeding as it gets tall? If you had said that was the TTF grass I would have thought that was poa annua. I have had some of that in my yard this spring in New Hampshire because I haven't been using pre emergents because I have been doing so much overseeding.

  • @fracmath3934

Pete would it not be advantageous to cut the high grass with an intersecting diagonal pattern. With this method you are cutting and recutting all in the same step. I do this with my lawn when it gets too high and using this method I do not get the clumps of grass left behind. Also it is easier on the mower because it is cutting high grass for short intervals.

hey....Mr. Pete. i think what i would do in your situation i would have let the clumps dry up and re mow it instead of blowing it. depends on the heat and how quick the clumps dry out. if you really want some "throw" on the discharge run an x blade set up with high lift. it will send clippings 2x as far, great video and love your property that fescue it awesome.

Im not sure where you are but in the eastern united states i cut like 3 inches and it grows to about 8-9 inches every week, on fertilized yards like 11-13 inches

What I absolutely hate is that when I mowed semi thick or semi long grass the tires of my riding mower mat down the grass and it doesn't look good! And I don't remember having trouble with grass getting matted down last year it seems to be more of a problem this year

I'm wondering if it may have been less work to just bag it this one time and put the clippings in the compost pile. I'm sure you would have had to empty the bag almost every other pass, but you would have avoided having to deal with all the clumps. Really nice yard. Your hard work is paying dividends.

Barry Wuthrich I get this. BUT. it would take me 3x as long to mow if I bagged it. Good idea though .

Pete, I'm so glad you talked about that Fescue seed head at 3:15I have some of this in my yard and I didn't know what it was... some people told me it was Poa Triv and some said Quackgrass... and one guy did tell me it was a Fescue seed head like your just said. .But I still have some questions about this, and I figure you know as much about Fescue as anybody, so I wanted to ask you....1.) What makes that one long stem with the seed head grow so tall (like 8" in 5-6 days)?2.) In my yard, these are only in some places here and there and not growing out of every Fescue plant...I have some places where these are every 3-4" and then some places where there is none at all? What makes them grow out of some Fescue plants but not others?3.) After mowing, when these are chopped off, can they germinate like regular grass seed?4.) One thing that made one person tell me this was POA Triv was that the Seed Head on mine has "purple" edges like I've heard that POA Triv does...or maybe I'm confused???.
I wish you had a video on this, lol.

    • @matthewhartup941
      @matthewhartup941 6 ปีที่แล้ว

I'm not sure what you had that had seed heads with purple edges, but that's not tall fescue, sounds more like a bermuda grass seed head to me. TTF seed heads are light green, they're also sterile so they won't germinate. They will add some good organic material back into the turf when you mow.

PS The next time that you go one holidays, fence up your yard and place a mob of sheep. Not only the sheep will mow the grass, but also fertilize it. God bless freedom!

I think if you tried to bag that you would be frustrated with a clogged bagger hose. I wonder how a lawn sweeper might work at fluffing up your lawn?

4-1/2” is too long, IMO. Harder to walk in. Ever try 3-1/2”? I think it would be much better. Maybe that extra half inch would help on the heat stress.
Snapper makes the best mulching mower, hands down. You don’t even see the needles, because it chops them up so fine. Now, if you’re cutting three inches off, you might have some issues. You could always use a mulching blade on a side discharge mower, as well. It just wouldn’t mulch as well.
Here’s what I did when I had a situation where the grass was too high and thick, and I was using a basic, side- discharge push mower:
I would start by taking two or three swipes in the middle of the yard. Then I would blow the grass from the sides of that clear strip into that 4 to 6 foot area. Resulting in all the excess grass clippings being in just a small area. Then go over them over with a bag on the lawnmower and bag the excess clippings. Your yard will look perfect. The job I did when I was a teenager, I didn’t have a bag attachment, so I just raked up the excess clippings.
For your situation here, I would just wait two or three days and then mow it again. You’ll chop up all the dead grass clippings. Your grass must be on steroids, to grow four-plus inches in a week.

Im get those same clumps of grass after I mow... First time I have need to bag all the time otherwise my mower can't mulch. Even after 2 days of sunny days and dry, the soil just keeps "sweating" making the grass wet and clumping the mower... what a pain!!!

enp83 afternoon like 3-4pm because of what you just said. To avoid the humidity/wetness from morning time.
Freshly sharp blades and clean deck as well

Pete, with heat stress in a TTTF yard, is it ok to water during the hottest part of the day for 15 or 20 min just to "cool" the turf down? I know you dont want TTTF to be wet which leads to brown patch, but i think if i watered it at 1 or 2pm it will be completly dry by 5. Is this a good idea?

I can tell by the close up shot with your ruler ,that your mower blade is not sharp enough. Its ripping the grass blades rather than cutting them.

  • @geneduclos4003
    @geneduclos4003 6 ปีที่แล้ว

I feel your pain brother. I'm cutting my grass at a minimum of twice a week. Even at that frequency, I sometimes have to bag, if the weather was favorable for growth just to avoid the clumping. At least my compost pile appreciates the extra clippings.
