I did the same this year. I overseeded my mostly KGB front lawn with Barenbrug Perennial Rye this August. The rye took off immediately which was great for someone used to KGB. After they rye started to fill I dropped a little more KGB which I feel the rye is helping stick in place.
@@PrincessCutLawnCare too early to tell, it was a good deal for 50lbs through Home Depot online. I also got their TTTF for my backyard and that took off quick. Happy with it, but after I found the GCI TTTF Spreader Elite was available, I have overseeded the back yard again with Pete's.
Thanks bro! always appreciate you you stop by! I actually have a lot of fun mixing my tracks, so much boring music in the lawn community, gotta switch it up on em haha
Hey George, I just over-seeded with GCI Academy tall fescue/KBG here in Upstate NY. Into day 20 now and lawn coming in nicely. I’ve had too many fungal issues with previous grass types : creeping fescue/annual rye/kb I hope I have success with this grass and a nice thick green lawn. Great video!
@@PrincessCutLawnCare Question, should I apply a post emergent and if so, when is a safe window since I overseeded 23 days ago and suggestions for what I should use? Or should I wait til spring?
@@thurstonr9929 personally I would try to wait but if not then I would lightly spot spray with some premixed ortho or spectricide. Those have low concentrations of herbicides and won’t cause damage after a couple mows of the new grass
@@PrincessCutLawnCare I will take your advice and wait. Think I will put it off til the spring. Just did my second mow today and lawn filling in nicely with the tall fescue/kbg. I dig your channel - always some good info. for cool season grasses. Thanks!
Hope you don’t mind another question George but I have a bag of the Anderson’s 16-4-8 fertilizer. Can I use that as a winterizer or do you have a suggestion ?
I have a video idea for you, and the timing is just about right - fall application of a pre-emergent (Dimension/Dithiopyr and/or Barricade/Prodiamine) to prevent weeds that germinate in the fall, such as Poa Annua. I am about 100 miles north of you, and I just put down some Lesco fertilizer with Dimension. I've been using it in the spring to successfully prevent crab grass, but for the first time I applied it in the fall a week ago to see if I can't get rid of some troublesome fall-germinating weeds. There's lots of videos on this subject for warm season and transition area turf, but not much on cool season grasses. Keep up the good work.
Lawn looks good. Love your videos! I am doing a PRG overseed this year in front yard and back. Gonna thatch and aerate first. Then throw down the Seed next two weeks 70’s for highs and 50’s for lows.
SPF30 bluegrass seeds came in today. Doing dirt prep and seed going down next week. Only doing the small area next to the driveway to see how it does. Oh, and I'm doing this in Florida.
Congrats on the reseed. I have used Greene Punch. Good product I would assume you will get great results. I also would agree with you on the peat moss, not a fan. Lastly, I try to stay away from using fungicides since they also kill the good funguses our lawns. Good luck on the PRG, looks good.
Ryan Knorrs VigORR is a great additive to a freshly seeded lawn. The results are twice as good as compared to last year for me, also used his Elite Perennial Rye mix w/ opti root. I love both Rye and Blue.
Gonna have to check it out, thanks for the recommendation. I seeded the ss9000 mix which is what his lawn is or was, not sure if it still is. And I gotta say I’m really liking it!
@@PrincessCutLawnCare … My original lawn is the SS9000, it’s Slugger 3GL, Stellar 3GL and Gran Slam GlD. Knorrs Elite Mix is Pangea PLR, Paradox GLR and Rainwater.
@@PrincessCutLawnCare … The Elite mix germination was a little quicker and seems a little darker. Other than that they seem very similar so far. I’ve had great success with the SS9000 for the first full season. Greened up nicely outta winter, handled the heat as well with minimal watering and had no fungus issues will light preventative fungicide apps. Striping is insane !!!
PRG and KBG is the best combo for cold weather. My lawn looks great and I spent 3 years getting it there with overseeing KBG and PRG. But real talk. Can we talk about how the video was actually shot on a sunny day making the lawn pop?! Finally!
@@PrincessCutLawnCare Barenbrug has a regenerative Perennial Rye that supposedly spread through stolons. I am thinking of getting that with the Blue HGT blend to see how that works.
Love the video, George! I was a little hesitant to buy the seed mulch but I will give it a go sometime this week with some RPR while we still have decent weather in central Iowa
Thanks dude the seed mulch is awesome! just make sure to cover the ground 50 % rather then the 25% listed on the bag. I tested two area and the 50% percent ground cover yielded better results
I did the TTTF/KBG Grass is THICK... Not as thick as all PRG, but I am happy.... I wish I would have had the Moss Spreader... Not using your Hoselink? I am loving mine thanks for the Rec.
I'm surprised the midnight didn't self repair the bare areas, it seems pretty aggressive in my experience. Maybe shade from the tree is having an impact?
Great vid as usual George , Ron and you are my go to lawn experts for tips and info. I also like a KBG / PRG hybrid lawn as a cool season lawn person myself , I love KBG the appearance & color and the spreading aspect is a big plus. But KBG can be a bit delicate - often requires a lot of water , does not like the heat and disease can creep in if you lower your guard. Ntm the KBG germination rate is slow and it is typically late to come out of dormancy. I am in North NJ with typically brutal summers and i went from an all KBG lawn to a KBG / PRG hybrid lawn and seen many benefits since doing so. I like the blend , to me the varieties compliment each other in numerous ways. Through the summer the PRG's color and appearance tend to hold up better and the super quick germination is always a plus. At its peak KBG looks amazing but that peak is very hard to come by and maintain in my / your area , so i do like the benefits of mixing in the PRG. The blend / hybrid option at least for me works best , i would say i am at a 65 / 70 % KBG to a 30 / 35 % PRG as of now ; though as you said George the KBG will take over more and more as time goes on.
I’m in central NJ and have turf type tall fescue. I hate all the bare spots and always having the reseed. I was thinking of overseeding with KBG but wasn’t sure if it was a good idea or not.
@@FixItWithMe theres a lot to take into account. TTTF tends to be a bit tougher / more resilient , more shade tolerant and often maintains a darker green (which is always a bonus, even though there are dark KBG cultivars as well). I like KBG because of the spreading aspect as to not always having to overseed to fill in bare spots. But it can be a bit delicate and a bit slower to come out of winter and summer dormancy. My Perennial Rye in the front lawn been nice and green and lush already so early in the season but my KBG areas still not quite there yet. Still some brownish spots in the more dominantly KBG areas. But soil temps still been pretty cold up here in Northern NJ. Also , have to keep in mind KBG spreads and TTTF doesn't so over time the KBG % in your lawn is going to likely keep increasing. So sort of no going back if you don't like it , unless you want to take drastic measures down the line. Me personally i like having a mix , the Perennial Rye is super quick to germinate and it has a slightly more shimmery / reflective look and blends nicely with the KBG. Nothing really stands out or clashes color or appearance wise. My backyard was mostly Perennial Rye and some TTTF , before i mixed KBG in and it just got tedious having to overseed so often. Since i included KBG back there , really don't have to overseed hardly at all back there anymore. I like to have some spreading grass in the mix to reduce the constant over-seeding. I am actually experimenting with some spreading Perennial Rye this season at some point. But in your case you have to consider a number of factors if you want to do it or not.
@@AlexBB77 I just bought this house 2 years ago and had a major septic field repair. Therefore, I got TONS of weeds. I have been using Prodiamine and post emergent control. And I have overseeded the area, which is getting a lot better. I haves 2.5 acres of lawn to take care of, and it seems like when I get one area in control, another area just gets tons of weeds and bare spots. My soil also tends to stay soggy during the heavy rains we have been getting, so I thought KBG will help soak up some of that extra water in my yard. That’s why I wanted to somehow mix in KBG. I heard there’s rhyzomtic fescue and perrenial rye, but I heard it barely spreads. Nothing compared to the KBG. Does ur perrenial rye also turn brown in the summer with the KBG? Do u start seeding KBG in august? And thanks for responding to me!! :)
@@FixItWithMe if its a hot and dry enough summer any cool season grass will turn brown. KBG tends to go dormant quicker and stay dormant longer than others but it bounces back. My Rye tends to be the first to green up out of the winter , stay green the longest into summer and stays green the longest into the winter as well. But that just my experience with it. And i agree out of the cool season spreading varieties nothing comes close to KBG's spreading ability. Though i am going to try a Barenbrug spreading Perennial Rye in a few spots this season just to see. In your case i would mix the KBG in , it will fill in , self repair , thicken up the turf so less weeds. And yes i tend to do any seeding in late August for the most part , KBG maybe a week or two earlier than i would with Rye because of the longer germination time with KBG. I don't even mess with Spring seeding anymore , i feel like the birds are more aggressive being after the seed in the Spring , the soil temps not warm enough until later Spring and then new grass has to deal with summer heat so young. Just not ideal with cool season varieties imo. 2.5 acres is a lot , i don't envy over-seeding or maintaining that. I have about 8000 sq ft combined front and back and thats enough for me. Just can't imagine that large an area and how expensive fertilizer , seeding and other chemicals would cost. Especially KBG with the long germination that could be challenging. Maybe do just thinner spots and where weeds tend to fill in first with the KBG and let it spread from there. Over time will get more and more KBG % as it spreads anyway.
George excellent vid with so much great info. I feel like i followed a very similar path to you in terms of lawn renos. I did a big reno about 5 or 6 years ago and went all PRG and it was looking great but I wanted to change it up and liked the look and rhizome feature of the KBG so I went all KBG in the front yard. When it is thriving KBG looks great do not get me wrong but in my experience KBG is rather susceptible to heat / drought stress and disease at least in NJ's hot and humid summers. And in general i noticed with certain KBG varieties , Midnight in particular for me (despite other peoples' experiences with it) looked great but seems extra fragile for me ; especially suffering in the NJ summers. About 2 or 3 years ago I went with a hybrid KBG / PRG mix and tend to overseed with more and more pure PRG since which got it to about 60 % KBG and 40% PRG. To me it is a good mix , it blends well color and look wise and the PRG tends to hold up a bit better through the summers (especially the color & look) and is generally less maintenance , the fast germination from PRG is amazing as well. Ntm though some hate on PRG the quality varieties actually look really good , I used a Barenbrug version the last few seasons and it really has a reflective shimmering quality to it. To each their own but I do like a KBG / PRG hybrid lawn , think it works on many levels.
Appreciate you sharing your experience! So you notice the rye holds up better in summer because like you, we have very hot and humid summers and I’m curious to see how it performs
@@PrincessCutLawnCarerye holds up better through the summer in my experience , less prone to heat and drought stress and in general more disease / fungus resistant. Of course all cool season grasses struggle a bit in the summer but for me rye does better than KBG during that time. One downside for rye is the lack of rhizomes , so no spreading , and even though it blends well , the color i can never get quite as dark as the KBG (though not obviously noticeable). That is why i think the mix of the two in a hybrid lawn works really well. Plus with a fair bit of rye in the mix , you will get an earlier green up out of winter and from any summer dormancy issues.
George, Good timing. I was looking at my lawn not liking something and I realize its the KBG I decided to try out last year. I'm going to have to stick to Rye/Fescue mix here in CT
Ok George. I finally decided to do something about my weed infested lawn. I applied Speedzone and Tenacity about a week ago and its starting to eradicate a lot of the weeds but im sure it wont take them all out. Should I try to overseed this fall or put down Prodiamine in the fall and spring and overseed next year. Your advice is greatly appreciated!
I was too late on my overseed this year and am going to try dormant seeding in December. Not sure how long Speedzone stays in the soil but might be something to research or consider. I have read dormant seeding is generally more successful than spring seeding due to trying to time the soil temps.
I just had a 5 foot diameter stump removed from my front yard and I've got zilch experience in grass seed. I bought Scott's KBG at Menards and seeded the bare spot this past mid August. It's been a month now and the grass is coming out (it's about 1/2 to an inch now), it's a light green color. My existing grass is dark green. I'm wondering if KBG will get dark as it grows. Otherwise it's going to look like a light green patch. I live in the Rockford, IL area and I don't know what kind of grass I originally have, but it's a lot darker than KBG. If KGB doesn't get a little more darker as it grows, I might have to try a different kind of seed. Thank you for your interesting videos and information.

I live in the Pacific Northwest in Federal Way. I planted KGB it very slow to grow. I am thinking about adding Perennial Ryegrass seed . It's early October here can I added it. I still like to have KGB but I notice it slow and I see bears spots in the lawn,
@@PrincessCutLawnCare I was albe to plant the send. I'll let you know in 5 or six days. I hope by next year I have a KGB lawn. I do see that both are problematic so I have to take your advice on care.
I seeded my new lawn with kbg (midnight, bluebank, & mazama) and cannot believe how quickly it germinated and filled in. I saw initial germination on day 4, and today on day 18 it has filled in very well. There were a few big bare spots (that either I missed or were washed out), but every day I'm seeing more & more grass creeping into those areas. I may still throw down some extra seed, in hopes they will germinate before our first freeze (typically around Halloween). It was my first time seeding a lawn so I must have done something right! :) I believe the warmer sunny weather we've had, along with my hourly light watering has really helped it. Do you think I should apply my second starter fertilizer app at the end of week 3 or 4 (I used the Scott's starter + meso 21-22-4 at the full recommended rate, which should be right about 1 pound of nitrogen)? I'm going to try Greene Pop (16-21-2) for my second app.
hey angel, i have the sunjoe dethatcher and really like it! In the front i dont have a striper attachment because my reel mower has a roller built in but in the back i use my honda mower with a Checkmate striper attached
Great informative video.. I had KBG while stationed in Ft. Lewis WA, it rained so much there but I still had to install sprinklers. So I know what you mean by KBG staying thirsty. Now I have Bermuda Grass here in GA, it’s a lot easier to maintain but not as fulfilling to look at.
chicagoland area and my ryegrass struggles bad even up here so i would highly advise against using it in the transition zone. if i were you i would do straight tall fescue for the best results in your area. i have an upcoming video where i seed a tall fesue that is able to be mowed low and it looks fantastic
Awesome video George! I'm also changing seeds for next year... Barenbrug has a KBG with Rye that they call resilient blue, had some issues with fungi so want to see if it really is resilient :)
Sup sam! i hear the barenbrug is great for disease resistance. The HGT variety scored in the ntep top bracket for fungus resistance, only issue is it scored very low for color:( But i rather have a lighter color then a bunch of fungus lol
Bluegrass is awesome, but it takes some serious patience. The wait is worth it. However, rye is also awesome and fun to grow and it stripes some kind of 🔥🔥🔥
@@PrincessCutLawnCare yup I used it on my front lawn a month ago, overseeded my kbg that was decimated with fungus and put the barenbrug rpr and the Ryan Knorr elite perennial rye, came in great. Used the slopemaster, went down easy with my spreader.

Hello. I overseeded TTTF my lawn about 2 weeks. After the first mow should I use a granular or liquid fertilizer? I was thinking about using Simple Lawn Solutions. Appreciate the advice. Thank you!
Either will work, I’m new to liquid fertilizer, but so far I really like how I can spoon feed the new lawn with fast release nitrogen weekly to really push the growth. I’ve been using green punch and green pop from next fertilizers and my lawn has never looked better
So I live in Orland park, so not super far from you I believe and used duocide by the Andersons in June to prevent grubs and it didn’t work at all. My entire front lawn is completely destroyed. My question is if I plan to do a total renovation in spring do I just let the grubs finish there work or should I start applying grub killer to get rid of them now. I mean as of now atleast 50-60 percent of the lawn u can lift by hand easily. The roots are gone. Secondly I’m really considering turf type tall fescue. My kbg always looks terrible all summer and i don’t want to spend a small fortune every summer trying to keep it green. And Ryan knorr had a video showing how the tall fescue stays green all summer. What do u think?
Hey neighbor! Apply grub killer now and then grub preventer next season. If your not reel mowing than i think TTTF is hands down the best seed for our area. I rec checking out united seeds fescue as they have the top rated fescue seeds in the ntep trials
@@PrincessCutLawnCare one more quick question, and I appreciate the feedback. Do u think I should kill the rest of my lawn this fall so it’s ready to go in the spring for a total renovation? I’m just thinking that maybe easier to kill it now then later in spring right before the renovation, since it takes a little time for the grass killer to leave the soil .
i would not kill it now due to erosion also i would not do a complete renovation in the spring. do you have irrigation? you will be better off making your current grass the best it can be and then waiting until next fall to do a reno. If you do it in spring youll will be dissapointed
@@PrincessCutLawnCare yeah, that’s what’s annoying. Is I’m not ready this fall for a renovation. This grub damage took me really off guard . I was probably going to add irrigation at the same time. I guess I’m just in pannick mode. I’m a big planner in general so this massive grub damage is messing me all up. Don’t know if I should remove all the Damage which would involve removing atleast 1000sf of my lawn or just leaving it and having the lawn look like crap all next year till fall

Hey took, heard great things about the cal trimmer BUT do you live down south where you can get it sharpened easily? I have a mclane and it is impossible to find somebody up here to grind it for me, even my golf coarse mechanic wont do it
Haha that would be a good idea but I don’t think you will have any issues finding one with all the Bermuda lawns down there. But back to your point, if I lived down south my first choice would probably be a cal trimmer
Hi George, can you do a review on the Allett? I’m thinking about one but would like to know if you had a troubles with it. I know there has to be some downsides to those awesome stripes!
Hey Dom i plan on doing a 1 year review which will be next season. No issues with it yet, just wish the handle bars were taller but if you under 6 feet that wont be a problem
Instead of Paper mulch, we just use paper that is from the shredder which is triple cross shredded, mixed with a light mulch. It cements the grass seed. Actually when they use the spray grass its mixed with a paper product.

Great video man, enjoyed watching it. I just started my own channel not too long ago. I can't wait till ii reach 1k subs to be honest. Love your work though
I disagree that Kentucky blue grass seeds don’t have that shiny velvety look, the reason why most peoples grass do not look great is because they cut it too low, Kentucky grass bluegrass should be kept at a certain height during the hot summer climates like at 3 1/2 to 4 inches tall, that way the blades below the grass will keep the grass moist, when you cut your grass too low it will burn out quickly during hot periods in the summer it’s a no-brainer especially with Kentucky blue grass seeds, because this is a cool season grass
You’re wrong about KBG taking over rye with your comment at 1:30or so. Don’t be fooled y’all rye grass will choke out KBG. Your ads are a little aggressive. Nice edit on your vid though.

Congrats on the reseed. I have used Greene Punch. Good product I would assume you will get great results. I also would agree with you on the peat moss, not a fan. Lastly, I try to stay away from using fungicides since they also kill the good funguses our lawns. Good luck on the PRG, looks good.
Thanks bud! I too try to stay away from the fungicides but when seeding I always use as I’ve had a bad experience lol

PRG and KBG is the best combo for cold weather. My lawn looks great and I spent 3 years getting it there with overseeing KBG and PRG.

I like using both KBG and PR. I find the PR helps keep the KGB seed in place.
Great point, my one regret was not mixing in a little last year
@@PrincessCutLawnCare Barenbrug has a regenerative Perennial Rye that supposedly spread through stolons.
Lawns looking great. I’ve been tossing the idea around of mixing in some PRG in my fescue. 😎👊🌴

Me too Christian
I might do that myself
I did the TTTF/KBG Grass is THICK... Not as thick as all PRG, but I am happy.... I wish I would have had the Moss Spreader... Not using your Hoselink? I am loving mine thanks for the Rec.
I'm surprised the midnight didn't self repair the bare areas, it seems pretty aggressive in my experience. Maybe shade from the tree is having an impact?
I don’t think so… the midnight is darker thicker and greener under the tree lol
If a guy has a large area to level can he use a chain link fence or something similar and pull it with a four wheeler
That would work for light finishing touch’s but nothing substantial
Thanks Alex!
You know the deal w the kbg haha
Damn George, editing/cinematography on point brotha! Good to see Nate make an appearance.

Ok George. I finally decided to do something about my weed infested lawn. I applied Speedzone and Tenacity about a week ago and its starting to eradicate a lot of the weeds but im sure it wont take them all out.

@@PrincessCutLawnCare one more quick question, and I appreciate the feedback. Do u think I should kill the rest of my lawn this fall so it’s ready to go in the spring for a total renovation? i would not kill it now due to erosion also i would not do a complete renovation in the spring. do you have irrigation? you will be better off making your current grass the best it can be and then waiting until next fall to do a reno. If you do it in spring youll will be dissapointed
@@PrincessCutLawnCare yeah, that’s what’s annoying. Is I’m not ready this fall for a renovation. This grub damage took me really off guard . I was probably going to add irrigation at the same time.

@@PrincessCutLawnCare Purdue study, just search for PRG and KBG mix, first line of the white paper on it is “How much perennial ryegrass/Kentucky bluegrass in a mix?”
My apologies on thinking you deleted my comment.
@@wcbscout No worries boss, my apologies on the aggressive marketing of my videos. The reality is..as a new creator if your not able to get the click of a potential viewer than youtube will very quickly bury you in the annals of history.
I will check out the article now
100% KBG lawns are slowly becoming a dying breed. Striperman will have to revitalize the King of the Cool Season Lawns lol. Your lawn does look great tho. I will have to check out the Shark Tank mower. Manual reel mowers are my specialty .
Thanks Keith! I’ll be using it on the side of my house I keep at an inch and half, stay tuned;)
It’s only good if it’s Striperman approved!
You got that right Ron 😂👍💚🦸
"I was Aggressive with my hose". And then came the babies....baby grass plants.
Put the seed in the d and out comes the b
Rye o rye
its nice!
George, I want you to focus on your weight this summer, walk walk walk 3 times a day
Since I got my house last year, all I’ve done is overseed w/PRG. If you’ve never grown grass from seed, this is the seed to start with.
